nick Presnell br mc p oa commu nit y oper ations m a nager Nick Presnell, a native of Boone, NC, is the new community manager for the BRMC Property Owners Association. While finishing his management degree, Nick visited BRMC on multiple occasions and expressed interest in working for the community. So it came as no surprise when we reached out to Nick to persuade him to manage our property. Nick will be responsible for the management and operations of community services and for the new neighborhood association for the “The Peaks,” as well as working with our team on infrastructure expansion, adding amenities and a village structure. Members will have improved accessibility as Nick will be located in the BRMC development office. “BRMC has a really unique sense of the larger community, more than any other club I’ve seen, and I’m glad I get to be a part of developing it to its full potential.

Most people who choose to live in the mountains have an adventurous spirit. What many people find extreme, we “mountain folk” characterize as common. Our passion and desire to live with an adventurous attitude, to explore our curiosity, and to take risks and dare to expand our awareness define the very person, and even the families, who chooses to make a place like Blue Ridge Mountain Club their home. This is the very spirit of living on the edge that I appreciate most about our home and our members. Being in the mountains offers a sense of inspiration and freedom I can’t seem to find anywhere else. The mountains give me a place to think, to be introspective, and to move my body in ways that challenge me, push me, and drive me harder and farther than I dreamed I could go. But perhaps an even more revelatory characteristic of mountain living is the sense of retreat I have by living here. I always have been and always will be a “mountain guy.” I knew from a very young age that I was meant to live in the mountains. Not many people have been as lucky as me to live my dream. Blue Ridge Mountain Club can be that place all adventurers are seeking and I am certain the families who move to BRMC feel that way as well.

by Jim Pitts

This year, we’ll have 25% to 30% of our residents choosing to make Blue Ridge Mountain Club their permanent home. This trend is unique for a destination community and represents a common thread for those with an adventurous spirit — that families want to live where they vacation and Blue Ridge Mountain Club resonates with them as a perfect place to live and play. They come here to connect with their families and friends, while maintaining the freedom and sense of retreat that escaping to the mountains affords. It’s a liberating conclusion for everyone who harbors a sense of adventure just waiting to be unleashed. And for people like me, I believe the only thing you need to embrace that adventure is the will to do it.

The View Showstopping views are the natural hallmarks of BRMC and a source of pride within the community. Our residents love the feeling of living on ridgelines as spectacular as the Blue Ridge Parkway with views beginning the moment you enter the community – sweeping panoramas of majestic mountain peaks and the lush, cloud-cradling valleys resting below. In addition to our adventurous spirit, the views at Blue Ridge Mountain Club set us apart from every other residential destination community in the High Country. And we do our best to take advantage of them by finding ways to enhance and improve the view experience. Our Cliff Dweller concept home, featured in the next article, is our latest innovation to truly blur the lines between indoors and outdoors and make our “unparalleled views” the focal point of the living experience. Building a home on the edge of the view will bring the land into the home and the home into the land, blending the two seamlessly for an extraordinary and uncommon encounter. We are committed to “living on the edge” in every sense and the Cliff Dweller home takes that idea to a new level! Natural, awe-inspiring beauty is considered the “standard” at BRMC. From sunrise to sunset, the landscape is ever-changing but one thing remains the same. The views will take your breath away. Every single day.

The Cliff

Dweller A NEW HOME CONCEPT

6

BRMC has worked with Hutch Johnson on multiple occasions to design several different homes in the community. Most recently, BRMC worked with Hutch in the Watson Gap Ridge neighborhood to create a very unique collection of thoughtfully positioned homes that are on very challenging terrain, taking advantage of some of the most breathtaking views at BRMC. Based on his experience, Hutch was the obvious choice when BRMC decided to explore a new home concept called the Cliff Dweller, another residential breakthrough being offered at Blue Ridge Mountain Club. A residential designer with architecture degrees, Hutch has been designing custom homes since he was a sophomore in college. Initially working in and around The Triangle of North Carolina, Hutch now designs homes up and down the East Coast. In fact, many of his clients love his designs so much that he’s created multiple homes for the same family. He attributes much of his success to the team approach, working hand in hand with clients to realize their vision.

DESIGNING HOMES “ON THE EDGE”

MAKING THE SPACE ENJOYABLE

HUTCH: Blue Ridge Mountain Club has many steep homesites with views that are unbelievably stunning, but up until now, they’ve also been inaccessible and difficult for buyers to visualize. So when Jim Pitts came to me to design this new series we’ve coined “Cliff Dweller,” we knew it was critical to incorporate both the landscape and the views. The result is a long, shallow home with glass running through nearly every room. It makes for some of the most dramatic views I’ve ever seen. The relationship between indoors and outdoors will be incredible.

HUTCH: In order to work with the land, the Cliff Dweller homes will have unique angles and topography that can lead to fun and exciting opportunities for creating innovative, livable spaces. You have to think through furniture placements, maximizing the glass and longer, thinner spaces, without sacrificing the views or the indoor/outdoor experience between the home and the covered back porch. Additionally, the arrival experience will be dramatic as you walk through a beautiful courtyard garden through the front door to awe-inspiring views. Creating this home has really allowed me to fuse my engineering abilities with my own aesthetic sensibilities.

A LIFE LESS ORDINARY HUTCH: From the minute you walk through the front door, you immediately recognize the impact the view of the landscape and mountains has on the residence. Every room is uniquely positioned to take advantage of the view and since the home is only one room deep and back-dropped with windows, the experience affords families views that encompass both the sunrise and the sunset. Where else can you experience a life where “extraordinary” is part of the package? Every living space is designed to be private and communal at the same time. One area flows seamlessly into the next. We’ve tried to make this home a place that fits every family’s living and entertaining needs.

THE BRMC DIFFERENCE HUTCH: We moved from Blowing Rock to BRMC and have found some of the most wonderful people. We love everything the club has to offer, but it’s the people who live here who really make the difference. We’re actually going to build a bigger home so our children can be here more often. It’s where our family comes back to connect. To me and to my family, Blue Ridge Mountain Club is truly extraordinary.
