Opposition to Silverhill

‘Say No to Asda in Silverhill’ – Gaby Hill speaking at a well-attended meeting in St Matthew’s church hall. Stuart Hill, seated left.

About a hundred people filled St Matthew’s Church Hall on 9th June for a public meeting and information evening, “Say No to Asda in Silverhill”. The meeting was organised by Gaby and Stuart Hill, assisted by Caroline Robertson. Conservative Councillor for Silverhill, Matthew J. Lock, spoke briefly at the meeting, urging concerned local residents to go to the relevant planning meeting at the Town Hall, sign the petition, and write letters. At time of printing, the planning office were unable to say at what date the Asda store would be on their meeting agenda. As well as informing the audience of Asda’s plans, the presentation covered traffic impact, health and environment, land use, the Hastings local plan, and how to object.

Describing the proposed plans, Gaby Hill told the audience, “the footprint of the building is now larger than it was. They’ve increased their floor-space since their public consultation of last year. They have put in a pharmacy, which they previously said they wouldn’t. This will be in direct competition with Lloyds in Silverhill and Blooms in Bohemia Road ” Stuart Hill said that there will now be a mezzanine floor with a café, a retail area, and room to expand the retail area, whereas previously this was only going to be offices for the staff. Gaby told the audience, “Ponswood was not supposed to have retail development on it, but the government expired this a few months ago.” Stuart pointed out “Asda says that the site is

Editorial Will Asda get its new store at Silverhill? Maybe the world’s biggest retailer will be thwarted, if the growing band of protesters gets its way (p. 1, 8 & 9). It’s a pleasure to report a wonderful response to Mel Fisher’s appeal last month for balls of wool (p. 17). Local bakers, Little Mill, have walked off with no less than nine prizes at a Master Bakers’ competition (p. 6). Did you know there’s a Bohemia in New York? (p. 15). The delayed report on St Peter’s Road is on pp. 12 & 13, and if it’s naked ladies you like, see page 11.

Japanese Prints – The art of Kabuki – 21st June – 5th October 2008 This large-scale exhibition highlights Hastings Museum & Art Gallery’s collection of stunning Japanese prints. Those on display date from the early 19th century and were originally collected by Lord and Lady Brassey in the 1870’s. They are predominantly known as ‘actor’ prints: with strong connections to the flamboyant Japanese theatrical tradition of ‘Kabuki’. Many of the works on display represent the characteristic exuberance of this stylised form, with highly decorated and elaborate costumes, and exaggerated make-up for dramatic effect. The majority of the themes represent historic events and stories, and/or comic portrayals of ordinary life. Artists from the collection include Kunisada, Kuniyoshi, Yoshitsuya and Sadahide. A rare chance to see these unique wood-block prints on display for the first time in over ten years. A full-colour catalogue will accompany the exhibition, on sale at the museum.

September Village Fayre Bohemia des res The Village Fayre has moved – to Sunday Sept 7th. Organiser Kat explains, ‘We have been asked to play the Beautiful Days festival, and really want to go, and it falls on the 17th August so we are moving the fayre. All stallholders who have expressed an interest will be contacted to let them know and everything else will proceed as normal. It’s likely that we will keep the Village fayre on this date in future, as it worked well for the Green Fair when we did that’. Organiser Kat at last year’s fayre

Bohemia in five wards! In which Hastings ward does Bohemia lie? While it’s undoubtedly true that most of Bohemia is in Gensing ward, there are parts of our area which creep into four other wards. For instance, the Indoor Bowls Centre and the Oval in Bohemia Road are actually part of Central St Leonards. Summerfield Sports Centre, the Museum, the Falaise Hall and White Rock Gardens, all in Bohemia Road, are included in Castle Ward. Even St Paul’s School, Amherst Gardens and part of Newgate Road are not considered part of Bohemia - they belong to Braybrooke Ward, along with the Swannery in Alexandra Park, Shornden Reservoir and Shornden Wood. Surely Clarence Road is in Bohemia? Partly yes, but the northern end is in Silverhill ward as is all of Springfield Road, St Matthews Road, Drive, Church and Gardens. So, which councillors should Bohemians turn to for advice and help? For Gensing ward it is Andrew Cartwright (Lab, 781066) and Kim Forward (Lab, 717390). For Braybrooke ward it is Godfrey Daniel (Lab, 781082) or Dominic Sabetian (Lab, 781022). For Castle ward it’s Peter Armstong (Lib Dem, 430634) or Paul Barlow (Lab, 424678). In Central St Leonards the councillors are Jeremy Birch, (Lab, 781083) and Trevor Webb, (Lab, 781099). Finally, for Silverhill ward, it is Stephen Springthorpe (Indep, 852679) or Matthew J Lock (Con).

Five bedroomed house with pool in Bohemia Road

This pleasant Bohemia Road 5-bedroomed singlestorey 1974 family home standing in 1¼ acres boasts 3 bathrooms, a 2-car garage, a ‘horse property’, swimming pool, and fenced yard. And it is in Bohemia Road – in Bohemia, Long Island, New York, that is. The asking price is $625,000 (about £320,000), and the owners are ‘willing to negotiate’. Among its other attractions are central air conditioning, alarm, carpeted and wood floors and patio. The house is described as being: “Very nice for a family. It is set back for privacy as well as being equipped with a circle drive. The three bathrooms are newly renovated as well as new windows throughout. Property has a large in ground pool and there is also a horse property. There is a nice dog yard set up on the side of the house. There is a basement apartment mother daughter set-up. It is located on 1.25 acres with only approx. half developed”. If you’re thinking of moving to New York perhaps you might contact Deborah Hopkins on (516) 546-3700.

Cricket match off Even good old English spirit had to bow to the bad weather on Bank Holiday Monday May 26th. After a sunny Saturday and Sunday, the inhabitants of Hastings awoke to a wet, blustery Bank Holiday Monday to find over an inch of rain had fallen in the night. The wind was force seven. The tension was on at Horntye Park, where Sussex CCC was due to play Essex CCC in the first county game in Hastings for seven years. Despite covers on the wicket and grass, and initial hopes that play might yet be possible, the long-awaited county match was finally called off at 2 pm by the umpires, who have the final word. Kevin Miller, general manager at Horntye, said “I felt very disappointed for the public and for the staff. A lot of people came and were huddled up under their coats. Staff have been grooming it for weeks. But that’s the game, isn’t it – weather depending.” Next county match at Horntye is on Thurs 10th July: Sussex CCC 2nd XI vs Kent CCC 2nd XI.

CHEAP & CHEERFUL – announces that it now accepts ‘Healthy Start’ vouchers. Eclipse hairdressers: Lisa (left) & Rachael

A new hairdressers’ will shortly be opening at 73 Bohemia Road in the former Waves premises – it will be named ‘Eclipse’. A full refurbishment is going on at the salon, where Rachael Martin and Lisa Castleman will be welcoming customers old and new in September. Manager Rachael, 19, studied hairdressing at Hastings College, and achieved NVQ levels 2 & 3. At level 3 she started working as a mobile hairdresser. She told the Voice, “I’d rather work for myself than someone else. The opportunity arose with the shop when Waves closed.” Lisa also has NVQ 2 & 3 in hairdressing, and won a 365 award for a salon she worked for previously. She has been doing hairdressing for thirteen years, and worked for Toni & Guy in Bedfordshire before moving down to Hastings three years ago. Since then she too has been a mobile hairdresser. Rachael wants to attract the former Waves customers back, who are mostly older ladies, but is also bringing the salon up to date to attract new and younger customers.

Gardeners’ Questions

Q. Dave – I don’t like my neighbour’s cat – what can I do? Anita Harris (Mr)

ACQUISITIVE CRIME – the Voice has been asked by Sussex Police to help distribute some of these ‘Surecode’ permanent UV security marker pens. We have 20 and they will be given free of charge to the first people to ask for them. CUBA – Cuba’s Bohemia magazine is 100 years old. This literary, social, and artistic publication first came out in May 1908. With a current circulation of 100,000 it was dubbed by Fidel Castro as ‘the mainstay of national identity’. Its name derives from it’s owner Miguel Perez’s passion for Puccini’s La Bohème. Readers have been invited to take part in the contest “Bohemia in my Life”, for children and adults from any country. http://www.cubaheadlines.com CONCORDIA HALL – full kitchen & large garden, available to hire for weddings & events/weekly groups, Smaller conference/class room also available on upper floor, very good rates, please telephone Sonia for details or to book on 07964 065474 TOWER ROAD – the ‘build-out’ was completed in May, on schedule and without much disruption. The effect is to constrict the road at its junction with St Peter’s Road and this makes for a safer school crossing (see pic).

Dave writes: Is this a domestic animal, cat o' nine tails, catamaran or catalytic converter? A domestic cat can be kept at bay by digging a pond that takes up every square inch of your back garden and another in the front if necessary. This may also deter a neighbour who wants to give you damned good whipping. If, however, you mean CAT as in Canine Agility Team, then the ponds will only make your life worse as you will probably end up with a pack of poodles water skiing in formation past your lounge window. If you have developed a pathological loathing of catamarans or catalytic converters, then you've probably had a brain haemorrhage (see June issue). Little Mill’s Sarah Roberts with Michael Hitchings

Little Mill Bakery’s Sarah Roberts won second prize for her three-strand plait of bread at the Kent Master Bakers’ Annual Bread and Confectionary Competitions. “I’m shocked! I can’t believe it!” said Sarah, 25, who has only been at Little Mill for six weeks. “I’m extremely chuffed and happy.” Michael and Claire Hitchings, who own Little Mill, are regular prizewinners at the prestigious competitions. This year’s event was held at Ashford International Hotel on 7th June. Sarah said, “When I first started, Michael told me about all the competitions and said that depending on how quickly I picked things up I could enter. Then he said I should go for it.” Before coming to Little Mill, Sarah worked as a chef for eight years at the White Hart in Guestling. “I had a couple of friends who did baking and they said it’s a fantastic job. So I did my research, got a list of local bakers, picked one at random and rang up. Initially I was only asking Michael for information, but he said there was a vacancy.” “I love it,” she says. “ It’s absolutely fantastic! I love the fact that you’re making something by hand, and bread is so very important. The whole world has different types of bread. And it’s a great smell!” Asked if she will enter next year, Sarah said, “Definitely! I’ll be aiming for a first! It was a great opportunity for me to learn about all the different breads and what the other bakers are doing. I’m getting as much out of it as I can and learning as many skills as I can in the baking trade. Employer Michael Hitchings said, “Sarah already has the technical skill. I’ll try to get her onto an NVQ course so she can get some qualifications behind it as well”. All in all, Little Mill won nine prizes, including 1st prize for sultana scones, second prizes for their white open top standard tin loaf, their white round crusty rolls, and Sarah’s three strand plait..

Local author Robert Tressell’s classic play The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists was serialised on Radio 4 last month. Over three Sunday afternoon broadcasts, comedian Johnny Vegas (pictured) co-produced and led an all-star cast including Timothy Spall, Andrew Lincoln, Paul Whitehouse, Bill Bailey and Philip Jackson. There was even a cameo appearance by John Prescott MP, who appears as an ‘understanding policeman’. Originally published in 1914, Robert Tressell’s novel is often cited as one of the most important Socialist texts in the English language. It follows a group of builders, painters and decorators renovating a house in the early 1900s. Exploited and existing just above the poverty line, their only fall-backs are charity, the dreaded workhouse, or the grave. ‘This dramatisation intertwines politics and humour with the stories of wives and families battling to survive. Socialist visionary Frank Owen attempts to rouse the workers from their apathy, challenging their political views and questioning why wages bear no relation to the value of work when the rich are getting richer without lifting a finger. Crass, the wily foreman, bridges the gulf between master and worker with self-preservation his priority. Easton, a worker attempting to secure his job by keeping Crass’s glass filled with ale, neglects his wife, Ruth, with shocking effects. [BBC].

Facelift for the ‘Drip’ The Dripping Spring public house in Tower Road is getting a makeover: a complete external decoration, including all new fixed and swinging signs and new outside lighting. Work will take a couple of months ‘But, in the meantime, we’re open for business as usual’, say managers Robin & Joan.

semi-derelict, even though there is manufacturing going on there. It’s only semi-derelict because Asda paid Marshall Tufflex off.” Gaby said, “Asda claiming they are helping secure the future of Marshall Tufflex and its employees is a red herring.” Stuart continued, “Actually Marshall Tufflex are very rich. They own lots of land in Hastings, so they don’t need this money.” Cllr Matthew J. Lock told the Voice, “There was another offer for the Marshall Tufflex land before Asda, but Asda offered more.” After the presentation the floor was thrown open for audience discussion. Residents were concerned primarily about the detrimental effect on parking space in nearby roads and increased traffic. The second greatest area of concern was the damaging effect on local shops

at Silverhill. Other worries included the potential for antisocial behaviour which would be encouraged by benches on the open space outside, and the concomitant decline of Silverhill as a community centre. Increased pollution was also a concern, both air pollution, noise pollution from increased traffic, and light pollution from the site. Several members of the audience raised the point that a sizeable plot of land is to be given to a Battle Road resident who has spoken in favour of Asda. In answer to a comment from the floor that “Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s are out of town. So should Asda be” Gaby replied, “The government now say supermarkets should be in town centres to dissuade people from using their cars.” Stuart added, “i.e. this plan has government backing.” More details at http://silverhill.lefora.com

ASDA presents new plans in charm offensive Asda held a public consultation day at the Red Cross Hall in Newgate Road on 29th May to present the final plans for their controversial new store. Members of the development team were on hand to answer questions from the public.

Mr Harle. He explained, “It will probably be 8am to 10pm, with extra opening hours at Christmas.” Asda claims their proposed new store “will help increase business for local retailers.” They say, “A survey has shown that 73% of people in the catchment area never shop at Silverhill.”

The supermarket chain submitted their planning application on 9th May for Asked about the impact on the proposed Silverhill residents whose properties store and medical facility back on to the site or are on the Marshall Tufflex site close by, Barney Harle said at Ponswood. The public Asda pride themselves on have until 27th June to Tall men in suits put the Asda case at Newgate Road meeting their environmental policy register comments with Hastings planning dept. and that there will be “reduced lighting, using cut-off Barney Harle, Development Surveyor for the project, designs which focus light downwards”. Asda say the explained, “ Asda have already bought the entire site, new store will create “over 300 full and part-time jobs.” so that Marshall Tufflex are now their tenants. There will be six months work of demolition and decontamination – because there is asbestos on the site. He continued, “All the dairymen’s houses, the old dairy, and the Mayor’s garage are going to be knocked down. Asda has got agreements to purchase the houses in Battle Road, but the Mayor wants to hang on to her garage. We’re in negotiations with the council about it. After all, the Mayor won’t last for ever, will she?” He went on, “Battle Road up to just past the dairy is to be widened, and a new junction is going to be put there. The present bus stops are to be moved further up Battle Road.” Mike Cottee from Cottee Transport Planning, the consultants to Asda dealing with transport issues, said, “Over twenty buses an hour pass Silverhill junction. A very strong point for this site is its sustainable location.” Asda say that “by buying the Ponswood site we have invested a significant amount of money in Marshall Tufflex to support and expand its business and help secure the future of the company and more than 250 local employees. Marshall Tufflex are making a planning application to build a new warehouse close to their Churchfield headquarters and the Ponswood activities will be transferred up there.” Mr Harle said, “The Asda store will be 35,000 sq ft, which is a little smaller than Morrisons in Queen’s Road, a bit smaller than the average Asda. We’ve done a deal with the NHS and will also be building a medical facility of 25,000 sq ft.” There are 301 car parking spaces planned for Asda, 22 medical facility staff parking spaces and an ambulance bay. A large piece of land approximately the same size as the medical facility is marked out on the plans but left blank. When asked what this was to be, Mr Harle said, “It’s been gifted to number 21 Battle Road to add to their garden.”

It was estimated that about 80–100 people had come to the exhibition just in the first two hours. The Voice asked several people at the exhibition for their comments: all were favourable. Elinor Hayler of Newgate Road said, “I think it’s a great idea. It will be competition for Tesco’s. I think it looks really good.” A young man who lives in Warrior Square said, “This is going to create three hundred jobs!” A Battle Road resident said, “From a point of self-interest it suits us. We’d like it to go through. Our house is one of the ones which is going to be demolished.” Info at: www.asda-hastings.co.uk

St Peter’s Church Chapel Park Road/St. Peter’s Road, Bohemia

Principal Services Sundays 10am Parish Eucharist 1st Sunday of the month 8.00am Eucharist BCP Fr. Alex writes, with concerns of Road Safety:As I drive around on errands I find that there are two particular hazard spots in St. Leonards and I am sure other drivers must have spotted these. I would like to draw Hastings Borough Council's attention to my concerns as I have seen several near misses because of the restriction of the road width, in both cases due to irregular parking. The first of these is the top of Church Road as it joins Bohemia Road. The residents living opposite the Lidl car park have a right to park in front of their houses. However, the overflow of Lidl's car park, (on the left hand side of Church Road looking north) the double yellow lines stop too short and the road narrows dangerously through cars being parked there. When cars enter from Bohemia Road coming from the direction of the town to go down Church Road they cannot see any vehicles coming up Church Road and a collision is inevitable. The second of these hazard spots is the bottom of Ellenslea Road as you turn the corner to face north up Southwater Road. There are white zig-zag lines which I understood to be nonparking curbs. This corner is very dangerous too. Drivers turn that blind corner often too fast, failing to see vehicles approaching from the opposite direction. Again the road width is severely restricted by these cars parking there and in conjunction with the sharp corner there will be a collision. Hastings Borough Council can you please make these hazard places safer for traffic and pedestrians by extending the double yellow lines from the top of Church Road to the entrance of Lidl car park. At the bottom of Ellenslea Road vehicles should not park on the zig-zags and the whole corner should have double yellow lines to make that danger spot safer for all too. I suspect that some of those parked there are using the station but do not want to pay the fee for the station car park.

Six Naked Ladies display at Empress Art “Six Naked Ladies” is the title of an art exhibition of life studies and portraits by six local women: Jo Biggs, Jean Brown, Louise Elcoate, Alma Hobbs, Arnelda John and Christine Swarbrigg. The exhibition ran at Empress Art in Tower Road, Bohemia, from Saturday 7 June to 28 June. Christine says “The group came together quite naturally about 18 months ago with a common interest in drawing, at the suggestion of Arnelda who knew that Ulla could model for us, and that we had a suitable place to meet. The other thing we had in common was that we were all at a stage of transition due to loss, illness or a change of circumstances. So there is an emotional bond as well as rising to the challenge that drawing regularly brings, especially the human body.

Christine Swarbrigg

“The friendship of the group is very important to me, and we have a bite to eat and some wine during the sessions; the subsequent drawings are usually bolder for some reason ...” On the models, she says “We are very lucky in Ulla and more recently Kerry as our models as they are very co-operative and keep very still as well as being beautiful. Ulla has wonderful skin and legs. Kerry has a great bum and glorious hair. I find Lotte the easiest to draw.” All the artists have submitted a self portrait. Voice of ... St Peter’s Road The Voice went down St Peter’s Road last month for our series of residents’ opinions. Thirty percent of our questionnaires were returned, and our thanks, as always, to those of you who filled them in and, more particularly, those who added extra comments. All but one of those who responded (87%) said they like living in Bohemia, and one said they don’t know. The same percentage think it is a friendly neighbourhood, though one person thinks it is not, and one said they don’t know. Yvonne said, “I love hearing the school playground at lunchtime – very soothing!” She added “We’re very lucky here to have the park and sea nearby.” Another lady commented about youngsters playing about by St Peter’s church. She said, “I watched two who were behaving suspiciously. I’ve had the windows smashed on my car and I think that’s what they might have been up to. They saw me watching and walked off, saying, ‘We’ll have to do it another night.’” 32% think that Bohemia needs a community centre, while no-one said no, and 56% voiced no opinion one way or the other. Yvonne said, “This area needs a childfriendly café – like the Rooms but closer.” Phone boxes: 19% favour the idea of a red phone box and 19% are against the idea. 13% attend one of the local churches regularly, though 75% do not. Everyone (100%) thinks that the architectural features of Bohemia should be preserved. 87% of residents said they like to see street bobbies patrolling our streets, though one added “Haven’t seen any.” Opinions on bus services were split equally (25% each), and 32% said they don’t know. 50% are satisfied with the provision of street lighting in St Peter’s Road, while 32% are not, and 13% had no strong feelings.

Post Office There was overwhelming support for a post office in Bohemia. 81% said that they would use one at least weekly. Only one person said they would not and one didn’t know. Almost everyone (87%) shops in Bohemia at least once a week. Only one person said they did not. Yvonne said “I wish there were more opportunities to buy the Community Centre vegetables.” Opinions were pretty equally split over Asda, a slight majority (38%) not in favour, while 32% are looking forward it. One lady said, “I am definitely against Asda. We have enough supermarkets which have already ruined Bohemia High Street a ghost town”.

Bill Third being interviewed by Sue King. Bill: “Bohemia has a village feel; lovely houses, lovely neighbours, everyone’s got a friendly word. I wouldn’t live anywhere else! I’ve only one complaint, the school run chaos in St Peter’s Road. Builders actually refused to work on my house after 3.30 pm because of the parents going past using bad language and arguing”. and made it

Burn down their houses! Feelings were strong about dog-fouling. 81% agree with our comment that people who let their dogs foul the pavement should be put in the village stocks. One added, “...and worse!”, another, “..and their houses should be burned down!” Jackie Hayles said, “Dog mess is a terrible problem in St Peter’s Road, which has a very bad reputation for it.” W. Harding commented, “The church could do with a fence to stop people letting their dogs use the grounds as a toilet. I feel sorry for anyone attending a wedding, as their shoes must be covered in muck!” Another resident said, “The dog-fouling is appalling. We filmed someone but the Council were not interested and couldn’t be bothered to follow it up!!!”

‘Welcome to Bohemia’ We introduced a new question this time, to find out what residents thought of the name “Bohemia Village” for this area. 38% were in favour, 19% preferred simply “Bohemia”, and 19% had no preference. Lawrence Adshead commented “Bohemia Village? If we want to be a village why don’t we look like one? Encourage planting, flower baskets, ask companies to plant shrubs (cabbage palms), have more flowers on the traffic island on Bohemia Road and a sign say-

ing, ‘Welcome to Bohemia’”. Nearly everyone we asked regularly read the Village Voice – though those who filled in our questionnaire would be likely to be readers. Yvonne said, “Thanks for the Village Voice – it really helps to build community.” Jackie Hayles said, “We are very grateful that such a newsletter exists. We’re very lucky.”

‘Surreal open-air theatre’ On the question of street cleaning, 44% of residents are dissatisfied with the standard of work, though 32% said they are satisfied. Mel Fisher was one of three residents who particularly complained about fly-tipping. “Often I see furniture, PCs and even broken glass left in the road. It costs Britain £600m per year to clear this rubbish.” Jackie Hayles said, “Sometimes suites of furniture line the pavements, like a surreal open-air theatre set.” Lawrence Adshead suggested, “There could be more litter bins around Lidl and the Shell garage.”

A Brief History of Bohemia

July 2008

– by local historian Edward Preston

The Tower Hotel, on the corner of London Road and Tower Road [Photo loaned by Ken Brooks]

Part 5 - Pubs & Cinemas Public houses were in profusion. Ye Olde Wheatsheaf Inn was first licensed in 1835, being the longest established in the area. The North Star, the Dripping Spring and the Tower Hotel all continue to operate, but three have ceased. These were the Prince of Wales Hotel at number 84 Bohemia Road, the Hearts of Oak Inn at no. 116 and the Bohemia Arms at no. 76. For a brief period – 1912 to 1913 – Bohemia could boast three cinemas. The Bohemia Electric Theatre occupied the upper part of what was Lullabuys at no.70 Bohemia Road. It claimed to be the smallest public cinema in Europe, with bench seating for an audience of no more than 25 patrons. In Lower South Road, there were the Bohemian Palace and the Bohemia Picturedrome, the latter being housed in what has become known as the Tower Buildings. Edward Preston

Is Bohemia in Suffolk? If it’s in New York, yes it is In a town called Islip (writes Sophie Fennessey), in the heart of Long Island, New York, lies a community wrought with history and tradition. Here, it is filled with rich European folklore and buried in the midst of Suffolk County. It has been given the name of Bohemia. LONG ISLAND

The first and original Bohemia however, was established in the Middle Ages in a region of central Czechoslovakia and has been known as such ever since. In 1855, three friends and their wives, who were seeking asylum from the Hapsburgs ruling, founded what was to become Bohemia, Long Island. They were John Vavra, John Kratchovil and Joseph Koula. It is said that they arrived in the woods of Suffolk County on the 5th of March and began to build a settlement for themselves there. Joseph Koula was a cabinet-maker by trade and with the help of the other two men he built each of them a house in which to live.

long way and now has a total area of 8.8 square miles and a population of around 9,871 with 3,326 separate households. Of these, the average annual income is $65,308 USD, which at today’s conversion rate equates to £32,900 GBP, which is far higher than the UK’s national average, which currently stands at £22,000 per annum. One hundred and fifty-three years after the dense woodland of Suffolk County was first inhabited, much has changed and progressed. As well as creating a future and a legacy, the three men who started it all also left behind a rich and colourful tapestry of folklore, legend and myth which to this day, enhances the character of Bohemia and adds to its delicate charm and appeal. As well as this, one of the homes built by the three on their first arrival, still stands today as a quiet reminder of the humble beginnings of this modern community.

CIGARS

The six then encouraged fellow family members and friends to emigrate and join them in their new-found freedom and the settlement steadily grew. In 1859, the Eastern European settlers named the newly established community the ‘Village of Tabor’ which, literally translated, means ‘Camp.’ Some time later, due to the majority of the residents being of Bohemian origin, the name was later changed to Bohemiaville to reflect this. Then, at a public meeting in 1894, the name was officially changed once more and conclusively to Bohemia. At this time, many of the earliest settlers were farmers although the first industry of Bohemia was cigar making and by the end of the nineteenth century there were eight cigar factories in both the Bohemia area and neighbouring Holbrook. This continued until 1930 when the Bohemian hand-made cigars were all but substituted by machine made ones, imported from New York City, and the trade was gradually displaced.

CZECH

The European and Czech influence remained strong until the 1960’s when the ethnicity of the area became more diverse and by 1970 Czechs were the fourth largest community in the area. Today, they represent only five per cent of the Bohemian population in Islip although according to the census of 2000, there are around 1,262,527 Americans who consider themselves to be of full or partial Czech descent, in addition to 441,403 persons listing their ancestry as Czechoslovakian.

Our address: page 3. Puzzle 60 answer Watson’s Greengrocers has become part of Wood’s Newsagents in Bohemia Road. This month’s winner is Tim Leakey of Magpie Close who has been sent a £10 Empress Art gift voucher. Well done, Tim. In the picture (below), Jean & Vic Watson are shown outside their shop [late 50s?]. The business to the right was a sweetshop run by two sisters. No.90, to the left, was run by Mr Modlinger as a hairdressers. Vic says ‘At the time there were nine greengrocers in Bohemia, including Tower Road. My wife and I ran the shop for 37 years, selling fruit and veg and flowers. We were open 5½ days a week and each morning there was a queue of people stretching round to Tower Road.

Pubs Dear Sir, how about an article on the pubs in Bohemia which have closed over the years, or one on those still open, giving their history? Adrian Cirket, Bohemia. Yes Adrain, we’d love to do such an item. Any photos of past or present pubs would be gratefully received. See Edward Preston’s article, p 14, this issue – ed.

Dogs Dear Sir, we moved to Bohemia a year and a half ago and have really loved the area. Our street is wonderful. We have met so many nice people and it makes such a difference from where we lived in London where we knew no-one in our neighbourhood. There is a lovely sense of community here and to actually know most of the people on your road really enhances that. There are a few things, though, that we feel would greatly improve the area. One of the main problems is the amount of dog crap everywhere. It just astounds me that people let their dogs mess anywhere without picking it up. It’s unhygenic, it makes walking on the pavement an obstacle course, it gets ingrained on the wheels of your pushchair and shoes, it smears all over the road when it rains and it smells even worse when it’s a hot day. Most importantly, it’s not the general public’s responsibility to have to deal with cleaning up the mess or having it in any way enter our lives. It’s the dog owners. They love their dogs enough to have them – love them enough to pick up their crap! We would greatly benefit from having a few more bins that they could place their dog’s mess in. There are definitely not enough of these. It might also help if the only sign warning of the possibility of a fine wasn’t faded and half way up a pole well above eye level. Apart from the spot fines, I think the best way of dealing with the problem is to ‘name and shame’. If you have a digital camera, take a photo of the offender and then we can have a page in the Voice with all the photos. St Peter’s Road residents (name & address supplied)

Walled garden

I would like, if I may, to say a very big thank you to everyone who has donated their old (and new ) wool for me to continue knitting for Save The Children. I have been overwhelmed at the response and kindness of strangers and friends. I now have enough wool to keep me going for several months at least. I feel that you can all be proud of yourselves for you just may have saved many babies’ lives. Thank you all so much. I have often sat and watched appeals on the television, whether it’s for people or animals, asking for a small monthly donation, but unfortunately am not in a position to help. So I am happy that by knitting these hats etc I feel I am doing something useful, something that comes from the heart and not my purse. [Picture: some of Mel’s knitting]

Dear Sir, the walled garden in Summerfields Wood could be used for a community garden, whereby everyone gets to put their own designs into practice. A mini Chelsea if you like. It would offer green space and give opportunity for everyone to have an input and create an area where people can visit and get ideas or just enjoy the use of it. I believe this has been done elsewhere. The college could be involved by setting up Landscape Architecture courses.

Mel Fisher, St Peter’s Road.

Frank Letchworth Dear Sir, I would like to ask an historical question. Is anything known about The Bohemia Bookshop, proprietor Frank Letchworth, that traded in the 1950~70 period? At that time, I was a lad working in a specialist bookshop in London and Frank was a competitor. I would have thought Frank was quite elderly by the 1970s. I moved down here (Bexhill) four years ago, and had forgotten the above until I browsed your magazine.

Amherst Road resident (name & address given).

Ironmonger Charles Webb Dear Sir, in l993 I purchased my house in Markwick Terrace which I discovered to have been built for a Mr. Charles Edward Webb who had an ironmongers shop, as hardware stores were then called, in Bohemia Road where Scott James is now situated. It was a double one on the corner of Tower Road and was part of a chain with shops in Sittingbourne, Tenterden and Bournemouth. There is a picture of the shop in the Hastings library, and to all intents it must have been quite profitable – from this photograph you can still see the outline of the old shop today. The family came from Birmingham originally, so I was told, and I discovered that the original name for my house was Himley, a local area of Birmingham. Mr. Webb was quite entrepreneurial and had a contract to supply the iron railings along the seafront. The drain covers of my house, which are cast iron, have the name C.E.Webb on them. He lived in the area until 1924 and then moved to Bournemouth. I think he had three sons and no doubt they moved with the family. Webbs of Battle was opened a few years ago, so the family is still prospering, although alas, the shop in Bohemia Road is no more. I wonder if any of your readers knew Mr. Webb or remember the shop? D.C.V. Silverstone.
