thepublishers I wouldn’t say he’s the brightest or most protective rooster we’ve had, but he knows how to stay alive. And for him, that means living anywhere but the coop. This roo is a hand-me-down from some fine folks who knew we could use one after a combination of stray dogs, predators and bad luck killed much of our layer flock. “I’ll have to catch him,” my friend warned me earlier this summer. “He likes to roost in trees and doesn’t sleep with the rest of the chickens.” Alrighty then. Early on, he seemed to acclimate quite well to his new life here at the farm, keeping a respectful distance from Otis and Martina. Stay away from my dogs and my garden flower beds, and you’re a keeper. “He’s a zebra rooster!” Adam said the first time he laid eyes on him. He’s right. This bird has black and white markings like a zebra. To me, he reminds me of that annoying snowy static on older TVs. (Kids, the blue screen is a relatively new invention). Recently, Static Rooster has lured his hens to the tree underneath where we keep our firewood. Maybe it’s because the weather’s been hot as giblets, but the flock has been doing

the wild chicken thing and calling that tree their home, ignoring their beautifully appointed Amish-built residence. The problem is, if the hens are laying, I have no earthly clue where the eggs are. This brings out the control freak in me. I’m all about free range chickens and children but if they’re depositing presents in secret spaces, I feel like as their caretaker, I should know where those spaces are. You can’t talk to a chicken. Same with kids sometimes. If you ask them where they put your flashlight or your favorite pen, they’ll just shoot you an innocent stare or smile. Hang on to them, wiser parents say. For they won’t always stay in the coop. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Sometimes you need a quest Life’s not about the material things you get. It’s not even about the end result, but rather the moments in between. The life that happens along the way. These moments are what make up our lives. Yet sometimes we need to walk outside and fill the birdfeeder to see and feel dawn’s first light. Or in a faraway city, it’s the quest of a new museum and the trek across town when you disinter your own visions along the way — hidden courtyards dotted with flowers, city inhabitants who run on four legs or extend branches to sun, even the flaky croissant you munched into ravenously for a snack. Lest we forever fall into set routines, however comforting, sometimes we need a quest in order to see the world afresh. When exploring foreign cultures, my sister and I would say to each other, “What’s the quest?” Hers would involve some form natural beauty, art or aquariums filled with sea creatures. Mine: chocolate and pastries. But whatever our chosen quest, it would be the moments along the way I now remember — the quest itself long forgotten.

In the quest for the best wine, I’ve met friends along the way, and perhaps that’s the best part about it. For the term “best wine” rarely has anything to do with arbitrary points that pundits and reviews love to tout. Nor has it much to do with a price tag. Rather, it has to do with something less tangible, something ineffable and often personal. The best wines are those made by the best people. Kind people, humble people. The best wines are those that respect the earth, and are therefore made using organic principles. The best wines for me are wines that are interesting. They’re different and unusual, not mass-marketed, filling grocery store shelves. But not everyone agrees with my taste here. So, the best wines are wines that taste good to you; that part goes without saying. The wines from Arianna Occhipinti have passed the quest test and qualify as wines worthy of your time and effort to seek out. Or you could just hop on over to Basics. Tami’ Frappato 2014 (organic) – Arianna Occhipinti, like Elena

Panteleoni, has goddess-like status at Basic Necessities. We love her philosophy, and we love her wines. The Tami wines are Ari’s line of everyday-drinking wines, fresh and fun. If you don’t know Frappato, September is a good time to meet this grape, as, being lighter, it makes for a good transition wine. Aromas of just picked strawberries and raspberries, with a medium body. Arianna explains that Frappato stems from a girlhood dream to make a wine that knows the land she loves: “It is the wine that most resembles me, brave, original and rebellious. It has peasant origins, for this it loves its roots and the past that it brings in; but, at the same time, it is able to fight to improve itself.” $18.99 Tami’ Nero d’Avola 2013 (organic) – Nero d’Avola is Sicily’s superstar. Rich, earthy and chewy, yet often half the price of a good Cabernet. Notes of ripe black cherry and dried figs. $18.99 We’re visiting Sicily and staying at Arianna’s estate in 2018. If this particular Sicilian quest interests you, contact me now.

MINDING MANNERS

et•i•quette The Conduct or procedure required by good breeding or prescribed by authority to be observed in social or official life (Merriam Webster). Robin Cole defines etiquette as putting others first. It’s a summer morning at Darby Farm in Albemarle County and five girls under the age of eight are gathered around a table set for high tea. Sitting with straight backs and hands in laps, the girls wear an expression of prim concentration as instructor Robin Cole reminds them of proper table manners before they begin their meal. “Remember to hold your fork like a pencil,” Robin says. Walking into the room at this moment, you might wonder if you’d stepped back in time.

In this summer girls etiquette class at Darby Farm, students learn not only how to behave properly at the dining room table, including which fork to use, passing food to other guests, and how to clear plates when the meal is over, but the importance of writing thank-you notes and even helping their parents at home. “We like to offer classes in things that have gone by the wayside such as etiquette,” Robin said. “I don’t think being courteous has gone out of fashion.” Teaching old-fashioned values is a family affair. Robin, a teacher by training, was first inspired to teach the class when her older daughter Kendall, then 13, wanted to learn about etiquette. “Hospitality has always been very important to our family,” Robin said. “We like to have people in our home from different cultures.” Eight years later, Robin is still teaching classes at Darby Farm, this summer with the assistance of 8-year-old daughter Georgia (these days Kendall is busy with the horses on the farm though she sometimes makes the scones for tea). Robin’s son Trent, 18, teaches boys skills such as fence mending, chicken processing, and milking goats in the boys’ Farm Class. Darby Farm also offers an advanced etiquette class for older kids, including interviewing for jobs and cell phone etiquette. If an etiquette class sounds boring, think again. Giggles erupt as the girls balance books on their heads, practicing good posture. “Hold your head high!” Robin instructs. Another lesson requires them to fold napkins. They also learn how to politely cut their strawberries and where to place their cutlery on their plate between bites. Then it’s time to practice introducing each other, as if they had just arrived at a party. “When you sit up straight, look around you and pass food, you have a more pleasant experience and others around you have a more pleasant experience,” Robin explained. “I want the girls to understand that having good manners doesn’t have to be burdensome. When you’re thinking about others, it can really be enjoyable.” continued on page 14

continued from page 13

For Robin, etiquette is about more than good manners; it’s about good character. Writing a thank-you letter demonstrates good character by showing that you are thinking about others and conveying respect and gratitude. The class includes such topics as caring for the elderly, proper hygiene, and helping out at home. “The main emphasis of the class is to develop character by thinking of others first.” It’s clear the girls are eating it up. “I’ve learned that you can have manners wherever you are,” said Elizabeth Wirasaputra, age seven. “And that you can have fun with manners.” “She’s such a show-off (at home),” her mother Tarti Djarkaria told me with pride. “She’s teaching the entire family.” Ali Harsaw, mother of six-year-old Ellianna, sees farther reaching effects of the class. After her brother’s recent birthday, Ellianna suggested the family write thank-you notes. She has also been working on her posture, standing up straighter than before. Ali sees a difference in her daughter’s behavior overall. “There’s this confidence piece that I’m so pleased she’s getting,” she said. “In the hustle and bustle of life with everyone running to soccer and piano, sometimes we need to sit down and talk about manners and being respectful,” Ali said. “The values at Robin’s farm are values I want my kids to be around more.” In the end, however, Elianna said that her favorite part of the class was feeding the horses at Darby Farm - and, of course, the rope swing. “They go right from sitting properly at the table to swinging on our rope swing from a hay bale,” laughed Robin. It’s break time, and the girls head outside. They run toward the rope swing, their colorful tea dresses billowing behind them. Once they arrive, they remember their manners and politely line up one behind the other. One of the girls takes off her shoes and stands barefoot on the hay bale as she clasps the rope. Then she launches herself through the air, her once finely combed hair flying in the wind. It’s a moment of pure, old-fashioned fun. BRL

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by ERIN HUGHEY-COMMERS

BACK TO HOMESCHOOL John Gulino and Erika Howsare have taken the do-it-yourself movement to a new level: this fall they will teach daughters Elsie (almost six) and Rosa (three) at home. “We felt sending them to school would be too disruptive,” said Erika. John, a development analyst at UVa, and Erika, a freelance writer, can’t agree on when they decided to homeschool the kids. “It all started with Elsie’s homebirth,” Erika says. Or with the wedding, John points out, which they carried out themselves in their own home. Or maybe with the house renovation, which they started pre-kids, and have figured out how to do step-by-step with the help of the internet. Stacks of flooring, waiting to be installed over the weekend, sit near a window where the kids use it as a bench, a work surface for colored pencil art, and to prop up a small blackboard bearing an addition problem written in yellow chalk. Rosa has emerged from a small forest of tomato plants holding bright orange fruit and Elsie has just gathered eggs from the chickens. Even the tea we’re drinking comes from mint grown in their garden. Sure, plenty of people renovate their house and grow their food. But teaching the kids, too? continued on page 18

The family likes to ease into each school day, which starts when the girls wake up. Rosa and Elsie pick books for their mom to read aloud on the couch. Sometimes they join Erika in her yoga routine. Next they have breakfast and settle into whatever inspires them most. Erika “strews” books and materials to inspire art projects, science experiments and exploration around the house and follows the girls’ lead when they decide what to learn. She sees herself as a facilitator rather than an instructor. “The girls are naturally curious,” she says. “My job is to make their day as rich as possible.” John and Erika classify themselves as “unschoolers,” homeschooling parents who choose life learning rather than a pre-packaged curriculum to guide their days. When they first started homeschooling, Erika organized activities for the girls to do each week. Ultimately that felt too planned.

“Elsie doesn’t like to be told what to learn, and I don’t operate with that much structure,” Erika said. Instead, they allow each day to unfold like the coneflowers that attract so many bees in their garden—each bringing its own surprises and learning. “We find something in the yard and that sparks a discussion, or somebody asks a question and that leads us in a different direction,” she said. And because their homeschool has only two students, not 20, John and Erika have time to respond to the girls’ questions as they come up. “When we don’t know the answer, we look it up,” John said. “We all learn together.” Math happens in the kitchen: Elsie is learning fractions when she cooks with her parents, and for performing arts she and Rosa enjoy recording stories and songs on an old-fashioned tape recorder in the living room. John, handy with electronics, automobiles, and

., building projects, encourages the girls to work alongside him, each with their own toolbox. A wood pallet playhouse they’re constructing together stands in the back yard. Biology abounds and surrounds. “Pollinators!” Rosa squeals with delight, waving her hands at the bees buzzing around a tall stand of pink coneflower. Each girl has her own garden bed, and Elsie proudly shows me her herbs and tomato plants. Not all homeschooling takes place at home. Because there are many home education networks in the area, the family has a variety of opportunities to enroll Elsie in classes. For example, Raw Learning is a homeschool resource center in Staunton founded by homeschooling mom Gleamer Sullivan. Course offerings grow out of students’ interests, and hands-on projects and interactive discussion make up much of the class time. “Because classes aren’t compulsory, if they’re not engaging, interesting, and challenging, kids can politely leave the room,” Sullivan said. Raw Learning enrolls between 50 and 70 students a year. Where is the line between unschooling and going to school? “We’re nowhere near that line,” John said. Last year Elsie attended a private preschool two mornings a week. Erika emphasized the need for the girls to stay home at least several days a week to immerse

themselves in the learning that comes with their many home projects. While John and Erika entertain the idea of homeschooling their daughters through high school, they readily admit that their decision to homeschool is made year by year, month by month. To keep track of what the girls are learning, and to practice for next year when Elsie will be in first grade, Erika keeps a notebook by the toaster oven in their kitchen where she makes notes throughout the day about what the girls are learning. Each day warrants a separate page in the notebook. At the end of the school year last June, she categorized her notes by subject for a summary of all the topics they’d explored. Highlights included learning about wild edible plants, hiking to a nearby creek to examine invertebrates, building the playhouse, and a list of the books they’d read. Next June an evaluator will review the summary Erika provides to assess whether Elsie has made satisfactory progress in her first grade year. “Sometimes days go by when you think nothing significant has happened,” John said. “To see our often chaotic days distilled to a tidy list that shows we’ve covered our bases—it’s a way of proving to ourselves that we’re doing something good here, that this is working.” BRL

Closing the Deal The home sale journey for sellers and buyers

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Selling or buying a home is a lot like climbing a mountain; you can’t reach the summit unless you are able to close the deal. Finding a home and negotiating a contract is a great accomplishment, but it is merely part of the journey. The typical home sale will involve more than 20 post contract steps. Here are a few tasks to accomplish before the deal can be closed. Home Sellers Select a settlement agent/attorney; this representative will gather necessary documentation, prepare the deed of transfer, and conduct the closing. Order home owners association (HOA) documents; if the property is governed by condominium or home owners association, the seller is obligated to provide the buyer with a disclosure packet containing covenants and restrictions, financials, minutes, etc…

Obtain home warranty; if desired, the policy must be obtained prior to closing. Ordering it early in the process can offer repair coverage for both buyers and sellers. Coordinate inspections; the seller is typically responsible for termite, well and septic inspections, and ensuring that they meet contract requirements. Complete home repairs; all repairs, as agreed to with the purchaser, will need to be completed prior to the final walk-thru. Coordinate the move; personal property should be removed and the property cleaned in preparation for the purchaser’s final walk-thru. Transfer utilities; accounts need to be transferred and fuel readings taken prior to closing in order for the settlement statement to properly reflect any fuel related credits. Sign documents; some closing documents require a notary and if not attending closing in person, must

be signed and returned in advance of closing to prevent last minute delays. Home Buyers Make final loan application; upon contract acceptance, purchaser should supply all lender required documentation and continue meeting lender requirements until final loan commitment is issued. Order appraisal; the value of the home must support the purchase price for loan approval. Schedule inspections; inspections should be performed to understand the condition of the home allowing ample time for negotiations and completion of repairs. Secure hazard insurance; insurance, effective day of closing, should be arranged and is a requirement of a loan. Search title; a thorough inspection of the chain of title is required before title insurance can be purchased; discovering title defects early in the

process, allows time to clear them. Open utility accounts; accounts should be in the buyer’s name as of the date of settlement. Perform final walk through; assess repairs and overall condition to ensure that agreed repairs have been made and that there are no other changes in condition. Sign docs and fund purchase; buyer must provide closing funds, sign documents, and record deed/lien documents before receiving keys and taking possession of the property. Don’t panic. If you have enlisted the help of a real estate professional, your representative will be coordinating and overseeing these tasks to reduce the risk of having the closing jeopardized or delayed. The Filling Station is the brainchild of business man Daryl Burgess, who just happens to have a thing for craft beer. Originally an Esso gas station built in 1936, the building sits at the traffic circle in Amherst. There’s a Marathon convenience on the other side, which Burgess also owns. It’s a line of work that runs in the family. “My dad is my idol and I truly owe everything I am to him,” Darryl says. “A hard working family man is what he has always been. He taught me values that are rare today. I am no better than anyone else but I can treat everyone I meet better than anyone else.” Translate that to convenient gas and local brews. Just inside the doors, lies a plethora of regionally and world wide made beer and hard cider. You won’t find shelves crammed with candy bars or bags of chips. Instead, expect a simple, no frills but beautifully basic menu of burgers, hot dogs, BBQ – and if you’re lucky – perhaps something new that Darryl is trying out for the menu. And if it’s just light munchies you’re looking for to accompany your beverage, you can order chips or fries with a myriad of seasonings for said munchies. Open since June, Daryl says the fuel and brew thing is catching on. “I tell my staff, the rule of thumb is four or more. If there’s at least four customers, you stay open.” Darryl’s got bigger plans for The Filling Station, plans he keeps close to himself. The station’s ample sized parking area may be a clue, as it holds potential for live music, and corn hole tournaments. Cheers to that! BRL

VALLEY ROAD

New vineyard locates at old amFOG site in Afton

Sometimes, it turns out that the best advice to get is none at all. Because if Stan Joynes, CEO and co-founder of the new Valley Road Vineyards, had spent some time asking what to do, well, let’s just say there’d be a lot less wine on Route 151. Stan (a former lawyer) and his wife, Barbara (an advertising executive), purchased the property that used to home AM Fog along with four other couples in early November and Stan – the only one of the 10 that works at the vineyard on the day-today – has been working at full speed ever since. “I think it would be fair to call it an all out sprint at 150mph with our hair on fire,” he said. “People in the business have asked us how we did this and, honest to goodness, the only reason we were able to do it was because I had no idea that I couldn’t!” Long-time wine lovers with a property at Wintergreen, Stan and Barbara started thinking it was time to do a little something else – maybe buy some land and grow a few grapes to sell – when the kids started going off to college. When they heard that Yvonne Harris, a personal friend, was looking to sell her property right off 151, the couple jumped on it. And with a prime location like that, they decided it would be silly just to grow the

grapes. They needed to do something with them! “We’ll not only do a vineyard, but we’re planning to take one of Yvonne’s buildings and turn it into a tasting room,” said Stan. “And maybe eventually turn the barn into a winery.” With big plans and no one to tell him something is impossible, Stan decided to start turning out wine right away. With no wine-making equipment yet, he turned to close friend and “angel from heaven” Ellen King, co-owner of King Family Vineyards. She offered her help as soon as she found out a new winery was coming to town and introduced Stan to King Family’s winemaker, Matthieu Finot. “Matthieu has become a great friend and mentor. He definitely knows what he’s dong,” said Stan. “He’s teaching me as much as he can and he’s just a fabulous person. And maybe the preeminent winemaker in Virginia. Certainly one of them.” Valley Road bottled its first wine in April – two whites, a blend, and two reds – and added three more, including a sparkling wine, in August. For those of us counting, that’s 8 wines in 10 months, something that any industry professional would have told Stan was impossible. Luckily, he didn’t ask. BRL

Estate Planning for Wartime Veterans and Their Families By Daniel L. Rutherford Rutherford Law Group, PC

Like all seniors, at some point most wartime veterans or their surviving spouses find themselves in need of long-term care. This situation often initially leads to the discovery that Medicare does not cover all of these costs and to anxiety over whether these costs will lead to the impoverishment of the veteran or his or her spouse. The only option appears to be to use the family’s savings to privately pay for the cost of a nursing home until no savings remain. Fortunately, this is simply not the case. Among options commonly reviewed, the VA’s Non-Service Connected Pension benefit is one that stands out. This program directly benefits wartime veterans or their surviving spouses by offsetting their long-term care costs. Sadly, this program is one of which many veterans and their families are unaware. Generally speaking, the VA Non-Service Connected Pension benefit requires that the veteran or the surviving spouse of a veteran meet the certain criteria. Assuming that the veteran or surviving spouse of the veteran meets the basic criteria above, the VA will then rate the disability level of the veteran or surviving spouse of the veteran as falling into one of three tiers. This rating is based on a physical evaluation prepared by a licensed medical professional and submitted to the VA along with the application. This rating also determines the amount of money that is available to the veteran or surviving spouse (see tables below for current monthly and annual amounts available through this benefit) through this program. A veteran does not need to have service-related injuries to qualify for the Non-Service Connected Pension benefit, but in addition to the basic requirements outlined above, he must also meet income and asset requirements. (A surviving spouse must also meet marriage requirements.) Income for VA Purposes must be less than the benefit amount for which the veteran or surviving spouse is eligible based on his or her disability rating, and the assets, or the total net worth of the applicant, must be minimal. It is important to talk to an Elder law attorney who understands the Non-Service Connected Pension benefit to see if the veteran or surviving spouse can qualify. Often, even if a veteran appears to have too much income or too much money, he can become eligible by structuring his assets or using other strategies. For example, it may be possible to reduce assets and income to a level that will be acceptable to the VA through asset conversions and the use of acceptable transfers. Excess liquid assets (such as cash or stocks) may be converted to an income stream through the use of an annuity or transferred into an irrevocable trust and thereby made non-countable for VA purposes. However, because the claimant may need to qualify for Medicaid in the future, it is critical that any restructuring or transferring of assets be done in a way that will not jeopardize or delay future Medicaid benefits. An Elder law attorney will be able to provide valuable assistance with these strategies. Special thanks to Jeremy L. Pryor, Esq. for contributing.

Shifting Gears to Fall It’s already September!
I certainly hope everyone has been getting out and making the most of the summer months. It started out overcast & rainy. Then most recently it’s turned to the summer we all know and can’t wait for cooler fall temps. I, for one, have not been letting the rubber cool on any of my treads & soles. The Virginia Off Road Series has been super busy the first half of the season. Our races, literally, across the state has seen some incredible competition. Regardless of age, gender, tall, short, everyone has been taking their shots at the podiums. Mountain bike racing is something I started doing in the early ‘90’s and it’s great to see it still going strong. We are starting to see more kids out racing their mountain bikes. You always kind of want to think kids won’t be able to keep up or have the skills necessary. Well that’s just not the case these days. These kids are

not having any issues with keeping up with their peers and/or parents. If you have kids that have an interest in mountain biking, the best way to get involved is to check out the Virginia High School MTB Series (spring) and/or NICA (fall). But back to the series, locally speaking, the Wintergreen Tread & Trail Series is also part of the Virginia Off Road Series. So come on out. We have plenty of racing to do! Other travels on the local front, we recently had a chance to catch up with Stable Craft Brewery owner Craig Nargi up near Waynesboro. He was generous enough to show us around the brewery, their horses and wedding venue. Apparently he’s quite the busy man these days with more than 40 weddings on the books for this year and 16 awesome beers on tap. The location is awesome with rolling landscape and views of the Blue Ridge from right there on the patio. Hmm…. September evening

up at Stable? Heck yeah! Let’s talk about some fall happenings. October will be here in a blink and that brings James River State Park to mind. We’ll have the Fall Festival and 5k Night Trail Run the weekend of October 15. Bring it on over to the Park and enjoy camping, Brunswick stew, music and fabulous night trail running. With just a touch over three miles, you’ll run by headlamp and maybe some moonlight by the James and through the hills. Plus, its just a great place to camp. And mark your calendars for November 5! The Virginia Off Road Series will be having its Champions Ceremony over at Bold Rock in Nellysford. We start the day hitting the trails with a few group rides. Then come and chill out in the Meadows behind the Cidery to talk, ride and take in the scenery as we give out awards. Wintergreen’s Trail & Tread Series with Bold Rock Hard Cider is in

full swing.
The next race weekend is falls on Columbus Day. It’s been a crazy race season up at Wintergreen Resort this year. We’ve had two weeks of fun, competitive trail running and mountain bike racing. There’s one race left to gain some points and possible walk away with some cash!

A Boulder of an Idea Large boulders are buried by contractors on job sites almost on a daily basis. The reason is quite simple – most homeowners prefer a clean landscape devoid of large rocks that seem more like litter than decorations. Nothing could be further from the truth. Large rocks have many unique applications in the landscape including everything from anchors to edging. With a little creativity and some elbow grease (and perhaps a mini excavator!), large rocks can move from the sub terrain to landscape accents that can literally take a landscape from hmmm to ahhhhhh! So bank those boulders during construction and let’s explore where and how to use them. The first and easiest method of using these rocks is just accents in the landscape. Mixing in large, medium and smaller rocks around the landscape can really add interest to a Blue Ridge design. We typically use these rocks in odd groups to anchor down landscape areas and then plant around them. In shady areas, we plant ferns, hellebore, variegated Solomon’s seal and other shade loving plants around the rocks to give it a natural touch. In sunny areas, you can equally add a unique touch by planting sun loving perennials around them including like black-eyed susans, coneflower, tickseed, daisies and many others. Try to keep the perennials in close proximity with the shorter perennials in the front and taller ones in the back. Also, try to plant your perennials in threes with the shorter or more narrow ones and in singles with the larger or wider ones. It is best to treat rocks like large evergreens – installing them in odd numbers and in a zigzag fashion. Lastly, don’t be afraid to get creative and have two resting on each other or putting a long flat one in the ground and hav-

ing one end come out of the ground like a boulder that was just too large to remove. Steps in the landscape can be both utilitarian, a way to go from a higher elevation to a lower one, and aesthetic as steps offer ‘eye candy’ that can draw the eye both down and out. Using these large rocks in this application is doable but also challenging since many of them can have some curvature to the face. The best way to handle this is to keep your steps with plenty of tread (run) and with no more than 6 inches of rise (fall). By using large rocks, the weight of the rock is largely the method for keeping them stable from rocking as one ascends or descends on them. Dig out the soil beneath the area and compact it with a tamp and then install your rocks. Obviously keep the flattest rocks for this application. A large arcing curve will always be more pleasing to the eye than a straight set of steps. Edging is an application for rocks that is really underutilized. Edging creates not only boundaries for wild versus tamed areas, but directs the eye to more desirable places that one would like to highlight and away from eye sores like power boxes and utility connections. The smaller rocks from the excavation serve this purpose well and offer easy installation for even the most amateur landscaper. Try to install your landscape edging in large arcs or radii that can literally be driven by an SUV – the more ebb and flow of your edging just creates chaos and ‘muddies the water’. The last application that we use these rocks for is retaining walls. With their sheer weight, these rocks can create structurally sound walls that will rarely need modifications and aid in the future. However, this application is not for the amateur landscaper as placement and stabilization of each rock is critical to a ‘dry lay’ landscape to remain sturdy and sound.

One of the best ways for student s to ensure that they are getting adequate physical activity is through high school sports. But sports have many other benefits. High school athletes are less likely to engage in risky or unhealthy behaviors. They have higher average GPAs than nonathletes and have lower school absentee rates.
