Dear Premier Club Members, The Spring holidays will soon be upon us! One of the joys of Club Membership is the opportunity to establish special holiday traditions. We do everything we can to create the ideal atmosphere for celebration at this important time of the year, and always have a nice variety of Easter and Passover events planned – such as our Grand Easter Brunch and the annual Egg Hunt. We hope all of you will join us for one or more of these events. It’s a chance to begin – or continue – your own Club holiday traditions with family and friends. We’ve also got a lot of non-holiday-related events coming up. Take note that our Artist-In-Residence series continues this month with Colin Hunter and Bobby Caldwell, who will appear as part of our monthly One Nite Stand jazz concert series. It’s not too soon to begin planning your Memorial Day weekend! As always, we’ve got a great line-up of events and activities to choose from — something for everyone. Every weekend evening, we’ll be hosting a poolside party for Members of all ages at Beaches Bar. This year’s party will feature a special celebrity DJ (to be announced soon!). And on Saturday evening, it’s the big Memorial Day LobsterBash featuring John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band. We hope you’ll be able to join us to kick off the (unofficial) beginning of summer. Our recurring signature events – the Easter Egg Hunt, One Nite Stand, and LobsterBash are a few examples – have become more and more popular over the years. These events offer additional opportunities to establish Club traditions with your family and friends, as other Premier Members have done for generations. There’s so much going on at the Club these days, it’s hard to keep track! Fortunately, we’ve created an easy way for you to stay on top of the Club event calendar so you don’t have to miss a thing. All you need to do is email us at activities@waldorfastoria.com and let us know whether you’d like to receive updates by email, text, or both. (If you’d like to receive updates by text, please include your mobile phone number.) We’ll send you regular and last-minute notices about events and activities, plus information on special offers such as Members-only deals across the Resort & Club. Happy Holidays to all of you!

Udo NÖger Light – its manifestations and its expression – is the single-minded focus of Udo Nöger’s work. The German artist captures, analyzes, reworks and reflects; each of his pieces an attempt to make the intangible tangible. Nöger’s paintings consist of three translucent canvas layers that absorb the light of their surroundings and appear to reflect it back at the viewer. Deceptively simple organic shapes, often featured not on the surface of the works but in the middle layer, introduce a deeper sense of space from which the light radiates out. The shapes also highlight contrasts between light and shade while creating a sense of fluidity and movement. Light is revealed in its truest sense, in both its physical manifestation and its inherent spirituality. Benvenuto!

R

Ryan Rotunno, Lucca’s New Restaurant Manager

Ryan Rotunno came on board at the Resort & Club during the height of the season. That means, as the new restaurant manager at Lucca, he hit the ground running. “I’m currently settling into my new role and really enjoying the warm embrace from everyone,” he says. “It’s great to be part of such an incredible team and to be able to work with Lucca Chef Adam Pile, who is really remarkable, as well as a kitchen full of talent and a restaurant staff that truly understands what service means.” Ryan, who has racked up 16 years of experience in the industry, graduated from the University of Delaware with a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management. He launched his career with Marriott Hotels but then spent a number of years with Hyatt Hotels, moving from Trenton, New Jersey, to Philadelphia and then on to Orlando – moving up the ranks as he went. (And that wasn’t his first sojourn in Orlando – he had interned in hotel and lodging operations at Walt Disney World.) He comes to us from the Loews Sapphire Falls Resort in Orlando, where, as manager of the Amatista Cookhouse, he participated in the grand opening of the 1,000-room hotel. “I’m brand new to the area and am really enjoying the culture and Boca lifestyle,” he says. “The Club Members have made me feel very welcome. I’m really looking forward to getting to know them – and what makes them happy – better.”

Bobby Caldwell

As Smooth as They Come

B

Bobby Caldwell is no stranger to South Florida. Born in Manhattan, he was raised in Miami. And it was in Florida that Little Richard heard Caldwell and his band perform, leading the star to fire the band he was touring with and hire Caldwell’s crew instead. That brought the singer of blue-eyed soul, to Los Angeles but it wasn’t until he returned to Miami that he landed his first recording contract. His first album – the eponymous Bobby Caldwell, featuring the hit “What You Won’t Do for Love” – was recorded in Miami in 1978. He recorded his most recent album – Cool Uncle – in Miami, too. Dubbed “2015’s Smartest Retro-Soul Revival” by Rolling Stone magazine, Cool Uncle is the product of an unlikely intergenerational partnership between Caldwell and Jack Splash, a Grammy Award-wining recording artist, musician, songwriter and record producer better known for his work with artists like Alicia Keys, Kendrick Lamar, John Legend and Cee-Lo Green. “I looked at it like we were [our] own little weird garage band,” Splash told Rolling Stone. “We came with open hearts, open minds and a bunch of weird ideas. And we started everything from scratch.” The result, according to Rolling Stone, is nothing less than “silky-smooth bliss.” Caldwell says he plans to include a few songs from the Cool Uncle album in his upcoming performance at the Resort & Club. “We also picked up a couple of songs from my earlier albums that we have never performed live,” he told BCL. “There’s a new energy when you change the show up a little bit. It’s good

for the audience, good for the band, good for me – it keeps the spirit alive.” There will be plenty of familiar favorites as well, starting with “What You Won’t Do for Love” and ending, perhaps, with a surprise. You see, in addition to being a gifted vocalist, Caldwell is a talented songwriter with a string of chart-toppers to his credit – chart-toppers that were recorded and made famous by other artists. “A lot of people don’t know I wrote “Next Time I Fall in Love” for David Sedaris and Amy Grant,” Caldwell says. “They don’t know I wrote “All or Nothing at All” for Al Jarreau - God rest his soul. They don’t know I wrote “Heart of Mine” for Boz Scaggs.” You get the idea. He’s still writing. And, after a long and accomplished career in the music industry, he’s still writing love songs. He admits he’s a hopeless romantic, but it’s more than that. “There have been more songs written about [love] in the history of time than any other subject and there’s a reason for that,” he says. “Heartbreak or new found love, everyone’s been through it, so it’s a common theme. Meditation

A

Countless studies have documented the health benefits of meditation, ranging from stress relief to enhanced concentration.

According to cardiologist Herbert Benson, MD, director emeritus of the Benson-Henry Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital and Mind Body Medicine Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, meditation can relieve any condition that is caused or worsened by stress. That includes chronic pain, high blood pressure and anxiety. Research has also shown that regular meditation can help boost mood, improve heart health, enhance immunity and ease problems encountered during pregnancy. Studies also show that meditation changes brain physiology to slow aging. “It reduces stress and its effects on the body,” explained Dr. Elizabeth Hoge, a psychiatrist at the Center for Anxiety and Traumatic Stress Disorders at Massachusetts General Hospital and an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. In Buddhist monks who meditate, researchers found evidence of greater activity in areas of the brain associated with attention, memory, learning and conscious perception. Higher activity levels in areas of the brain associated with positive emotions, like happiness, were also recorded. Repetition seems to be the key that unlocks the benefits of meditation. That doesn’t mean you have to say “om” over and over again or become a Buddhist. Meditation comes in many forms. Find one that works for you and discover the benefits for yourself. bocaresort.com •

GOLF Magazine Releases New List of Top 100 Teachers in America

G

GOLF Magazine released its biennial list of America’s Top 100 Teachers in America for 2017-2018 and once again Kellie Stenzel and Scott Munroe – of the Resort & Club’s Kellie Stenzel Golf Academy – are on the list! The complete list can be seen in the March 2017 print issue and online at Golf.com. Since its inception in 1991, GOLF Magazine’s Top Teachers in America ranking has become the industry standard for teaching excellence due to the diligent selection process that GOLF Magazine employs to assemble the list. “Every two years the Credential and Selection committees dedicate a lot of time and research to recognize the golf industry’s best teachers by naming them to our Top 100 list,” said David DeNunzio, Managing Editor for Instruction for GOLF Magazine. “These individuals have been selected because of their commitment to broaden the appeal of golf by helping their students understand and enjoy the game.” Candidates for GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers in America list are selected from nominees submitted by the PGA, LPGA, United States Golf Teachers Federation, top industry executives and GOLF Magazine readers. GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 list is the only national golf instructor roster that combines outside academic and PGA Professional peer review. The nominees are screened against fifteen baseline criteria and then examined and ranked by a group comprised of 15 active and former Top 100 Teachers. Candidates are also judged on their willingness to give back to the game and to the PGA and LPGA through apprentice education, member continued education, research or lesson programs. Final recommendations are made by a separate Selection Committee. Congratulations to our very own Kellie Stenzel and Scott Munroe for once again making the list of the Top 100 Teachers in America! bocaresort.com •

Clocking In the unique scoring system used in tennis

A

Andre Agassi once shared his theory on the origins of the unique scoring system used in tennis, saying, “It was invented to cause frustration to those who chose to play.” While he undoubtedly had a point, the actual origins of the 15, 30, 40 scoring system are not known. “Many believe that the system has medieval and French roots,” the USTA reports. “One of the most common explanations for the system is that it was based on a clock face. Each point took approximately 15 seconds. Consequently, the first point was called ‘15’ the second point ’30,’ the third point ‘45’… and the final point was game.” Others agree that the system was likely based on a clock face but attribute the odd scoring to the movement of the clock hands. If four points were needed to win the game, then the first point would be registered at 15 and the second at 30. The next stop would, logically, have been 45. But what does logic have to do with it?

C o u r t D ate s Stop by the Tennis Pro Shop for information or reservations or call/text 447-3939 option #6. Easter Bowl Round Robin Saturday, April 15 | 10 am • No partner needed Ladies’ Member/Guest Round Robin and Luncheon Friday, May 5 | 9:30 am Junior Tennis Program Session 3 runs through Saturday, April 22 • A new session begins Tuesday, April 25 Students will experience a wide variety of activities, ranging from skills instruction to age level-appropriate games. For additional information, contact Director of Junior Tennis Todd Roth at 561-447-3105 or todd.roth@waldorfastoria.com. Tiny Tots (ages 3 - 5) and Rising Stars (ages 5 - 7) Tuesdays & Thursdays | 3:30 – 4:30 pm Saturdays | 9 – 10 am Hot Shots (ages 8 - 16) Tuesdays & Thursdays | 4:30 – 6 pm Saturdays | 10 – 11:30 am

Billie Jean King had an explanation for why 40 is used instead. She, along with many other, subscribes to a theory based on the rule that requires a player to win by two points. Say the game reached deuce; if the hand on that clock that was probably on a court in medieval France was set at 40, then it could be moved to 50 and then 60. Despite its quirkiness, the unique scoring system was adopted for the first Wimbledon Championship in 1877 and has been confusing players ever since.

Summer Camp

Quest Club Summer Camp will keep happy campers active all day long with a variety of interactive activities, crafts, outings, open-air recreation and games. Sports will be part of the mix this year, too! Your kids could play basketball with NBA legends or tennis with champions and learn golf from the best of the best.

A Camp for Everyone! A typical day at Quest Club Summer Camp will include hands-on activities and recreation every morning and every afternoon. We’ll keep mixing things up – offering different activities each day of the week and at alternate times of day to fit summer travel schedules. With scenic locations on the docks of Lake Boca or the sands of the Boca Beach Club (weather permitting, of course), no one will have lunch with a better view! And each week, the kids will enjoy an outing to one of a variety of nearby fun-spots, like the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, Cinemark Palace movie theater, Boomers, Monkey Joe’s – the home of fun-filled inflatable play – and Strikes @ Boca bowling among others. SAMPLE DAILY SCHEDULE 9 am Registration & Ice Breakers 10 am Morning Recreation: Flow Rider, Ping Pong, Volleyball, Fitness or Basketball 11 am Morning Hands-On: Ceramics, Beach Watercolor, Nature Trek 12 noon Scenic Lunch 1 pm Afternoon Recreation: FlowRider, Tennis, Golf, Croquet, Bocce 2 pm Poolside Shenanigans 3 pm Afternoon Hands-On: Kids in the Kitchen, Quest Club Tree, Gardening 4 pm Pick Up RATES $35 half day 9 am – 12 noon or 1 – 4 pm $50 full day 9 am – 4 pm (includes lunch) $15 first-time camper registration fee (includes souvenir, t-shirt, bag and more) AGE GROUPS: Juniors 3-7 and Seniors 8-12 SPECIALIZED SESSIONS To make sure your child’s summer is memorable, Quest Club Summer Camp has partnered with some of the best in their field! • Every month throughout the summer, NBA veteran Alvin Williams and the Academy of Hoops will return for one week. • Kelli Stenzel and her team of golf professionals will host a week-long precision golf camp just for juniors. • Todd Roth, the Resort & Club’s director of Junior Tennis, and his special summer programming are winners each summer and are always well attended. • The Resort & Club’s own culinary experts will invite kids into their world and teach them to roll sushi, build the perfect pizza, make meatballs and much more. • At the Health Club, Daniyel, Sasha and some of our other professionals trainers will get the kids moving and their blood pumping every day – rain or shine!
