Hello! Welcome to the new look Bohemia Village Voice, I hope you like it. I think it looks brilliant and I would like to say a big thank you to Erica Smith for helping me get it together and a big thank you to Thaddeus Skews - our cover artist. Also, to all you new advertisers that have given us some smart-looking new ads and of course all the old advertisers for keeping the faith, without you the Bohemia Village Voice simply wouldn’t be possible - thanks a million. Well it has been a busy year here in Bohemia and some of you may have noticed that I went galivanting around Europe with a band called Quintron and Miss Pussycat for a few weeks instead of putting out the Oct/Nov issue. Well, that was hoot! And since the trip I have been inspired to put more shows on in St. Leonards and Hastings. So keep your eyes and ears peeled for Bohemia Club events. In this ‘ere issue we are looking at all good and jolly stuff. So grab yourself a bottle of Queen Margot, put your feet up and enjoy some good news and cheerful pictures. RIGHT NOW is a great time to be in St. Leonards and Hastings! Sarah Janes, Editor

Mugsborough Images of Edwardian Hastings 15th January - 27th March The Ragged- Trousered Philanthropists of Robert Tressell’s novel, set in Edwardian Hastings, or Mugsborough, as he called it, were his fellow painters and labourers, employed on the lowest of wages, but too cowed even to protest at their plight. In his eyes they became benefactors or ‘philanthropists’ to their middle-class bosses, conniving in the deep social divide that separated workers from the better off. At a time of severe recession, when many in Hastings were close to starvation, there was a groundswell of left-wing opinion in the country, seen in local social democratic and labour movements. This exhibition provides a snapshot of the Edwardian Hastings that Tressell lived in and includes extensive archive material, photographs, costume and other ephemera from the permanent collection. Also featured in the exhibition will be a series of caricatures by political illustrator Harry Furniss highlighting a contrasting view of the somewhat frivolous and lavish aristocracy of this time. News The New Look Bohemia Village Voice Well? What do you think? I thought long and hard about how to restyle the Bohemia Village Voice and in the end I went with a look not entirely dissimilar to a Richard Scarry tome. Many, many thanks go to Erica Smith for helping me realise my vision and giving up a whole Sunday to do so. Thaddeus Skews, our cover artist, produced the colourful picture and if you’d like him to draw something for you, email him on: unicorndad@live.com

an illuminating talk on an important aspect of our history. Please look out for more details closer to the time. Christmas in St. Leonards Have you strolled around St. Leonards recently? If so, you must have noticed that we seem to be experiencing a bit of a small-business boom, the diversity, quality and attractiveness of many of the shops in St. Leonards now easily gives the Old Town of Hastings a run for its money. To celebrate this, Central St. Leonards business owners are presenting a dynamic and united front with an allout effort for Christmas this year and they have many exciting plans to impress residents, and the increasing number of visitors from out of town. St. Leonards small businesses really can satisfy all your Christmas shopping needs. There’s a great deal of positivity around St. Leonards at the moment and this will be reflected in a fantastic show of performance, lighting, decorations, competitions and community involvement. On Saturday December 4th the St. Leonards Business Association are planning a spectacular evening of Light and Sound and the streets from Warrior Square station to the seafront will be alive with singers, musicians, street performers and entertainers. There will be further festivities on Saturday December the 18th

Turkish Bath Update I had a tremendous response to my article in the last issue of the Bohemia Village Voice about the Turkish Bath on West Hill Road. Graham Jones, the owner, has told the Bohemia Village Voice that there have been some interesting developments regarding the building’s future. A consortium has been formed with the intention of buying the property and opening it up to the public – the finer details of the plans are still a mystery, but it seems that this fascinating building will hopefully be sensitively preserved for the people of our town, which is wonderful news. Also The Bohemia Village Voice, in collaboration with Catherine Walling, curator at the Hastings Museum & Art Gallery on Bohemia Road, have arranged with Malcolm Shifrin, author of www.victorianturkishbath.org to give a talk at the Museum in July. An authority on Victorian bathing culture, Malcolm has a wealth of knowledge on the bathing establishments in Hastings & St. Leonards and this promises to be

when participating businesses will be opening later than usual and offering customers festive treats and experiences to get everyone in the mood for Christmas. This Christmas Shopping Day runs till 7pm.

The Bohemia Brunch Club at The Rooms The Bohemia Brunch Club has proved to be a tremendous success, so far we’ve had two incarnations, one Mexican themed and one Raj. They’ve been packed out every time and clearly demonstrate the appetite for

somewhere family-friendly and a little raucous on a Sunday afternoon in St. Leonards. In fact, I’m delighted to say that it has proved to be so popular that I’ve teamed up with Erika Holland – formerly of the Gritti Palace on the pier, and without doubt the hostess with the mostess – to cope with demand. The next Brunch Club will be a special Saturday Brunch Club as part of the St. Leonards Christmas Shopping Day and will be Alpine-themed. We start at 1pm, expect fondue, Swiss Rolls and yodelling and lots of other Alpine-related deliciousness. We always have engaging activities for children, always serve tasty, good value, wholesome food and children eat free. There will also be a really interesting market for Christmas gift-buying which will include alternative vinyl purveyors, Edgeworld Records (from Brighton), Ruby Dixie’s jewellery, The Bohemia Club itself and a number of other local artists and crafty makers. There will also be a gift-wrapping service so you can hide your gifts from peeping peepers. This is going to be a lovely event so bring the family and make a day of it. The Rooms, 33.35 Western Road, St. Leonards, TN37 6DJ.

Bohemia Spring It was a while ago now but I would like to mention once again just how marvellous the Sharing of the Spring ceremony held in Bohemia (Summerfields) Woods was. A million thanks to everyone that got involved and especially; Garland Hearse, Jane Marriner, Sarah Yates and Lorna Crabbe from Coastal Currents, Jakki Pranski and Pam Glew and of course the hoardes of you that attended and made it so very magical.

Bohemia Walled Garden The campaign to get this wonderful walled garden back into use is

If you’d like find out more about the latest developments in the garden look here: http://bohemiawga.weebly.com Bohemia Walled Garden over the summer, it was fantastic to see our garden in use and so many people enjoying themselves within its special walls. All Hastings Directory A new, all-Hastings town directory is being compiled at the offices of the Bohemia Village Voice. ‘Work started in 2009’ says publisher John Humphries, ‘we have a list of all businesses, voluntary and other organisations in Hastings and are currently checking the data by telephone’. If YOU would like to be a volunteer helping research information, are relaxed on the phone and can spare a few hours each week, the ‘Voice’ would love to hear from you. Tel: 01424 430460 or 07891 634 377 (John). It is planned to launch the new directory early next year. Features

Enterprising Magic! By Sarah Janes In this feature I’ll be taking a look at some of my favourite shops and enterprises in Hastings and St. Leonards. We have a lot of creative individuals in this town and this is well represented by the increasing number of interesting new businesses injecting vitality into the area. Use them or lose them ...

The Bohemia Club Is an organisation run by the editor of your favourite local magazine, ahem, The Bohemia Village Voice. We run a monthly brunch club at The Rooms and host irregular live music shows (mainly featuring alternative American acts) and other happenings. We were responsible for the Sharing of the Spring ceremony – as part of Coastal Currents, The Maritime Ball (picture) with Quintron and

Amongst Other Things I know they’ve been there a while now but Beth and Toby of

Miss Pussycat from New Orleans and the special Thanksgiving Show at the Brass Monkey with Cave from Chicago. Amongst Other Things on Western Road have a lovely shop, full of vintage home-things, children’s clothes, shoes and books. They also do screen-printing in the basement and have a range of prints for sale. The Bridge Veg Bag Scheme If you haven’t yet visited the Bridge Community Centre on Priory Road, you are missing out, it is a fantastic facility which was built according to the specifications of those that use it - unusually good sense in these senseless times. It is therefore a great, light and lovely building to be in, that makes the most of the space and natural light afforded it, and is able to accommodate all the activities they offer very adequately. As reported in our last issue they are now running a veg bag scheme which is really exceptionally good value, all produce is local and organic and your bag even comes with a newsletter of recipe ideas to make the most of seasonal produce (I contributed my recipe for Beetroot, Chocolate and Ginger Cake to the last issue). Call 01424 433 611.

Active Hastings Active Hastings is simply brilliant! And demonstrates that there really are some benefits in living in a ‘deprived’ town. Let’s hope they continue to get funding as their programme of activities, events, courses and fitness sessions are just marvellous. My personal favourite being yoga with Laura on Monday mornings up at the Hollington youth centre (free crèche), and the cheap get-in and aerobics workout at Clambers on Thursday mornings. Absolutely GREAT! Pick up a brochure from one of the participating venues or search for Active Hastings online. Groovy Gnu Emma Law’s music and movement workshops for pre-school kids. Great fun but also a wonderful learning tool. Children love singing, dancing and playing around with musical instruments and it’s extremely good for all aspects of their future learning too. Emma runs a number of groups all over Hastings and St. Leonards – Call Emma on 01424 200 289.

Features Charity Shops Too many to mention, but let’s hope that once the gentrification of St. Leonards starts proper we don’t lose any more of them. I once had a big argument with an estate agent about charity shops in St. Leonards, I think they are great, and should be encouraged. There is a

In the Pink

A new home furnishing shop on Bohemia Road, In the Pink, has livened up Bohemia Road with their colourful pink paint job and sparkly interior no end. They sell an eclectic mix of slightly quirky and luxurious home furnishings. Love Café & Market The new market and café on London Road has attracted a good deal of media attention in the national press, largely due to the fact that Ben Eine’s wall mural of a pixelated Prince Charles adorns their primary wall. They’re doing a great job of livening up St. Leonards and it’s simply great to see a lively and colourful market in what was a bit of thoroughly unused space. I’ve also heard rumours that the café is excellent and that their coffee is the best in St. Leonards – go and find out for yourself. Made with Love A new ceramic painting café on Queens Road. I recently took my three year old daughter in there and failed to get her to decorate anything functional but we now have a lovely psychedelic elephant on the mantelpiece, of which she is very proud. Made with Love have a great range of ceramic kitchenware and knick-knacks to decorate – and there’s something for everyone price and style-wise. I personally think these are absolutely super ideas for presents for loved ones, especially if you’ve got small arty children. BOHEMIA VILLAGE VOICE

77

real culture of charity shopping here which would be sorely missed if Kings Road and London Road get too fancy. Bexhill have got the balance right. The aforementioned estate agent was telling me that charity shops single a place out as deprived and therefore lower the housing prices so he can’t make as much money. Well, whilst this is a real tragedy for estate agents, charity shops are frankly a thorough good, especially the little local ones like the St. Michael’s Hospice and HRVAB (pictured). They encourage recycling, reusing and more often than not, their second-hand wares are of infinitely better quality that new bought items and yet are massively cheaper. Everyone is a winner! Go and shop in your local charity shop right now. If the charity shops do find themselves priced out of central St. Leonards, how about making a charity shop treasure trove on Bohemia Road? This suitably named thoroughfare could suit charity shops very well, and were there sufficient numbers of them lumped together, it could become a real attraction for bargain hunters and vintage fashionistas. Simone’s Delicatessen Former chef to royalty opens St. Leonards delicatessen, sounds about right, pop into this King’s Road deli and sample some grub fit for a king.

Features Coast East Dulwich’s first high-quality café has come to St. Leonards. This is a great little London-style coffee bar with a terrific atmosphere. The perfect place to sit and watch the street entertainment and to put your feet up after a busy afternoon trawling the charity shops. Di Pola’s Ice Cream Parlour Officially my favourite ice cream in Hastings. Located in one of the newly refurbished buildings at the West End of the Old Town, this is a lovely clean and spacious shop. Dozens of really delicious flavours of authentic Italian gelato made on the premises by Roberto di Pola. I think there are few things lovelier than sitting in a sunny ice cream parlour in the midst of a raging winter. Plenty Helen Truman at Plenty stocks a wide range of local and organic, luxury edibles and household provisions. Bread from the famous Lighthouse Bakery near Bodiam sells like hotcakes and Plenty is the only place in St. Leonards to get really specialist cooking ingredients. Hastings Pier Shop Officially the most gorgeous shop in the whole of Hastings, the old Arthur Green shop on the seafront has all the original fixtures and fittings from when it was a stylish men’s outfitters. It’s an interior that has Paul Smith literally frothing at the mouth and is now stocked with locally produced artful knick-knacks, clothing and gifts in support of the Pier Trust. The fire (pictured), we are told, may well turn out to be a blessing in disguise as the plight of the pier was made a national story and monies and support is pouring in. Contribute to the flood yourself by spending a few pennies in the Hastings Pier Shop, you’ll also be supporting local artists and makers, win, win!

Shakeaway Hastings and Sussex Coast College students are literally cock-a-hoop with the new Shakeaway Milkshake bar that has opened up in the town centre. A sort of magnet for teenagers, this colourful shop offers a wide range of calorific chocolate bar/candy/snack haemorrhages which reduce throngs of young tearaways into affectionate, giggling gaggles – just what we need, good luck Shakeaway! Look out for their exceedingly sickly but delicious Christmas specials such as Christmas pudding, mince pie and brandy butter shakes. Wasabi Hut I am so delighted that finally Hastings and St. Leonards can now boast a really tasty sushi place. Sushi is absolutely my most favourite food in the world and I have been known to travel to Brighton quite regularly to get my raw fish fix at E-Kagen. You can always tell when a sushi place is any cop because there will be some Japanese people there making appreciative noises and on both of the occasions I have visited, there have been Japanese people doing just that and then, even better, giving the chef a thumbsup through the window (seriously! I kid you not). So anyway, now I can save my train fare to Brighton and just walk to the new Wasabi Hut on Marine Parade. Canadians Eldi and Marco Skubay have lived in Hastings for five years and thoroughly share my passion for sushi. I’m of the opinion that their business venture really fills a gap in the market in the Old Town and if you are a sushi fan too, I suggest you get down there sharpish and check it out. Their sushi is really, really excellent value, great quality and they offer a fantastic service. Delivery and party catering is also available. Please tell them I sent you! St Leonard’s Film Society The lack of an actual cinema doesn’t put off the St. Leonards Film Society, who organise screenings of a wide variety of films all over the place. Screenings for children in conjunction with In2Play and local film-maker/artist showcase screenings. See our event section for more details.

in fact the same Marguerite. From then on the premises were occupied sporadically, e.g. in 1952 Mrs Jenkins – wardrobe dealer in one half and Hastings Radio and Television Co. in the other, but only for a short while; then in 1959 J. Simmonds – furniture dealer. It was not until 1961 that No. 127 became what it has continued to be ever since . . . BOOKMAN’S HALT. It seems that the same Mr. Simmonds operated the bookshop until 1965 when Mr. F. Moore (a retired civil servant) took proprietorship, and continued until 1978, when Michael Bloxham ran it for a brief period. 1980 was when Clive Linklater became the youthful new proprietor. It is significant that 30 years on Clive still manages his business – one of the few to survive for any length of time in Bohemia Road under the same ownership. Indeed Bookman’s Halt is now the only seriously operating second-hand and antiquarian bookseller in town. It is a thriving business which manages to maintain that mystique which encourages browsers to search for the rarity at 50p which is really worth £90. It can be done, and I still have the book as proof. Long may the Later Link continue.

ohemia Road was developed in an apparently haphazard fashion, in short terraces on the north-east side. Its numbering was only finally settled in 1902/3. The property which then became no. 127, has had an interesting variety of uses. From that date until 1913, it was occupied by the Liberal Club. Then, after a short break, an antique dealer, Mr. Martin took the premises until 1920, when Stone Bros. – RAT TRAP manufacturers became the occupants. Whether the rats were trapped too quickly, or Stones wanted to improve their image is not clear, but the following year, they became antique dealers. Following that, Mr. Quinlan ran the shop as a stationer’s but only briefly; for in 1923, F.A. Orin – toy and fancy dealer moved in, also stocking fishing tackle (an odd combination). A major change came in 1929. Miss M.E. Willcox opened the shop as a missionary depot, and in 1933 she added a stationery department. It may have been at that stage that the doubleentrance doors were installed, for the following year, one side was numbered 127a, with Marguerite – a milliner. Her occupancy was short-lived, followed by Mrs. M. Newick who ran a ladies’ outfitters. It may have been that she was Regular readers may detect some slight changes in this issue. THE PUBS OF BOHEMIA - No 5 by David Russell

The Prince of Wales, 84, Bohemia Road Richard Moy, was first landlord and applied for a full licence in 1863 and 1864. He moved here from the 'Cross Keys', Marylebone in about 1860. The Prince of Wales was the second fully licensed pub in Bohemia after the Wheatsheaf in 1835. A Coroner's Inquest was held at the pub in 1872, into the 'shocking suicide' of a 40 year old gardener who lived nearby in Bohemia Road. He was found by his wife hanging from a bed post by a piece of clothes line. Their eleven year old son was a witness. His father had said to him: 'Goodbye, I shall be missing when you come home from school, be a good boy to your mother and go to school'. The Inquest concluded that he had 'committed suicide whilst in a state of temporary insanity'. He was buried in Bohemia Cemetery. (Where is Bohemia Cemetery?) During WW2 the pub was run by Roland 'Jack' Berwick. Roland worked as a 'Gentleman's Gentleman' for an American millionaire before the war and ran the pub from 1944 until his death in 1946. His widow, Maggie May Berwick, took over until 1948. After the war the Prince of Wales had returning prisoners of war among its customers and this is where Roland's daughter Lena Berwick met her future husband Norman Sendall. Their daughter was born here in 1947. Norman and Lena ran the

84 Bohemia Rd, Sept 2010

FILO until 1948. The family now live in Silverhill. The pub closed in 1971 and the building became the home of Gwen Watford an English film, stage, and television actress. Watford trained at the Old Vic and made her film début playing Lady Usher in The Fall of the House of Usher (1949). Other films included Cleopatra, (1963) and Cry Freedom (1987). After her death in 1994 the building became the headquarters of Hastings Labour Party. o David (200227) is interested in Hastings & St Leonards’ pub memories & photos.

Flickers’ final cut by Bill Third Peter Feist of hairdressing salon “Flickers” on Tower Road finally hung up his scissors and hair-dryers at the end of August after 30 years of business at this address. He started hairdressing in London in 1960, training up in London with Raymond – ‘Mr. Teasie Weasie’ (below), Peter with Elvira Griffin the UK’s first celebrity hairdresser, before moving to Eastbourne to head up a Raymond salon there, and then on to his own business in St.Leonards. “Everything has come together, I reached the retirement age of 65, the lease expired, so it was time to call it a day. Teasie Weasie was very good training at the time, but things have moved on a lot since then.” On the day prior to closing, the salon was busy with several regulars at various stages of treatment. So what kept them coming back? Pamela Stapely said, “ He’d only just begun here when I started coming. He always said he would manage to fit you in, if you didn’t mind waiting a little.” Elvira Griffin said, “I just like the way he does my hair.” Once you find a hairdresser you like you keep on coming back. Like every successful hairdresser Peter has the necessary skill as a crimper, as well as charm, chat and being a good listener. One client who comes in once a month comes all the way from the Isle of Wight, others travel from Bexhill and Battle. When a sole trader packs in his or her business, there are no colleagues to organize going away parties, hand over bunches of flowers or make speeches. But perhaps this article will help express thanks on behalf of all the ladies in Bohemia and beyond who Peter has kept looking their best for the last 30 years. BOHEMIA VILLAGE VOICE

Diane Haberstroh writes from Bohemia, New York

An Immortal Child “The first step to eternal life, is you have to die.” – Chuck Palahniuk

O

ne of the strangest chapters in our local history concerns one man’s experiment in eternal life. Back in 1940, newspapers including the New York Times, were reporting on the sensational story of a cult leader residing in Oakdale who had adopted a baby girl in order to test his recipe for immortality. He believed that if a person is fed only positive thoughts and wholesome foods beginning in infancy that person could live forever. James B. Schafer, leader of the Royal Fraternity of Master Metaphysicians, adopted “Baby Jean” from a New York City waitress. In 1938, a couple of years before the adoption, Schafer purchased the old Oakdale Vanderbilt estate, now Dowling College. He named his estate Peace Haven. The membership fee for living at Peace Haven was $100 in 1938, but later that was increased to $300. Those who participated in the program were forbidden to have meat, coffee, spices, alcohol or tobacco. Schafer lectured to his followers on themes such as positive thinking and how to obtain maximum wealth and health. When he adopted Jean, several members showered this youngest member with extravagant gifts, such as a diamond and pearl ring. Schafer was gaining notoriety through the many newspaper accounts of his “Baby Jean” experiment, but about a year later Jean’s birth mother requested and received her child back. Membership in the Royal Fraternity of Master Metaphysicians dwindled and the Peace Haven property was sold in foreclosure. Schafer was convicted of stealing $9,000 from a former member and he was sentenced to SingSing prison. After being returned to her mother, Jean seemed to have had a normal life. Decades later, a newspaper reported that she was married and living a normal Long Island suburban life, with no memory of her Peace Haven days. Ironically, the man who was obsessed with immortality committed suicide in 1955 at his home in West Nyack, New York, about ten years after his release from prison. Diane Haberstroh

Letters Neighbourhood Watch Dear Editor, I am now the co-ordinator for Neighbourhood Watch in St Peter’s Road. If anyone is interested in joining the scheme, please contact myself or PCSO Andy Hubbard on 07787 865793. Thank you. Nicole Barrett, 17, St Peter’s Road. Missing sock Dear Editor, I am sure I know the answer to Mrs Hunter’s missing sock [Voice 76 ‘Letters’, Aug 2010]. Eric Hardwick, M.B.E. and I were out looking for young birds when we sighted what we thought was a purple-heeled sock (Sockus stinkus). Eric, a true preserver of wildlife, shot it and it is now preserved in pickling vinegar in a jar on his mantelpiece, though I am not too sure of his ‘Book of Birds’ – has he any phone numbers to spare? Vic Chalcraft, Aldborough Road Dear Vic, Seeing as you are so interested in birds, I might draw your attention to the wonderful exhibition currently showing at our very own museum on Bohemia Road. Here you can see a fabulous display of rare birds - allbethem stuffed - and marvel at the work of thirteen artists that have been inspired by one of the greatest scandals to hit the world of ornithology ever! – Ed. Children’s Centres Dear Bohemia Village Voice, We were delighted to read in your latest edition, (Village Voice issue 76 Aug/Sep 2010) of the high praise of Hastings & St Leonards Children’s Centres. There is a huge amount of work that goes on in Children’s Centres across Hastings & St Leonards in the interest of families in the town and this is thanks to the many partner agencies who help to deliver and support the work in Children’s Centres. On a separate note, would it be possible to promote Silverdale Children’s Centre? This Centre is located on the Silverdale School site in Perth Road and is accessible to many families living in the local area and we feel that having contact details for the Centre in the directory may be useful to the many families who want to access services. The number is 01424 460112. I hope you are able to help and thank you all within the team for the fantastic work you do putting the Bohemia Village Voice together…no mean feat! Kind Regards Donna Meenan Dear Donna, I heartily concur and as someone who uses the facilities of Silverdale Children's Centre weekly I am thoroughly grateful for the services you provide there. We are so lucky in Hastings and St. Leonards to have this brilliant organisation putting in such a tremendous amount of leg-work. To all parents and carers out there I recommend you try out Silverdale Children's Centre. It's wonderful! Try Crafty Elves on Wednesday mornings and Starlings (singing group) on Friday mornings, all FREE – Ed.
