Harry Connick, Jr. Performs At Count de Hoernle Amphitheater

H

arry Connick, Jr. made his album debut as the pianist for a Dixieland Jazz ensemble—a trumpet, clarinet, trombone, standup bass and drums—playing New Orleans standards. It was recorded at Sea-Saint Studios in New Orleans and released in 1977. Connick was 10 years old. The silken-voiced Connick, who performs at the Count de Hoernle Amphitheater at Mizner Park on April 9th at 8 p.m., looked a little anachronistic on that first album cover—a little kid fronting five Bourbon Street veterans. The album was produced by the local parish district attorney, one Harry Connick, Sr. But by then Harry was a veteran, too, having played publicly since age 6. To explain this, consider two things: First, his parents owned a record store, and second, this is New Orleans we’re talking about. Connick’s first grown-up album came a decade later, after he’d relocated to New York City and studied music in Manhattan. It was an instrumental collection of jazz standards that earned him a string of lengthy gigs at Big Apple nightspots. But the real magic happened when he sang—it was as if a time-travel episode had occurred and there was a young Frank Sinatra singing at that piano. Connick’s sound was mesmerizing, and he quickly accepted an array of opportunities that revealed his Renaissance-man talents. He performed the soundtrack for Rob Reiner’s film “When Harry Met Sally,” landed his first acting role as a featured crew member in the World War II film, “Memphis Belle,” contributed a song to the “Godfather III” film soundtrack and put together an Emmy-nominated variety special for PBS, called “Swingin’ Out Live.” Amid all this, Connick released three consecutive multi-platinum albums, won two straight Grammy Awards for Jazz Male Vocal Performance and conducted a two-year world tour. He would go on to perform on Broadway and have a recurring role in TV’s “Will & Grace.” With Connick’s vast repertoire of original and standard songs, 40 years of keyboard experience (he started playing at age 3) and velvety voice, you can expect an unforgettable show.
