Bohemia’s Phil beats ‘em all in Old Town bike race Keen cyclist Phil Dempsey of Bohemia Road has won the Hastings Festival Bike Race for the second year in a row in a record time of 14.72 seconds (writes Greg Lee). The charity race is a popular Old Town carnival week attraction and starts at the bottom of Crown Lane. The object is to cycle a large heavy butcher’s bike up the very steep hill while sitting on a reproduction of a ten shilling note. If the note is lost before reaching the finish the rider is disqualified. This year over 100 contestants including four previous champions attempted the steep hill climb. Phil made his winning run just as the competition came to a close and also managed to beat his previous winning time of 15.2 seconds. After a period working abroad in Taiwan, engineer Phil decided, three years ago, to relocate to Hastings due to work commitments, and divulged his winning formula was a pint (or two) of Guinness before the race. He is hoping to enter next year and is already in training – at the Crown public house!

HORNTYE PARK CRICKET – Horntye Park played host to Lashings World XI on Thursday 7th August, playing against Hastings Priory CC and Bexhill CC in the 7th 1066 Sporting Club Challenge. About 700 people watched some of the world’s greatest players. It was a victory for the Lashings team, and the results were as follows: Lashings vs Bexhill: Lashings win by 50 runs. Hastings vs Bexhill: Hastings win by 5 wickets. Hastings vs Lashings: Lashings win by 49 runs. West Indian cricketing legend Alvin Kallicharren, manager of Lashings, told the Voice, “It’s fantastic to be in Hastings on such a wonderful day. Twenty20 cricket is really going well. People aren’t bored; they’re really enjoying it.” Horntye’s Kevin Miller, added, “We had lovely weather, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. There was never a dull moment; it flowed from start to finish.” AGE CONCERN – announces a free service to those over 60 ‘who feel their voice is not being heard’. A trained volunteer advocate will visit in confidence, listen and explain the choices available. Call 01424 775721. BUDDIES – ‘Speedy Tomato Pizza’ opening soon at 87 Bohemia Road. Square ‘Chicago-style American pizzas’ are offered, along with doner kebabs, chicken kebabs, 1/2 pounders, chicken burgers, cod & chips and chicken & chips. Free delivery is offered. Tel: 203344. MIKE BAKER – local mathematics tutor Mike Baker’s logo (see right) is a clever collection of the letters of his surname. But do the symbols actually have any meaning? ‘Yes’, says Mike, ‘the formula represents an exponential series for biological growth and can for instance, be used to calculate the return on an investment of a certain sum of money each month; ‘e’ is a natural constant, found in many biological and other situations’. Ah, right, now we know. ST PETER’S CHURCH – the minibus which was reported stolen in our last issue, was recovered at 4am in Mount Pleasant Road. The driver’s seat had been set on fire which caused so much damage the vehicle has been written off by the insurers. Father Alex says ‘It’s a terrible shame, a big tragedy. Lack of funds means there are no plans to buy another bus’. Positive news is that the sandstone wall at the front of the church has been rebuilt – at a cost of £2,000, mostly paid by the insurers. ST MATTHEWS CHURCH – has recently relaunched its website to a very high standard. It has many attractive features, such as what’s on and when, maps, jokes, staff profiles, answers to important questions; and some recent sermons including one by Bishop Ken Barham and one by Edward Towner. Well worth a visit! Website: www.stmatts.co.uk DRIPPING SPRING – managers Joan & Robin are on the lookout for photos of old Bohemia. Having decorated the outside of the pub, they are busy on the inside and they think some pictures of old Bohemia will add that finishing touch.

Puzzle 63. This owl, one of a pair, won’t be flying anywhere – but where in Bohemia Road is it permanently ‘perched’? £10 token (kindly donated by Empress Art of Tower Road) for the winning entry. Closing date: 7th Sept. Our full address can be found on page 4.

Stapley’s Shoe Club Dear Sir, I’ve been trying to remember precisely where, in Bohemia Road, Stapley’s Shoe Shop was. I have clear memories from the period during WWII and just after, of going to Mr Stapley’s shop with my mother and two sisters. At the time we lived near The Ridge in Landsview Terrace, (between Grange Road and Hillside Road, then just a muddy track) and we used to walk over fields - to Old Road Road which had a locked gate across it, then along ‘Tingle’s Dingle’ (the wooded glen with the stream running under St Helen’s Road), and finally across Alexandra Park to reach the prime shopping centre of Bohemia! I also remember that my mother paid in regular amounts to Stapley’s Shoe Club, the sums being entered onto a savings card which she carried with her and presented each time she made a deposit. When there was enough on the card, she could buy one of us a pair of shoes. Savings Clubs were quite normal for those days. We also belonged to one run by Henson’s Stores at the Harrow, on The Ridge, small regular payments being made so that we could afford the luxury of a chicken (!) for Christmas.

Puzzle 62 answer. Last month’s puzzle picure showed the glass rooflight at Christchurch School in Woodland Vale Road. The winning entrant is Mr Tim Whitfield of Cornfield Terrace who has been sent a £10 gift voucher from Empress Art. Well done, Tim.

Voice for Ore Village? Dear Sir, I am involved in the Ore Valley Action group and the Speckled Wood group and I run a local lunch club. I have seen a copy of the Bohemia Village Voice, and I’d like to say how lovely it is. I think Ore Village would benefit greatly from such a publication, but I’m not sure how we would go about it. Could you give us some guidelines? Aubrey Ingleton, Ticehurst Close, Ore Village.

Gardeners’ Questions by Dave Kent Questions to ‘The Voice’: address p 4. Dave – I want to become famous and be on tv – how can I do this? Anita Harris (Mr). Dave writes: You could become proficient in one or more of the performing arts, or perhaps a popular sport. If you do not become famous, then you could shoot someone who has, give yourself up, and become the subject of news items and documentaries. You might also have programs made about you if you have a spectacular disease of the face or some sort of syndrome that causes you to shout obscenities in church or at members of minority groups. It is, of course, possible to become famous without doing anything notable; ask Tony Slattery, Gary Bushell or Chris Moyles for guidance.

Thanks for the kind words Aubrey. The ‘Voice’ is written and put together by volunteers, but we pay for printing, distribution and office overheads. Our only source of income is advertising which just about allows us to break even. The main thing is to start. You can get a lot of news onto a single sheet of A4. It’s important to get the first edition actually written and to run off some copies. You can ask local shopkeepers to put some on their counters (the shops in Bohemia have been incredibly supportive). Once you’ve published a few editions you can then try for some advertising. It’s great fun and a real service to the community. Good luck! - ed.

It’s payback time for offenders in YMCA makeover repainted the main hall and public gallery, stripped and varnished the floor, laid new carpet in and decorated the youth wing and revamped two activity rooms upstairs. Karen Manning, chief executive officer of Hastings and Rother YMCA, said: “Initially I was sceptical that they could carry out the work in the hall in such a short space of time but they pulled it off, and to a very high standard. It was so good we asked them back to do all the other rooms at the centre. As a charity there is no way we could have afforded professionals to carry out this work so this has been a great service to ourselves and our customers.”

The YMCA benefitting from the Community Payback scheme

A charity-run sports and leisure centre has been given a dazzling new makeover by offenders on probation. Up to 50 offenders spent almost 1,000 hours painting, laying carpet and clearing old furniture at the YMCA sports centre in St Paul’s Road, Bohemia. Under the Community Payback scheme, teams of offenders sentenced to unpaid work by the courts are used to improve local facilities. Over the course of two weeks offenders

Mark Burden, Sussex Probation Area’s Community Payback manager, said: “Some offenders worked 12 hour days, fuelled by food laid on by the YMCA, to get this project finished. The result is fantastic. As well as helping a very worthwhile charity this project has vastly improved a facility used by thousands of Hastings and St Leonards residents. Projects like this provide offenders with invaluable skills and teamwork experience which is proven to reduce reoffending.” Last year some 2,500 offenders were sentenced to carry out unpaid work under the supervision of Sussex Probation Area with more than 200,000 hours worked. Suggestions for Community Payback projects can be emailed to sussexcommunity.payback@sussex.probation.gsi.gov.uk

St. Peter’s Church will take a part in the ‘Diocese of Chichester’s Harvest Appeal 2008.’ This year we are supporting three projects in our link Dioceses in Guinea, Freetown (Sierra Leone) and Cameroon, enabling them to build for the future. This harvest, learn something new about the Church in West Africa. Please give generously to the appeal and pray for the people in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Cameroon. On the 28th of September at 10.00am we will celebrate the ‘Harvest Thanksgiving’ with very few examples of harvest produce. This is only but one of the projects Chichester Diocese is pioneering in West Africa. The villagers are desperate to complete the building but most of them are fishermen and farmers and they do not have the resources to do the job. An extract from the Bishop of Chichester’s letter :- “These are projects close to the heart of our link communities and by helping them in their work to build the Kingdom, in a very real way we are sharing.” So we must give generously to help these people who need our assistance. Turner’s ‘Fishmarket’ painting off on UK tour

Hastings Fishmarket on the Sands – one of our local museum’s prize works is off on a tour of the UK in September

“Hastings: Fishmarket on the Sands, Early Morning”, the watercolour by J M W Turner is leaving Bohemia at the end of September. It is off on loan as part of a national Turner touring exhibition. It will be visiting Nottingham Castle Museum and the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull, before returning to Hastings for display in the summer of 2009. This is your last chance to see it before it disappears on its travels.

Annabel’s art unveiled

The Museum acquired the painting, "Hastings: Fish Market on the Sands, Early Morning", in 2006 when it was sold at Sotheby's auction for £210,000. It is the largest of ten known watercolours of Hastings by JMW Turner. The 1824 painting shows an early morning market with the Sussex town and castle in the distance. It depicts fishermen and fishwives selling produce, joined by a group of fashionable women and a boy with a hoop. It also has two figures in Greek costume, said to be a reference to the Greek War of Independence which had support in Britain at the time. Hastings Museum already had a collection of Turner engravings, including sketches, objects and Annabel Tilley’s ‘Heritage 1’, on view in Kings Road, St Leonards furniture from the painter's house, but this was the London Road artist Annabel Tilley saw her work unveiled by museum's first Turner watercolour. n Hastings Museum & Art Gallery is located in Bohemia the mayor this summer in St Leonards. Communal bins coming to Bohemia? Are communal bins coming to Bohemia? Local councillor Andrew Cartwright says “The Council will shortly be writing to all residents of Bohemia regarding the possible introduction of communal bins and more wheelie bins. The proposals are only tentative at this stage. The Council has promised to consult with residents and undertake a property survey. Current thinking is that a mixture of wheelie bins (twin bins) and large communal bins might be appropriate for Bohemia depending upon the circumstances of each street. Although the Council’s approach is much more professional than their previous attempt to introduce wheelie bins – in 2007 – some mistakes are still being made. Please let me know your concerns. My belief is that, all things considered, this second attempt is likely to prove much more successful than the first. It should lead to cleaner streets and increased recycling without causing unnecessary inconvenience to residents. As always, I will be willing to assist residents with their concerns and take action on their behalf where appropriate”. In August Andrew visited Brighton to see their onstreet communal bins, where they are used only for refuse - not recyclables. “Hastings Borough Council is considering using them for both refuse and recyclables”, says Andrew. “Most of the bins there are oper-

ated by foot pedal only - which I felt might cause some residents to overbalance, however, a new model with a handle is being trialled”.

Maggots in your dustbin? ‘No problem’ says Ian Bloe of Sussex bin cleaning service IB Clean & Tidy. Ian will wash and deodorise your bins on a regular basis, leaving them ‘maggot free and hygenically fresh’. Visits are scheduled for the day your bin is emptied.

‘Thanks, but no thanks’ seems to be the attitude of St Peter’s Road residents to the councils twinbin scheme. Colin Fox and Bill Third are busy collecting signatures for a petition against the p r o p o s e d Colin Foxand & Bill Third ‘No wheelie bins’ plans. ‘Last year we were promised consultation with a Field Officer, but no-one from HBC came to see us’, says Colin. ‘Currently, we simply leave our rubbish for collection in Cornfield Terrace at the rear of our garden, where the bins are stored. It will be madness having to drag them up the back steps, through the house (more steps) and then down the front steps’, he continued. Bill Third said ‘When Vivienne Bond was our local councillor she fought hard to keep the bins away. I just hope Andrew Cartwright will be as effective’.

Letter triggers recall of nightmare ordeal

Dorothy Wood being interviewed by Paul Siegert of BBC South East Today. Camerman is Dave Painter. [Photo: Bill Third]

By Bill Third A letter from the Sussex branch of the National Probation Service brought back terrifying memories to an 80 year old shopkeeper of an attempted robbery six years ago in which she was dowsed in petrol by her attacker who threatened to set her alight if she did not open the till. The attacker Duncan Snape is due for release in September having served two thirds of his total 10 year prison sentence. Although he will be required to stay out of an exclusion zone, roughly from the needle point at the conjoining of Bohemia and London Roads to Chapel Park Road, the lady who was attacked, Dorothy Wood of Wood’s newsagents Bohemia Road, feels that the exclusion zone will allow Snape to get quite close to her. “He is excluded from Newgate Road, but he could practically wave to me from the end of Amherst Road if he chose to,” she says. Recalling the build-up to the ordeal that brought her close to death, Dorothy said,”He came into the shop early one morning in November 2001, just looked around and then left. Then he came in the next morning and I asked if I could help him. He said ‘no I’m only looking around.’ Then he came back on the morning of November 6th. carrying a petrol can. I repeated my question of the day before.” He replied “Get back behind the counter woman,” and bowled me over. He then poured the petrol over me and

produced a lighter, “Open the till or I’ll set you on fire,” he said. I refused, then a car door slammed loudly right outside the shop which gave him a fright and fortunately for me he ran off, although he did manage to snatch about £100”. The lady who slammed the car door saw Snape making his escape up Newgate Road where he attempted to get into a car, and phoned the police on her mobile. Fortunately there was a patrol car nearby and he was arrested in Aldborough Road with the petrol can under his arm. When Dorothy received the letter from the Probation Service in Shepherd Street, her first reaction was to say to her son Keith, “Right, that’s it. We are shutting up shop.” But despite a few sleepless nights she decided she wasn’t going to be frightened off, displaying the same tenacity and bulldog spirit which she has shown after attempted robberies in the past. But questions remain: will pictures of Snape be posted in the exclusion zone, so that he can be identified if he does come into the area? And can it be extended to help Mrs Wood sleep a little easier in her bed at nights? According to the probation service, it would be hard to get permission to use Snape’s picture – presumably to protect his privacy! And in any case there were so many people on exclusion orders that there would be posters all over the place. However, they would look into extending the exclusion zone so that Snape would not have sight of the shop.

Dorothy Wood -– from p 12)

Bill Third, who along with his wife Anna, delivers papers for Dorothy at the weekend, was so concerned about the situation that he dashed off the above press release which was picked up by the BBC and on Thursday August 14th, BBC South East Today’s reporter Paul Siegert and cameraman Dave Painter came along to Woods’ Newsagents on Bohemia Road and interviewed Dorothy for their evening programme. This attracted a lot of attention and the good news is that the proposed exclusion zone has now been extended to cover a much larger area – see map, right. Representatives from Sussex probation Victim Contact scheme called to see Mrs Wood to discuss this with her. It is stressed that the exclusion zone is only a proposal which will need confirmation.

Horntye Park ‘delighted’ with auction results Kevin Miller, manager of Horntye Park Sports Complex said he was “delighted” with July’s cricket memorabilia auction results. “We made considerably more than we’d been hoping for. It will give us working capital until the land deal goes through”. Before the sale, Kevin said he’d be pleased with £30,000. It is believed that the total sum raised was about £63,000, so he should be very pleased. This collection of cricket books, photographs and other ephemera was sold on behalf of the Horntye Park Sports Club and the majority of the items originated from the old Hastings Cricket Ground at Priory Meadow. The auction was conducted by Knights Sporting Auctions at Leicester on Saturday July 19th A total of 190 lots of Horntye Park’s cricket memorabilia went under the hammer in July. The one above , (lot 5), an 1886 handbill, fetched £1,200.

Some lots produced pleasant surprises, for example, an origiwww.bohemiavillage.com

nal 1895 sepia photograph of W G Grace in batting pose and signed in black ink by Grace, fetched £2000 (the auctioneer's estimate had been £500 to £800). Another excellent result was for an original official scorebook for the 1880-1881 seasons which fetched £2,100 (auctioneer's estimate: no more than £250). An early handbill for an 1886 match between Hastings & St Leonards Cricket Club v The Parsees (Bombay, India) was knocked down for £1,200 (estimate £250-£350). This interesting item listed the names of the two teams and at the bottom, it reads 'Admission 6d, Carriages 2s. 6d, Bath Chairs 1s'. Not all lots found buyers however – for instance, a black and white photograph of the Hastings team which played Barclays Bank in 1937, estimated to fetch at least £40, remained unsold.

Bohemia Lighting praise for ‘lovely customers’ after as well! The boys used to go to St. Paul’s School. Now they are 37 and 35!” In 1991, Maurice started Security First, and ran this from no. 65. In 2006 the Dunfords decided to sell no. 65 and run both businesses from no. 71. 65 is now occupied by Cheap and Cheerful. These days Maurice concentrates on the security side, while Annette runs the shop. She said, “It’s more difficult now than it was when we started, because of parking and the internet. It’s going to be even harder for us if another supermarket comes to Silverhill.” She continued, I like meeting people, and we have some lovely customers who stop for a chat. I’d miss that if I didn’t run the shop. It’s a personal service. We try to give a friendly face.” Annette key-cutting at Bohemia Lighting

Maurice and Annette Dunford have been running Bohemia Lighting Centre at 71 Bohemia Road for thirtyfive years. Maurice was working as an electrician at the time, and the couple decided it would be a good idea to buy the premises as a base. Initially they bought both no. 71 and no. 65, both formerly Roger’s Haberdashery, as empty shops. “It was a challenge working in the shop when we first started,” said Annette, “as I had two small boys to look

At Easter 2007 the couple had to cope with a flood, when they arrived one morning to find water all over the floor. It was coming from a cracked sewage pipe in Newgate Road. After the pipe was repaired, the shop had to be substantially refurbished and everything contaminated had to be removed. Even the walls were replastered, and new counters put in, as well as a new carpet laid. But after all the remedial work and the extensive damage that had been done, it was back to business as usual. Maurice and Annette are obviously survivors!

Under 5s playgroup loses its kind, caring Helen Helen Dempsey, supervisor at the Park Road Under Fives Playgroup, retired on 23rd July after 18 years service. Helen, of Clarence Road, was trained to teach children, but never actually worked as a teacher because when she moved Helen – a ‘great boss and friend’ down from southeast London to Hastings in 1971, there were no teaching jobs available locally. She started work at Park Road playgroup in 1990, but had already been associated with it for some years, as her own children went there. “My daughter was one of the first group when it initially opened in March 1986, so I’ve been part of the playgroup as a parent, then as an ordinary session worker, then as deputy supervisor, and finally as supervisor.” Helen’s friend and colleague Sally Crockford, who has worked under her for five years, said, “Helen is a really kind, caring, considerate person, a great boss and an

even greater friend. She’s given a lot to children round this area.” At Helen’s last session with the playgroup, she received gifts from the committee, the staff, and the parents. Asked about her favourite memories, Helen said, “What stand out are the annual visits, because the children enjoy them so much. Every year we go to places like the Seven Sisters Sheep Farm, the Rare Breeds Centre near Ashford, Drusilla’s Zoo or the Sea Life Centre. We’ve also taken the children to visit the Fire Station. There’s also the Christmas parties and the summer parties, with a magician.” Looking back, Helen speaks of the changes since the playgroup’s early days. “There are about 45 children there now. There used to be over 90 at one time, but there are now lots more private nurseries. We at Park Road are a non-profit-making organisation, a real community group. We offer a service for people who can’t afford a private nursery. When we first started, we didn’t have OFSTED. Now we’re ofsteded and have to follow the early years system. It’s much more professional: we all have training courses, and there are more qualified staff. It’s much more hard work, but I think it’s a better level of care. The parents have higher expectations.” Helen will be continuing in her duties as a lollipop lady at St Paul’s School. “I’ll see quite a few of the little children, because some are going to St. Paul’s in September of course, so I’ll still keep in touch.”

Clifford the baker & Sue selling & repairing cars Clifford and Sue Pearce took over the former Bohemia Motors garage in Upper Park Road on 4th August. The couple have decided to make a clean sweep by giving the business a new name, “Clifford’s Automobiles”. Immediately they got the keys, they set about redecorating and getting staff. They already have a mechanic, and are now getting one or two apprentice mechanics. Initially they had intended to spend a week or two getting everything prepared, but, said Sue, speaking three days after they took over, “It’s all taking off already. We wanted to get it all set for the opening, but people who have just walked past have asked if we can do things” As she spoke, a customer was having his MOT done on his vehicle and several other cars were awaiting attention. She said that a lot of passers-by had made encouraging comments when they saw new developments going on, and “the people from Hillcrest Garage have come down and wished us well.” At present, Clifford is continuing to commute to his present job as a baker at the family business in Bookham, Surrey. He is planning to give that up and run the garage when business has built up. “I’ve been in business since I was twenty-four, and I’m now sixty-six, so business isn’t new to me,” he said. “I used to sell cars in North Road, but I closed down because the Council wouldn’t give me planning permis-

Name change for pub?

New hair salon opens

Jason Burgess, has been the new manager at the Wheatsheaf public house in Bohemia Road, for only a few weeks, but already wants to change the oldest pub in Bohemia’s name. “I want it be a Bohemia Village family-style pub and I’d like to see the ‘Bohemian Arms’ as its new name. I believe there used to be a pub by that name on the corner of Tower Road and Bohemia Jason – wants name change Road. Most of my customers think it’s a great idea”. Jason, (38), with twenty years experience of the licensed trade, has previously worked at the North Star and has been a licensee at the Duke in Silverhill. Bands will continue on Friday evenings. “We have two real ales always on tap and on Sundays we provide free food”, says Jason. Football, shown on large screens, will continue, with ‘free food at half-time’. Although Jason sees the Wheatsheaf essentially as a family pub, he hasn’t ruled out the occasional strippers nights, started by his predecessor, Emma, who has returned to her studies. o The owner of the Wheatsheaf also owns and runs the ‘Kings Head’ pub in Battle.

New hair s a l o n ‘Eclipse’, at 73 Bohemia Road, is due to open for business on Monday 1st September. Manager Rachael Martin, and L i s a Castleman, are holding a New salon – set to eclipse the competition? “Meet and Greet Day” on Saturday August 30th, with refreshments and the opportunity to meet the stylists, family and friends. The inside of the salon, formerly Waves, has been totally refurbished. Everything has now been completed, apart from the new windows. It was intended to replace the existing timber front door and bay window with pvc units, but Adrian Martin, Rachael’s father, said “Planning permission has been refused, on grounds of the thickness of the pvc, so the shop-front is being repainted for the present, and we must re-submit for planning permission.”

Warning: this is what a black henna tattoo can do Parent Vanessa Gent, of St Peter’s Road writes: One of my sons decided to try a temporary henna tattoo, which was advertised as being perfectly safe and allergy-free. He came home with a black Chinese pictogram of the word “gamble” on the side of his neck. I do not like tattoos but thought there would be no repercussions from something which would quickly fade. A couple of weeks later, my son said he was having problems with the tattoo - an allergic reaction resulting in intense itching and soreness. By the next day he was feeling feverish and had developed huge pus-filled blisters on the site of the tattoo and all round the area, plus a generalised rash around his face, eyes and trunk. He went straight to A & E, and after being prescribed covering antibiotics he was told to see his own doctor, at Warrior Square, immediately. He prescribed further antibiotics and antihistamines and after a few days the itching is starting to subside and the blisters have discharged their poison; at their worst it required 11 different dressings overnight to contain the fluid.

Slimming success inspires Marie to start own class Clarence Road and now in Aldborough Road. As a child she attended St Paul’s School, and later worked in Alldays. “I love Bohemia, “ she says, “ It’s just my home. I’d never live anywhere else.” Marie knows what it’s like to make the effort to lose weight, and that’s what prompted her to help others. At her biggest she was 18 stone and size 22 in clothes. She managed to get her weight down to 16 stone, then joined a Rosemary Conley class in January 2006, reducing her weight to 12 stone and size 12/14. Her ultimate aim for herself is 11 stone. She confesses to having felt very nervous when she first went along to the Rosemary Conley class herself. When she discovered that the instructors had been in the same boat themselves, she felt much more at ease. “It was a great help, “ she said. “That’s what I want to do myself. Being such a local girl, lots of people know me and have seen me lose weight. If they come along to the class, they’ll know that I understand.” Last October, when her baby girl was four months old, Marie enrolled on a YMCA Fitness Industry training course, passing the necessary exams to become an instructor in July. She is now a YMCA Fit Qualified Aerobic Instructor and an Exercise to Music Studio Instructor. As we go to press, (August), she is about to go up to Leicester to do further training with Rosemary Conley in person.

Rush to get ‘Fabulous Bohemia’ T-shirts to Fayre Will ‘Fabulous Bohemia’ Tshirts be available at this year’s Bohemia Village Fayre? ‘Yes’, says designer Chris Steele of iDLEHANDS, a new company based in St Leonards. ‘Although we have been extremely busy, we are quietly confident that we’ll have plently of ‘Fabulous Bohemia’ T-shirts on sale at the Village Fayre.

Chris models his ‘Fabulous Bohemia’ design. Chris: “St Leonards is a very cool place to be”.

Chris has worked as a fashion designer in London for such companies as Voyage, Unconditional and Billionaire but feels the time is right to strike out on his own. He says “I’ve always been inspired by the unique vibe of Hastings and St Leonards – this is a very cool place to be. We’ve shown at the St. Leonards festival and the Old Town street party and it’s wonderful to get such a great response from locals

and visitors alike. We are really looking forward to showing at the Bohemia Village Fayre”. iDLEHANDS sells T-shirts and bags with prints that are inspired by vintage advertising and oldfashioned branding. Print runs will be experimental and kept to a minimum. The T-shirts and tops are 100% cotton and come in a range of prints and colours so there will be plenty to choose from. They also sell a range of accessories including bags, caps and cards featuring the same prints and slogans. infrastructure are limited. Funding decisions have reduced standards and improvements to the network are slow. ... The rate of deterioration of the road network exceeds the maintenance investment of the Council by £1 million per year. The Council estimates the current gap to be about £5 million had funding kept pace with inflation ... Overall the transport system is not providing an effective network”. Indeed, many of the fairly routine works on the roads and pavements currently in progress in St Leonards are being paid for mainly by the Government as part of the regeneration of the local economy.

Letters (from p 5)

Hastings Borough Council acts only as agent to the local Highways Authority. Unfortunately, the Highways Department at the Borough Council has very limited resources and it is clear that they are understaffed. My belief is that most local residents would prefer our local roads and pavements to be managed by Hastings Borough Council. East Sussex County Council is too remote to be sensitive to public opinion. I have written to the Director of Environmental Services at the Borough Council urging him to raise the issue of the need for more staff in the Highways Department at both Borough and County levels. However, my understanding is that the County Council is reluctant to give further control or funding to the Borough. At present I am working with several groups of local residents to improve our roads. Local residents and traders from the Bohemia Area Association are very active, and there are new groups of active residents in Tower Road West and Alexandra Road - both campaigning for better highways management. New groups are likely to be formed soon in Dane Road, Church Road and elsewhere. Please get in touch if you would like to be part of a campaign. Although it can take years to bring about real change it is well worth the effort of persevering. Ultimately, the whole community will benefit from improved road safety. Summerfiels’ Sports Centre]. As for the Oval, if the writer had done their homework, they would have discovered that the Oval was opened and given to the children of the Borough by the then Prince of Wales in the early 1920s. If they really want a usable green area, well, in the Bohemia area why don’t they support those residents fighting to get Newgate Field – if they know where it is – back to its former glory, a beautiful wooded picnic and play area, not the stinging nettle-covered area it is today. If I remember rightly in an earlier issue of the Voice, Mr Humphries [Voice editor] said something about campaigning for this. Vic Chalcraft, Aldborough Road. The ESCC website states “If your community has an area that is used for sport or other pastimes, then registering it as a village green may ensure that it stays that way. A ‘village green’ is legally defined as any area where people in the community have enjoyed legitimate sports or pastimes for a number of years. Such activities include things like cricket matches, blackberry picking, dog walking and fetes”. We will be doing a piece on Newgate Fields before the end of this year – that’s a promise – ed.

Burn down all their houses? Dear Sir, I refer to the letter from ‘St Peter’s Road residents’ about dog mess [issue 61, July 2008]. Yes, we do have a dog excrement problem, sadly caused by a minority of uncouth dog owners, who really should not be allowed to keep dogs. As for the morons who suggest burning down the houses of those who allow their dogs to foul the pavements, would their efforts not be put to better use burning down the houses of people who continually cycle on our pavements, without consideration for elderly people or young people, burning down the houses of people who openly deal lethal drugs in our area, burning down the houses of people who smash bottles in the streets and those that put the wrong kind of rubbish in their bins? Leave respectable dog owners alone and start to address the real problems. Bohemia resident (name & address supplied)

Dear Sir, I note in your last issue the date given for the demolition of Wingfield’s Tower in Lower South Road is 1974. I enclose a photocopy of a press cutting of an article, ‘Tower is to topple’, from the Hastings & St Leonards Observer of 17th March 1973 which clearly shows the tower enveloped in scaffold and ready for demolition. I therefore think the correct year is 1973.

Village Green Dear Sir, what’s all this rubbish about a village green? [issue 62, August 2008, letter from Kat Lee-Ryan, organiser of Bohemia Village Fayre] To have a village green, you must have a village, not a figment of someone’s imagination, although I sympathise and support their view of no building on the area [green just north of
