Looking To The Future

A message from your Chamber President Connecting, Advancing, Protecting, Enhancing It’s our job to help business succeed by Connecting members, Advancing commerce, Protecting business and Enhancing community. I’m proud of the impact the Boca Chamber has had in Protecting business throughout the years. Our Chamber has been at the forefront of many issues, and has worked hand-in-hand with our partners at the federal level in Washington D.C., the state level in Tallahassee and at the local levels with the county’s Business Development Board, Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Boca Raton’s City Council. With the collaboration of these entities, Boca Raton is the leading destination for tourism activity and location for Corporate Headquarters.

By Troy M. McLellan CCE, FCCP President & CEO

Your Chamber has been working side-by-side with the City to create a sustainable funding source for new business in Boca Raton. Through years of hard work to Advancing commerce in our City, I am pleased to announce The City of Boca Raton now has dedicated funding in the city budget available for economic development activity. This is an accomplishment that will ensure a robust business community well into the future. A major local priority for the Chamber is the creation of an independent Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Director reporting directly to the CRA. This structural enhancement, in collaboration with residents, property owners, businesses and other organizations will foster redevelopment in the CRA District which includes downtown Boca Raton. We work diligently to stay informed of potential anti-business policy that may harm the economic viability of our city and ultimately affect the success of your business. To accomplish the important role of advocating on behalf of business and protecting your interests, the Boca Chamber met with state policy makers in March at the Tallahassee Fly-In and will take the hill in May at our Washington Fly-In. In addition to our successful efforts in ensuring pro-business policy, the Boca Chamber has seen many other achievements. In the last 12 months, businesses have grown and prospered because of exposure received at events, connections made through networking opportunities and lessons learned at our many educational seminars lead by experts in our region. The Boca Chamber offers a myriad of opportunities for personal and professional growth, and the success stories are on the rise. To your success,

Leadership Boca Class of 2013 Enhancing Community The single most important ingredient for Enhancing a successful, thriving community is an investment in leadership. Each year the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce hosts a Leadership Boca class to ensure that our future leaders possess the knowledge that will enable them to meet the issues and challenges facing our community in the future. The program is designed for chamber members who are seeking to gain in depth knowledge of Boca Raton and surrounding communities. Created similarly to leadership programs across the State of Florida, Leadership Boca is a 3 month Co-Chair Brian Altschuler commitment that requires participants to interact with community and business Chair Tajiana Ancora-Brown leaders. Depending on the day, participants may be taking a tour of an international company’s headquarters or sitting at a roundtable with one of the county’s top elected officials. Tajiana Ancora-Brown, Marketing and Admission Director for Boca Prep International School, is serving as the chair of Leadership Boca 2013. Brian Altschuler, Executive Director of Human Resource Operations at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, is serving as the co-chair. Together they will assist in organizing this year’s program and the 42 participants who were accepted into the program. Each of these participants will not only benefit from meeting and networking with community leaders but also building relationships with one another. Leadership Boca kicks off with a unique program in which the class participates in a simulated society. This experience helps to set the tone for the rest of the program for all participants. In addition, the program includes a strategy session with an internationally-recognized strategist. The culmination of the various activities included in the Leadership Boca class has led to many graduates finding opportunities to further advance their professional and personal goals with many going on to serve on local nonprofit boards and getting involved with local politics. Leadership Boca 2013 began in March. Graduation for the Leadership Boca class of 2013 is schedule for June 2013. If you are interested in participating in the Leadership Boca 2014 class, applications will be available July 2013. Government Affairs Update Protecting Business The Florida 2013 Legislative Session is in full swing. Members of the South Palm Beach County business community should advocate for probusiness decisions to be made by our Legislators. Effective communication is the key to sending a successful message. The most important step is to communicate your viewpoint to the appropriate officials. Depending on the scale of the issue, this could be anyone from a local to a national official. It’s vital to address your message to someone at the appropriate level to deal with your concerns. Attorney General Pam Bondi

Here are the most commonly used methods of directly communicating. • Personal Meetings - Face to face contact is usually the most effective way to communicate your viewpoint. Leave a written summary so they can make an informed decision. • Telephone Conversations - Phone calls have a quality of immediacy and personal directness approaching that of personal meetings, but take much less effort to arrange and usually take less time. For these reasons, they are more common than meetings. • Individually Written Mail including fax and email - This is the most common method of sending your views to politicians, and is in the medium range of effectiveness. • Individually Addressed Mass Mail - If you have gone to the trouble of writing a good letter, you may use technology to address it to a number of representatives. Apart from individual addressing, these letters should be hand signed. • Petitions - These are often the first resort of the inexperienced campaigner. Petitions are rarely noticed by politicians, and their reading is a mere formality. The effectiveness of an effort depends on its timing, as well as other factors. Usually sooner is better, although late efforts can sometimes be successful. If you fail on the first try, it may be time to consider a longer-term campaign targeted months or years ahead. • Generally - advocating may also be done when no particular issue is in the air, just to keep representatives aware of your views and of your interest in their performance.

The Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, South Palm Beach County’s voice for business, has unveiled its 2013 Legislative Agenda. It was developed based on input from the US Chamber of Commerce, Florida Chamber of Commerce, the Palm Beach County Business Development Board and the Boca Chamber membership. The agenda is a blueprint to chart the course for a strong and sustainable regional business community and it is focused on the business climate and lowering the cost of doing business. The agenda includes the following priorities: • Support the stoppage of new mandatory leave initiatives that will increase costs for business and create an uncompetitive business environment in Florida. • Support amending Florida statues so that a referendum is prohibited in regard to local comprehensive plan amendments. • Support lowering Worker’s Compensation insurance costs by stabilizing the price of prescription medicine dispensed through a physician’s office. • Support the reduction of sales tax charged on commercial real estate property. • Support the reinstatement of the 2012-2013 reduction of 300 million in the 2013-2014 higher education budget. Thank you for your support of the Boca Chamber and for helping secure Florida and South Palm Beach County’s future by engaging in the legislative agenda.
