BUNGALOW STYLE The Bungalow style gained popularity during the late 1800’s during the Arts and Crafts Movement. Bungalow design places a strong emphasis on a connection with the home and the outdoors. The Bungalow was the forerunner to the Craftsman homes of the early 20th Century. Some of the main differences between Bungalows and Craftsman homes are that Bungalows are more informal in elevation having massings which are between 1 and 1 1/2 stories compared to the Craftsman which is between 1 1/2 and 2 stories. The Bungalow design placed and emphasis on the use of local materials and because of this, the style is easily adaptable to different regions making it a good fit for any geographical locale.

CAPE COD STYLE
CAPE COD DESIGN ELEMENTS
The first Cape Cod style homes were built by English colonists who came to America in the late 17th century. They modeled their homes after the half-timbered houses of England, but adapted the style to the stormy New England weather. Over the course of a few generations, a modest, one- to one-and-a-half-story house with wooden shutters emerged. Reverend Timothy Dwight, a president of Yale University, is credited with recognizing these houses as a class and coining the term "Cape Cod."

COUNTRY STYLE Country style architecture also referred to as “Cotswold”, “Hansel and Gretel”, “English Country” and “Tudor” cottage gained popularity during the late 1920’s and 1930’s was evolved from the English Tudor style of architecture that was based on cottages built in medieval times in the Cotswold region of England.

This style of architecture was a response to the elaborate style of Victorian homes. Craftsman style symbolized a return to nature, simplicity and local building and craft traditions.

TUDOR STYLE English Tudor architecture was popular in the 1920s and 1930s and continues to be a mainstay in suburbs across the United States. Some English Tudor houses mimic architectural details from early 16th century architecture as well as late Medieval cottages and palaces.

IBERIAN STYLE Iberian-style homes can be closely compared to Moorish style architecture which originated in North Africa and Spain with its close ties to Islamic architecture. Iberian architecture shares a similarity with Spanish Mission architecture in appearance. Characteristic features of a Iberian-style homes include formal geometry in both the garden and structure design, stucco walls, sculpture, stone and/or wood carving used for architectural ornamentation, large arcades and archways, an emphasis on a central water feature , red clay tiled roofs or a roof that resembles thatch, and brightly colored accent tiles.

Monterey style is a combination of a two-story New England Colonial with a Spanish Colonial house. This style was made popular during the late 1800’s by Boston merchant Thomas Larkin in the town of Monterey, California. These homes are very similar in style to French Creole homes but have more Spanish flair.

PRAIRIE STYLE Prairie architecture was popularized in 1893 by architect Frank Lloyd Wright as a response to Victorian style of architecture which he found to be too boxed-in and confined. Prairie houses were designed to blend in with the flat, prairie landscape. This style is still very popular in the Midwest.
PRAIRIE DESIGN ELEMENTS General Design:
Characteristic features of a Prairie home include a low- pitched roof with wide eaves, boxy and symmetrical or low-slung and asymmetrical profile, brick or clapboard walls, horizontal lines, central chimney, clerestory windows and windows, doors and cornices with floral or geometric terra-cotta or masonry ornamentation around them. Prairie homes were usually made of plaster with wood trim or sided with horizontal board and batten.
