Muirhead & Bohrson Welcome We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our 13th Annual Bull Sale. It’s been a great year with record prices and a renewed optimism. With low cow numbers throughout North America it appears the cattle business could be strong for quite some time. As producers, seed-stock and commercial breeders alike, there is no better time to improve upon and get a younger bull battery. The sale bulls this year are a good cross-section of reds and blacks with a combination of calving ease, performance and strong maternal traits. Most of the bulls are sired by our walking bulls with a few of the breed’s leading AI sires represented as well. On the embryo side, our Donor cow 211S has 8 sons on offer, a great opportunity to get some full brothers. As we continue to move our calving from winter to late spring, this will be our last set of yearling bulls to sell. This year’s set of bulls consists of 46 two-year-olds and 21 yearlings. The 2’s are grown out and fed to gain 2lbs the first winter, then grassed until September. They are then trailed home where they are put on a TMR ration consisting of silage, tub-ground hay and a bull developer pellet with a chelated mineral. The yearlings are weaned in September and put on a similar ration. All bulls go through a strict culling process right from birth until the time of cataloguing. The purebred cows are run under the same conditions as are our commercial cows. In fact, the only time they are not together is through the breeding season. As such, we run a 50 day breeding season and the culling of cows is as stringent as the culling of the bulls. If a cow comes up open – she goes to town! If we have to help her calf nurse because of udder issues – she goes to town! If she has poor feet– she goes to town! No matter what she has done or who she has raised, if she fails to meet the criteria – she goes to town. The catalogue has details of our guarantee and sight-unseen-program. The Muirhead Cattle Co Bull Sale is a great opportunity for livestock producers to acquire herd sires from a family operation that stands behind their product. As the Muirhead program has shifted to marketing more extra age bulls, it has been approached to what they feel is best for their clientele. Many purebred operations have attempted to offer extra age groups but have found that it isn’t as easy as it originally looks. There is a slight art on how to handle and maintain those bulls for 20+ months and the Muirhead’s have mastered how to offer extra-age bulls that perform well but are still sound, athletic and will cover a larger group of females in their initial breeding season while maintaining BCS. As we are all aware of the livestock industry turning the corner and the futures looking strong, it comes with responsibility from purebred breeders to continue to offer their best genetics available and not expose the market with just another bull. We are proud that the purebred breeders we work with year round take that seriously and only offer their top cut and the Muirhead’s are a prime example of that. This year’s offering is smaller in numbers than prior years but the quality is stronger and are the most consistent to date. Customer Profile - Lost River Farming Co Lost River Farming Co is located in the rolling hills of Allan, SK where they run a 1000 head cow/calf operation. The cows originated from a Hereford base but now are comprised predominately of Simmental and Angus female. The ranch utilizes both Simmental and Angus bulls to produce single cross calves. Annually they breed 300 heifer calves to start calving the last week of January for a strict 45 day breeding period with the mature cow herd due to start calving the 20th of February with a 45 day breeding period as well. Steer calves are marketed every fall around the 1st of October straight off the cow, averaging 700-750 lbs. Danny Wollman and Frank Wollman Jr. manage the cow/calf side of the operation while Walter Wollman oversees the feedlot side of the operation. Lost River Farming Co has been purchasing bulls from the Muirhead family for the last 9 years and appreciates their customer service and has been impressed with the longevity of the bulls they have purchased. Three sixty is a bull that we were pretty high on as we watched him develop as a calf. We were excited to purchase part of him back to use as a large part of our black program. Peso, as we call him, was purchased from Rancier Farms, Garth and Ang Rancier of Killam, Alberta. We bought Peso as a calving ease heifer bull to replace Kosmo and he did not let us down. Not only are his off-spring born easy, they have adequate performance with the females proving to be fertile, moderate in size with good udders.

We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy the summer walking rights for Identity in the late spring of 2011. He may be the best footed bull I have ever seen, it is big with excellent structure to it. He is very athletic and is structurally correct in his make up. He is extremely big hipped and soft sided, broad topped and very easy fleshing. Not to mention he is backed buy one of Westway’s top cow families. We are very happy with the Identity cattle and feel he is a great asset to our red program for years to come.
