Principal Services Sundays 10am Parish Eucharist 1st Sunday of the month 8.00am Eucharist BCP he Church’s year comes to an end on the feast of Christ the King on 23rd of November 2008. This is a relatively recent and new celebration for The Church of England which was borrowed from the Roman Catholic Calendar but now officially adopted and celebrated in honour of the all embracing authority of Christ. It was instituted by Pope Pius XI in the encyclical Quas primas of 11 December 1925. From 1970 it has been kept on the last Sunday before the beginning of Advent.

T

Advent is the time when we think and pray about the ‘last things and looking toward the future.’ Our Bible readings are filled with expectation and hope, a very positive time looking forward to the establishment of God’s Kingdom on earth. It is also a time when God’s justice and judgement is in the air and when people need to be reconciled in conscience to God’s forgiveness and love. It is a time also as preparation for Christ’s Birth, Christmas! I know children get very excited about the lead up to Christmas and that it is great fun, but some parents might find this Christmas a little more difficult than last due to the economic climate at present and I sincerely hope it will not be for you. Whatever we have, make the most of Christmas and celebrate together in families and groups by sharing resources and welcoming Christ into your home! Have a wonderful Christmas. With warm regards, yours in Christ, Fr. Alex.

Cliff Richard’s Christmas trees for sale Alison. “Cliff has retired from doing it now, and the man was selling the trees off.. They’re really nice [see picture, below] and they’ve only ever been used for one evening a year.” The Christmas shop, on the corner of Bohemia Road and Newgate Road, is now open daily, run by Alison, Terry, and Alison’s husband Paul. “We’ve also got a lady called Wendy starting on 25th November on work experience. She’s been bringing up her children so she hasn’t been in work for a while.”

Evergreen Cliff’s evergreen (well, eversilver) trees for sale

A chance meeting in Polegate led to a marvellous opportunity for Alison Ansell and her Christmas Shop. Innovative Alison, of Cheap and Cheerful in Bohemia Road, got talking to the man who used to organise Cliff Richard’s Tennis Classic event in Birmingham. “Every year Cliff has this charity event, and the man I met gets Christmas trees to put on the stage,” explained

Wendy’s work experience placement was arranged by New Deal. “Two ladies from Tomorrow’s People came and checked out everything with a fine-toothed comb. I gave Wendy a proper interview, and she’ll be with us for thirteen weeks. William, one of my twins, will be coming to work here on Saturdays”. Alison, Paul and Terry have been working hard to get a grotto ready for Father Christmas, who will be visiting the shop every Friday and Saturday except the twelfth, when he has an engagement elsewhere.

Bohemia Village Voice No. 66

Please write to Bohemia Village Voice (address on p 3). Please note that letters may be abridged to fit.

Wheelie bins Dear Sir, I enjoyed the article in Voice about the wheelie bin dispute. There is a street in Ipswich where you can hardly pass along a narrow pavement because the occupants of a terrace of Victorian houses all have to keep their bins on the path. In G e r m a n y groups of houses tend to have communal bins locked in little sheds. In Bologna they have large wheelie bins just left in the street among the parked cars and anyone uses them. This morning I’ve been prowling the back streets of Ipswich with my camera concealed under my brown raincoat and send a photo [below] for your publication. Peter Winder, Manningtree, Essex.

Bert Northwood & the old days Dear Sir, it was with much interest I read this article on Bert Northwood, as I was one of the founders, along with Bert, forming a local area association. The other originals were a Mr & Mrs Cousons and Bill Knight. On the original agenda was car parking, especially Salisbury Road, horse riding in Newgate Fields and someone using an airgun by the YMCA. Now to Mrs Vinall’s letter: the double fronted gents’ outfitters was Wards and also associated with Stapley’s Shoe Shop was a Bill Sirius who lived in Newgate Road. As for the Clinic on the corner of Upper Park and Upper Clarence Roads, this was also the lair of a Mr Penfold, schools’ dentist, much hated by school children. Opposite was the residence of the local midwife and district nurse. On a modern note, how many people realise that Bob, of ESK fame, started his business in a little shop in Bohemia Road? Vic Chalcraft, Aldborough Road.

Mystery stone Dear Sir, regarding the memorial stone [Letters, Voice 65, Nov ‘08] near the police station at Summerfields, the tree was planted in memory of one of the policemen, because the police contributed to Guide Dogs for the Blind. My aunt and uncle lived at nearby Pooh House for thirty years. It used to be the Matron’s House for Summerfields School. When they first moved in, it was out in the wilds, as there was not so much development

December 2008

there then. You had to go through the woods to get to the house. My uncle was a sergeant-at-arms at the Town Hall, and my aunt died a few weeks ago. Bohemia Resident.

Prader Willi home Dear Sirs, I am afraid that your last two editions have made me rather angry. Many people in my road, (St Peter’s), are aware of the Prader Willi home. After having spoken to a number of residents / neighbours in our street, I would like to apologise to the residents at their new home as well as the people running it. Apart from ONE of my neighbours, nobody is aware of this socalled St Peter’s Residents’ Association and I would assume that people having lived in this street for most of their life would be involved in such a cause. NONE of the people I have spoken to have any problem with this new home whatsoever. I live opposite and do not have a bad word against our new neighbours. In the end, we would all be the first to send our own children to such a home around the corner if they would need such help. Could the editor of this magazine please ensure that letters written to the editor are from associations that are either officially registered or can prove to have been democratically selected. To the knowledge of many of the residents at St Peters Road there is no such thing as the “St Peters Residents Association”. I would ask for letters from this person, that they be printed with their name under it instead of representing people who they have never spoken to. Nicole Barrett, St Peter’s Road [Nicole, the correspondent had supplied their name and address, but see letter below – ed] Dear Sir, I refer to the letter I sent you last month from the ‘St Peter’s Road Association’. I would like to say that any disparaging comments are very much regretted and that there is no longer a residents’ association. This had been formed on an ad hoc basis, to tackle what we feared was a real problem. We were wrong. I have already apologised to the owners myself. St Peter’s Road resident (name & address supplied)

Surviving Christmas Dear Sir, as you may know, we hire the YMCA in Bohemia for our 3 day Open Christmas but what many people do not realise is that 70% of money raised by our Appeal goes to help older people, families and young people in need via food vouchers or food hampers. To give the same level of help that we gave last Christmas we will need to raise £35,000, which is going to be very difficult given the economic situation. However, we expect the number of requests for our help to be greater than previously and indeed the lists of referrals from professional workers are arriving by every post. Judith Wycherley, Chairman, Surviving Christmas, PO Box 290, Hastings, TN34 9DT. Tel: 01424 424550.

by Diane Haberstroh Continuing our series on Bohemia, in Long Island, New York, librarian Diane reports on the recent US election

I am very happy about the outcome of the election. I’m hopeful that the change will put us in the right direction. A work colleague was telling me that had McCain won the election her son was planning on relocating to another country. Obama’s win was very exciting and it made me realize that our country has truly evolved. Even a couple of years ago, I didn’t believe that we President-elect Obama would ever have a black or a woman president in my lifetime, but here it is. I’m delighted to see this. I am so happy with Obama’s win on several levels and it feels as if the dark clouds have lifted and there is sunlight streaming in again. It makes me feel like our world now has an opportunity to head in a positive direction on many issues. Although I am ecstatic that Obama won, there aren’t a lot of other people in this area delighted with Obama’s win. This is an area where people usually vote Republican, especially in Presidential races. The good news is that people I know who said they voted for McCain are grateful that we will be getting a change, even though their candidate lost. A lot of us (Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, etc), feel like we are finally awakening from a bad dream. Forgive me for going on about the election, as you can tell, I enjoyed this election immensely. There are, if I remember correctly, five ELECTION RESULTS FOR PRESIDENT OF USA Bohemia Recreation Center, Bohemia Barack Obama (Dem): 35 (37%). John McCain (Rep): 58 (62%). Cynthia McKinney (Green): 1 (1%). Connetquot High School, Bohemia Barack Obama: 675 (35%). John McCain: 1,220 (63%). Roger Calero (Socialist Workers): 11 (1%). Gloria La Riva (Socialism & Liberation): 2 (0%). Cynthia McKinney: 2 (0%). Bob Barr (Libertarian): 2 (0%). Ralph Nader (Ind):14 (1%). Edward J Bosti Elem School, Bohemia Barack Obama: 549 (42%). John McCain: 745 (57%). Bob Barr: 2 (0%). Ralph Nader: 5 (0%). John Pearl Elem School, Bohemia Barack Obama: 809 (50%). John McCain: 809 (50%). Roger Calero: 1 (0%). Cynthia McKinney: 3 (0%). polling places in the Bohemia district. You might be surprised by the voting results for this area [table below].

Monster Raving Loony The small parties receive little or no media attention here. I’m sure many people walk into the voting booth on Election Day surprised to see some of these other candidates listed on the ballot. It would be nice if our country could get beyond the two party mania. Many people feel, and rightfully so, that if you vote outside the two major parties—Democrat or Republican, you are throwing your vote away. In the 2000 election, Ralph Nader, who I believe was the Green Party candidate, was seen as one of the reasons Al Gore lost the election. After the 2000 election, it seems like the other parties went from very little media attention to none at all. I know you Christmas puzzle have some strange sounding parties in the UK – I admit that I had to check- This puzzle was sent in out this Monster Raving by Mrs Jo Hunter of St Loony Party. I haven’t seen Peter’s Road. In Short BUSINESS IN BOHEMIA – we all know that the number of shops in Bohemia is steadily diminishing ... or do we? The Voice decided last year to survey our shops and offices to find out. We compiled a list of the business use of property in Bohemia Road and London Road in October last year and again in October this year. The results are surprising ... and encouraging. Although several businesses closed, others opened up and the overall effect was: no change. The actual figures are: AREA

DANE ROAD - planning permission was granted on 10 Oct 2008 by HBC Planning Dept to Belvedere Estates Ltd in relation to 27 Dane Road. The proposed work includes the demolition of the existing chalet bungalow and detached garage and redevelopment of the site to erect twelve flat units with associated amenity and car parking areas and site landscaping. LONDON ROAD – a garden shed was broken into in London Road and three drills were stolen. One was a Spear and Jackson cordless drill, a rotary drill of unknown make and a Kango hammer drill. To date (11 Nov) they have not been recovered. The incident happened sometime between Wed 5th and Thurs 6th November. If you can help contact Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999, quoting reference 859 of the 6th Nov. BOHEMIA ROAD – planning permission was granted on 30 Sep to Mr D Nolan of 148 Bohemia Road. The original application had been amended from two, onebedroom flats to one, 2-bed flat at the same address. The reasons given for granting the application were that ‘There will be no material harm to the neighbourhood in general or to adjoining residents in particular’. BRITTANY ROAD - an application for planning consent was registered on 29 Oct for vertical slate hanging at second floor level beneath the slate elevation of a mansard roof at 2a Brittany Road. The applicant was Mr Morgans of Burgess Hill, West Sussex. BOHEMIA ROAD – planning consent was refused on 29 September for conversion to a single dwelling house at 111 Bohemia Road. The premises are currently used by Opera South East. The applicant was the Magdalen & Lasher Charity of the Old Town, Hastings. Reason for refusal was given as ‘The proposal is in conflict with Hastings Local Planning 2004 and 2007, which seeks to resist the loss of a traditional shopfront or details of architectural or historic interest’. ORGANIST – local resident Alexander Jonathan Bruce from Combermere Road became a professional organist in 1995 and has been the church organist at St Luke’s since 2002. He is available for weddings and other social occcasions. Tel: 425733.

BOHEMIA CLUB – about 20 people attended a party to mark the closing down of the Bohemia Club as a private members club recently. The event raised £97 for St Michael’s Hospice. The Bohemia Club had been running as a private members club for over a hundred years, still in the original premises. Treasurer Vic Chalcraft regretted the end of an era, but said, “It’s a sign of the times.” The club is now going to be run as a snooker club by Clifford Pearse, who owns Cliffords Automobiles, the garage beneath the Bohemia Club premises in Upper South Road. HALLOWE’EN – ghouls, ghosties and witches [picture] attended a fancy-dress party at Cheap and Cheerful on Friday 31st October. “About thirty-six children came, mostly with their mums,” said Alison Ansell, who arranged the event at her shop in Bohemia Road. “There wasn’t room in the shop for everyone, so lots of the mums stood outside. All the curtains were twitching opposite and people saying, ‘What’s going on over there?’ ” First prize for the best fancy dress was a gold skeleton, and there were also second and third prizes. The competition was judged by street bobby Andy Hubbard, who said, “All were scarily amazing, with the children showing a tremendous effort all round.” All the children were given sweets and treats to take home. LONDON ROAD – outline planning permission was given on the 28th October for demolition of the existing houses and erection of 22 flats at 347-349 London Road. The applicant was Mr Rumary c/o CLM Planning, Bexhill. the reason given for approval was ‘Having regard to local plan policy and to all other material considerations and taking account of comments and objections from local residents (and other interested parties) the proposed development/use is considered to be acceptable in principle. There will be no material harm to the neighbourhood in general or to adjoining residents in particular’. SIX-A-SIDE FOOTBALL – a new 6-a-side football league is being formed in Hastings and our local street bobby Andy Hubbard is the man to contact if you want to know more. Hastings Police, East Sussex Fire and Rescue, youth organisations and Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club are launching the 6-a-side football invitation league for youngsters (male and female) aged

Neighbourhood Watch

December 2008

Karate & Kobudo Club

Local street bobby Andy Hubbard gives an update on the efforts being made to recruit NW members. Sussex Police and other local and national agencies are looking for volunteers to join their local Neighbourhood Watch scheme. As the local Police C o m m u n i t y Support Officer I have recently been very busy distributing letters seeking volunteers for both scheme members and more importantly the co-ordiPCSO Andy Hubbard nators to run the scheme. So far there have been over 2,500 letters delivered by both myself and with the grateful assistance of the Hastings Police cadets. In return I have (to date) had over 200 replies for residents wishing to join schemes. On top of this I have also had (to date) 21 people reply with an interest in becoming scheme co-ordinators.

A Taifu Karate & Kobudo club recently opened a new branch at the Red Cross Hall in Newgate Road. The club, which has been training adults and children in Hastings for twenty years, also meets at Summerfields and Hillcrest. Club secretary Jacqueline Patton said, “The opening night was very well attended by present members, who enjoyed the nice friendly atmosphere within the hall. It’s a lovely venue.” She added, “The club has many Black Belts with many years experience, and both male and female instructors. Anyone who wishes to try can just turn up on Thursdays, either to the children’s class at 6-7 pm or the adult beginners’ class at 7-8 pm. No, you don’t have to be fit or flexible or be able to fly, but these might help!” [picture: courtesy of the club]

A meeting will be held so that the co-ordinators and scheme members can discuss any issues. Also at this meeting all members will recieve a free information pack which explains what the new Neighbouhood watch scheme is all about and how it operates. After this the process is that an e-mail will be sent to the co-ordinator who will then pass this to other members via e-mail. DON`T PANIC if you do not have an e-mail account or access to a computer, there will be a paper copy of the release. The paper release of Neighbourhood watch will be issued to the co-ordinator via post and then delivered to the members addresses. I am sure that the co-ordinators would appreciate some help from their new scheme members!! After the initial set up of the scheme the co-ordinators will then be responsible for the collation of information and passing this to the relevant agencies. There will be a meeting every three months or so to discuss any issues with the police, councillors and other agencies and also an oppourtunity to introduce new members.

Newgate Fields: ‘a beautiful wooded picnic area’?

Bohemia born and bred Vic Chalcraft photographed in his beloved Newgate Fields

Local residents are campaigning to get Newgate Fields and Thorpe’s Wood restored to their former beauty and the path made safe for walkers. Vic Chalcraft of Aldborough Road, who is spearheading the campaign, remembers them as “a beautiful wooded picnic and play area, not the stinging-nettle covered area it is today.” He said, “We’ve been fighting for years to have it kept reasonable. We would like it mown 3-4 times per year as an area for people to picnic in, children to play, and people to go chestnutting. We have also asked for dog-bins.” TREES

“All the time Hastings Parks Department employed its own gardeners it was kept in good condition,” said Mr Chalcraft. “It was always mown regularly, and the path kept in good order. There were even horses grazing there in the 1970s. Then slowly they went back to mowing only four times a year and then less still until the situation got as bad as it is today. The majority of trees there now are self-sown since the 1970s. Until then, at the bottom by the steps where it’s now overgrown wood, was open ground. Only about four of the original trees are left: the Indian chestnut, a birch, a diseased

laburnum and a big fir tree. There was also a Canadian maple which was recently chopped down. Until 1987 there were several different paths through the wood. After the storm they became overgrown. I’m told they planted lots of trees there after the storm, but people pinched them.” PATHS

A major hurdle residents are having to overcome is getting the relevant authorities to agree which of them will pay for the upkeep of the area. Cllr Andrew Cartwright explained that Hastings Borough Council is responsible for parks and open spaces, but the path is a dedicated public right of way, and as such is the responsibility of East Sussex County Council. Mr Chalcraft said, “There’s about twenty yards of path at the Newgate Road end which has a camber where people slip. We want it levelled (but not made up). A lot of people use that path. They all express the same concern – that twenty yards of dangerous camber. Some people are now frightened to walk on it.” As the Voice photographer was at the site, a dog-walker slipped and fell over at that very spot. Several yards at the Newgate Road end were covered

History of Newgate Fields Before the first world war Newgate Fields were a dryAbout 1930-33 Alderman Thorpe gave the land to the ing area for washing, used by washerwomen who took people of Hastings and it was taken under the jurisdicin laundry. Then the area was turned into allotments for tion of Alexandra Park. In the late 1930s Park the soldiers returning from the 1914-18 war. A spring in the woods was used by the allotment magnolias, laburnums and flowering cherries, to turn it holders to water vegetables and was good enough to into a picnic and play area. with plastic mesh in 2007 but Mr Chalcraft explained that residents were not complaining about that part but the part further along. He and the passing dog-walker said the plastic mesh gets slippery when wet. Other problems are people living in adjoining houses dumping rubbish over their fences, which forces the path aside to avoid it, and badgers undermining the path.

Page 17

Old Bakery bric-a-brac

“At the end of last year we put in a petition with about forty names and as a result some work was done.” said Mr Chalcraft. “They mowed a path and used a bit of weedkiller, but nothing has been done since then, and now it’s as bad as it was before. A woodland needs to be managed, not just left neglected. Lots of the selfsown trees there are sycamores – weed trees. There was ragwort and Japanese knotweed. They sprayed some knotweed but there’s still some there. The bird-life has gone, though there’s still a few butterflies. There used to be all sorts of birds – cuckoos, bullfinches, owls and many others.” If the residents’ campaign succeeds, Newgate Fields could once again be a valuable “green lung”, providing leisure opportunities and enjoyment for local people. Mr Chalcraft is in no doubt about the incipient beauty just waiting to be restored. He pointed out the Indian chestnut, one of the four remaining original trees, to the Voice reporter, saying “You come along in the spring and look at that – it’s one of the most beautiful trees in Hastings.”

What they say ... Andrew Cartwright local councillor Andrew says “I am pressing the Council to include the cost of maintaining Newgate Fields in their budget for 2009-10 and subsequent years. Upkeep of Newgate Fields has been a victim of responsibility being split between the Borough and County Councils. However, following pressure from residents and councillors, Council officers have informed me that they have reached an “understanding” with the County Council that it will pay at least part of the cost of maintaining Newgate Fields.” Derek Ireland Hastings Borough Council Highways Manager, confirmed that the footpath is a public right of way on foot and that “the highway authority has a duty to ensure that the route is accessible to the public.” He added, “In terms of responsibility for the surrounding areas, I would assume that this would fall to the Council’s Parks and Open Spaces Manager.” Marian Hollingsworth Amenities Admin Officer for Parks and Open Spaces, confirmed that Newgate Wood is owned by Hastings Borough Council. She said, “It is classified as an Environmental Area. The area at the Amherst Road entrance is cut once a year in early September to a height of 75mm and cuttings left. The remainder of the site is cut twice a year, in April and August, to a height of 75 mm. The contractor is required to maintain the height of the grass as specified and not on a frequency basis. The footpaths are maintained as a one metre wide swathe.”

Susan Pottinger arranging external display at the Old Bakery

An interesting-looking shop at 132 London Road, near the junction with Tower Road West is The Old Bakery bric-a-brac shop (formerly Roseanna & Brian’s card shop). ‘It started this summer - or maybe it was Spring’, said stand-in manager Susan Pottinger (pictured). The shop is open only on Thurs, Fri and Saturdays. ‘Why it’s called ‘The Old Bakery’, I’ve no idea. We sell books, videos, furniture, bric-a-brac, children’s and adult’s clothes, electrical goods, white goods - in fact, if it’s saleable, we’ll stock it. We get a lot of mums who come in at school time with their children to buy children’s toys. We also get the odd dealer after bits of furniture’. The shop stock is a lot more extensive than at first sight appears. There’s a large warehouse, just above the premises, reached by a flight of wooden steps at the side of the shop, which has half a dozen rooms crammed with second-hand furniture, books, etc. The business is part of a cleaning and house clearing company, Angel Fish Cleaning, with offices in Hastings and Bexhill. o The Old Bakery 217300 & 07967 806103.

Clarence Road gated The long-awaited gate in Clarence Road is now installed (picture). It was exactly a year ago that A n d r e w Cartwright and Trevor Webb presented a petition to ESCC for the barrier to prevent use of the road for ‘illegal activities’.

David & Alma Hobbs’ exhibition at Empress Art An exhibition of recent work by David Hobbs and Alma Hobbs opens at the Empress Art Gallery, Tower Road, St. Leonards, on Monday 3rd. November and runs until 24th December 2008. David is an illustrator and specialises in hand-drawn line and water-colour maps, which have appeared in national magazines and publications. An exhibition such as this however, gives him the opportunity to show more personal work inspired by the local landscape, architecture and wildlife, which feature prominently in the works on show. Alma, having retired from teaching, now has the opportunity to take up painting again. The recent acquisition of larger studio space has also enabled her to explore and produce more varied work. She paints mainly in acrylics on canvas and her subject-matter includes cats, gardens and landscape. o All work is for sale and the gallery is open Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm and Sat 9am - 4pm. Empress Art, Tower Road, St.Leonards-on-Sea. Tel: 01424 442000.

They see us here and say, ‘Oh! When did you open?’ Costcutter takes over the old Lullabuys’ shop

A new supermarket opened in Bohemia in October. A Costcutter store has taken over the old Lullabuys premises at 68-70 Bohemia Road. There were plans two years ago to open the shop as the Bohemia Foodmarket, but the then owner, Masood Iqbal, decided not to go ahead due to strong local objection to him getting a premises licence to sell alcohol. Until recently the premises remained empty. Costcutter’s manager Mr A. Pathmanathan said that a lot of work had been done fitting the shop out, and that trade is building up.

Asked whether he had had any opposition to his application for a licence to sell alcohol, he said he had only had one objection. “We close at 10 pm so we’re not getting any trouble.” Mr Pathmanathan said that his policy for stocking the shop is very much customer led. “People come in and ask us if we could stock something, so we do. Michael Foster came in and suggested we stock a range of envelopes for customers, which we now have done.”

Mr Pathmanathan comes from Surrey, where he worked in a supermarket and then had his own vegetable business. He will now be moving down to live in “Five or six new customers come along every day. the flat above the shop in Bohemia Road. www.bohemiavillage.com
