WELCOME The National College Creative Industries is committed to working with schools to provide opportunities for school leavers in the creative industries. With the growth of the creative sector there are a wide variety of careers available for independent and creative young people. Meeting industry demand to provide a diverse and highly skilled professional workforce to fill the sector skills gap and, by working with teachers and parents, we hope to inform and inspire pupils to be part of this exciting industry. The National College Creative Industries Schools Programme aims to shine a light on the broad range of backstage and off stage jobs as well as the training routes available to the next generation of creative professionals. The Schools Programme includes activities for pupils from Years 9 to 13, as well as parents and teachers.

THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES’ SKILL GAP In 2017, 30,000 new skilled workers will be needed to fill backstage and off stage roles in the UK, with an estimated shortfall of 6,000. (Creative & Cultural Skills, The Performing Arts Blueprint (2010))

Employers are struggling to fill creative roles, citing a lack of ‘job-ready’ applicants with the right experience. (Creative & Cultural Skills (2010/11), Impact and Footprint)

Nearly a quarter of creative and cultural businesses struggle to recruit for roles, with more than a third saying that this is due to the lack of the right skills. (Creative & Cultural Skills (2010/11), Impact and Footprint)

The industry recognises the need to provide more occupational pathways in the form of apprenticeships and practical training. There have never been more opportunities for young people looking to develop a career in the UK creative industry…

DROP-IN INFORMATION ADVICE & GUIDANCE SESSIONS Dates: Thursday 7th December 2017, 8th February, 8th March, 5th April, 3rd May, 31st May, 28th June Time: 4pm-6pm Location: National College Creative Industries The Information Advice & Guidance sessions will allow potential students to speak with experienced staff and get valuable advice on: • Choosing the right course that matches their career aspirations • What skills are required for a careers in backstage and off stage professions There will be an opportunity to have an interview on the day and secure their offer for September 2018.

CPD FOR TEACHERS Dates: Thursday 11th January Time: 10am – 7pm (optional seminars throughout the day) Location: National College Creative Industries Participants: Teachers looking to expand their technical skills and knowledge in creative events, including drama teachers and those responsible for school shows and events Content: • Training in technical aspects of staging, lighting, sound and event management

PSHE WORKSHOPS CREATIVE CAREERS INVESTIGATORS Dates: January Time: As arranged with the school Location: School site Participants: Year 9 pupils upwards thinking about career options Content: • Half-day workshop with the opportunity to try different employability skills and consider how these skills can be developed through school, extracurricular activities or subject choice

WORK PLACEMENTS We offer work placements at the National College Creative Industries of up to 15 hours for 20 pupils per academic year. Pupils learn about the employability skills required for a career in the creative industries as well as take part in many aspects of backstage and off stage operations. Work placements are based at The Backstage Centre, a commercially operated space for industry professionals. Purpose-built in 2013, the Backstage Centre is home to: • an 875m2 sound stage with state-of-theart grid system • recording studio featuring industrystandard equipment

• CAD suite for lighting, stage design and programming • dance studio • rehearsal and filming space Work placements can only be offered to schools where the National College has attended a school assembly and delivered a PSHE Workshop - Creative Careers Investigators event to prepare students for their work placement. Offer of work placements are subject to a successful interview.


SCHOOL AGREEMENT We are dedicated to providing highquality events for pupils, in order to give them a positive experience of college life, enhancing their knowledge of post-16 education and possible career options. Through the diversity of provision, we can equip your pupils with skills and opportunities that will develop their academic potential. What schools can expect from the National College Creative Industries: • invitations (letter or email) to events four to six weeks before the event date • a prompt response to requests • high quality activities suitable to the pupils’ age group • opportunities to meet current National College students

• accurate information about post-16 education • a copy of the risk assessment (if requested) • opportunities to feedback What the National College Creative Industries can expect from schools: • students to attend events once confirmed • provision of a list of students and staff for each event • for students to follow the college health and safety and behaviour policies • to ensure all students have the correct attire and equipment needed for events • for accompanying staff to engage in activities whilst supervising their students • to inform the college no later than seven days before the event, if unable to attend
