Fashionable Fundraiser National MS Society South Florida Chapter Gala Raises $500,000 For Research

T

he National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society, South Florida Chapter recently held its 28th Annual MS Gala & Fashion Show presented by DBS Financial Group/MassMutual at the Broward County Convention Center. More than 1,000 people attended the event, which has become one of the community’s most high-profile fundraisers.

James and Ann Marie Dunn, Howard Bienenfeld, Carol Lasek, Mitch and Blake Starr, Steve Jackman, David Schulman, Phillis Oeters, Deborah DelPrete, Karen Dresbach and Carrie Schulman

During the evening, the distinguished Hope Award was presented to Phillis Oeters, corporate vice president of government and community relations of Baptist Health South Florida. Oeters serves on several community boards, including the United Way and the Nat Moore Foundation. Oeters also served as chairpersons for the 2009-2010 Orange Bowl Committee and the Neurologically Injured Compensation Fund for the State of Florida, a billion-dollar fund responsible for caring for children injured at birth. “Phillis was a natural selection for the Hope Award,” said Karen Dresbach, president of the National MS Society, South Florida Chapter. “Her remarkable efforts to better the entire South Florida community are unsurpassed, and we are all amazed by her dedication to bettering this community.” For her third consecutive year, Deborah DelPrete chaired the event, which raised $500,000. To date, the annual event has raised nearly $5 million to help the National MS Society fund its research to find the cause and eventual cure of the disease. An event highlight was designer Rene Ruiz’s fashion show, featuring the debut of his Fall 2011 collection for men and women. The runway models glittered with jewelry provided by J.R. Dunn Jewelers, the event’s official jewelry sponsor. Additional event sponsors included Philanthropic Partners, Michele and Steve Jackman, Platinum Sponsor, Bienenfeld, Lasek & Starr, LLC and South Florida Audi Dealers.
