there were hundreds of orphans. The council was famously corrupt, with councillors lining their own pockets instead of providing basic facilities for their constituents. We could all learn some lessons by picking up Robert Tressell s excellent tome and we could go even further by visiting the Mugsborough exhibition showing till 27th March at Hastings Museum on Bohemia Road.

A Ragged Trousered Bohemian As we go to print today 3rd of February, we are remembering the great Robert Tressell, who died on this day 100 years ago. Robert s famous tragic-comic and socialist spirited book The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists was written in Bohemia, on London Road, just around the corner in fact from the offices of the Bohemia Village Voice a plaque commemorates outside number 241. If you live in St. Leonards and Hastings ************************************** and haven t yet read this book, you really must do so this year, on the 100 year anniversary of his death. Sadly Robert was only 40 when he died of tuberculosis during a visit to Liverpool - he was planning to emigrate to Canada. No publisher would accept the book in his lifetime and it was only his wife Kathleen s tenacity and faith that helped the book eventually find a publisher in Grant Richards. Richards paid only £25 for the manuscript and copyright and the first edition KNICKERS cost six shillings which was far beyond the means of the average working person of that Please drop your time. Mugsborough Images of Edwardian Hastings 15th January - 27th March The Ragged- Trousered Philanthropists of Robert Tressell s novel, set in Edwardian Hastings, or Mugsborough, as he called it, were his fellow painters and labourers, employed on the lowest of wages, but too cowed even to protest at their plight. In his eyes they became benefactors or philanthropists to their middle-class bosses, conniving in the deep social divide that separated workers from the better off. At a time of severe recession, when many in Hastings were close to starvation, there was a groundswell of left-wing opinion in the country, seen in local social democratic and labour movements. This exhibition provides a snapshot of the Edwardian Hastings that Tressell lived in and includes extensive archive material, photographs, costume and other ephemera from the permanent collection. Also featured in the exhibition will be a series of caricatures by political illustrator Harry Furniss highlighting a contrasting view of the somewhat frivolous and lavish aristocracy of this time. The Flight Another block is going now, come see, quick . James held the balcony doors against the whining storm. I stepped outside. Undulating dark blue clouds rumbled like a foundry overhead and a stinging shower of luminous hail bounced noiselessly around my feet like frozen popcorn. At sea, a circle of froth contracted, my eyes still trying to adjust to the outside gloom, a sudden bolt of lightning hit the balcony next door. The crystal edges of previously smashed windows sparkled, animating the empty hollows of a deserted residence. Tattered, pink, wet curtains, laced with a pattern of black mould, sucked into the vacuum and the fantastic light seared a neon print upon my eyelids. A metallic silence and then a stillness swamped us, we withdrew indoors, blinded by the light, my ears started ringing. James put his Eye on the table. The storm projected and replayed in the charged air. I saw in miniature, the collapse of the ancient mansion-block in night-vision, then the sea surging and swirling around the black statue of Queen Victoria. The film stopped and we looked up, shifted focus. I opened my mouth to speak but instead drew a breath. I wonder what will be left in the morning? James said in the space I left. I exhaled. Do you think we are the only ones left on Warrior Square? I felt my Eye vibrate and pulled it out of my pocket. Hello There was no picture, and then the familiar government flight call click . The automated message... Do you need to fly on... the twelfth of January two thousand and twenty two? Say yes after the bip. Bip! Yes Please verify identity I pressed my finger onto the screen and motioned for James s hand so he could do the same. He pressed the screen. Our fingerprints glowed green side by side. Booking complete . The screen went black. I looked over to the government bags we had collected in the hall, they contained our slender provisions, and some we had scavenged from the empty flats in our building. The room was illuminated for a moment by a silent flash of light and outside the shaking, streaming windows, something dark and heavy fell through the air. Its shadow streaked down the walls. James went out on the balcony to see what it was, the night flooded in and the front door rattled against the lock. He leaned nervously over the balcony, but it was too dark to see what was lying on the ground. He looked up, in time to catch a second great black mass already descending. It slammed him against the balcony and continued rushing downwards, slowed only slightly by cracking his neck. I swallowed and looked at my Eye. Without stepping onto the balcony, no doubt further weakened by this last assault, I dragged him inside by his feet, tearing his jacket collar which was caught and bloodied on a wrought-iron curlicue. He had already stopped breathing, I didn t even try. His neck was warm, I laid my hand upon it for a moment, but there was no pulse. I closed the doors to the balcony and took his Eye out of his wet hand, his grip was tight, the screen had cracked. I transferred his memory and credit to my Eye and I used his fingerprint to verify. There was a tremor in his arm. His fingerprint glowed and disappeared. 7

My Eye buzzed and the screen displayed the flight number. I packed all the provisions I could carry in one bag and I went into the bedrooms to see if I could find any waterproof clothes. I figured there might be less people out in the streets during the storm, it might be a better time to walk, as long as I didn t get ill. There were some vitamin ampoules in the kitchen, and I took a knife. The storm seemed to be calming but one of the doors on the balcony swung open and I suddenly heard someone shouting on the street outside. It took me a minute or so to recognise my own name. I had the knife in my hand, I felt the skin of my palm prickle and sweat against the handle. I didn t recognise the voice, but the air was thick and the sounds passing through it were changed. There was banging on the front door to the building, then there was a smashing of glass and then feet, tired and slow on the stairs. Still the voice called Zia? Quietly now. I hid in the darkness of the kitchen, clasping the knife, not breathing. Knocking on the door to the flat Zia? It was a man s voice, he caught his breath, leaned against the door Zia, it s me, Vincent, are you there? My Eye buzzed, it was Vincent, leaning on the door. I walked over to let him in, suddenly conscious of the knife I was holding and the body in the middle of the floor. I opened the door and Vincent tumbled in, he clocked James on the floor, in the darkness he might of been asleep. James? He spoke to the vague shape of a man. He s dead. He went out on the balcony and something fell on him. There are two dead people on the street outside. He looked at his Eye, still calling me and stopped the call. I didn t think there was anyone left in this building. I said, I wondered if James and I might have taken their last provisions. I knew we had. Have you booked the flight yet? Yes, tomorrow, you? I wanted to see you first. I booked James for the flight, but now... well, there s a space. If you want it . I handed him the rest of the provisions. He had none of his own. I m ready to go. We were already moving out of the door. I flicked my Eye on and brought up the flight details. I drew a line through James s name and had Vincent put his fingerprint down in his place, while we were still moving. Down the soaking, carpeted steps, our feet squeezed the moisture underfoot and left footprints. The walls dripped and the great cracks in the plaster seemed to creak and stretch with our every movement. It was a relief to be standing on the stone steps outside, even though there was blood and a porridge of brains on them and two dead people to step over. I kept my eyes above the level of death. I didn t want to recognise them. The moon shone brightly, the clouds had cleared from the sky and the sea had stopped its raging. As we walked along Warrior Square, I almost felt the old building would collapse, with its last living residents now departing. I turned to watch it crumble but it remained, silver and tragic. We turned the corner onto Western Road to see a gang of kids and dogs disappear into a building, just missing us, we waited for them to be well inside before we moved again. We kept our Eye lights off, there were a few people looking out of the windows, but it was dark and we kept in the shadows. Vincent reached out to hold my hand. I thought you had gone already I whispered. Dogs barking made me jump. An unseen door opened and two chunky, slobbering dogs came tearing around the corner. Their thick claws clattered on the pavement, their heavy metal collars in a frenzy, their breathing wet and desperate, they rolled into one another and began chewing on each other s necks, One BOHEMIA VILLAGE VOICE

dragged the other along by the throat whilst it did a crap in the gutter. I didn t even blink. A scream from an open door and they roared back in time. We waited to hear the door click shut and continued walking. The plan was always to walk down the railway line. The railway station had been deserted since last year. Files and equipment lay everywhere. Some black market Voo dealers would deal from there occasionally, it was safer for them because there was bullet proof glass and a steel door, I think they also liked handing over their packets like travel tickets for old times sake, but maybe that s just me romanticising. They were hardly ever seen anymore though. We walked through the empty lobby and out onto the platform, we jumped down onto the tracks and started walking. Nobody can really tell you what it s like, that s the scary thing. This is scary. Yeh, I guess. Someone said to me that first of all it feels like your body turns into a plastic bag full of maggots, then after that, you can feel yourself inside the maggots and the maggots feel like a million plastic bags full of even smaller maggots, and on and on till there s nothing. That s a horrible idea, and anyway how do they know that? It doesn t work properly on some people. Well then how do they know what it feels like when it works? How do you know when it s really the end? Oh Zia, I wish you hadn t said that thing about the maggots. Sorry. If you really think about it though, it s sort of amazing. I guess death is just not being you anymore. You know I think we should wait until the very last minute. Isn t this the last minute? Everyone else has gone. What do you think is going to happen Vinnie? God, I don t know. God? No, I just mean, God! I don t know. Let s just keep walking. Flight - 21009, 21010. A robot voice pronounced our numbers. Sickness, excitement, dread wove a net and pulled my body back down to the chair. I couldn t look at Vinnie. I eventually stood up, faint-legged and offered him my hand, but he didn t take it, his eyes were frozen. He couldn t do it. The light above the door to the corridor clicked green and I walked over and opened it and began walking down the corridor to the little flight room right at the end. The door was ajar. A nurse sat me down on a bed, she smiled and without saying anything, or preparing me in any way she shot a needle into my neck. There was no pain, but a sudden rush of elation, I saw the tiny glass vial of Voo on the trolley, the nurse stood back with her syringe. I tried to call out to Vinnie that it was okay but no words came, no sound came, my mouth didn t even open. The dull room around me exploded into a multidimensional vision of loveliness and strange shapes coalesced in the brilliant colours. Beings of light defined themselves, the nurse became part of the room and fused in and out of my expanding reality. My skin became a transparent film filled with light and there I was. The tiniest bead of dew on a spider s web, trembling with all the majesty of the Universe. Are you a budding Isaac Asimov, L. Ron Hubbard or Kurt Vonnegut? If so we want you to send in your sci-fi story, MAX 2,000 words, MUST be set in St. Leonards, £5 entry fee. Will run more details in April/May issue. The

Outrageous Decadence Ball

2011

By Liz Maynard

S

t Leonards and Hastings took part in a brilliant night. Special thanks to the fantastic evening of entertainment and Assembly Rooms team who were the perfect dancing this New Year s Eve after the hosts and provided such a marvellous venue. Outrageous Decadence team decided to put on a night to remember at The Assembly Rooms in Burton St Leonards. 200 bohemian merrymakers turned out in all their flamboyant finery, ranging from slick suits and cocktail dresses to glittery disco divas to the outright surreal. The night kicked off with Bob Ents Bingo, followed by Naomi Lovett s wonderfully exotic dancing. The Lambrini Sisters delighted the crowd with their ukulele take on well-known classics and Dusty s dance moves left little to the imagination! DJ Moritzi, Pink Minx and Bob Ents provided an eclectic mix of party tunes and kept the crowd dancing into the early hours of 2011. As if all that wasn t enough, an enchanted forest room gave party-goers a magical space to enjoy some wonderful early French pop videos, while The Absinthe Fairy served a fine tonic or two from her silver tray adding a little fire to the evening. More fairies abounded with the Sparkle Fairy and Wish Fairies adorning the crowd with glitter and good (and not so good) fortune. All in all, the night was a resounding success for everyone involved, who not only had a fabulous party but also managed to raise over £1000 for the Sara Lee Trust. Outrageous Decadence would like to extend their thanks to everyone who made it such a BOHEMIA VILLAGE VOICE

n a week of solar eclipses and meteor showers, the all important question is: what shines brighter than attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion? Hastings very own Eat The Party have all the answers, and this goes far beyond the suavely shimmering footwear of Mister Del Guapo. They look good. ETP don t do T-shirt-n-jeans indifference. They are immaculate as a matter of course. Del s suit is shiny-shiny, his shoes glitter, his hair is severe, and there is always a tie. The boy means business. Laura has been vacuumsealed into her little black dress. She is porcelain of complexion and lithe of limb. The kind of girl who glides where angels fear to tread. The house lights fade and the stage is bathed in dusk-like electric blue.

The sound is magnificent. The drums and the bass rumble menacingly through the room but don t bounce around noisily, or dissolve in distortion. The guitar is full-bodied and crystal clear, yet doesn t overwhelm or screech. The vocals begin a shade thinner than ideal, but warm up as the first number progresses and remain full and convincing from that point onwards. As to comparisons (for those that haven t yet had the pleasure) ETP locate themselves somewhere in the solar system of Blondie, New Order, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Goldfrapp. They re original and they know it, but they re not up-themselves about it, or trying too hard to look as if they re not trying too hard, which is very refreshing.

NEWS THE ROOMS REOPENS The Bohemia Village Voice is very pleased to report that The Rooms on Western Road is soon to re-open. Its closure last month struck horror into the hearts of all gig-goers and sociable persons in St. Leonards but hooray for Carol who has come to the rescue and got back behind the bar. Carol said she has been absolutely overwhelmed by support and had no idea how well-loved The Rooms was. We wish her every success. One of the first events in the new schedule is The Bohemia Club s very own Samedi Gras celebration on the 5th of March. DINING SO FINE! Sussex Coast College s training restaurant Food for Thought would like to let you know about the incredibly fantastic lunch and dinner services they run in their swanky dining room at the new college. TYRONE WILDMAN Local legend Tyrone Wildman had a LOT of fans and several of them have popped into the office to let us know just how much he is going to be missed and what an inspiration he was to them. Tyrone died suddenly of a Pulmonary Embolism on the 18th of December. He was a fantastically fit man who had played an indoor cricket match for Sidley just 13 days before. He was so wellloved, tributes have flooded in from hundreds of people whose lives he touched. Originally from Kingston Jamaica, Tyrone was a well-known sprinter. He was spotted by a tutor from Hastings College and won a scholarship to the area in 1972. Tyrone arrived at Sidley Cricket Club in 1974 and stayed there, becoming club president and a life member. Tyrone won Mr Brighton twice in three years, and appeared on the front cover of natural bodybuilding magazines. He had worked as a fitness instructor at Falaise for the last 16 years and had a reputation there for making every single member feel thoroughly welcome. Tyrone, who didn t drink or smoke, last competed in the Natural Physique Association South East Championships only three months ago. Tyrone is well-remembered and missed by all those that knew him.

BOHEMIAN GRAVE In answer to the question posed by David Russell in the last issue of the Bohemia Village Voice (Where is Bohemia Cemetery?) Some enthusiastic readers came in, having done a bit of detective work with some photocopies of some beautiful old maps of the Bohemia area (pictured). So Bohemia Cemetary was on the Oval, just behind the school. Could this in in anyway effect plans for development of this area? 25

dog poop did not even feature on my agenda. Time has passed, we're all grown up and not so enamored with acres of grass (it needs mowing don't you know) and said dogs have sadly passed away. We have succumbed to the town way of life and my little pup has done the same, nowadays dog poop is a (twice) daily feature in my life and the humble poo bag is a necessity. The pup does not like to poop at home and would much rather wait until he has reached a communal area for his ablutions meaning that those little poo bags can be found in my handbag, my jeans, my coat pocket, the car, at work, pretty much everywhere, they are the ultimate dog owners accessory. So, why is it do I feel sometimes like I am the only person with them? Picking up poop is not glamorous and sometimes it's risky, (the pup's new game is to poop up steep slopes or in flower beds) whilst looking at me as if to say "go on, get that one"! It makes me sad to see owners just walk away from steaming piles, especially in the centre of a footpath. You wouldn't just leave your child's dirty nappy in the middle of your hall would you?? I have been known to hand out spare bags to strangers whose dog has just defaced the pavement, to mixed reaction. I have been told where to go and also thanked graciously (because everyone gets caught short once in a while). So, if you see a smug looking pup watching his owner clamber through flower beds, poo bag in hand, do spare a thought that not all dog owners are irresponsible, we do not all deserve to be tarnished with the same (dog)brush and a lot of us are just as disgusted about un-cleared dog poop as you.

editor@bohemiavillage.com To the Editor - The stretch of road from London Road, past the primary school to Southwater Road must win the award of Bohemia's foulest street. Dog mess every metre or so and directly outside our local primary school. Do we have the most selfish dog owners of the town? Clearly. Something must be done, but what? My vote is for DSTV to catch the culprits, then they can be identified and neutered - once and for all. Mark Curry, St Peters Road Dear Editor, People walk their obviously large dogs around our block late at night. Most do not even think about picking up the crap and those that do, put it in bags then drop them in the gutter. That's almost worse as nothing washes them away and you get to park on them. I have asked the council for a bin to help people do the right thing. Guess what? Nothing happend. I love dogs but despair when I have to dodge steaming piles of crap on the pavement. Sadly, people who let their dogs foul our pavements will not be reading your lovely publication, they don't care what we think or what their dogs leave behind. Sally Walton, St Leonards Dear Editor, As a child I was lucky enough to be a country kid, which made the family dogs even luckier as they had acres of land to amuse themselves in and secret "dog toilet" corners, I'm not sure that they even knew what a lead was therefore

&SCI-FI -

When we were first approached about doing a window display for the Bohemia Village Voice February issue we were very intrigued about the possibilities surrounding the theme of Love, Art and Sci Fi. Our initial thoughts surrounded 50 s Sci Fi B-Movies, especially Ed Wood. We liked the way these movies were made very very economically but had a certain charm about them, even though the flying saucers were hardly disguised as being made of card and tin foil. However we felt the angle of 50 s B-Movies wouldn t fit well with the love aspect of the issue, as the movies were mostly themed around cautionary tales of horror and the threat of invasion. We were thinking that as the issue also had a call for entries for a short story competition, based around Sci Fi in St. Leonards it would be nice to add positive elements of a future St.Leonards, hence the love robots and smiling alien. We also wanted to make something that leaves more to the imagination, almost like a fill in the blanks . Short stories are about using your BOHEMIA VILLAGE VOICE

FUN and FOOLERY

Diane Haberstroh writes from Bohemia, New York

This issue we re all about eggs!

Hunting wild turkeys . . . in Bohemia Riposo s EGG CUTLETS. From Margaret Pitcairn-Knowles s book - 60 Favourite Riposo Vegetarian Recipes 5 eggs Squeeze of lemon juice 1½ oz. butter Pinch of salt 1½ oz. flour Deep fat for frying 1 gill milk (quarter pint) 1½ oz. fine breadcrumbs

Boil the eggs hard and chop roughly. Make a panada by melting the butter and mixing in the flour, then gradually adding the milk, beating well and boiling up each time the milk is added. Mix the eggs and the panada, then add the breadcrumbs, lemon juice and salt to taste. Allow the mixture to cool, then form into cutlets. Egg and breadcrumb, and fry in deep fat. Thanks to Richard Pitcairn-Knowles for giving us this recipe.

It was at the Connetquot River State Park that I first saw wild turkeys. Several years ago, they were fairly common at the park. Whenever I saw them, they would be feasting on seeds spilled on the ground by the much smaller birds at the park s birdfeeder. It was not exactly how I expected I would see these impressive birds in the wild, feeding on spilled seed, but I was still thrilled to see them. They looked just like the Thanksgiving holiday pictures that decorated my elementary school. A few years ago, turkeys became an issue on Long Island. Local newspaper reported on how bothersome the turkeys had become. People complained that turkeys made too much noise and that they dirtied backyards. To solve the problem, it was decided that turkeys would be added to the short list of animals that can be hunted on Long Island. So, starting a few years ago, the New York State granted permits for turkey hunting on Long Island. The license fee is $10 and hunters can only kill one bird during four days in November, appropriately just before Thanksgiving. I don t consider this to be a good deal for the hunters. For about the same price of the license, one could buy a ready-for-the-oven turkey, and it would even include a pop-up thermometer. Whether the turkey hunt season has solved the problem of turkey droppings in people s backyards, I do not know. Since I never had this problem, I never thought about it much, but I was puzzled at why I stopped seeing the turkeys at Connetquot Park, since no hunting is allowed there. I asked one of the park employees What happened to the turkeys in the park? He sadly replied, They ve been decimated by the foxes. Although my heart sank, I found comfort in knowing that it was a situation designed by nature and not man. BOHEMIA VILLAGE VOICE
