thepublishers Not much wakes me up once I’ve settled into a hard sleep. But the other night a skunk we’ve seen on the driveway marked its territory just outside our bedroom window and I shot up like a Jack-in-The-Box. “They’re so cute and cuddly!” Peyton told me later that evening on the porch as the critter boldy walked around the flower bed and over the walkway. There’s not much a mom can or should do when she’s armed with a canned beverage cradled in a Koozie. Cute and cuddly. Such are the words of a little girl who slept through the great chicken slaughter a few years back in which a skunk was to blame. But heeding those words, I went to the shed and dug out the dusty – not so trusty – humane trap. In went Peyton’s half eaten chicken tender. Nothing ate it. I mean, I am not lying to you when I say that these are the best tenders. We get them at the gas station up the road from us. By day 3, the bugs were feasting on the meat so I fed the trap some hard boiled eggs the kids had decorated. Yes, we know it’s not Easter. Something most definitely ate the eggs but the trap obviously didn’t

live up to its name. So that evening, I armed myself with a projectile more accurate than a canned beverage. Knowing that many of you are sensitive to such stories, I’ll stop right here and change the subject. A few nights after the heavy rains from Hurricane Flo had stopped, something pulled Tommy out of bed. He swears he saw strange lights in the sky and a few of our neighbors reported seeing similar flashes of light that evening. Thankfully, aliens did not kidnap our fearless leader. But that skunk is gone. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Wine tasting terms, Elegant structure And redder still on old stone walls Are leaves of woodbine twining; In October there is something in the air—brilliant clarity, changing light—that makes my heart rejoice. The carefree warmth of summer’s party has ended and a comforting quiet steals into our homes and hearts. Perhaps no month can rival October’s bright blue weather, as Helen Hunt Jackson wrote in her eponymous poem but neither perhaps do any rival October’s elegant structure: perfect temperatures, perfect clarity of light and a blaze of color. As with anything—a building, a human—the components (slate and stone or muscle and bone) help create the structure, so too in wine do its components (alcohol, tannin, acidity, glycerol) make up the structure. Think of a wine’s structure as its backbone. And when the components all work together, the wine is considered well structured;

its foundation is sound and offers a clue to how well the wine will age, if not necessarily how well it will taste. Structure has more to do with body, texture or mouthfeel than with flavor. Think about swirling water in your mouth and then swirling honey. Forget about the sweet taste of sugar, and focus on the texture of the liquid you’re swirling (or trying to swirl, in the case of honey.) Balance is another way of saying the components are all working in harmony, but balance differs from structure in that it is greater, or more encompassing. A balanced wine includes a well-defined structure, as well as the right amount of fruit, extract, acidity and so on. To help you practice, a group of wine tasters and I ventured to Italy for research. We communed with the spirit of St. Francis high up in the hills in his hermitage, which in his time was no more than a cave. And while we found much in the way of reverence for nature and spiritual salvation, we found little “vino” in the woods. Descending from ethereal heights, we lapped up

Tili’s Grechetto, low in alcohol but high in body and structure, as well as the exceptional Sagrantino. Tili sacreterre 2012 - All Sagrantino, aged for five years in French barriques. Rich and complex with notes of toffee and prune. $48.99. The whites of Campania were equally elegant: Falaghina, Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo. And while these worked wonders as we sat sipping, gazing out to an azure sea in Capri, for the month of October let’s focus on the bold and beautiful Aglianico, that perfect fireside red. Mastroberardino, Iripinia, Aglianico, 2014 – Aglianico is the signature red grape of Campania, and the principal grape of the DOCG Taurasi. And if anyone deserves credit for revitalizing Campania’s three ancient varietals, it’s Antonio Mastroberardino, who heads one of the leading wineries and wine families in Italy. Look for dark fruit notes, with smoke, ash, leather, tobacco, and spice. Dark and rich, with nice acidity and tannins allowing for good aging potential. $24.99 Pair with lamb or strong dishes.

OCTOBER 2018

Where there is hunger ...

Lynchburg Grows

Drive to the end of Englewood Street near Lynchburg’s City Stadium and suddenly you’re in another world. The mountains roll out to the south while two acres of greenhouses spread out across the farm. Crickets chirp and hens cluck with only the occasional siren or the whistle of a nearby train to remind you that you’re in the middle of town. You’ve arrived at Lynchburg Grows, a not-for-profit farm with the dual mission to work with the community to provide access to healthy food and afford purposeful jobs to individuals with disabilities. continued on page 12

Kendra Ann Smith has lived in Lynchburg for 14 years, but it wasn’t until she was working on her master’s degree at Liberty University that she learned her town is also home to food deserts - areas where residents don’t have ready access to fresh and nutritious food. According to Feeding America, the statistics aren’t good. In Virginia alone, 1 in 9 people struggles with hunger and for children that number rises to 1 in 8. Some people with physical disabilities find it difficult to get to a grocery store. Older citizens frequently face the choice between paying for their medications and buying healthy food. In other parts of town, fresh produce simply isn’t available within a reasonable distance. “Kim Payne, a Lynchburg Grows board member, came to Liberty a year ago and gave a whole presentation on food deserts,” Kendra, a Public Health Nutrition major, explains. She decided right then and there to get involved with the farm. This seven-acre oasis has been a hub of agriculture since the early 1900’s, when it operated as the largest grower of wholesale flowers east of the Mississippi River. Some Lynchburg residents still remember when the Schenkel family acquired the property in the 1950’s and became the largest wholesale rose producer on the East Coast. The property sat idle from the 1990’s until 2003, when residents in a nearby group home needed a garden spot. The community came together around the greenhouses and from this kernel grew the organization now known as Lynchburg Grows. continued on page 14

Today, all ten greenhouses, some dating back the early 1920’s are filled to capacity with flowers and vegetables, all grown using organic practices.

Rows of beans and black-eyed peas reach for the roof, greens forests display spikes of okra, clusters of ripe tomatoes hang heavy from vines, while the next bed over offers a show of saucy peppers – black, green and red. Marigolds and zinnias throw their colors into the kaleidoscope. The air is redolent of basil, rosemary, lemon mint. One greenhouse is devoted solely to the roses that once occupied the entire property. Blooms of every hue and variety decorate the beds while their delicate scent lingers in the warm moist air.

There are hybrid teas among others, and Lavonde, a lavender rose used in perfume. Friday morning finds Christopher Price and Joseph Schriffer, both veterans of nearly six years, picking cow peas. The vines twine around stalks as tall as they are. Chris stoops close to the ground to snip a handful of beans with shears. He loves to eat all vegetables, he claims, except for green beans. But he’ll eat those too, he says with a laugh, if his sister makes him. continued on page 16

Joseph loves the history of the farm, and meeting people from all walks of life, he says, reaching up to cut the long pea pods. Salad greens are his favorite. Like Chris, he’s quick to reveal his sense of humor. If he guesses your age, he’ll guess low. A chuckle. “I don’t want to step in that puddle!” The men fill their baskets, then head to the packing shed to weigh their haul. In 2017, staff and volunteers picked 52,000 servings of produce. The nonprofit distributes its bounty in a number of ways. The Veggie Van makes regular stops at parks and neighborhoods where residents can walk up and buy inexpensive, fresh produce. In some cases, it’s available at no charge. Lynchburg Grows donates vegetables and flowers to local shelters, churches and the Lynchburg Area Food Bank. When the gardens are booming, city restaurants like Crisp and Urbavore purchase from LG, buying local and furthering the cause. The Lynchburg Grows shop is also open on Thursdays to all residents. The Veggie Box is the LG’s Community Supported Agriculture program and it helps pay for the organization’s work in food deserts. 115 people have subscribed this year and each week they come to the shop on Englewood Drive to select their produce and other farmraised or locally-produced food. This week clients can choose from a list that includes ½ dozen eggs, a bag of popcorn ready for the popper, 12 ounces of pasta, a variety of peppers and greens, peas, tomatoes, and okra. “I was excited to have a local source for fresh vegetables,” says Melanie Woods, a Veggie Box subscriber. She’s particularly impressed with LG’s work with the Veggie Van. “As a dietitian,” she says, “I’m painfully aware that there are areas in this city where some residents have no access – none at all - to nutritious food.” continued on page 18

The FreshRx veggie prescription program is one of the most promising endeavors. Local doctors like Dr. Velyn Wu, a family medicine physician with Centra, are teaming up with Lynchburg Grows to introduce their patients who are at risk for conditions such as heart disease and diabetes to the benefits of healthy eating. At Lynchburg Grows, staff provide patients with fresh food and offer tips on how to add more fresh fruits and vegetables to their daily eating habits. Long term, Dr. Wu explains, this helps people manage and treat their medical conditions with healthy eating. This may allow them to decrease their need for expensive medications with side effects and improve their overall health. She hopes that small changes will add up to a lifetime of major improvement. Kendra Ann Smith found her involvement as an intern with Lynchburg Grows. It’s Tuesday afternoon and she mans the Veggie Van, parked beneath a shady oak in Miller Park. The September leaves are starting to show a bit of color and a lone monarch flutters by on its way south. A neighborhood man saunters up to the tables loaded with baskets of fresh cucumbers, greens, beans, peppers and eggs. He fishes around in his pants pocket and comes up with the buck-fifty needed to purchase a couple of long crisp English cucumbers. With all the rain this summer, he tells her, his garden vegetables literally rotted on the vine. Another table holds baskets of tomatoes and sweet potatoes, offered for free to anyone who wants them. Stacks of recipes and information on how to prepare fresh produce lie beneath an improvised cucumber paperweight. “So much of public health work is policy-oriented,” Kendra explains, “but I want more personal involvement with people.” When she finishes up her master’s degree at the end of this semester, she’ll seek full time employment. She checks her watch. It’s time to pack up the van and move to the next location. Wherever she goes from here, her life has been changed by Lynchburg Grows. BRL

continued from page 21

A Sunday morning rendezvous at the James River boat ramp at Bent Creek is where I meet Jeannie O’Brien, the human behind the JOTV News Facebook page. Stepping out of her husband’s red Dodge Ram — she has seized it for use as her Mobile Command Unit — Jeannie reaches back in to grab some on-air rain gear. Fighting a flimsy plastic poncho like a child ignoring the suffocation warning on a dry cleaner bag, the super hero dons her cape. A lint roller microphone with “JOTV” written in Sharpie is her sword. “Good morning, everybody! Wait a minute …” There’s a slight wardrobe malfunction as Jeannie pauses to adjust her bright yellow goggles. “… This is Jeannie coming to you liiiiiiive from the Heart of Bent Creek!” Known to James River enthusiasts as a popular put-in, Bent Creek has never been much more than a tiny dot on an atlas. But ever since Hurricane Florence, Jeannie’s “live” weather reports from her Gladstone stomping grounds are attracting an online audience. And her comedic analysis of the slow moving system has been on point. “She was named after a woman and you know how we are. We’re never on time. We’re always late. We don’t know where we’re going.” A hurricane that bears a resemblance to that other Flo, the Aunt. “Unpredictable. You don’t know where she’s coming from or how long she’s staying.” A break in the weather from one of the hurricane’s rain bands means Jeannie can run back up to the Mobile Command Unit to check on her video upload. She has her MacBook Air resting on the center console, and a can of Red Bull in a cup holder. When she’s not wearing her news cape, Jeannie is a paramedic running calls with Delta Response Team Ambulance Service out of Appomattox. The fact that she is fresh off a 24hour shift may have something to do with that can of Red Bull. “Accidents, heart attacks, you name it.” And now that her shift is over, rising river levels from the remnants of Hurricane Flo.

“My goal is to be happy every day and if I can make somebody else laugh, even in the worst time, then that’s what it’s all about.” And in a week where The Weather Channel’s Mike Sidel got heat for appearing to embellish a live hurricane report (people shown behind him did not seem to have a problem dealing with the wind), why not tune in to JOTV? “It’s not about boosting ratings and making your story into what you want people to think it is,” Jeannie says. “It’s about being sure that you’re reporting the right thing. If it’s raining, its raining. If it’s not, its not. [There’s] no need to make it anymore than what it is so why not have fun while you’re reporting?” Because after all, it’s not rocket science. True, meteorologists acquire their weather predicting skills in college and on the job, but JOTV’s brand of weather wisdom is refreshingly down to earth. “We base it on rocks, or at least I do.” She’s talking about how she and her Gladstone neighbors gauge the flood stage. “We’re susceptible to rising waters and we have to be cautious about it. Those that live in that area know what to do and when to get out.” “Sometimes I hit it, sometimes I don’t. That’s most meteorologists.” That’s Jeannie O’Brien. BRL

We’re pleased to announce our new partnership in Amherst with

150 Lexington Turnpike, Amherst, VA 24521 434-946-5059

Exercise! It is a bad word to some, a word to live by for others. From a health standpoint, there are few things that matter more. Aside from quitting smoking and wearing a seat belt, there is little that one can do to better one’s health more than exercise. Certainly it can cure or at least lessen the effects of most diseases, it can help with weight loss, and it can improve mental health. It also makes one feel younger and more full of vigor! It improves life today, even while it is helping life be better in the future. Exercise is really just being active. Being active is what humans were meant to be. When we exercise we are doing what our bodies know to do, even if many of our bodies have forgotten what they are supposed to do! It is never easy to start exercising, but starting is always the first step. Take that step-literally! Walk 5 minutes per day. It costs nothing and the benefits are gigantic. Increase the 5 minutes to 10 and to 15 and soon you will be meeting the goal set out by the CDC: 150 minutes of exercise per week. That boils down

to just over 20 minutes per day, or 30 minutes 5 days a week. Most of the health benefits of exercise come from just that much. More can be better, but is not necessary. Ideally 2 sessions of strengthening per week are also advised by the CDC. That could be yoga, splitting wood, lifting weights or anything else that works the muscles. The physical health benefits of being active are well known and often discussed. But, today, many of us suffer more from stress, depression, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, helpless, or otherwise down than from physical problems. Exercise can help. A 20 minute walk can clear the mind, loosen up tight muscles, treat depression, and even improve relationships if it is done with others. Exercise for long term health. But, perhaps more importantly, exercise to feel good today! Dr. Steve Schmitz is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. This column is provided as a service to readers of Blue Ridge Life Magazine and it does not necessarily reflect the views of the publishers of this magazine. Did you know ... ? Interesting tidbits of information about our local real estate market

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Keeping things simple, here are some interesting fun facts regarding the Nelson County real estate market. Enjoy! (Statistical data was pulled from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors MLS as of September 14, 2018.) What is the distribution of residential properties – for sale, pending sale, and sold? There are currently 239 residential properties for sale countywide in Nelson County. There are 51 under contract or pending sale, and 262 have been sold in the past 12 months. What is for sale? Of the 239 residential properties for sale, the asking price ranges from $49,500 to $2,750,000. The median asking price is $285,000. There are 10 properties with an asking price greater than $1 million and 26 properties priced less than $100,000. The majority (77%) of the offerings under $100,000 are

condos at Wintergreen. What can you get for the money? There is literally something for every buyer at every budget. The least expensive property offered at $49,500 is termed by the listing agent as “ready for a renovation” with 3 bedrooms (0 bathrooms) on 4 acres of land. For considerably more cash at hand, one could get a “breathtaking” 247 acre estate with a main house, a stone guesthouse, stone barn, and renovated 1800s log house. What is the make-up of properties under contract? The median asking price of residential properties under contract is $249,900 with an asking price range from $59,000 to $2,150,000. Three pending properties are priced more than a million and 7 are under 100k. What has sold in the past 12 months? The market is improving; the number of residential

Marlo Allen

properties that sold in the past 12 months exceeds the current number for sale. There have been 262 sales ranging from $25,500 for a foreclosed home in Shipman with 3 bedrooms, 1 bath, and 2 acres to $1,800,000 for a farmhouse at Wintergreen with sweeping views and 26 acres. Initially opened in 1926 as a vaudeville house, the Wayne Theater has blossomed into a state-of-the art performace center in downtown Waynebsoro.

The Wayne Theater has come a long way since that January day in 1926 when it first opened its doors as a vaudeville house. It took two men — Cols. Carl Loth and James Patterson — to hatch the idea of a entertainment venue on Waynesboro’s West Main Street. Decades later, it’s taken a town to breathe back to life an institution flirting with the century mark. “Every time we open the doors, there are new faces,” explains Wayne Theater Executive Director Tracy Straight, who steps out of the box office to give me a tour. A delivery man appears, wheeling in cases of beer on a dolly — that wouldn’t have happened in Prohibition-era Waynesboro. At least not so out in the open. “What we loved about this project is we were able to preserve what we could historically, yet all have new infrastructure to be a performing arts center. It was only before a film house that showed movies.” After opening as a vaudeville house, “talkies” were added a few years later as the Golden Era of film began to blossom. Over the years, the theater was renovated, survived a fire, renovated again, before its owners deeded the building to the city of Waynesboro. To keep it from being demolished The Wayne Theater Alliance formed as a non-profit in 2000 with the goal of renovating the structure. Though today’s Theater boats plenty of modern conveniences (the acoustics are amazing), the building hasn’t shed its past entirely. continued on page 32

“This theater had a colored entrance,” Tracy says, motioning to a door that no serves as an exit. “And this is the original staircase.” It goes straight to the balcony, arguably the best seats in the house. “You see the cutout of the stage?” I nod. “That is a hydraulic orchestra pit.” Just like in the big cities. Four mighty hydraulics sink the pit all the way down and depending on the show, the pit raises back up flush with the floor to accommodate VIP seating. So for a stage lover like Tracy, who used to be an elementary school music teacher, this place is pure paradise and passion. Getting to that day in 2016 when the doors were reopened wasn’t easy. “It was an anticipated moment we had been waiting for for years. It was very special. I had both my boys with me,” she says, her eyes getting a little shinier. “Basically the message was that this was a project fueled by the community, supported by the community, and now being given back as a gift to the community.”

The movies and the Signature Speaker series are quite literally a gift as they are free to whomever wants to see them. “We just have a pay-what-you-will donation jar.” Which means the Theater must bring in money in other ways, namely through sponsorships as well as ticket sales for its other performances. 40% of box office revenue covers what happens on stage. The Theater is in an ongoing hunt for sponsors to cover the remaining 60%.

“That’s our formula in an effort to keep ticket prices as low as we can and more people to be able to come and enjoy.” For example, Augusta Health is underwriting a healththemed Signature Speaker series with dates in September and October. Fishersville-based pediatric dentist Brian T. Brumbaugh helps sponsor the Theater’s arts education programming which includes showings of Charlotte’s Web and The Cat in the Hat.

WINTERGREEN

[ nelson county ]

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by YVETTE STAFFORD

John L. Barnes, Jr. snapped this photo of a black bear in August from his home at Wintergreen. John Howard (below), who also lives at Wintergreen, woke up to the sound of a black bear in his house recently.

S P M BU E H T IN T H G I N

Musician John Howard wakes up to a furry visitor in his home and lives to tell the hairy tale. They say nothing good ever happens after midnight. According to John Howard’s clock, the time was 12:58 am. “I hear the noise and I think it’s a mouse or something.” John’s buddy, Zach was visiting and asleep on the sofa. John’s son, a curly-haired toddler named Baker, was in his room asleep. John tiptoed out of his room to investigate the noise. “The first thing I saw was fur and I was like, ‘I don’t have a cat!’” No sir. John does not have a cat. The mouse that became a cat became a bear. Time to wake up Zach, still snoozing on the couch. continued on page 38

“He has a look on his face, it’s like Mr. Bill (from Saturday Night Live) and he jumps up and runs in the bedroom and slams the door.” A subtle way of signaling to John that he’ll be the one taking care of this tonight. “I close Baker’s door and then I come over here and the bear sees me and it comes running at me so I ran into Baker’s room.” By now, little Baker is awake. “Daddy what’s going on?” he says groggily. The bear cub is roaring now and it sounds like the stuff of nightmares. “Is that a tiger?” Baker asks. No, just a baby bear, daddy tells him. John’s been living in his family’s home overlooking the Devils Knob golf course in Wintergreen off and on for 28 years. They’ve had bears in the yard and on the porch. Raccoons have come up to the screen door. There’s even a hawk that likes to perch on John’s second story deck. But this time the bear was inside the house and headed straight to the kitchen. Admit it: stale french fries sitting on the stove can be irresistible at 1 o’clock in the morning. “I ran over there and flicked the light on. The first thing I was thinking about was momma. Where’s momma?”

Where’s momma? That’s a great question. She couldn’t be far. The bear cub was now in the kitchen, tearing stuff off the counter, jumping in the sink. And just like an out of control toddler, the little bear saw the ladder to the loft and attacked it. It looks just like a tree, right? John tried coaxing him to the sliding door to the deck but if you’ve ever tried to reason with a toddler, try reasoning with a bear cub in the middle of the night.

Wintergreen resident Cyndy Morris sent along this image of a bear that visited her deck recently. It’s been such a frequent visitor, the bear now has a name: Woody.

“That’s when I saw momma pop out on the deck outside and it scared the crap out of me! So I ran at her, making myself big.” Big, bad, scary John wearing only the shorts he was sleeping in, was enough to scare off momma. “I was totally in between momma and baby. My adrenaline was insane.” How insane? Mic stand insane. John is a local musician and a tool of the trade is what he reached for. “So I got a microphone stand because I could open up the bottom of it,” John explains to me, as he opens up the legs that spread outward like an umbrella. “The baby had climbed down and then went for the door and at that point I had the door closed because of momma.” Now picture a wall of windows with wood trim in between the glass panes. Momma’s on the other side, just a few yards away. “So he just started climbing up the moulding on my wall and then I secured it against the wall with the microphone stand and delicately got the door open and pushed the little baby bear out the door and then ran off to momma.” And John had a moment to take a deep breath as the heart in his chest thumped like a drum, the blood curdling sound of that scared cub ringing in his ears like cymbals. He opened his mouth to release the following words … “What the …?!” … Fudge was not sitting on his kitchen counter but Zach the house guest, now shaken up, apologized. “Dude, I’m sorry that I put that egg roll in that trash,” he told John. It probably wasn’t the egg roll but it could have been the fact that it was a nice cool night, and the sliding doors had been left open just enough for a bear cub to poke through. Great sleeping weather for Zach. Greet creeping weather for a bear.

“For this time of year I think it’s pretty normal, but it’s a good time to remind yourself what brings them in.” Wise words from Wintergreen Fire & Rescue Chief Curtis Sheets who says a bear cub wandered into the firehouse a few weeks prior to John’s encounter. Sheets says firemen had heard some noise and when they came to investigate, they too saw a not-mouse wandering around the bays near the ambulance. “In our case, we keep a cooler of snacks in the floor for an extended call like a search or a forest fire. Or if we think we’re going to get stuck for hours, we grab it on our way out the door. We feel like that’s probably what he was after. We’ve just go to figure out a different place to put that.” After trying to coax the cub back out the back door in which he came — again, reasoning with a little cub is tough — they hit the “up” button for the engine bays and out he went. Cyndy Morris, who has a home at Wintergreen, had a similar encounter one week in August when her five grandkids were visiting. “One evening they were dancing and singing on our deck (Gangnam style) and the bear came right up on the deck behind them,” she told me in an email. That was a bit too close for comfort but the sighting earned the bear a name, Woody. “He came back the next night and walked right past our house again. The kids were so excited to see him twice. He has been on our deck five times, that we have seen.” Nanas can be so much fun, especially when they let you dance Gangnam style on the deck. And dads can be great when they know how to safely use a mic stand. If John can offer any parting words to Wintergreen’s bear population, it is this: “I would like to tell momma bear to teach her children not to break into anyone’s property.” Dude, even if the egg roll in the trash smells amazing. STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by YVETTE STAFFORD

the INNKEEPERS After a serendipitous drive along a country road, Rich and Mary can finally breathe and take it “inn.”

Sometimes the best way to find your next home is to detour up the hill to a winery. “On the way back down we saw this place and we stopped in.” Looking to segue into retirement by opening a bed and breakfast, Rich and Mary Tousignant weren’t having much luck finding the ideal property. They’re horse people so a farm with stables would be ideal. And if its in the middle of wine country, even better. When they visited what used to be the old Meander Inn (it has been a private residence for roughly the last decade), the ink hadn’t even dried on the real estate listing contract. “I just about went into cardiac arrest,” Rich said, and we’re glad he didn’t. He and Mary stayed there for 3.5 hours and left with a mighty good feeling. “When we left here, we knew this was it.” The Tousignants are originally from Vermont — East Montpelier, to be exact — and with them for the adventure are their two horses, Wind Dance and Max, a pair of mini donkeys, Mollie and Sadie, and Lilly, their 8-year-old German Shepherd. A sign that this move was meant to be, their home in Vermont sold in a matter of days. They split up the move with the animals over several days and as soon was they drove closer to their final destination, their new home didn’t feel so new. continued on page 42

“When we drove down 151 that first time coming to this area we just looked around agog. ‘Wow, this feels like home!’” Mary explained. And for anyone who has been to Vermont and has seen its farms and its mountains, you might agree. “This is the Vermont of the South,” Rich proclaimed. We walk down the hill on which the house is perched, down to a white board fence where the animals are. Not quite a year since the move, Rich and Mary are putting the final touches on what it takes to open a B&B. There are no guests on this day, the first week they are open. The calm before the seasonal storm perhaps. “We were knocked out. We still are,” Rich adds, grabbing a treat for Mollie and Sadie. “We’ll never leave this area … I’m staying here.” It’s hard not to chuckle at his statement given he’s spent 30 years in the tombstone business. “You tell people I do monuments. ‘You mean tombstones?’”

continued from page 40

After a stretch of years as a private residence, Rich and Mary Tousignant are reopening an iconic Nellysford farmhouse as a bed and breakfast, the Nellysford Country Inn. Originally from Vermont, the animals and their owners seem to feel right at home in their new digs.

Look at a big civic monument, and someone had to assemble that project. Rich has just wrapped up a monument at the Hancock-Adams Common in Quincy, Massachusetts. Mary, in a similar line of work, works with architectural stone— mainly granite — and continues to visit clients in New England. But for now, their focus will be on breakfasts and beds. Since Mary avoids gluten for health reasons, there is no regular flour in the house and as regular visitors to the Nelson Farmers’ Market, expect locally-sourced meats and other food. Guests will have the option of bringing their own horses and hitting the farm’s trails, some of which meander along the bold Rockfish River. After 25 years of the Vermont farm life, Rich and Mary seem to be settling in just fine at the Nellysford Country Inn. “This was just a match.” BRL
