thepublishers There’s nothing like walking into one of your favorite coffee shops only to be told there’s no coffee. Or power. Or internet, thanks to a power-related outage from the ice storm the day before. It’s a minor Problem of the First World but still a problem, considering just hours ago, downed trees and power lines stranded the writer for an hour or two at the nearest watering hole. Flanked to my right by a group of Japanese tourists, I flipped open my laptop at the bar to download an adult beverage and a last-minute ad. Surely, I wouldn’t have to order another drink. I may be a reckless publisher but I am a semi-responsible mom and dinner was still up in the air. Surely, the road and electric crews would be done by now? It’s amazing the fantastic truths you tell yourself at a bar. As I turned onto the road, a nice burly man in an orange truck turned me around and I immediately realized my error: I should have at least tried to bribe my way through by gifting this fine man a full growler. So, over the hills and through the woods, back to my house I went, dodging collapsed limbs on a windy gravel backroad. At least I could get

home, unlike my friend who had sent me a selfie wearing her husband’s motorcycle helmet because a large pine had fallen, blocking her driveway. Nothing, I’ve assured the kids, nothing will prevent a mother or a Santa from making it back home, even in bad weather. Even so, I told Tommy he had better warm up the oven because it suddenly felt like a frozen pizza night. With the kids tucked in (mommy may or may not have done some eggnog-inspired sloppy yoga with her daughter in the living room), the adults began the holidays a few days early, feasting on peppermint bark amid the sound of a generator threatening to roar. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Wine Tasting Terms: Nostalgia I end this year of wine tasting terminology with one final term: nostalgia. But before your mind flits fast down Rueful Road, conjuring images of Lancers and Mateus, let me gently steer it clear, as those aren’t quite what I had in mind. Rather, the nostalgic feelings a wine can produce, which of course will be different for each person—and can certainly include the beautiful amber nectar that is Mateus. Some wines are essential to our holiday experiences, whether it’s the obligatory flute of champagne, the big Napa Cabernet or, for me, Chambolle Musigny. What these personal choices do is more than compliment food and make our taste buds rejoice; they connect us to loved ones past and present, to experiences past and present, and satisfy us in ways beyond what the oenophiles say we should taste and smell. I don’t know which special wine will tap into your personal holiday memories, but the following are a few nostalgic Basics favorites. Marie Kelly opts for big California

Cabernets. Not only are they chewy and dense, but they remind her of her beloved brother John in New York who always brings a couple bottles whenever the family gathers together. St. Supéry Cabernet, Napa 2015- $39.99. Mae Collins Tyree favors a demi-sec Vouvray for pairing with the wide range of dishes we find around the holidays (I heartily agree) and also just because, “It tastes so good!” Clos de Vigneau, Vouvray, $18.99. For red, her choice harks back to time spent recently in Provence with Anne and Frederic Grasset, and nostalgia for a different mentality of being, a slower pace of life, and unrivaled kindness. Château de Ségriès, Côtes du Rhône, 2016 (vintage of the century in the Rhône.) $14.99 Cheryl and Rose hail rich, fruitdriven, velvety California Pinot Noir. Diora, La Petit Grace, 2016 – from Monterey (the place we all have second homes) this wine is all of the above and more. $28.99 Cheryl also loves Bodega Pico’s Loteta when it comes to value/bang for buck. A rich, smooth blend with lots of big fruit notes. $13.99 Since Despina is nostalgic for

her home country of Greece, she’s including some bottles of Greek wine at her table. Gavalas, Katsano, $29.99 Floral aromas with lemon blossom—exactly the scents you’d expect wafting about Santorini. Chef David goes traditional with a Premier Cru Chablis for white, Domaine Chantemerle, Fourchaume, $38.99. Nothing quite rivals the flinty mineral notes and complexity of a Premier Cru Chablis. For red, Château de Beaucastel (we’ll all be at David’s for Thanksgiving), in this case, Coudelet de Beaucastel, Côtes du Rhône, 2016. $32.99 Notes of blackberry jam, herbs de Provence, black pepper, leather and plum. Sallie and Rosie vote for Elena Panteleoni’s mystical Barbera della Stoppa, 2009 $38.99 - Nostalgia perhaps for past trips to Italy, past lives in Italy, whatever the reason, the wine is earthy, yet fruity, bold and unique. Notes of sour cherry and barnyard. And Kristin, who just turned 21, loves Max Ferd Richter Riesling. And who wouldn’t? As Kristin explains, it’s slightly sweet, without being cloying, very clean and pure. You bet. $16.99

Bryant Jackson’s day job is at Hill Top Berry Farm and Winery but off the clock, he’s the king of the cowboy fast draw, competing as the

Kopperhead Kid. DECEMBER DECEMBER 2018 2018

Blue Ridge LIFE

DECEMBER 2018

Though he’s not as fast as the speeding bullet that shoots out the barrel of his Taylor & Company .45 Ranch Hand revolver, as his stage name implies, the Kopperhead Kid draws his gun just as quickly as a copperhead can coil back and bite. “I react to the light.” The light he’s talking about is a bulb on a crude-looking metal target rigged to a timer. When the bulb flashes, out comes the Kopperhead venom. “That’s where all my speed is. My hands are fast but you’ve got to be able to react to that light quickly.”

Bryant wasn’t born with a Colt in his hand but somehow the sport found him, he tells me from the patio over at Hill Top, overlooking a hill of blackberry vines that have been picked for the wine he helps make. Though it’s tied to the aesthetic of the Old American West, cowboy fast draw as a sport dates back to the mid 1950’s, the Golden age of television westerns. Drawing your gun quickly from a leather holster made for good television and because of that, actors needed coaches and trainers who were good at teaching that style of gun slinging. An Oklahoma stuntman by the name of Dee Woolem invented the first fast draw timer, holding the first competition in 1954.

Two generations later, 26 year-old Bryant says he is in his third year involved in the sport, and is already making waves among the old timers (let’s just say guys in their 40s and 50s are considered part of the young bunch). They were skeptical, perhaps intimidated, by the young gun, who was hoping to better his time. “Your reaction speed is your reaction speed,” they’d tell him at the practice range. “It is what it is. You can’t get any better.” But they were talking to a young man who wrestled in high school and if any sport trained him for fast draw, it was wrestling. There was that one time his coach put him in a higher weight class at the last minute, pitting him against a wrestler with years and pounds on his side. At 5 feet 10 inches, Bryant weighed in at a svelte and wiry 142 lb. continued on page 14

“He was huge. It came down to who had more heart. He had more experience but I wasn’t giving up either.” They took it to the third round and like a scene out of an old western where two guys are brawling on the ground, one of them just gave up. “[It’s the] same thing in fast draw. I was inexperienced but I’ve got a lot more heart than most people. I put everything I have into it … You can’t blame anyone but yourself.” So he took that attitude and brought it to his first big competition in July 2016, the Virginia State Championship where he placed 29th in a field of 61. By the time he competed at this year’s World Championship in Fallon, Nevada, he set a new world record for speed, beating the 5-time and current world champ in the Traditional World Champion title, putting him at 17th overall in the world. The time from drawing his pistol to hitting that target? We’re talking fractions of a second. The Kopperhead Kid says he shoots a 0.150. “That’s my average reaction to a light.” If he “misses the light,” he slows down to between 0.300 and 0.350 a fraction of a second. Notorious for gameday rituals, athletes are. A favorite playlist, a lucky shirt. For Bryant, get that boy a bird.

“The only think I am kinda serious about is eating chicken. I know it sounds weird but I swear, eating chicken is like the best thing to eat before you shoot. Don’t eat bread, don’t eat carbs. Eat chicken.” Photo by Anegla Harris

The world of Cowboy Fast Draw is a small one and Bryant Jackson is one of its younger members. He entered his first competition in 2016 and has quickly earned respect from the sport’s elders. Jackson practices often at a range with the Grandview Gunslingers, a club based in Bedford.

Life isn’t always as simple as eating chicken and shooting fast. Is it ever? Right now, competing in fast draw competitions is a hobby and Bryant’s enjoying it. But he’s also a young man with a wife and dreams of a place roomy enough for a horse or two. The college thing has been a windy road that put him at jeopardy of majoring in Overthinking. At one point he was convinced he wanted to deliver babies, if it weren’t for a career epiphany he had while chatting with a doctor. “You’ve got to be okay with losing kids,” the doctor told him. “I can’t. I won’t be able to do it. I’ll turn into a mess.” Major in History? That sounded promising. “But I didn’t want to teach history to high school kids.” He acknowledges overthinking gets you in trouble, paralyzing you at fast draw and at life. So take a deep breath, and react to the light.

Reacting to the light of this metal target is what Bryant Jackson has trained himself to do, at an average speed of 0.150 seconds. Cowboy Fast Draw competitors opt for wax bullets instead of lead. Bryant hand loads the rounds he uses.

Bryant answered a request on Facebook earlier this year seeking part time tasting room help at Hill Top. The owners liked him so much, that job morphed into a steadier gig. Bryant now “does a little bit of everything,” from bottling, to berry picking, to running a weed whacker. He’s a semester away from finishing his Associate’s in Business Administration but he seems to be hitting the range more often than his books. The sound of a truck driving up the gravel road to the winery signals the day’s first customer, and an appropriate time for me to hit the save button on this interview. Bryant’s back-andforth on the rocker slows to a stop. “I love where I’m at, I love what I’m doing. But ultimately, I know it’s not my true calling.” Spoken like a true cowboy, or maybe a copperhead itching to shed its skin. BRL

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, Should I take a multi vitamin daily? The vitamin and supplement industry in the USA is a very big industry. To tackle the benefits and harms of supplements is far beyond the scope of this little column, but we can try to look closer at the standard adult multivitamin. What follows are some general statements that apply to the regular healthy adult population about taking multivitamins. The first message is that the primary way we should all get our vitamin needs is through a healthy diet that includes lots of varied vegetables and fruits. The benefits of eating these whole foods far outweigh anything that can be swallowed in a pill. Fiber, vitamins, nutrients, minerals, healthy calories, satisfying the hunger craving, as well as experiencing enjoyable taste all come from eating these natural foods! But, many people would like to take a multivitamin, seeking health benefits. Generally speaking, there

have not been any good studies that prove great benefit or harm to a healthy adult from taking a multivitamin. Some people, seeing no proven harm, will take a multivitamin thinking, “it may help and it can’t hurt”– which is a reasonable approach. Others will steer clear to avoid a pill that may not really be helpful – also reasonable. Certainly there are health problems that dictate a need for higher doses of certain vitamins. I would recommend that you follow your doctor’s advice if you have one of those. So, taking a multivitamin or not really comes down to a personal choice. But, we all would do well to make sure that we are eating healthily first. As Dr. Cole often says, “A lousy diet with vitamins is still a lousy diet”. Dr. Steve Schmitz is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. Holiday “Honey-Do” List! A list of repairs that can protect your home and family

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

With gift lists, grocery lists, and guest lists, it just doesn’t seem like the time to ruin the festivities and introduce another to-do list. In reality there is no better time than the holiday season, when family and home may be closest to your heart, to slip in one more check list to protect your home, investment, and the ones you love. Plain and simple, it makes good sense (and cents) to routinely perform and invest in these home maintenance tips. • Test fire extinguisher pressure gauges. If the pressure is low, recharge or dispose of it and get a new one. • Test smoke detector sensors and alarms. Batteries should be changed once or twice a year. •Test carbon monoxide detectors. Carbon monoxide is the number one cause of poisoning deaths in America. If you have only one detector, place it in a hallway outside

the bedroom mounted 14 inches off the floor to face height on the wall, but never where there is a draft. • Test auto reverse safety feature on garage door openers. A garage door is often the heaviest and largest moving equipment around the home. Consult the owner’s manual for maintenance and lubrication tips. • Test the pressure and temperature relief valve for proper operation. A temperature setting of 120 to 130 can economize utility bills. An operable temperature relief valve (TPR) can prevent a possible explosion by releasing pressure buildup in the water heater. • Check water purification and water softener filters. Excessive levels of calcium and magnesium in hard water can lead to buildup in water heaters and eventually clog pipes and diminish plumbing efficiency. • Clean and freshen your drains. To keep sinks running freely, throw

Marlo Allen

a handful of baking soda into the drain and follow it with hot water OR pour in 1 cup of vinegar and let it sit for 30 minutes; chase down with very hot water. • Degrease and freshen your garbage disposal. Turn on the disposal and throw in ice cubes made from equal portions of water and vinegar. • Clean range hood filter. Remove and clean the metal mesh filter that keeps grease from getting into the ductwork. Soak in hot water and liquid dish detergent and rinse clean with hot water. • Clean appliances. Use an allpurpose, handy dandy cleaner made from 1 teaspoon borax, ½ teaspoon washing or baking soda, 2 teaspoons white vinegar, ¼ teaspoon dishwashing liquid, and 2 cups hot water. • Remove and clean range burners and keep range top clean as spills occur. Immediately sprinkle food

spills with table salt. This will absorb the moisture and make the spill easier to clean up when the range top cools. • Clean and brighten tile and grout. Try hydrogen peroxide OR a solution of 1 part water and 1 part vinegar along with a new hard toothbrush. • Clean and replace furnace and air conditioner filters. Filters are cheaper by the dozen. Label each filter by month to serve as your monthly installation reminder. Once you have made your lists, and checked them twice, pause and just enjoy spending time with your family and friends. SHIPMAN

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by YVETTE STAFFORD

If Mattie Lucinda Browning was your mother, Christmas morning meant new shoes and a steaming pot of

OYSTER STEW Meals made by the family matriarch, Mattie Lucinda Browning, are the inspiration behind a forthcoming cookbook compiled by “Miss Lou” Wooten Fitzgerald. They include a treasured oyster stew recipe, a traditional Christmas morning meal. To add this to your Christma list, email grannylou4945@ gmail.com.

Hovering over the stove in her Mrs. Claus apron, Miss Lou (Mary Louise on her birth certificate) is stirring up a Wooten family tradition that begins with the lipid of all lipids. “I put a stick of butter in the pan and pour the oysters and let them stew until they curl,” she explains from the kitchen of her family’s cabin in Shipman. We are weeks away from Christmas morning but Miss Lou is already in the spirit. She shows me a picture of her late mother, Mattie Lucinda Browning — the inspiration for a forthcoming family cookbook — in a kitchen wearing an apron with poinsettias on it. Miss Lou stops to pour me a splash — just a splash — of champagne in a green plastic cup. It’s 2 PM and the days have gotten dreadfully shorter in this hollow. “And then I put salt and pepper, and then ... a pint of heavy cream, and in this pot I put a half a gallon of milk also.” continued on page 26

continued from page 25

Admittedly, oyster stew wasn’t Miss Lou’s favorite growing up — her mother would always have a hot dog for her on stand by — but it’s woven so deeply into her family’s fabric that she had to include it in the collection of recipes she’s publishing, Wooten-Browning Family Cookbook. Certainly not the first person tasked with typing faded cursive recipes into legible print, Miss Lou joins the club of nostalgia-driven baby boomers driven to preserve recipes of the past. Over in the living room, baby brother Mervel is watching the UVa game with a borrowed heart — he became a transplant recipient some years ago. His son and his wife just left the cabin with their young children after an afternoon of chopping trees in the woods. These are the reasons Southern women with gray hair cobble together recipes and stories. continued on page 28

“Something just came over me,” she tells me, as the steam begins to rise off the pot. “I have got to do this or it’ll never get done.” Sure, she and the other women in the family had tossed around the idea of a cookbook before but that was 30 years ago. Easter dinners are another Wooten family tradition and it was at this year’s gathering that Miss Lou announced her decision to publish the book. Pretty fitting since Miss Lou was born on Easter, 73 years ago. The year was 1945 and the Wootens didn’t have electricity or running water in their Craigtown home but they did have Aunt Eva Brown, a midwife and dear friend of Miss Lou’s mother. “Daddy went to get Aunt Eva and she was waiting on her front porch because she saw the lantern come on and daddy was coming to get her.” As the story goes, since her oldest sister was already nicknamed “Bunny,” that name was out of the running in spite of the Easter birthday. So her name became Mary Louise. “Don’t know where it came from. But supposedly a lady in Shipman named me.” Come Christmas, Miss Lou says daddy would bring back a cedar from their property. The kids would always want a big fat one but their house was a small house and so a skinny tree would have to do. But when it came to oysters, daddy — who worked at the American Cyanamid plant in Piney River — always made sure they had plenty. “Ever since I could remember, [momma] did oyster stew for breakfast and throughout the year, oyster season. I do remember daddy buying them in gallons from the Moon store. You had to order them around Thanksgiving or so to get them. I love them fried but the stew is not my favorite. I’m making it today because it reminds me of my mom and the seven of us kids being all happy for Christmas.” It helped that the seven Wooten kids were a humble bunch and didn’t expect an avalanche of gifts on Christmas morning. With the oyster stew heating

28

Blue Ridge LIFE

DECEMBER 2018

on the cook stove, the kids would rise early and usually each get a new outfit to wear along with a pair of shoes. The shoes — cowboy boots were Miss Lou’s favorite — would be sitting outside of the box and in that shoe box, Santa would leave treats for the kids. “We would get an orange and a banana and some grapes and a candy cane, a little bit of hard candy like Christmas candy, and that’s what we got in that shoebox. Momma was famous for counting, making sure everybody got the same amount. No one got any more or less than the other.” The stew is ready and there are just enough snowman bowls to pass around. After ripping open a crinkling sack of Food Lion oyster crackers, we pause for Mervel to say the blessing. Breaking slightly from tradition, Miss Lou forgets about the hot dogs and instead dives in with a spoon, lifting the hot stew to her lips. “I do like the oyster crackers once they’re soggy,” Mrs. Claus giggles, proving once again that a stick of butter makes things better. The sun is trying to catch up to the pace of Addison Johnston, who is ahead of the game with two men and two cups of coffee. There’s fire inside a wood stove he keeps near the shed — rusty from sitting outside in the elements — and it’s beginning to glow, like the mountains waking up to the west.

“Why do I get up?” Addison says, repeating the question I just asked him. The yellow sun is beginning to rise and the hills are turning pink. “First of all it’s the grace of God. That’s why I get up and look at this beautiful view every morning and thank the Lord for giving me another day here on Earth. It means everything.” One of his guys, a young man in a black hoodie, throws another log into the outside stove. But first, more coffee. “You put what you want,” Addison tells me in the kitchen, as he plugs up a white plastic kettle. It’s been years since I’d seen a can of Maxwell House and I tell Addison I’ve forgotten the ratio for instant coffee. “Two small ones depending on how strong you want it,” handing me a spoon. “I put a little bit more in mine but that will make it pretty strong right there.” Two and stir, wish a dash of hazelnut creamer.

“Let me check on my wife, see if she needs anything.” Norma drives a school bus but not today. She threw out her back playing with a grandkid which means someone else is driving her route this morning. Apparently she’s doing okay because Addison comes back. “Want a honey bun or donut stick?” It’s a bit early for that, I tell him. Plus, his guys are waiting and the sun is catching up. So we take a few more sips and one more look at that killer view he’s got. Addison clears his throat and gets a little religious. “It gives me the ability to work and the ethic that He gives me each day. Even though I get mad and cuss and carry on at times — I’m a sinner — but God’s first. I don’t care. God’s first.” God, Norma, Maxwell House and his work crew, in that order. Addison fires up the mill, a large blue behemoth of steel responsible for the piles upon piles of chopped firewood behind him. Tip, Addison’s beagle, respects the power of this machine and keeps a safe distance. The girl can bark but the mill can roar. A log is fed down a chute before a chainsaw blade is lowered, severing it clean, sawdust shooting out the side towards the ground like fireworks. Addison feeds and chops, bearded John from Buckingham splits the logs, and Dakota in the hoodie feeds the smaller pieces up a conveyor that then drop into a pile below. Today is Wednesday, tomorrow is Thursday, the day before guests begin checking into their condos at Wintergreen Resort because after all, leaf peeper season is peaking. The view from Addison’s perch is nothing short of majestic, an early Christmas gift.

“Campbells Mountain and the Parkway, to the right,” he shows me, his arm outstretched like a guide. “Your house is over here. The way the bird flies, not far away at all. That’s big The Priest, that’s little The Priest, Three Ridges, and Big Piney over here.” All in all, Addison and his family – immediate and extended – are sitting on roughly 150 acres, their story predating that of the Resort’s. In 1969, a big chunk of land, known as The Big Survey, was purchased by investors and within a few years, developers began carving out plans for a ski resort. By 1975, Wintergreen was operating eight slopes and three chair lifts off that mountain. As skiers and tourists started streaming into the Rockfish Valley, on the other side of the ridge — a world away — Addison and Norma were coming of age. “I was 15 she was 13. We come from my parent’s house up here and we were looking at the mountain and she says, ‘I’d love to have me a house up here one day.’” Up here where the views remain largely untouched, a farm house sitting at the bottom of this panoramic Blue Ridge bowl. One side of Addison’s property line abuts a pumpkin patch. The site of their future home was covered in brush, but for youngsters in love, it was perfect.. “[Norma] is 54 now so 20 years later … it came true.” As you can judge the age of a tree by its rings, you can judge the wear and tear on a man by his hands. I catch a few cracks but Addison is gesticulating so fast I ignore them. He started making money working for a building contractor in Charlottesville. “I was just pushing a shovel and I started climbing the ladder,” he says, motioning that career ladder climb, which looks much like a bear scrambling up a tree. Or a young dad chasing kids. They’re all grown now and Addison’s free to focus on the rush of firewood season. After he had struck out on his own, and knowing he’d be delivering wood all over that Resort, Norma got him something better than a pack of business cards. “My wife got me this jacket years ago,” he said, pointing to the patch, embroidered with his name. “She said, ‘You need people to know you.’” continued on page 35

A VDOT dump truck in its former life, Addison Johnston’s orange Mack truck hauls tons of wood up and down the mountains this time of year. In order to efficiently move firewood up several flights of stairs, Addison welded together a bracket with a pulley capable of pulling a load to the top. For more info, call 434-485-4068.

Delivery Day If people didn’t know this man then, they know him now. Hauling loads of seasoned wood in the trademark orange dump truck — a VDOT hand-me-down — Addison is unmistakable. He and his guys are parked outside Dobie condos on a Thursday morning, the calm before the Friday guest check-in storm. “Work smarter, not harder,” Addison preaches, as he shows me a rig he’s welded together. Working hard would be running up arm loads of firewood up several flights of stairs to the racks that sit outside the condo doors. Working smarter means running up to the top with a pulley and lowering a canvas wood hauler to the ground, where his crew can fill it. Filling this row of condos takes not quite an hour before Addison hops back into the truck to park outside another building. It’s when he takes his gloves off to tear into a ziplock bag of leftover Halloween candy (I took an Almond Joy) that I notice his hands. Worn to the nubs, some of them are. Half of his fingers are taped up. “It’s been tough. Yes it has.” showing them to me only because I asked. “I didn’t bandage them up [yesterday] morning but they crack open so bad, Yvette, they bleed on the ends and stuff. You can see where they healed and re-cracked. It’s tough.” But no one ever told Addison it would be easy. In some ways, he and Norma — who is thankfully on the mend — are still clearing brush off the hillside worlds away from this ski resort. But if anyone can warm a home and the keep the coals burning, it’s the man in the big orange dump truck that gets up before the sun does. BRL
