oca Raton eighth grader David Dunleavy has been selected by the Palm Beach County Steering Committee of the National Campaign to Stop Violence as the first place boy “Ambassador” for his efforts to stop youth violence in the Do The Write Thing Challenge (DTWT), which gives Palm Beach County middle school students the chance to examine the impact of violence on their lives through written essays or poems, reflecting on what can be done about it. Dunleavy is joined by Ashley Coons, an eighth grader from Loxahatchee, who is the first place girl “Ambassador.”

Nathanael Sybron, a sixth grader from Howell L. Watkins Middle School, was ranked second among young men and Christopher Burrett, a seventh grader at Watson B. Duncan Middle School, finished third. All six student finalists will receive cash prizes. The six teens were selected from more than 19,000 participating Palm Beach County middle school students. “The goal of the program is to reduce youth violence in schools, at home and in neighborhoods,” explained West Palm Beach trial lawyer Bill Bone, chairman of the local steering committee. “Many young teens have been bullied or stigmatized by the way they look or talk or act and that can be very traumatic sometimes resulting in enormous pain and even suicide.” O
