Sailing Heals Sails into our 5th Year of Spirit-Lifting Escapes at Sea Sailing Heals has been privileged to host over 2,500 VIP patient guests and caregivers over the last 5 years for spirit-lifting afternoons at sea and beautiful sea-side lunches. Our mission is simply to give people that are going through a difficult health challenge, a chance to escape their problems for a while and be reminded that exciting adventures--and new friends--can still be a part of their life experience. With over 200 volunteer Host Captains registered across 9 states, and about 34 days of sailing a year, we are proud to start our busy season each year at Miami Sailing Week and are very grateful for the support of Bacardi, Studio Milano and all those who contribute to the Pro-Am Gala! Launching Boats and Dreams since 1990. Twenty-five years ago, Shake-A-Leg Miami entered into a partnership with the City of Miami to convert the historic US Coast Guard Seaplane Base into Miami’s premier community watersports center. Together we have created the community gateway to Biscayne Bay and beyond. Our Mission is to use the marine environment to improve the health, education and independence of adults and children with disabilities, as well as disadvantaged youth and their families. We are especially proud of our quarter century of service to this diverse community. Lives have been changed, individuals have achieved levels of skills and confidence that they would never have known and miracles are an everyday event. Thousands of Miamians have found freedom on Biscayne Bay. Working with a variety of organizations and school, we have developed programs which are accessible to youth, people with disabilities and wounded veterans. Through the support from generous individuals and community partners, we serve over 8,000 children and adults annually. We use the excitement of water-sports activities to motivate and challenge. We use the calming effect of water to soothe and comfort those individuals who need a little peace and tranquility after suffering an incidence of trauma or loss. We are a place where kids are helping kids make friends, learn skills and live a better life. We are honored to be a part of Bacardi Miami Sailing Week. Thank you for all you do for the community. Team Paradise is a truly unique sailing organization that gives the disabled community an opportunity to sail at all levels of expertise. No disability is severe enough to prevent sailing with us. Wheelchair bound or not, our boats are customized and adapted to match the abilities of the crew. Team Paradise will get you out sailing! U.S. Olympic gold medal sailor, Magnus Liljedahl, founded Team Paradise in 2005. He shares what he learns from others and is quick to point out the many benefits that sailing has to offer: “Sailing is oftentimes a soothing and relaxing experience, providing solitude and contemplation while improving concentration, core strength and mental wellness. Sailing teaches teamwork and communication, and is a shared accomplishment that builds self-confidence. outh Florida has been fortunate to not have endured a hurricane since 2005, but the recent hurricane that ripped through South Florida and is causing havoc is a very popular music band: HAVOC 305. This classic rock band of four musicians consists of Jwani Brito at the drums, Rick De Cubas at the guitar, Danny Garcia at the bass and Ian Rose as the lead vocal. Their repertoire is extensive, they never skip a beat and they possess an engaging, unique stage presence… for these reasons they have become Miami’s favorite local band. Since 2010 BACARDI Miami Sailing Week and the Bacardi Cup have added an art component to their annual sailing program in order to entertain sailors and the Coconut Grove community during the week-long event. In previous seasons, renowned U.S. and European photographers exhibited during BMSW, followed by Wynwood’s street artists and the unforgettable boat-building project at CocoWalk. The cultural component of the event has become of extreme importance because Coconut Grove envisions itself as a sailing town and not just a winter sailing destination, and BACARDI desires to effortlessly blend the two together into a delicious cocktail of culture and sporting events. After exploiting arts and crafts, this year BMSW and the Bacardi Cup wish to include in its program the power of music and HAVOC 305 is by far the local favorite. On Wednesday, March 8th at Regatta Park, located within the BACARDI Miami Sailing Week village, HAVOC 305 will play for the sailors and the community from 7:30PM to 9:30PM. Access to the event is complimentary and sponsored by Bacardi… Let the concert and fun times begin!

Because Sailing Week is not just about sailing, but introducing the sport to the community, CocoWalk and various art schools of Miami such as Brideprep Academy of Arts & Minds will be painting nautical inspired images at the open-air shopping center on Saturday March 4th. WHEN YOU SAIL CLASS REPORT CARD “The Star Class is learning how to be strong and prestigious without Olympic status: A greater number of boats in production; increase in sail production; the Bacardi Cup stronger than ever; Star Sailors League with another approach on the sailing sport; and the Star Winter Series with its four regattas. Australia and Chile are showing good activity too. We look forward to the Star Worlds in 2017 in Denmark.” “The Star is a great boat and class… with famous sailors, tradition and style. One great challenge is to upgrade the Star color on your sail. For us, it was a special feeling after winning the Gold Star in Buenos Aires 2015. Pleasant to sail in light air due to enormous sail area and low water surface, it is extremely sensible in medium winds requiring adjusting the spar (rigging, wires and sails). For heavy winds, it gets very athletic. There is no secret! Just get intimate with your crew, boat, mast and sails. All have to be joined smoothly together.” Class President Lars Grael

ast April, Coral Reef Yacht Club hosted the 2016 Star Worlds. It was like the Bacardi Cup doubled…with Miami’s Augie Diaz winning with his very talented and world champion crew Bruno Prada. Augie wears a nice watch he won as Rolex Yachtsman of the Year and he is a past CRYC Dockwalloper. Watch out at this year’s Bacardi Cup for the many new stars who were shinning at the Worlds. Miami local Magnus Liljedahl has won the Bacardi Cup five times as Crew. In November 2016, he was honored with CRYC’s Dockwalloper Award, presented for leadership in connection with amateur yacht racing, under sail, in bay or ocean. A ONE-DESIGN FOR

ince its introduction in March 2012, the J/70 one-design speedster is already sailing in 25+ countries with over 1,200+ boats delivered and more than four dozen fleets established worldwide. Why has J/70 achieved this remarkable growth? Because J/70 is simply fun to sail and is easily handled by 12 year old skippers, women’s teams and adults well into their 70s. The J/70 achieved the unprecedented feat of being the first sailboat in history to receive four of yachting’s most prestigious awards at the same time- the “European Yacht of the Year”, “Sailing World Boat of the Year”, “SAIL Best Boat” and “Yachts & Yachting Best Performance” awards. And, it’s the only boat in World Sailing Federation history to ever be awarded “International Class” status in less than twenty-four months from its introduction. The fourth J/70 World Championship will be sailed off Porto Cervo, Sardinia, hosted by YC Costa Smeralda- over 80 teams from two dozen countries are expected to attend!

MOMENTUM… In virtually every regatta (one-design or multi-class), the J/70 class sets attendance records. It’s been called “the right boat at the right time” by sailing industry veterans worldwide. The first J/24 Midwinters in 1978 had 21 boats, the first J/70 Midwinters in Key West had 39 boats. The next four J/70 Key West Midwinter regattas had 55+ boats. Momentum is growing significantly in Europe, South America and Asia. Italy hosted their fourth EuroCup on Lake Garda with 35+ boats. YC Monaco has established a large fleet in Monte Carlo and hosted the inaugural J/70 European Championship in 2015 with nearly 70 boats! The German J/70 Class created the Deustche Segel-Bundesliga, a sailing league format that provides “college-style” sailing for everyone. The response has been overwhelming! Since inception in 2014, 80+ sailing clubs participated in a summer-long five regatta “championship” program. The format has become so successful that similar “sailing leagues” in 2016 were conducted in Denmark, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Russia, Italy, Monaco, United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway; with the finale for the “SAILING Champions League” taking place at YC Costa Smeralda in Porto Cervo, Sardinia.

2016: A GREAT YEAR FOR THE VIPER 640

n 2016, the Viper 640 Class crossed a number of thresholds on its way to becoming an international class.

In January, the 30+ clubs of the Gulf Yachting Association selected the Viper to be its new interclub boat for their century-old Capdevielle series. Immediately, GYA member clubs began ordering Vipers. The first eight new Vipers were delivered to the GYA’s Opening Regatta at Fairhope (AL) Yacht Club in May; and watching the club members rig their new Vipers was like watching kids under the tree at Christmas. If you look out across the Viper fleet at this week’s BACARDI Miami Sailing Week, you’re likely to see one of the dozen or so GYA Vipers sailing in their first Bacardi Regatta. In November, 2016, two exciting things happened for the Vipers. On November 9, World Sailing voted to accept the Viper 640 Class’s application to become a World Sailing member class. Following that, members of the Viper 640 Class Association cast their votes ratifying membership in World Sailing. Becoming a World Sailing class was a major step for the Viper. With established fleets in both eastern and western Australia and growing fleets in Europe, World Sailing recognition will be a major stepping stone from which the Viper Class will expand its footprint around the globe. This World Sailing announcement was followed closely by the first Viper 640 International Championship, sailed in conjunction with the 2016 North American Championship on Bermuda’s Great Sound. Hosted by the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club, this dual championship had all the trappings of a World Championship including international race management personnel and an international jury. And what great sailing that was...almost as grand as what Vipers enjoy on Biscayne Bay.

CONNECT 2017: AN EVEN BETTER YEAR Which brings us to this year’s BACARDI Miami Sailing Week. A record fleet of Vipers is expected to be racing two regattas on Biscayne Bay. The Viper’s hold their EFG Winter Cup the Sunday-Monday before Bacardi, followed by Tuesday’s Miami Scorch – a reach across the Bay to Key Biscayne’s No Name Harbor for a great Cuban luncheon complimented by sea stories from around the world. Then, sailed in concert with BACARDI Miami Sailing Week, is the finale of the EFG Viper Pan-American Championship. The EFG Pan-Am circuit includes a series of qualifying regattas that earn Viper sailors points that they carry into the Championship this week in Miami. From Perth to Lake Garda and Bermuda to Long Beach, Viper sailors have been looking forward to this week’s EFG Viper Pan-American Championship. Looking further down the road, the Viper Class has its first World Championships on the drawing board and that’s sure to attract even more high-performance sailors from around the world. A CLASS CATAMARAN

he A-Class Catamaran (A-Cat) is the most actively raced high performance single-handed boat in North America. Capable of reaching speeds of 25 knots in 12 knots of breeze, it continues to develop and increase its performance and ease of use.

Historically the A-Cat has been dominant as an upwind weapon with double the speed of more traditional boats and with downwind speed equivalent or above the top spinnaker sport boats. With tight tacking angles and normal speeds of 10 to 14 knots upwind (and now up to 18 knots upwind when foiling upwind), the A-Cat is a pleasure to sail with a balanced and subtle helm and one that will climb over almost any boat on the water. People who join the class are diverse. Some are pros who keep an A-Cat for their own personal racing. Some are engineers who innovate with new systems. Some are dinghy and keelboat sailors who want to experience a more responsive boat. And some just love catamarans. For those who want to foil, the boat is now becoming increasingly fast and able to beat the spinnaker boats of the past which used to give it a run. The class breaks out the scoring for these foilers so that “like boats” can compete with “like boats”. For those who aren’t quite ready to get airborne, the class preserves tight racing and separate scoring. No matter your choice, the freedom from a kite allows for dramatically faster and more tactical mark roundings and the possibility of foiling around both the upwind and downwind marks. It also reduces running costs to an absolute minimum with most people buying one sail every year or two. Those who want to get into the class have a wide range of options. They can buy a starter for the price of a Laser or they can buy a brand new boat from DNA, eXploder, or other manufacturers for less than $30,000.

THE M32 SERIES The M32 Series is the name given to a series of M32 racing circuits hosted around the world for M32 owners and teams. Currently, there are three M32 Series circuits – the M32 Series North America including venues such as Miami, Newport RI, Chicago and San Francisco; the M32 Scandinavian Series in city venues such as Gothenburg, Stockholm and Helsinki, and new in 2016, the M32 Mediterranean Series in Monaco, Genoa, Lake Garda and Ibiza. he National One Design Sailing Academy, in partnership with North U and Bill Gladstone are thrilled to be bringing our fleet of 10 Flying Tiger 7.5’s to BACARDI Miami Sailing Week as Leg 3 of our North U Regatta Experience.

The principal is simple. Many sailors would love to do a premier regatta like BACARDI Miami Sailing Week but are between boats, don’t own a boat or simply don’t want to deal with the logistics and costs of bringing their boat. Additionally, many feel that their game is not quite up to snuff to compete head to head. Our solution is that our fleet of Flying Tiger 7.5’s, powered by North Sails will be in the water, fully rigged, tuned and ready to race. THE DETAILS At 25 feet in length and only 2150 lbs with plenty of sail area this is one fast and responsive boat. With a ballast to displacement ratio of over 50%, heavy uncomfortable hiking is not necessary hence the “Gentleman’s sport” moniker. As the cockpit is over 14’ long the crew is able to perform all functions with plenty of room whether racing hard or out for a pleasure sail. The Flying Tiger 7.5 has a modern carbon rig with swept spreaders and no backstay, square top main, carbon boom and retractable carbon prod. The non- overlapping headsail is efficient making it easy to handle and the mast head asymmetrical spinnaker produces planning speeds at even moderate breeze. HOW TO SUCCEED IN MIAMI

ACARDI Miami Sailing Week is in a seasonal vortex. Warm enough to create tan lines, but be careful what you show. Winter tends to take its toll on the body. If you are from anywhere but Florida, this is no time to test your favorite sunscreen. Let the locals flex their bikini muscles. The rest of us still need to earn them. For additional enlightenment, I sought out an expert who both knows Miami and knows that life is meant to be lived. Multiple World Champion Willem van Waay was the top dog in the J/70 Class last year for good reason. Based in California, he’s been racing in Miami for 30 days a year for the last 15 years so he can answer pretty much any question. So I asked him the kind of questions that make a difference.

Driving tips? Miami is very international. Even the locals say that drivers in Miami follow the traffic rule of their former countries. Unfortunately, some of those countries do not have lots of rules! When the traffic light turns red, expect three or four more cars to fly through so be extra careful driving. Traffic can get especially tough if you are driving to West Marine or South Beach so choose the time to go there carefully. Parking is also fun. The BACARDI Regatta Village will be in the Dinner Key/SW 27th Avenue area in Regatta Park. There is a large public parking lot there. That is the good news. There is also parking in the US Sailing Center lot or in front of the yacht clubs on S. Bayshore Drive but it is limited. Please remember, although the warm breeze and the palm trees may make you think you are on a peaceful Caribbean island, Miami is a big big city so take your normal precautions. Even though you won that Rolex as US Yachtsman or Yachtswoman of the Year, please do not leave it in a visible place in your car. You will quickly learn why Uber is so popular in Miami.

Where do you eat? For lunch while sailing, I go to Milam’s Market and The Fresh Market in the Grove. But then for dinner, I love to eat and this area is packed with amazing restaurants with incredibly talented and creative chefs. My list of go-to places for the most part are mid-priced and completely off the hook in flavor/ratings/and consistently impressive plates. Almost impossible to be disappointed at any of these. My advice would be to jump in an Uber and be willing to explore to a few of the nearby neighborhoods. Don’t just get locked into pizza at New York Roma Pizza and draft beer at the Sandbar or Monty’s (as tasty and fun as that might be)

CONNECT HERRESHOFF MARINE MUSEUM GENIUS ON THE WATER

ver 60 significant boats are housed in this waterside Bristol, Rhode Island museum on the site of the original Herreshoff Manufacturing Company which was founded by John Brown Herreshoff (a blind boatbuilder) and his naval architect and steam engineer brother, Captain Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, an MIT grad. The museum logo itself tells a great story. It is the outline of RELIANCE, the 1903 America’s Cup defender. Designed by Capt. Nat, RELIANCE is reportedly the largest gaff-rigged cutter ever built. Her topmast sprit towered 199 feet 6 inches above the water; it took seventy-two men to race her; the square footage in her sails was enough for eight 12-Metres; her mainsheet measured 1,000 feet in length rolled up on a drum below deck; and she carried over 100 tons of lead ballast in her keel. The star of the Herreshoff Museum is a work of art one-sixth scale museum-quality model of RELIANCE 33’ in length and more than 37’ in height. Another nautical jewel hangs from the museum ceiling. Multihull boats had been around for 10,000 years but Capt. Nat set the bar higher when he turned a cat into a competitive racing sailboat. Look up and you will see a replica of AMARYLLIS. Larry Ellison, eat your heart out. This very first racing cat, won the 1876 Centennial Regatta. There was only one problem. AMARYLLIS led her nearest rival to the finish line by over 20 minutes. The boat was simply too fast. The result was that multi-hull sailing vessels were immediately banned from organized sailing competitions. AMARYLLIS was followed by TARANTELLA, also designed by Capt. Nat and patented in 1877. It was larger and faster than AMARYLLIS and became an outlaw on Long Island Sound. This would only be surpassed when the America’s Cup and Oracle moved these boats into the most competitive regatta in the world. Nowadays, go to any boat show, and you will see large and small cats designed for cruising and racing. Thank you, Capt. Nat. HMM Bill Lynn, President and Executive Director Bill Lynn reports that there are more treasures at the HMM including the Model Room, The America’s Cup Hall of Fame, the Gift Store, many mechanical and steam engine inventions on display and two films (one titled “Of Boats & Brothers” and the other covering the history of the America’s Cup is called “There Is No Second”. CONNECT WOMEN IN SAILING TODAY… THE SKY IS THE LIMIT

Major Milestones in Recent Women’s Sailing History 1987 ICSA began naming women to the “Women’s College All-American” list. 1988 – first women’s sailing medals established in the Olympic Games. 1989-90 Tracy Edwards’ Maiden – first all-female crew to competed in the Whitbread Race around the world. 1990, Kristina Farrar was the first woman to be named ICSA Coed All-American. 995- America 3 was first mostly-female team to compete for the America’s Cup. 2003 – Corrie Clement named first Women’s College Sailor of the Year sponsored by Quantum. WIM Series 2014 – first professional sailing circuit for women (only). 2015/16 – SCA competes in VOR in the high-performance V65. 2016 – Sally Barkow becomes the first female skipper with all-female crew to compete as a Tour Card holder on WMRT. 2016 – Sharon Ferris-Choat skippers the first all-female crew on the Extreme Sailing Series in the GC 32’s. 2016 – Volvo Ocean Race, GC 32 Extreme Sailing Series, ICSA match racing rules are written to incentivize or mandate inclusion of females onboard. Female-only divisions have accelerated the development of women in sailing and increased participation. Over the last 20 years, many college sailing teams have become majority-female. Divisions like Laser Radials and 49er FX’s accommodate smaller body sizes and are thriving. Match racing especially is a level playing field for women and men because the maximum crew weight allows teams to sail with an extra person, and smart women have an advantage!

We should celebrate the progress shown in the accomplishments above, but we need to admit that there’s a long way to go before we reach gender equality or parity in the sport of sailing: Women are under-represented and paid less in professional sailing industry. Young ladies are more likely to crew than skipper, often due to the encouragement of parents and coaches. Females can be less inclined to be aggressive and competitive. These qualities can be necessary for success, and shouldn’t be discouraged. How you can help … Encourage a positive “mentality of competitiveness,” to reinforce that females are entitled to athletic success and that good results are a byproduct of hard work. Help young women get rid of the shame associated with winning by being competitive or assertive. Let sailing be gender-blind; there is a negative implication when you say “go beat the boys”. Eliminate “first female trophies” that are consolation prizes. Women, get match racing! Match racing is the perfect outlet. It helps nurture the competitive spirit and allows competitors to be unapologetically competitive. Opportunities for all-female match races are abundant, and the path to the top - WIM Series or WMRT - is clear. Crew composition rules favor women who can sail with an extra person onboard and make up the extra body weight. Encourage young ladies to drive the boat, and don’t make a big deal of it when they’re good.

CONNECT A PREMONITION OF NEWPORT I

t was a stormy night in 1638, when a group of former Puritans, kicked out of Boston for troubling the peace of the commonwealth, sailed to northern Aquidneck Island. Roger Williams convinced them to settle in the area of his Providence Plantations. They purchased Narragansett Bay’s Aquidneck Island from the Narragansett Tribe. Prior to that time, Aquidneck Island was used primarily as a Narragansett hunting territory although it was probably a summer residence as well. In 1639, William Coddington moved south on Aquidneck Island to found Newport, with its excellent harbor, and some settlers followed him there. Do you see the key words? Troubling the peace, sailed, Narragansett Bay, summer residence, excellent harbor… How did they know that they were creating a sailing town where sailing would be both a hobby and a profession, Narragansett Bay would be the location of major regattas, everyone would want a summer residence from the Vanderbilts to international sailing teams and the excellent Newport Harbor would be the site of many “harbor burns” as victory laps are taken while sailors toast with rum or champagne. How did they know?

Where to sail? The 2016 World Match Tour in M32s raced on the east side of Ft. Adams while the Volvo Ocean Race brought thousands of spectators to watch the racing on the west side of Ft. Adams. The team racing regattas take place on the west side of Goat Island. From BACARDI Newport Sailing Week to the America’s Cup 12 Metres and more recently big boats race on the Rhode Island Sound. The Pell Newport Bridge looks down upon racing on both sides of the Narragansett Bay… south of the bridge, there are many races including the start line for the Around The Island Races (Conanicut Island which is the home of Jamestown). Beyond the bridge, the Bay is wide and open and is the location of many regattas including the 350 plus boats sailing in the Optimist New England Championship. It is up to the Race Committee to decide and many times they have to coordinate with the other clubs to determine their racing venue. Who runs them? Talk about a plethora of yacht clubs… Newport’s prestigious New York Yacht Club (Harbour Court) hosts regattas almost every weekend. Its view of the Harbor and the Pell Bridge cannot be surpassed. Ida Lewis Yacht Club has a friendly atmosphere and many sailing traditions, especially in running the popular Shields Class and 12 Metre races. Newport Yacht Club, the oldest club in Newport Harbor, dating to 1894, provides a welcoming environment for individuals and families with shared interests in yachting, traditions, seamanship and camaraderie. The incredible Sail Newport, New England’s largest public sailing center, is always the center of action and is the organizing authority for many regattas. Sail To Prevail, the National Disabled Sailing Program, is busy too with classes and racing. Newport Shipyard hosts regattas and parties including ones for the majestic 1930’s J Boats and the mega yachts with the “Candy Store Cup” and now home of BACARDI’s Sailing Week event. From the years of the America’s Cup to the Volvo Ocean Race Round The World, wherever you race or party, you will find it difficult to pick any other town that beats Newport as the Sailing Capital of North America.

CONNECT CARBON, CARBON EVERYWHERE

hese days, carbon fiber is everywhere. Engineers need the light and stiff material to accomplish their design goals. We are lucky enough to see the many places people are using carbon fiber. No longer limited to bikes and boats, this incredible material is used in many important industries. There are many reasons to use carbon fiber over legacy materials such as aluminum or steel. The most obvious reason is its high ratio of stiffness to weight. Steel is very stiff, but heavy. Aluminum is light, but not very stiff. Carbon fiber is more expensive than both so a designer must have a compelling reason to use it and one is fuel consumption. Airplanes have used carbon and other fibers for generations but we are only just now seeing full scale production of commercial aircraft in carbon. Boeingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 777X uses carbon fiber almost exclusively for the structural and shell components. The reduced weight of the airframe means less fuel consumption. Another common example of fuel consumption driving manufacturers towards carbon is in the automotive market. BMW is leading the way to replace metals with carbon fiber in their vehicles. Between BMW in Spartanburg and Boeing in Charleston, South Carolina is now a major center for composite manufacturing. More car manufacturers are sure to follow suit as the market and government require more efficient vehicles. The trend of replacing manual labor with robotic assembly and part handling is a mature one. The next phase in this shift is to speed up the robots but increasing motor size and energy consumption. But, this is not the most elegant way to accomplish this goal. Reducing the weight of the robot allows faster accelerations and quicker stops all with smaller motors. It also means less maintenance and longer lives. One such example is in satellite dishes. Carbon fiber satellite dishes are lighter and stiffer than their aluminum counterparts allowing the repositioning of the dish to be faster and more accurate without distorting the shape of the dish. This increases the strength of signal allowing you to stream movies on your yacht while being tossed about in heavy seas. A lesser known reason to use carbon fiber is its thermal properties. Carbon can be a fantastic thermal conductor often used to dissipate heat in gun barrels. Carbon fiber laminates can also be designed to have a zero coefficient of thermal expansion. This is important to anyone designing a highly tuned and extremely accurate measurement device for telescopes to track the movement of far-off stars or building metrology devices capable of measuring parts to the 1/10,000th of an inch. Not all uses for carbon fiber are sexy or cool built for their looks. The best parts are hidden within bigger assemblies that perform better than their legacy material counterparts. Though the cost of material is going to be higher, the value is the significant gains in performance due to the incredible properties of this advanced material.

CONNECT A MEDICAL EMERGENCY – WHAT’S YOUR PLAN? A TRUE STORY

here is nothing to equal the exhilaration of a day on the water but that can all change in a hurry with a medical event - and that requires a plan. That is NOT the time to begin questioning, ”what should we do”? There are resources: EMT, Coast Guard, Race Committee, competitors, and even spectators. Consider an accident that occurred a few years ago during the starting sequence of a race; one of a crew of three seriously injured his leg. Here’s the story – presented with the idea that we all should have a “plan”:

COMPETING BOAT – requested assistance for the injured person. 1 Contacted the Signal Boat. (Equipment on all boats should include waterproof VHF radios).

2 Identified the boat, injured sailor and requested assistance (Important: keep radio out of wind).

3 Described injury including site, level of consciousness, severe bleeding and possible bone injuries.

4 Gave boat’s location on race course. 5 Lowered sails to allow support boat to come alongside.

RACE COMMITTEE SIGNAL BOAT – coordinated the rescue of the injured person.

1 One person had previously been designated as the “Communications Officer” equipped with VHF radio and cell phone, just in case of an accident. (Neither the PRO nor the Boat Captain/Owner should be the Communications Officer). 2 Received call – location of boat, type and extent of injuries (no spinal injury). 3 Directed Support Boat to assist. 4 Determined if the person could be moved. 5 Called 911 on cell phone (Coast Guard monitors VHF16). 6 Determined what the closest dock was which an EMT vehicle could readily access. (In this case Miami’s Matheson Hammock was selected. Mercy Hospital is NOT a good choice – as they are not equipped to come dockside to remove an injured person). 7 Alerted 911 dispatcher of the injury and the location as identified above. 8 Contacted the landing facility so it could make preparations to facilitate the transfer. 9 Remained in communication with support boat.

SUPPORT BOAT – the role was ‘making things happen’. 1 Located boat and transferred injured party. (NOT as easy as it sounds, it takes many strong arms to transfer an injured sailor). 2 Began trip to designated land point – speed without compromising the safety of the injured person. 3 Crew made injured person as comfortable as possible, put in shock position (legs up, head down with compression on wound) and protected him from further injury. 4 Kept the signal boat informed of progress. When the support boat arrived at the dock the EMTS were standing by, with a stretcher, IV and other emergency equipment. This incident actually happened during a Regatta a few years ago – we are happy to report that all went well and the injured person recovered and returns to Miami every year for the spectacular sailing. The successful outcome of the event reinforces the importance of having a plan in a medical emergency.

Founded in 1887 by Commodore Ralph Middleton Munroe, Biscayne Bay Yacht Club is one of the oldest members-only yacht clubs in Florida. In 1932, the Club purchased its present clubhouse which continues to serve as its main facility. The Club promotes the sport of sailing on Biscayne Bay and is home for the Etchells Biscayne Bay Series, the Lime Cup Ocean Races and others. In 2017, BBYC will host and do race management for the J/70 class participating in BMSW. Commodore Charles Munroe, Jr. and RC Chair Bruce Harper are looking forward to a great regatta.
