thepublishers I usually type these things out solo with a Star Wars playlist in my earbuds. Once a child of the ‘80s, always a child of the ‘80s. Today, Peyton’s with me at a coffee shop, fresh out of a Brazillian Jiu Jitsu class. As we walked up the stairs to the building, Peyton noticed a purple sticker of a heart. She loves purple and she loves hearts, so she asked why it was there. Underneath the heart in white letters was the name “Heather.” “A young woman died near here last Saturday.” Her face instantly looked a little older to me, a little less innocent in spite of her wiggly bottom tooth, and I knew her next question would be “Why?” and “How?” I took her by the hand and told her we’d talk about it after class. “Don’t have dragon breath!” The kids declare, as they recite the class rules. “Lift people up!” I knew heading into Charlottesville last week that things had the potential of spiraling out of control. Even so, class was far enough way from the protests and since I’m a Star Wars child, I knew I could hopefully Jedi mind trick our way out of trouble. With the ominous sound of a chopper hovering overhead, I piled

the kids into the truck to head to an uptown coffee shop. As they enjoyed a treat and faster internet than I could offer at home, I streamed live video of the rally, watching the storied town of Jefferson morph into the kind of modern battleground no one was really expecting. “Can I have another piece of cookie?” Peyton asked. The ones at this place are huge so I dole it out sparingly, only to be reminded by Tina Fey that sheetcaking is a grassroots movement, so maybe eating a cookie the size of your face isn’t such a bad idea. In such times, I find turning to Yoda helps. “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.” Or as the jiu jitsu kids say, “Lift people up.” Yvette and Tommy Stafford SEPTEMBER 2017 Blue Ridge LIFE 7

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com What Hemingway Teaches About Wine Many people know of my great esteem for Hemingway. And at the risk of causing you to choke back half your whiskey into the open pages of The Sun Also Rises, I’ll say that I find him a sensitive, nuanced writer who cares deeply about women. If you ardently disagree, there are plenty of academics and feminists who happily side with you, citing examples of misogyny too numerous to list here. And then of course there’s his macho image, but hear me out when I say that perhaps all the bull fighting, big game hunting, deep sea fishing, boxing, wars et cetera was in an odd way incidental and largely metaphorical. Beneath the surface he was writing about how infinitely complex men and women are, and you don’t have to be a Freudian analyst to see the strong androgynous strain in his stories, the way his men and women blend together, one becoming the other. Long before we had Trans bathroom debates, Hemingway was trying to say that there is a lot of woman in a man and vice versa. Alas, Hemingway has long gone

out of fashion in this country, while wine (the wine he so loved, to say nothing of other spirits) has soared in production and consumption. In the 1970s wine was often described in terms of masculinity and femininity, as well as in the language of gender and class: “A nice little wine, although lacking in breeding.” Jump forward to today and we prefer the language of fruits and vegetables: “Aromas of blackberries, cherries, raspberries.” But note, never: “Lovely bouquet of broccoli and Brussel sprouts.” There are still wines that are forever robustly masculine: Hermitage, Brunello di Montalcino, California Cabernets and Châteauneuf-du-Pape come to mind. As well as those that are distinctly feminine: Chablis, Mosel wines, Pinot Noir in general. But when you tap into your inner Hemingway, and examine that alcoholic, full-bodied, macho Châteauneuf-du-Pape more closely, you’ll notice that beyond the high alcohol is the luscious Grenache masquerading as a sexy French woman. I thought of titling the column, Hermaphrodite Wines, then thought, perhaps not. Joking aside, when you

think about wine in this way (what is manly about it? Tannins? Alcohol? What is feminine about it? Raspberry? Smoothness?) it further stimulates the old couple of brain cells and I’d argue also further increases your enjoyment—or at least ups the ante around your dinner table discussion. Valle Dell’Acate, Cerasuolo di Vittoria, 2013 (organic) – beautiful example of masculine/feminine. The decidedly macho Nero d’Avola (70%) might have you thinking the wine would be robust. But in this case the woman has the upper hand. Frappato, only 30% of the blend, is known for its raspberry notes, and this is a lighter, more delicate wine, yet one with beautiful structure, backbone and yes, breeding. Perhaps this has less to do with the Frappato and more to do with Gaetana Jacono. Gaetana, who looks more like a runway model out of Milan than a 6th-generation winemaker, is the brains behind this Cerasuolo di Vittoria D.O.C.G., the only D.O.C.G. in Sicily. Look for the Frappato’s raspberry notes, as well as pomegranate, cherry, together with woodsy aromas, and a medium palate with allspice, anise, and red plum. $24.99

If you look at it under the right light, you can almost see this humble little house on the hill blushing from all of the attention it’s getting. Barbara Albert drove all the way from Batesville to set up her easel under the shade of a large oak. “I’m attracted to this mass of blue mountains in the center here,” she says, motioning the way artists do, towards the scene behind the canvas. “I do a lot of paintings of mountains, to be honest, but having the house is quite an enchantment and I wanted to try to do it justice.” Justice. It’s a similar sentiment Libby Whitley felt when she bought the circa 1886 house with the intent of awakening it from its deep decades-long slumber. “For years I would drive up 151 and I would look at it sitting up here on a hill,” she says. A house that sits empty is not a home. Even so, there was something about it that tugged at Libby’s memories of her grandmother in Ohio. “Grammy’s house was a big ol’ late 19th century farmhouse like this, except this is little -- and hers was big -- but it had much the same feel so I thought, ‘Well I think I could memorialize my grandmother’s house with the front porch detail.’” Libby pulls out an old photograph of her mother and Tinker the dog, standing at the doorway of “Grammy’s house,” and in it you see the unique round hoops on the sides of the porch entry. She showed that picture to her cabinet maker.

Destined for more time at his easel once he retires, David Spears of Crozet paints a barn at Three Beeches, a farmhouse remodeled into an Airbnb rental in Roseland. The barn was a popular subject for the plein air painters who gathered to paint the property.

SEPTEMBER 2017

“He took three big sheets of Azak siding and laminated it together. We designed it, he mocked up a template, we propped it up and said, “Yep, that’s it!” A few yards away, Barbara carefully considers her next stroke. “It’s really hard figuring out here today what my center of interest is. I don’t usually put a house halfway off the canvas, since I really want just the facade, I’ve decided just to highlight the facade and capture just as much of the background as I can ... It’s almost split, you know I feel a little split, drawn both to the outside and to the beauty of the house.” Given the condition of the home when she bought it, Libby too was operating with a blank canvas. She lucked out on the home’s “bones,” including the beams on the bottom of the house. “Solid as a rock and dry as a bone. Not a bug in the place.” Inside, the plaster walls were gutted, stripped down to the studs. “The people that hung the drywall had to put an inch of Bondo between the crown moulding and the ceiling just to seal up the gap. You know, I think things like that are endearing.” Endearing like the bug hovering over Meg West’s wet canvas. “Gnats love oil and if they get caught on a canvas you just wait until it dries enough and you just scrape them off. Sometimes they leave a little bit of themselves there but truly it’s not a problem.” Based in Crozet, Meg is one of a few artists who is fortunate to make a living from her art. Though she does finish some of her outdoor work in studio, the fact that she paints outside every day is a testament to her work. “It’s so much more fun. It’s much more alive. You are sweating with bugs, shade seeking. You’re living in the elements and the light changes and the clouds come over and take your sun away and you have to deal with it. It’s more challenging, it’s more fun, it’s more the adventure of what it gives you.” David Spears, who has his easel set up a few feet away from her, couldn’t agree more. “I have a day job but in my mind I’m a painter,” he notes, taking a break from the red roofed barn he and Meg are painting. “When I’m driving down the road, I see something, my mind says, ‘I want to paint that.’” And that’s a look into the mind of a geologist who is nearing the end of his career and eager to begin a new chapter as an artist. On any other weekend, he would have likely stayed home and mowed the grass. But being invited to paint a beautiful little house – now renamed Three Beeches (for the trio of massive Beech trees behind it) and renovated as a weekend getaway – away from roadside weekend traffic, is a treat. “Being here in the shade with breeze is very pleasant. And if you get a bug you just pick it off with a palette knife.” Scrape. Which is part of the charm of painting outside, as Barbara will tell you, when the roar of the cicadas and the sounds of the highway are as much a part of the painting as the subject. “I always paint outside. Well, it’s the only way to see a place and my teachers have always pointed out how photographs are inadequate. When you look at them critically you’ll see they are very flat and they don’t capture the nuances. Speaking of shadows and the nuance of color, there is so much there, there. It just flattens out in a photo so you have to either make it up or stand here and wait until it enters. It kind of enters you.” Pausing once more to look at the home and its mountains, Barbara offers some truth. “It’s seeing a place in the real essence, the real truth and authenticity of a place.” And from Barbara’s spot, the century-old view is timeless, like the roar of the cicadas’ opus celebrating the house on the hill and the memories of Grammy’s porch. There stands a particularly romantic grove of hardwoods flanking a short section of road in Swoope, western Augusta County. There wild columbine mass in the springtime; autumn light glitters through golden leaves. It’s the sort of place one might decide to throw an anchor, let yourself fall in love, and call that charming little nest below the cornfield yielding to mountain views, home in your just-before-waking-to-reality wildest dreams. Rob Cocke frequently paused in the “Spitler Woods” while cycling the Swoope area to take in the cool shade and that dreamy vista. He had and would continue to travel to Africa where his American medical education was burnished by third world issues of infant mortality, HIV, and infectious diseases such as malaria which he had first hand experience surviving. In Malawi (Southwestern Africa) he realized that poverty did not exclude happiness nor did a medical career exclude a life rich with other experiences. Returning from his last mission to Africa Rob began settling into his job as an emergency room doctor at Augusta Health, as well as wooing relationships with an orphaned schoolhouse, a community, and his bride-to-be, Claire Wilson. While also in Malawi Claire explains she, “volunteered at a home for street children called Samaritan Trust in the afternoon, tutoring, taking kids to the doctor, playing games, helping with the health care of their livestock. In the morning, while the kids were in school, I volunteered for the local veterinarian. She was this badass female professional which is very rare in Malawi and really inspired me - that’s how I got interested in going back to school for veterinary technology.” 18

Back to School Rob says, “I found out that Elizabeth Spitler owned the Glebe Schoolhouse so I wrote her a letter, in longhand, explaining who I was. It was sort of a courtship with us. I wrote every year for three years. She would invite Claire and me over for pie, there was always a different neighbor visiting.” Claire recalls, “We got home from a year in Africa and we were in contact with Ms. Spitler within a month with her willing to talk about selling the schoolhouse, which the year previous we would have thought was just not on the table.” Rob and Claire passed the juried pie test.

“This schoolhouse marks all sorts of significant events for us,” Claire explains. “We trespassed around here when we were first dating, we got engaged in the schoolhouse December 2013, bought it in 2014, we were married here in May 2015.”

Most recently, or eight months ago to be more precise, Cyrus arrived. He teeters and bumps a diapered bottom on the floor. Seizing the open opportunity, pug-faced, curly-tailed Calpurnia takes up a familiar spot in Rob’s arms snuffling her contentment. There is much to be content about here, not the least of which is the almost audible sigh of a lovingly, thoughtfully rescued landmark. continued on page 20

The Glebe Schoolhouse was recognized by the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Built circa 1830 it is the only extant one room school house in Augusta County, Virginia, although by 1871 there were twelve one room brick school houses in the county. By the end of the 19th century only three remained. In the 1940’s the school ceased to operate as a school and the ell addition was attached to create additional private living space. “Glebe” refers to land intended to provide income for a clergyman’s benefit as well as the parish. The original glebe of Swoope provided 200 acres for a church and parsonage as purchased by the Augusta County Vestry in 1749. By 1753 the vestry was impatient with the lack of progress on the proposed improvements. As recorded in the vestry records (1746-1779) procrastination on these projects was owing to the following explanation, “As ii [sic] appears that the greater part of the inhabitants of the forks of the James have deserted their plantations, by reason of the frequent incursions of the

Indians; [it is] unnecessary to build a chapel of ease.” A few hundred yards from the schoolhouse, on land not owned by Rob and Claire, is the Glebe Burying Ground. Its graves date back to the 1770’s and reflect the history that dampened the spirit of the would be church-building parishioners. History marches forward in the restoration of the schoolhouse. Pulling up floorboards to create a crawl space beneath workers found a dog tag. Through happenstance one of them recognized the name, “ Denton E. Layman”, as a fellow who lived in nearby Churchville. Layman and his wife Virginia came to visit the site and ponder how this tag found its way there, perhaps through a neighbor boy who used to help out on their farm in Swoope in the late ‘40’s. Layman recalled what it was like returning from the war in 1946, “There was a lot of hoping I would come home, because a lot of us didn’t.” Mr. Layman, 94, gave his tag to his grandson and passed away six weeks later. continued on page 22

The past is the foundation of this home, literally. The dry-stack stone retaining wall is made from a salvaged barn in Bridgewater. The future is also the foundation. The barn, as situated by landscape architect Amy Ransom Arnold, was raised by friends the day before Rob and Claire’s wedding. The next day the bride and bride’s maids convened at Elizabeth Spitler’s home for the traditional wedding preparations. A big piece of this pie is the community that came along with the Glebe Schoolhouse, not to mention the 15 or so that wedding guests brought in lieu of a wedding cake. Claire muses, “Rob and I are trying to live to a certain extent, within reason, from a different time as well. We’re taking a break from modernity and technology and that kind of busy, hectic, plugged-in lifestyle.” The Wilson’s like making their own bread recognizing the water from their well, the yeast particular to their environment. “It’s not like any other bread out there.” says Claire. Laying hens cluck and scratch below the raised bed garden, features impervious to time. We’re sipping homemade beers and enjoying the cool of concrete floors on our bare feet. In a few months these radiant heat floors will feel just as good toasty warm. Indirect sunlight glows off of the sycamore book-matched kitchen cabinets crafted by Paul Borzelleca of Staunton. Cyrus is giggling and squirming as if to hurry up and get on with his promised free-range childhood of exploring, egg-gathering, gardening, woodworking with his father who if he has his way, will see Cyrus become “an epic cyclist out here.” Who knows what Baby Cyrus may bike across someday, maybe an epic life romance. A VIRGINIA VERMOUTH

SEPTEMBER 2017

George Hodson, Emily Pelton, and Elliot Watkins take a break from bottling two Flying Fox vermouth offerings, Spring and Summer.

Crafted by the family that brings you Veritas wines, Flying Fox Vermouth celebrates the seasons.

continued from page 31

Steps away from the Veritas tasting room, where wedding planners are meeting over a cheese plate to consider the winery as a venue, general manager George Hodson guides me down to the cellar where his brother-in-law is blowing into a bulky metal contraption. “This is a traditional champagne filling machine that basically just uses counter pressure to fill your bottles, but it’s adjustable so you can use it for any size bottle,” explains assistant winemaker Elliot Watkins, between breaths, as the bright yellow device spins slowly like a carousel. “Usually we use a big mobile bottling line for all of our actual wines, but this allows us to do this small batch and be really hands on with it.” Elliot’s boss and sister-in-law, head winemaker Emily Pelton, is grinning because she’s about to spill the beans on a closely-guarded family secret, a project the team has been working on for months “Vermouth is wine that is infused with botanicals. It typically has higher alcohol because it is fortified with a little bit of brandy and a higher residual sugar so it’s an apéritif,” head winemaker Emily says. But here’s the twist.

“Typically vermouth is a splash of vermouth in your cocktail. So now we’re trying to go for a splash of cocktail with your vermouth.” The project is unlike anything the Virginia wine powerhouse has done in recent years. In some ways, it’s a throwback to the winery’s early days before it exploded onto the wine scene with such hits as its award-winning Viognier and Petit Verdot. About two years ago, siblings George, Emily and Chloe (Chloe and Elliott are married) bought Flying Fox, which has a tasting room a few miles south of the winery, closer to Greenfield. Many of Flying Fox’s grapes are grown on land near Veritas. “The first year we got to know the vineyard and kind of started wrapping our head around the fact that it is our wine,” George says. “Emily has always made the wine but it is a big mental change ... The first year, we learned the vineyard. The second year we made some pretty significant pruning changes and some pretty significant vineyard management techniques. continued on page 34

“2017’s vintage is going to be the first vintage that’s completely ours.” Emily takes me over to a work table where two bottles sit: One is a red-colored vermouth called Spring. “Strawberries, rhubarb, lime, juniper and the flavor fixer is wormwood, which is a very classic vermouth base.” The other has a yellow tint and is appropriately called Summer. “Peaches, ginger, heather, juniper ... the flavor fixer is what’s called angelica root.” And this narrow window in Summer – when the cicadas are screeching and the outside temps hover a good 30 degrees above the temperature in the bottling room – is when the Flying Fox vermouth is being born. If anything, the purchase of Flying Fox has given Emily, George and Elliott the chance to refocus their talents and generate new ideas, startup style. “This is something that we enjoyed kind of letting loose on something, making wine is pretty tough,” Elliot explains, referring to the mad bottling crush in the spring and the harvest push in the

SEPTEMBER 2017

fall. So the vermouth is a refreshingly meaningful and necessary diversion. “We just kind of explored a few things and this kept popping up with lots of bartenders looking to use them in reverse cocktails rather than martini cocktails where it’s a dash of vermouth with vodka or gin.” “I see a trend towards lower alcohol cocktails that you can sip and enjoy,” Emily says. “Lower alcohol cocktails that you can have a few of and enjoy the day with your friends without losing track of time!” Speaking of losing track of time, where does it go? Next on the list for the new Flying Fox is a reboot of its brand, George notes, which includes redesigning some labels. “Our goal is to do a portfolio of wines that is very consistent with the Virginia portfolio: Cabernet Franc, Viognier, and the things that people are very used to tasting when they come into a Virginia tasting room. But then we also want to have a line that is pushing the needle.” As that yellow bottler slowly spins, filling pallets of Spring and Summer vermouth, consider that needle pushed. BRL

continued from page 37

Renee Everhart and BRL Publisher Tommy Stafford share a finish line brew after running the BE Bold Trail 5k at Bold Rock Cidery.

The hardest part about Renee Everhart getting healthy was probably getting to the starting line. At her heaviest, she was carrying 310 lbs on her 5 foot 8 frame. At only 24 years old, she was fighting a losing war against obesity and endometriosis, a medical condition that causes the lining of the uterus to grow outside of the organ. “I never was really able to push myself through the pain of that to exercise and I just kind of ate whatever because I didn’t really care. I was not feeling well, all the time.” But she had goals. One of them was to become a firefighter but to do that, she knew she had to get healthy. The 6-month long academy began September 2015 and it was April. The sodas were the first casualty. “I was drinking only soda, no water. I was drinking juice occasionally ... I was practically dehydrated all the time.” So she made herself drink water everyday. A gallon of it was her goal. “Within the first week or so, I noticed a huge difference. I wasn’t as bloated and I lost probably 8 lbs, just flushing out my system. I just quit everything cold turkey and just ate protein and vegetables and [cut out most] of my carbs.” Having grown up on a farm where her family raised and processed cows, pigs and chickens, those foods weren’t foreign to her. “That’s what I migrated back to. I cut out everything that was processed. I bought local meats and fresh vegetables.” As the weight dropped, Renee noticed she could move better. A race at Bold Rock Cidery – part of a series of runs organized by Corkscrew Racing – would be Renee’s maiden run. It was a 4-miler. “Go big or go home, right?” Exactly. She didn’t go home. Though she wasn’t at the point where she could physically run, she walked the course, finishing in just over an hour, walking away with a confidence boost and a new perspective on people who sign up for races. “I thought they were all perfect and they were all going to be skinny, and I was going to be 2 hours behind everybody. You get out there and it’s people that are just like you. They all started somewhere, they all have a story. They all have reasons why they do it. They still all have goals.” continued on page 40

Fast forward to the Be Bold 5k, and we saw Renee in the parking area with her bib number already pinned to her shirt. 118 lbs lighter from her heaviest weight, you might call Renee a Bold Rock race veteran. “I don’t recognize me from two years ago. I remember that feeling. I remember how I was, but I don’t recognize that person. I don’t associate with that person much anymore.” Because today, Renee is wearing bib number 82, and she’s wearing a size 14 instead of a 26. “This time I was getting over pneumonia and I was mentally preparing for my lungs feeling like they were going to come out,” she said chuckling. Save the lingering pneumatic congestion, that day’s race conditions couldn’t have been better: Bright and sunny with temps in the 70s. She finished that 5k in 42:00, but Renee has her mind set on a new finish line: The fourth and final race of the BeBold Challenge is October 7 at the cidery’s location in Asheville, North Carolina. “I can keep changing and I can be better than I was.” Because everyone runs their own race. Destination Gardening This time of year it is easy to be feeling a little discouraged about your yard and garden. After a hot, dry summer the lawn can be brown and your flowers colorless. As a landscape designer I am particularly self conscious about my yard and like to keep it looking good for any potential visitors, so August can be a depressing month. However recently I had a visitor that helped me see my landscape through new eyes and look beyond that brown patch of grass and tired coneflower. This visitor was immediately attracted to our property and the many different ‘rooms’ found within. I really stood back and examined the ‘whats’ and ‘wheres’ of destination gardening and their value to your home landscape. When you look out and see your landscape, what is the first thing you see? For me it is instant and is always a hardscape; a stone rooster sitting amidst the hydrangeas, a birdbath surrounded by hosta, a stone wall bordered by fescue, a birdhouse in the perennial border. These hardscapes are the focal points of my garden and are the foundation of the room that I try to create. Without these landscape items, my landscape becomes a sea of amorphous color and subdued textures and lines that cannot control the wandering eye. Subconsciously your eyes search for definition and hard lines – something to focus on. Once the focal point is added, add sweeps of color and greenery to complement the hardscape. During a European jaunt in 2001, I visited Giverny, Monet’s personal garden in France, and was captivated by ‘the bridge’ (hardscape) sitting above a sea of blooming water hyacinths (color) – an image that still decorates my mind. Build your landscape around similar images and concepts. The landscape bed and ultimately the sod that is attached to it can be

likened to a runway at an airport – all of those that ‘approach’ must follow these lines, typically in an ebb and flow pattern. It is imperative that the lines you create, even as simple as the border of grass to your landscape beds, be long flowing lines and not zig-zags - my rule of thumb is that if you can drive them with your SUV, they are good lines. Without grass, these lines are still easily maintained by either a ‘groomed’ groundcover, a carefully placed path, a stone border or any landscape item or plant that aids in creating a long and flowing line. When one of these borders, whether stone, grass or groundcover, turns sharply a potential room is created – the best of which is the landscape ‘cul-de-sac’ which only has one way in and one way out (similar in structure to that of a subdivision). The walls of the ‘room’ are typically a structure (shed, pergola, etc.), 3 trees nested in the bottom of the cul-de-sac in a triangular pattern or a grouping of shrubs that accentuate the entire turn. No matter the setup, one common thread must take you into and out of this area. As you now seek to place your hardscape, the focal point for the entire room, pay attention to how your eyes follow into and out of the area. The key is that as you follow the ebb and flow of your landscape edges, the eye naturally moves to your hardscape – typically found at or near the base of the cul-de-sac. Incorporating a seat into an area serves as a wonderful focal point, even if it is never used for sitting. I find that destination gardening really elevates the landscape to a new level no matter the season. Locating hardscapes can be fun. My favorite place to locate these focal points is auctions, flea markets and antique stores. ‘The find’, which is always accompanied by a story, is part of the mystery and magic of my landscape!

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I hear a lot of news about the opioid epidemic. What’s going on? Opioids are drugs that come from opium or are synthetic drugs that bind to opiate receptors in the brain. Common prescription opioids include hydrocodone, oxycodone, morphine and methadone. Fentanyl (the drug that killed Prince) is a powerful synthetic opioid and its use is in on the rise in the US. Heroin use is also on the rise. According to the CDC, 91 people die every day in the US from opioid overdose. Most overdoses are not intentional and the risk of overdose increases as the dose of the drug increases. Overdoses from opioids are more likely in people with obstructive sleep apnea, on multiple sedating medications, or with untreated depression but can happen to anyone who uses opioids, even if they are prescribed. Any long term use of opioids puts you at risk for addiction. Opioid addicts are found in every part of society, at every income level and in all ethnic groups. People using opioids don’t plan to get addicted to

Discover Why them, but it happens too often and can happen to anyone. Opioids affect the part of the brain that controls breathing, so that during an overdose a person will have decreased or absent breathing which may lead to death. They also may have pinpoint pupils and unconsciousness. Naloxone (Narcan) is a drug that reverses the effects of opioids and can save the life of someone with an overdose if given in time. It is administered by injection or nasal spray – often by friends or family who witness an overdose. People who are at high risk of overdose should have naloxone prescribed to them. First responders usually have naloxone with them. Opioid abuse is at epidemic levels and people are dying daily. If you are abusing opioids please get treatment. In the meantime talk to your doctor about naloxone – it might save your life! Dr. Charles Cole is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton.
