Dear Parents, I am always thankful for so many things at Bishop Montgomery, most of all our wonderful students, I hope that you pray daily for all of our students and teachers and that you’ll pray especially for our seniors as they await decisions from colleges during the months of March and April. The Class of 2017 is in the last semester of their journey here at Bishop Montgomery and we are so proud of them! I want to congratulate Markus Raad and An Nguyen who have been chosen as our Christian Service Award Representatives to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. They will be honored and receive their medals at a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Jose Gomez on Tuesday, March 20th at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Finally, my prayer for all of you is that the liturgical season of Lent continues to be a deeply prayerful time spent in anticipation of Holy Week. During Holy Week we prepare and anticipate the Risen Christ who is the source of our life and our salvation. How miraculous that the story of Jesus Christ does not end with the Crucifixion, but is fulfilled in the glory of the Resurrection. In His sacrifice we are transformed, not alone but in community. As I so often remind the students, we strive for sanctity together, we participate in our search for God with others, we share the work of being transformed. And so I share the following meditation by Cardinal Newman with you which speaks so clearly about what it means to be transformed by God’s grace. It is one of my favorite meditations:
God has created me to do Him some definite service; He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission— I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good—I shall do His work; I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it, if I do but keep His commandments. Therefore, I will trust Him. LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
As you know, it is customary in every school to practice safety protocols and we routinely instruct students with fire and earthquake drills. We also practice lock down drills in the event of an intruder on campus. In the interest of continuing to develop our safety program, we will continue to practice lockdown drills and further develop our active shooter protocol and student and staff instruction. None of us wants to talk about any such possibility, but the reality is that we have to be as prepared as possible for an event that would be unpredictable and require creative thinking by staff and students. To that end, administrative council met with Torrance Police Department during February, we have scheduled a meeting with Torrance Police Department and the Faculty on March 5th and that will be followed by a video presentation and classroom discussion regarding lock down and intruder protocol. The video and accompanying discussion would not just focus on school safety but safety in any public place in which the student finds him or herself during an emergency. We think it is important to broaden the discussion so that our students think about their safety in public places as well as how to keep themselves safe in a school situation. Prior to the student meetings, we will communicate with you about the content of the instruction as we are all partners in this effort. If you have any questions, please know that you can contact me or any other administrator, and we would be happy to speak with you.

As was mentioned last month, many local organizations are now publishing and distributing scholarship applications. Students who have earned high academic marks and are involved at BMHS and the community at large are strongly encouraged to apply for these grant awards. Bishop Montgomery has submitted GPA verifications electronically to the California Student Aid Commission. Hopefully, both you and your student have applied for and received a pin number to be used as the electronic signature for the FAFSA for online submission.

GRADUATION 2018 Graduation for the Class of 2018 will be held on Friday, May 25 in Knight Stadium. Admission to the ceremony will be by ticket only, and each graduating senior will receive nine tickets. These tickets will be distributed at graduation practice in May. Jostens will be on campus in March to distribute graduation announcements. All seniors will receive 10 graduation announcements as part of the senior graduation fee paid through SmartTuition. Seniors who have ordered extra graduation items (announcements, souvenir tassels, etc.) may also pick up those items. All outstanding balances must be paid in full for pick up. Questions? STUDENT DROP-OFF & PICK-UP PROCEDURES DROP OFF PROCEDURES Parents driving west on Torrance Boulevard: 1. When making a left turn into the west entrance onto campus may drive on to the campus. 2. There is no left turn into the east parking lot. 3. Please drive onto the campus and continue driving until you have arrived at the designated drop-off point located in the east parking lot. 4. There is no student drop-off in front of the school. Please drop-off students in the designated passenger drop-off points located in the east parking lot only. Parents will enter the East Parking Lot through the northeast entrance by the marquee. 5. Our safety officer are available to direct and control traffic Parents driving east on Torrance Boulevard: 1. When driving toward the campus, please do not drive onto campus. Parents are to drive east along Torrance Boulevard and enter the east parking lot when dropping of students in the designated drop-off zone. Students are not to be dropped-off on Torrance Blvd. Please note - U-turns are not permitted. The only legal place to make a U-turn is at the intersection of Prospect Avenue and Torrance Boulevard.

Exiting the east parking lot 1. The only legal exit out of the east parking lot is a right turn towards Palos Verdes Boulevard. All drivers exiting the east parking lot must make a right turn only. 2. Please do not merge to make a left on Henrietta, as attempting to do so is dangerous and causes delays for other parents attempting to exit.
Lastly, in the interest of our students’ safety, we also would like for you to remind your children to obey all traffic and pedestrian laws. Many students are crossing the street when the signal light is yellow or red and are not using the appropriate crosswalks. We have received phone calls from parents, faculty, and residents concerned over our students’ safety. Please remind your student to follow all traffic and pedestrian laws and to most of all pay attention to their surroundings. JACKETS Please remind your student that the only jackets permitted to wear during school hours are official BMHS jackets or a BMHS athletic team jacket. Students who choose to wear a jacket with a logo, graphics, or emblems not affiliated with BMHS or a BMHS athletic team will receive a violation.

PICKING-UP & DROPPING-OFF OFF-CAMPUS All parents should pick-up and drop-off their students on-campus. To avoid the last minute rush, we encourage you to arrive before 7:30AM. The traffic flow on Torrance Boulevard is heavier after this time and may affect how quickly you are able to exit the campus. If you decide to pick-up or drop-off your student(s) anywhere else, please refrain from doing so our neighboring businesses, apartment complex, or residential driveways as this creates an inconvenience for our neighbors. Please respect the property of our neighbors by refraining from moving trashcans, taking property, littering, or parking or pulling into our neighbors’ driveways. Also, please make sure to drop-off your student(s) in areas that are safe and legal. We have received many reports that there have been BMHS parents or carpools driving recklessly on Palos Verdes Boulevard and students are being dropped-off by their parents/carpool drivers illegally by the red curb zones, in front of fire hydrants or in the middle of the street. In the interest of safety for all pedestrians and drivers and as a courtesy to our neighbors, students should be dropped-off on campus. Students whose parents fail to comply with the pick-up and drop-off procedures will be dealt with on campus. The Torrance Police Department has also been contacted, and they have informed us that they will be citing drivers along Torrance Boulevard, Henrietta and Palos Verdes Boulevard. It is essential to give our neighbors the same respect and courtesy that we expect from each other on campus.
SWEATSHIRTS BMHS sweatshirts are the only permitted sweatshirts. They do not shrink, so please purchase a size appropriate for your student. No other sweatshirts are permitted and will be confiscated with disciplinary action to follow. During this spring semester, Seniors are permitted to wear an official, non-hooded college sweatshirt, crew or quarter zip, of the college they will be attending. PROM Prom is just around the corner. As per the Parent-Student Handbook pg. 22, “the school does not permit the renting of hotel rooms or other facilities for students’ use for activities before or after Bishop Montgomery dances... The school does not assume responsibility or liability for damages, loss of property, or injury caused when such rental agreements are incurred by students or their parents.” All students must fill out the Prom Bid when bringing a non-BMHS student to the dance. The Guest Pass must be signed by the Discipline Office & turned in to the Bookstore by the deadline. The bid must also include a signature from the dean of the guest student’s school along with a stamp of the school seal. The Deans reserve the right to refuse any non-BMHS student from attending prom. All students and their guests are required to bring and show a current, picture ID from his or her school. Please remember, you are responsible for the behavior of your student’s

DRESS CODE – PROM 2018 Please adhere to the following dress code for prom. Please do not assume any liberties with these guidelines when you or an invited guest purchase dress attire for the event. All BMHS and non-BMHS guests are required to conform to these guidelines. Anyone not adhering to these guidelines will be asked to leave and will not be permitted to enter the dance. If you are asked to leave, bid money will not be refunded as well as you may leave yourself open to disciplinary action from the Deans. BMHS reserves the right to refuse admittance to any person not properly attired. GENTLEMEN

A tuxedo or suit is required. Ties are required unless dress shirts with a mandarin collar are worn. Dress shoes are required. Please no earrings, sunglasses, hats, gloves, or canes.
LADIES
• Two pairs of earrings may be worn in the lower lobe. Sunglasses are not permitted. • The length of the dress should be in accordance with the stated uniform dress code guidelines for skirts and shorts as stated on page 33 of the BMHS Student Handbook. • Dress must be solid material throughout. Dresses may not show a bare midriff or contain cutouts, which expose the torso (front or back). • Fitted dresses may not be excessively tight. Dresses should be comfortable for dancing and sitting. • Neither backless nor strapless dresses are permitted. The back of the dress may not fall below mid-back. • Ladies are reminded that the display of excessive cleavage is inappropriate and unbecoming.

WINTER SPIRIT WEEK
The Bishop community celebrated Winter Spirit Week January 22 - 26, and it included a few fun activities for the week. Color guard and spirit squads kicked off the week with a lunch time performance. Students were invited to show their class spirit on class color day, and one highlight of the week was the BMHS faculty serving up meals at the fifth annual “McTeachers Night” at McDonald’s, sponsored by the senior class. Class volleyball games on Wednesday and Thursday brought classes together for friendly competition. The juniors took the championship this year, while classmates cheered them on. The week wrapped up with Student Appreciation and Black & Gold Day on Friday with cookies for the student body. Thanks to everyone for their spirited participation!
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION
The National Honor Society celebrates students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Bishop Montgomery’s 6th induction ceremony was held February 12, and we are happy to announce that 27 students from grades 10 through 12 were inducted. Congratulations to these students on this wonderful achievement. More information about National Honor Society can be found on the BMHS website under “Academics.”

This is an important time as students elect their student government leaders for next school year. Student government provides an excellent opportunity for students to hone leadership skills and take an active role in their school community.

Class officers: If your student is interested in running for class office, they should attend a mandatory informational meeting on Wednesday, March 7 at lunch in the Activities Office. Application packets will be distributed only at this meeting and will be due on Tuesday, March 13.

Bishop’s active club program continues to be a great way for students to become involved in student life. Club proposals for the 2018-19 school year will be accepted this spring. If a student(s) is interested in proposing a new club, he/she must attend a lunch meeting on Thursday, March 1 at lunch in the Activities Office. Students are responsible for defining the purpose and goals of the club, recruiting a faculty moderator, and should be prepared to use this as an opportunity to develop their leadership skills. They should be committed to making the running of this club a priority. Approval for all 2018-2019 clubs will be finalized by the end of March. Further details on dates and deadlines will be given in morning announcements.

Is your student interested in trying out for the BMHS Spirit Squad? If so, he/she must attend the informational meeting on Wednesday, March 7 at lunch in the Activities Office and pick up an application. Both new and returning members are required to attend this information meeting. Students should listen to morning announcements for dates and details.

Planning is underway for Spring Spirit Week March 19 – 23. BMHS looks forward to honoring our spring athletes, and will have more opportunities for students to show school spirit at Class Color Day and Black & Gold Day. Bishop Ambassadors is a leadership organization that promotes student involvement in marketing our school to prospective families. Bishop Ambassadors are actively involved in Back to School Night, Open House, HSPT Testing Day, Freshman Registration, Feeder School Visits and Shadow Days. Applications will be distributed this spring for the 2018-19 school year. Interested students should listen to announcements for more details on application dates and deadlines.
SENIOR ACTIVITIES
Specific information regarding senior events, including Senior Luau, Prom, Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation, is sent home in a detailed letter the beginning of March. Watch for your student’s letter and contact the Activities Office if you do not receive one. Please pay special attention to dates and deadlines so that your student does not miss out on these special senior activities. There are many upcoming activities this spring for all Knights! Please encourage your student(s) to participate in these upcoming events. Their involvement in these activities makes for a great high school experience and wonderful memories for years to come!

ANATOMAGE TABLE PROJECT
In November, a representative from Anatomage visited campus to speak to our science teachers and administration about the Anatomage Table. The Anatomage Table is the most technologically advanced dissection table for anatomy education. These tables are used in many colleges and medical schools, but very few high schools have one. Having one of these tables at BMHS will give our students an incredible learning tool. The Anatomage Table takes real anatomy and restores it digitally so that students can study and digitally dissect real cadavers without any chemicals, ventilation systems, clean-up, or anything else needed in traditional dissections. The table comes already equipped with multiple life-size human cadavers as well as the cadavers of many types of animals. There are curriculum and labs for classroom use already built in to the tables, or our teachers can create their own lectures and labs. Our students who are interested in becoming doctors, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, chiropractors, veterinarians, pharmacists, radiologists, physical therapists, athletic trainers, or any other career in the medical field will have an incredible educational advantage heading to college. Bishop Montgomery is dedicated to purchasing one Anatomage Table for use in multiple classrooms by multiple teachers (the tables are on wheels and can be moved easily from classroom to classroom). The total cost for one table is approximately $80,000 and Bishop Montgomery has already committed $23,000 toward the purchase of a table. We have also had several alumni in the medical field make gifts to support this project.

REFLECTION
During this Lenten season we continue to work on the three pillars of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. We challenge students, though, to go beyond the conventional. Do we try different forms of prayer? Do we change our words to ask for God’s will and not our wants? Do we reach for our phones in the morning or our prayers? In terms of fasting- do we try fasting from negative thoughts towards ourselves or others, or do we just think of fasting in terms of food. What a difference we could make if we fasted and cut out those behaviors that were holding us back. As for almsgiving, we are capable of giving so much more than our money. How do we give of our time and gifts?
PRAYERS
As a school community we continue to pray for peace in our communities, our cities, our homes, and most of all our hearts. We strive to stay true to our Lenten commitments. Thank you for your continued prayers for all of our students who have and will be attending retreats.

ARTS FEST IS OPEN TO ALL! In the Music area, Arts Fest is open for both Composition and Performance submissions. • Compositions can be in any style, for any combination of instruments and voices, and for any audience - singer/songwriter, church, movie soundtrack, video game music. • Performance can be in any style, and any combination of instruments and voices. Performance auditions are Tuesday, March 20 and Thursday, March 22 after school and are scheduled when the application is submitted. Encourage your student to stop by any art teacher’s room to pick up an application. Applications are due Friday, March 16. BATTLE OF THE BANDS 2018 - CASH PRIZES & FAME (AT SCHOOL)! As part of Spring Spirit Week, all bands and musical groups are invited to perform in the annual Battle Of The Bands. Applications are available from Mr. Hankey and are due Monday, March 19.

THE BMHS KNIGHT MUSIC DEPARTMENT IS HEADED TO JAPAN! On April 2, 2018, 27 students and chaperones are off to a fantastic eight-day tour of Tokyo, Kashiwa, Toyota City, and Hiroshima! KNIGHT MUSIC BOOSTER CLUB The Knight Music Booster Club represents the Band, Jazz Band, Drumline, Music Production, Video Production, and Music Ministry. Their meetings are usually on the same Monday nights as Athletic Boosters and Mothers’ Club at 6:00 pm in room 318 – additional meetings are scheduled as needed. BMHS LIBRARY AUDIO/VIDEO UPGRADES To better support the education and engagement of Bishop Montgomery High School students, BMHS is excited to announce newly installed audio and video equipment in the Learning Commons (campus library). BMHS has installed a 123” diagonal 16:10 motorized projection screen and a ceiling mounted DLP projector. As a supplemental display on the opposite side of the library, we have a corner mounted a 70” Sharp Aquos LCD (lovingly donated by Toyota!). Throughout the library, BMHS has placed four ceiling mounted speakers. Additionally, hidden in the ceiling is audio/video switching giving BMHS the ability to mirror the projector›s display to the LCD, and the ability to choose which display›s audio is being played throughout the room. Finally, BMHS has installed a system control panel next to the projection screen, and each display has an input panel with easy access for presentations. Stop by and see these improvements and upgrades!

Athletic Boosters DAMION MEDOZA SCHOLARSHIP The Mendoza Scholarship is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete. Any studentathlete wishing to apply must submit a 1-page essay on "what it means to be a student-athlete at Bishop Montgomery." Students should include a cover sheet that includes their name and current grade. Participation on a BMHS athletic team is mandatory to be considered for the scholarship. The scholarship is named in memory of former BMHS student Damion Mendoza, who passed away while still at Bishop Montgomery. He would have graduated with the Class of 1994. Arts Fest Fine & Performing Arts Contest Entry Form Bishop Montgomery High School students have the opportunity to participate in the Arts Fest Fine/Performing Arts Contest. To enter: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
All artwork must be appropriate, original, and created by the student. All music entries must be submitted on an audio CD or in an mp3 format and must sign up with Mr. Hankey in room 318. A separate Solo Competition Form must also be submitted. All video entries must be submitted on a DVD or via youtube to Mr. Haynes in room 205. All monologue entries must sign up with Ms. Moreau in TMH. All Poetry entries must be no longer than 2 minutes and must sign up with Mrs. Bagnell in room 315. Fill out this entry form and submit artwork by March 16, 2018 to Room 205. All entrants must have a recommending teacher. Please limit 3 entries per student. Fill out one entry form per artwork.
Prizes will be awarded for the following categories: 2-D Design (drawing, painting, etc.), 3-D Design (sculpture, ceramics, etc.), Photography, Graphic Design, Video, Poetry, Music Composition (original), Music Performance, Drama (perform a 2 min. monologue), and Religious (must have a Christian theme, open to all mediums). One winner from each category will receive a $50 prize. Entries will be judged by the BMHS Art Department and chosen entries will be displayed during the Arts Fest Week (April 23-26, 2018) and returned after the event.
