thepublishers The kids must be in the middle of a growth spurt because they’ve been sleeping in lately. And when I say that, I mean they haven’t been getting up before 7:00 am. That would be before our fabulously handsome state bird, the cardinal chooses to reveal himself to the awakening farm. Don’t get me wrong. Summer is beautiful here. The magnolia outside our bedroom is in full bloom and bees zig zag in and out of those big white blooms. Though loud at night and largely invisible during the day, the peepers are busy peeping after dinner, but not before the twinkling fireflies light up the fields. But oh, that Cardinal. Right around 5:still-too-early-45, the big red bird dive bombs into the window to my right. In a vein attempt to establish territory and position himself as Cardinal in Chief, he attacks his reflection – mistaking it for a competing suitor – slamming himself into the window, waking us up. Note to self: Clean windows attract insecure cardinals. Lesson: Don’t sweat a dusty window if you value sleep. Meanwhile, the cardinal’s cousin, the rooster, is a new baby daddy to two chicks. It’s been a few years

since we’ve had a broody hen and all of a sudden, half a dozen hens began guarding their clutches. Doing the math, the rooster has a 5% hit ratio. Don’t tell him that because every time he approaches a hen, his advances are from consensual and the truth of his shortcomings may break his cocky little heart. Our garden is coming in and this marks another year I have opted not to grow broccoli (Adam only eats it if it comes steamed in a takeout container from a Chinese restaurant). I considered growing it for approximately two seconds before Peyton weighed in: “Broccoli is the rock of poison.” Whichever cardinal marries her is marrying up. Enjoy! basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Wine Tasting Terms, Minerality It’s a steely, minerally Chablis... take a sip. Do you taste the chalky, stoney notes cavorting with the grape juice? Yes? Did the wine maker add limestone or marl to her wine? Like the term terroir, minerality is a tricky concept. When we say a wine is minerally or has minerality it means that the wine’s aroma or taste has the sensation of minerals: flint, gravel, schist, limestone or a certain salinity. Often these are wines made from vines grown in soil with a high percentage of stone, like limestone in Chablis or the llicorella in Priorat—versus clay or sand. Think of crushed oyster shells or chalk. But to answer the question: no, the wine maker didn’t add a dose of limestone or gravel to the wine to get that particular vibrant taste—yet it’s a perceptible flavor nonetheless. If trying to pick out mineral qualities in a wine (often easier to discern in white) close your eyes and open your imagination. The idea is that when you cut off one sense (visual) you intensify the others (smell, taste). Power of suggestion is strong so sim-

ply imagine the Devon slate of a Mosel Riesling or the silex of Sancerre. The easiest place to start is with wines such as the above; grapes like Sauvignon Blanc or Chenin Blanc are good candidates. Still struggling? Try this experiment: wet a stone, close your eyes and smell it. Taste it if you want. Try to identify what you smell. This exercise is good for warding off Alzheimer’s and growing brain cells. At least that’s my theory. Now taste your Sancerre. It probably tastes better than the rock. But now, because it’s summertime and we’re in the mood for light-hearted fun, enter those beautiful rosés. There is something distinctly minerally about a classic Côtes de Provence rosé. It is what I think allows these wines to be the pairing partners par excellence with the spicy Provençal or Niçoise cuisine: aïoli, farcis, petite fritures, oysters on the half shell. Esprit Gassier, Côtes de Provence 2017 (organic) – The special terroir of Sainte-Victoire gives this vibrant rosé a mineral depth. Lively with notes of peach and clementine, this

wine’s a winner all around. $18.99 Château Simone, Palette 2014 (organic) – From the tiny appellation of Palette 4 kilometres from Aix, and likewise influenced by the Mount Sainte-Victoire. The prestigious estate, owned by the Rougier family since 1830, produces reds, whites and rosés that can age. Earthy, amazing and complex. $64 Domaine Sorin, Terra Amata 2017 (organic) – Luc Sorin makes excellent, affordable wines, exemplified here with this blend of seven different grapes. Minerality overlaps with notes of blood orange and lemon blossom. $16.99 Tasca Regaleali Le Rose, 2017 (organic) – Not from Provence but rather Sicily, home to some of the most mineral-driven wines, perhaps because of the volcanic soil around Mount Etna. These wines exhibit earthy, stoney, herby qualities. Nerello Mascalese gives succulence and complexity to this zippy rosé. While the Tasca estate is in the Mt. Etna area, Regaleali, derived from the Arabic Rahal-ali or house of Ali, is just west. From a great wine estate, this is a bargain. $12.99

SEMPER FISH John Graham is a Marine on a mission to flood the foodscape with fresh fish.

BEDFORD

[ bedford county ]

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by YVETTE STAFFORD

Don’t let the Marine Corps sticker on the back of John Graham’s truck fool you. He’s on a different mission these days and Faolynn, his curly haired granddaughter toddling about, has a way of softening the edges of this airman-turned fish farmer. “There’s just something about the aquatic environment that just grabs me.” When’s he’s not sellng fish, the big white barn behind his house where he rasies them is where this Marine seems to meditate. John grew up in Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C. and spent plenty of time on the Chesapeake Bay. But he built a career navigating the skies, not the waters, flying attack helicopters during his “young, unafraid years” before the inevitable clipping of his wings, which meant spending more time in management as he finished out a 27-year long career. Even with a desk job, there was something about the water. “I just love aquariums. I can sit in an aquarium all day long and never be tired. There’s just something about it.” Retire to the Bay? That didn’t happen. Instead, John was recruited to Bedford to fill a teaching void in the school system. He was a math major and became Mr. Graham to his students. His wife, Kathy, fell in love with the area and so they stayed. But do the math, and Bedford is a good 200 miles away from the Chesapeake waters. Which brings us back to the barn behind the house.

“That’s one of the difficulties I’ve had over time. I’ve spoken before with people willing to talk to you, show you stuff, but when it comes to help, not so much.” John says he spent many years chatting with professors about aquaculture, the raising of fish for food. And even though the academic world had been very generous in fueling John’s interest in fish farming, creating an aquaculture operation in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of all places, attracted the skeptics. And when the locals learned of his plans, John says he got “the crazy Northerner look.” But from a practical, small business standpoint, farming fish in the barn behind his home — which doubles as a one-room bed & breakfast — made perfect sense. “Property values on the coast are pretty high. Trying to find an agriculture area on the coast isn’t easy,” John explains. “What I love about professors is they had all these easy answers but they never had to shell anything out of the pocket.” So John started small, and began building the fish tank system in December 2007. Before then, his work was theoretical and research-based, talking to academics and attending conferences. “Luckily there have been a lot of professors up and down the east coast who are willing to talk to you and show you what they do and how they do it, especially if you’re interested in a species that they are interested in.” continued on page 14

“A lot of their solutions are deep pocket solutions which a lot of small people don’t have.” And since Bedford is inland, he had to use a recirculating system capable of creating its own saltwater for one of the tanks. John takes me inside the barn, the home of a dizzying array of tanks and pipes that together recreate the complex aquatic environment required to raise healthy fish. He scoops some feed from a bucket and tosses it into the water, warning me that we’re about to get wet, as dozens of fish scramble to the surface. John says his no hormones/no antibiotics set-up produces 4000 pounds of fish each year including Black Sea Bass, Hybrid Striped Bass, Rainbow Trout, Tilapia and Catfish. In a typical aquatic environment, mother nature takes care of things. Here, John mimics nature as best he can, using culture tanks to grow the fish, as well as a series of filtration systems that optimize the nitrogen cycle, remove waste, and reduce viruses and bacteria impacts on fish using UV sterilization. It sounds like a mouthful but come Saturday morning, the fish leave their tanks and get packed into coolers.

As he rolls into the Nelson Farmers’ Market in his Dodge Ram, the fish he brings with him are fresh, resting on ice. This morning, his curly-haired granddaughter is totting about. As the world wakes up, vendors begin filling the tent and assembling their market tables. John will tell you that the great thing about farmers’ markets is the ability to interface with the customer, to establish a relationship. But it can get complicated. “In walks the Federal food safety people,” John says, holding back a sigh. “To sell a fish, you have to sell it whole, which is not a presentation Americans prefer … If you want to provide a fish processed, the series of regulations that you have to go through are onerous for a small business guy.” There are piles and piles of regulations that stand in between the fish John raises and a fish stick or fillet. In the year 2018, Americans can be mighty squeamish about buying food that looks back at them. “I had a 70-year old woman who would say, ‘I would clean fish with my granddad, I’m not doing it again.’” Fair enough. But John is appreciative of customers who get what he’s trying to do. “Our customer base right now are those people who appreciate a natural, fresh fish and they appreciate it because they know what one is. So they have some identification to the product. They can see the fish and they know what it looks like.” Little Faolynn is now hovering over a cooler of trout, poking them. Surely, there’s a fish stick in this pint-sized American’s future but for now, the fish in her world on this Saturday farmers’ market morning are bright eyed and slimy, raised by her loving Marine granddad who mans a different mission these days. Jerry Thornton is about to make a

Gigantic Leap Beginning July 1st, he’s leaving the big city universe of corporate finance to work on his family’s farm in Nelson County, hoping to make his mark in the world of hand-crafted dry ciders. And he’s made a good start. “I felt like I was watching my own life pass me by. You get paid a lot, but it’s not worth it,” he says. “I can work 60 hours a week in a mind-numbing job where you’re always dispensable, or I can work 12- hour days on the farm and feel a million times better at the end of the week.” His train of thought is derailed as a curly-headed four-year old rushes in for a hug. A single dad, this move will also give him more time for Gemma, who skips out the front door of the farmhouse to pick mulberries and find frogs with her grandmother. Thornton’s family has been in the county for a long time. His great great grandfather, Waller Massie, came home from the Civil War eager to throw his back into something other than battle. He added on to the simple cabin with hand-hewn timbers from what once prevalent but now seldom seen chestnut trees, hand milled from nearby forests, and then planted the first apple orchard. His great grandfather, R.L. Bryant continued to produce apples right up until 1969, when Hurricane Camille wiped out the orchard and washed away a good portion of the house and most of the buildings on the farm. continued on page 20

“My idea was to get back to the farm ... I wanted to find a sustainable source of income. So much of the family history is tied up on this piece of land – I don’t want to be the one to drop the ball.” – Jerry Thornton Bryant’s Small Batch Cider

Thornton’s grandmother spent much of her life returning the house and acreage to its present understated beauty, preserving the heart-pine floors that hadn’t washed away, lovingly replacing rooms and furniture that had. In one corner stands a restored cupboard that was recovered after being carried miles from home on raging streams. No stranger to the county, Thornton himself grew up traveling between the farm and DC, where his grandfather worked at the Pentagon. He attended school part time at Massies Mill and Fleetwood, then earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics and an MBA from George Mason University. His job as Director of Finance—budgeting, forecasting and managing an accounting team – couldn’t be further away from where he now wants to be. Why cider? “My idea was to get back to the farm,” he says. He speaks with a calm intensity; his posture conveys a quiet energy. “I wanted to find a sustainable source of income. So much of the family history is tied up on this piece of land -- I don’t want to be the one to drop the ball.” Much of the family acreage had been leased to Silver Creek Orchards, who planted the fields back to apples. Seeing the success of the adult beverage enterprises along 151, he began to scheme. “This is not the first time this farm has produced its alcoholic beverages,” he jokes. “Just the first time it will be legal.” Thornton began educating himself on the art and craft of making cider. He took some time off and attended a cider school in Geneva, New York, run by Cornell University. He’s finishing up a beer-making class at the University of Richmond, where he plans to apply some of his lessons to cider-making. So if his ciders tend more toward craft beers than sweet wine coolers, it’s understandable. And more interesting.

A farm garage built in 1946 is perfect for fermenting small batches of cider. He used to work on his cars in here, now he perfects a new trade. He walks up steep concrete steps and parts a canvas curtain to reveal the fermenting room, where the temperature is a chilly 61 degrees Fahrenheit. Much of the juice he buys from Silver Creek is pressed from apples grown on the farm. To that he adds the juice of cider apples. Each batch is processed using a slow three-step process. He doesn’t use juices or concentrates to overpower the natural taste of the apples. After two months in the tanks, the cider will be carbonated in the bottle with live yeast for a natural, unique flavor. No concentrates, no artificial flavors, no coloring. Just pure, dry cider. His “Chaider” is seasoned with organic chai spices, but don’t expect to be overpowered by these flavors. The subtle aftertaste of cinnamon, cardamom and ginger is such a delight, you won’t miss the sugary sweetness of commercial brands. “Unicorn Fuel” is infused with rose hips and hibiscus that impart a slight tartness and heft. Its bubbly rosiness looks lovely in the glass. For those who like a straight-head brew, “Brite Good” is enhanced with natural oak tannins for a clean, crisp finish. Clearly, Thornton is not afraid to try new things. This weekend he and his brewing assistant, Joey Dolinger, will be cutting up cucumbers and habaneros for a new small batch. For now, an awesome old Airstream trailer serves as the tasting room. Customers can buy a glass or a flight, sit outside on tented picnic tables and soak up a Nelson County afternoon. Future plans include converting the old white barn to a rustic facility for days with threatening weather. “We’ve only been open for three weeks,” Thornton says with a sigh, “and it’s rained each weekend.” Gemma races up. “Daddy! We picked a lot of mulberries for mulberry jam!” One look at her pink-stained face says that they’re delicious. Could a seasonal mulberry cider lurk somewhere in the future? Bryant’s Cider is opened Friday through Sunday. Make the short trip over scenic Brent’s Gap from Nellysford, or come up from the south, and follow the signs to Bryant’s Small Batch Cider. The smell of fresh cut hay and the distant lowing of cattle signal that you’re on a working farm. An arresting view of Three Ridges almost makes you forget why you came. Like Jerry Thornton, you’ll probably want to stay. BRL

Preparing for a Purchase The winding path to home ownership

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Proper purchaser preparation proves paramount…makes me recall the tongue twister Peter picked a peck of pickled peppers. Perhaps such a twister exemplifies what lies ahead. When it comes to home buying, the journey will possess many twists, turns, and potential roadblocks. Why not prepare? If properly executed, these tips can bring you home. Hire an Agent. This is the best of both worlds. You, the buyer, can get fully represented, while the seller foots the bill. As long as the property is listed, the seller is agreeing to pay the real estate commissions. Look for a referral from friends or if you don’t know anyone consider reviews on Zillow or other sources to ensure that you find a reputable and knowledgeable buyer’s agent. Know who the agent represents; discuss agency and get a written buyer broker

agreement to protect your best interests. Get Pre-Approved. Learn your budget capabilities and limitations. Have a lender review and verify your finances including credit rating, debt, assets, and income. Being pre-approved strengthens your position with a seller by validating that there should not be any financing obstacles. It can also help expedite the process for a quicker closing. Define your Needs. Set a timeline and determine wants and wishes. Differentiate from dream features and absolute must haves. Prioritizing will make your selection easier when presented with the realities of what is on the market. Search. Establish location parameters and begin searching. Consider things such as commute, conveniences, and community amenities. While location, location, location is important, be willing to flex. Getting the ideal house in your ideal

Marlo Allen

location within your ideal timeframe may be a bit unrealistic. Make an Offer. Now that you have found the place you want to call home, go get it! Have your agent review recent sales activity of similar homes, so that your offer reflects the current market. While price is critical, it is not the only deciding factor for a seller. Among other things, the offer should address conveyance of personal property, financing, deposit, settlement date, inspection period, and/or other requests or contingencies. Negotiate. Accept it, your offer may not get accepted as delivered. The seller may provide a counter offer. Negotiating is not a winner take all deal; it is a process that may involve compromise from all parties. When the contract is ratified, i.e., all parties agree to the terms, both sellers and buyers will hopefully feel good about the transaction terms which will

434-996-3525

increase the likelihood of the transaction closing. Stay on Track. With the guidance of your agent start checking off items on the post contract to-do list to ensure that all contractual deadlines are met. Stay on schedule; missing a critical component could cost you more than just the deposit. Pull Out a Chair. Don’t just unpack the table and chairs; sit, relax, and stay a spell. You should plan on calling this “home” for at least a few years, or more depending on the market, to realize appreciation and to recoup the cost of closing. Congratulations! Even though home buying may pose a few bumps in the road, crossing the finish line makes it all worthwhile. Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson County and helped found Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery of Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

PRAYERS ANSWERED Left rudderless after a traumatic Church split, the Coblentz family crafts a new life in Virginia.

The story of how the family Coblentz came to Amherst begins on an Amish dairy farm in Hartville, Ohio. That’s where a young Marvin Coblentz swung hammers and pounded nails at an early age, helping his dad build horse stalls. “I’ve always liked working with wood,” Marvin tells me from the office inside his workshop built on an old hayfield off Blue Ledge Loop. “When I was young, I would play with wood all the time. I had pigeons and whatever my hobbies were I would make stuff for them out of wood.” Even when the family moved to another Amish community in Michigan, Marvin’s love of woodworking continued. He got a job at a cabinet shop, met his wife Karen, and they started a family. After a stint in Missouri — by then, they had switched to a Mennonite church — they were back in Michigan where the family and business grew for 18 years. They had every reason to stay and every reason not to leave. But their church was experiencing a split and to Marvin, Christianity is “bigger than woodworking.” continued on page 31

He asked me if I had ever been persecuted because that’s what those days felt like to him. “We left because the church split and we were alone there so we needed to find fellowship.” Off in the distance, we hear the faint sounds of Marvin’s younger children playing. A few of the older ones are grown and out of the house. One of them is currently assisting with the Syrian refugee crisis. After a rainy spring, today the sun decided to come out and the vegetable garden the family has planted is proud and green. But it wasn’t long ago Marvin was a deacon without a church. “Sometimes it’s so big that you can’t make sense of it and I’ve even known people who’ve tried to make sense of it and had an emotional breakdown.” Those years were tough, Marvin said. He and Karen prayed for 5 of them. For half a decade, the cabinet shop hummed along — it did quite well, actually — but a man doesn’t intensely pray for guidance if he’s at peace. He reaches across the desk and pulls out his Bible, tucked in a leather pouch. Flipping to a verse in Hebrews, he reads: God, who at many times and in various manners spoke in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Has in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he has appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Clear as mud to a lapsed Catholic sitting in a Mennonite cabinet shop, Marvin closes the book and slides it aside. “God never left me when we went through the church split. It’s like going through persecution.” And to Marvin, the King James Bible is his life’s road map, though it didn’t explicitly tell him where to go or how to get there. “Well, we were praying for about five years. We asked the girls, ‘Where would you like to go?’ We have good friends in Virginia.’” continued on page 32

MAC’S Country Store They had met through Bible school so the family arranged a visit, complete with a meeting with the man who would be their new pastor should they be accepted into the community. “It’s a little weird,” Marvin admits. “[I] was a deacon so what was [I] trying to run from?” Put simply, Marvin disagreed with an elder in his old church and he wasn’t the only one. After what at first felt like an interrogation by the Virginia pastor, Marvin got back in his car to head back to Michigan, crying half of the trip back “I realized that this is very possibly where we’re supposed to move to,” Marvin said, as he saw his new home disappear in the rear view mirror. Things happened quickly once back in Michigan. The house sold in a matter of days. A motor home they owned found a new buyer on Craigslist within a matter of hours. With all signs pointing to Virginia, the family furiously worked to complete cabinetry for 16 kitchens that were already in the works for clients.

“I would say I am a get up and get moving person,” Karen says, taking a break from the children whom she homeschools. “If I see that [Marvin] puts his heart into something, that this is where God is taking us, I feel it is my calling and opportunity to bless him and pick up and move along.” Even when the ball from the hitch breaks off of the loaded trailer as you pull out of the driveway to your new home. In spite of the hiccup, Karen says the path was clear. “We had so many specific directions where God said, ‘Go!’ So why can you hold back?” Hoping to find a farmhouse, the Coblentzes instead found a hayfield. Marvin prayed and prayed on the new land before deciding where to break ground, for the soil here is different than in Michigan. At that moment, a man across the street approached to tell him to avoid the area he was considering, for a vein of blue stone would slow down construction. Sure enough, hidden underneath a thin layer of dirt and grass was an outcropping. “We knew it would be difficult to get started.” But it’s a similar story and one that’s been told for generations around the world. It’s the version outlined in Marvin’s Bible that he clings to, as well as some oral tradition regarding the family name. “Coblentz is an English spelling of Koblenz, which means confluence,” as in the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers, Marvin later explains in a text. “The first Koblenz was Abraham Koblenz, named after the town when his adoptive parents found him on their porch, covered in a blanket in a basket. They recognized him as a Jewish baby, the year was 1620. The first Coblentz we read about was from a reformed Church religion.” And as Marvin interprets it, his family’s exodus from Michigan to Virginia was driven by something grander than the business of custom cabinetry, and greater than himself. “I can truly say, my Boss or Father is a Jewish carpenter.” BRL

Mark explains the store will be expanding to the second floor of the building to purvey more of the furniture, great domestic paraphernalia, and Redwood line of scent diffusers, soaps, candles, room and linen sprays – an ever-expanding plethora of good news for the nose. There are two piles of irresistible merchandise growing on the counter. Redwood’s online presence makes it abundantly clear that they’re a long way from the all-American apple pie, pumpkin chai spice candle. The descriptor for the “Mission Fig” scent reads, The trip along the coast was something straight out of the movies. The road was wide open, as though made just for the two of you. Despite the heat, she insisted on leaving the top down; said it made her feel free. You glance over and there she is, arms in the air holding the very scarf that, just moments ago, held her hair perfectly in place. She was indeed free. As the wind tossed her auburn hair in every direction, the scent of sunshine, ripe figs, lily of the valley, and pure happiness captures your complete attention, and you lose yourself in the moment. It’s her. It’s always been her. Top: grapefruit + lemon + bergamot Heart: fig + peach + muguet Base: okume wood + patchouli + amber” The workroom for the candle cauldron has moved to a 2000 square foot space on Stoneburner Avenue just outside of downtown proper on Staunton’s up-and-coming west end. Once the Virginia Apple Commission’s office, the building has been through several transformations; the apple commission didn’t see this one coming. space. With a biology degree Matt’s at home with “candle science.” The space is appropriately called “The Lab” a sort of clean slate event space to incubate the ambitions of artisans, a sense of community, and good times for families. Monthly brunch pop-ups are what’s happening now. (Follow Redwood and Company on Facebook for current information.) It’s nearing lunchtime and Mark drifts off in a revelry of “That bourbon pecan maple waffle thing and chorizo hash.” Mark and Chris add there will be a bar where you can grab a drink, enjoy music, shop from a revolving group of artisans, and even have a go at some outdoor lawn games. Selling in nine states and 40 locations, as well as online, the demand for product production is high. A small room holds the candle and soap-making supplies. The soy wax is US sourced, the wicks are lead-free cotton, the packaging is made from recycled materials. Most of the oils lining an entire wall are organic and tracked down internationally. The consumer thinks of essential oils in tiny bottles with dropper tops. Mark holds a 24-ounce stainless steel bottle of French lavender oil, “This will last us a couple of months.” For the sake of perspective, it takes two rose petals to create one drop of oil. Currently Mark is working on design features for Staunton’s newest bed and breakfast, The Blackburn Inn. Not stopping at the visual, he’s developed a signature scent that will be featured in the rooms and sold exclusively at the inn. the bugs away. Not that a fly could hope to land on one of these guys. Mark, the red head, and his husband, Chris Wood (hence Redwood and Company, a moniker that stuck) have a five-year-old son. Chris co-founded and runs two national non-profits maintaining an office in Staunton and commuting weekly to DC where he serves on the FCC’s Diversity Committee. An arm of Chris’s work, www.poweronlgbt.org reaches out to the homeless community of LGBT youth who truly live on the street, about 650,000, because of lack of understanding and acceptance at home, or other circumstances. Taking in used tech devices, like phones and laptops, Power On plugs the alienated in. Chris says, “There’s nothing more powerful than being in front of a kid, a youth, and getting them a computer that allows them to get a job, that allows them to communicate with people who support them.” There’s a current of community vitality emanating from this triumvirate. They don’t choose to care, it comes straight from the heart. 20% of sales of their scent line “Midst the Hills” goes to a scholarship fund to send students to Stuart Hall in Staunton. Annually they select different causes to contribute sales to. One couldn’t possibly accuse the trio of burning the candle at both ends. Rather, to quote from their website, “Cover the Earth before it covers you,” seems to be the drive that keeps Redwood and Company growing. BRL

It’s About the Roots, Dummy For either small lawns or those that receive high traffic, it is really hard to beat sod. Starting with a medium that literally only needs water to survive, sod gives you the power to make a dramatic difference in your landscape in as little as a day and, equally important, gives your grass “staying power” since each roll of sod has so much top growth that it shades its own roots for a much greater chance of survival. Whereas seeding could take 2-3 years for establishment, sod is ready in weeks. I also like the fact that you can lay sod in interesting curves to add drama to an otherwise mundane lawn. The prep work is always the killer for those that have never laid sod before. Remove all existing vegetation and large rocks (golf ball size and larger) so as to get good sod/soil contact. The area should be relatively smooth and have all grades established so as to move surface water in the direction desired. Breaking up the ground down 2 inches will give the sod a loose medium in which to encourage root growth. It is best to add an inch of topsoil since it both allows for better moisture retention and is loaded with nutrients. Once the entire area is prepped, the area is then slightly compacted so as to prevent ruts in the lawn from foot/mower traffic. The day the sod is to be laid, apply pelletized lime to the entire area based on a soil sample. A leaf rake is then quickly moved over the entire area to scar the ground as well as remove any large dirt clods. Enough cannot be said about the contact of the sod’s roots and the soil – it is the difference in a beautiful lawn and erratic growth. As the sod arrives, the best case scenario is to have the sod laid immediately. If sodding a large area, prior measurements should have been done so as

asktheDr.

to have the pallets scattered based on the square footage on each. Typically, a pallet of sod holds around 500 square feet. Laying sod is a two-person job. One person places the rolled sod in a straight line perpendicular to the slope and the other person seats or lays the sod. It saves a lot of time if the person unloading the pallet has the edge of the roll facing the direction where the layer is working and the rolled end facing the direction they are going. By doing this, the person laying the sod can quickly unroll in the direction they are working. After you have started the first row, start the next row in the middle of a roll so as to prevent erosion and, equally important, allow the roots from the previous roll to aid in establishing the edge. A sharp spade will allow you to cut the sod as needed for the aforementioned process. Remember, keeping the sod tight, one roll to the other (side to side, end to end), prevents early moisture and heat stress and ensures a good sod job. Once the sod is laid, it is best to roll it with a drum roller to be sure that you have good sod/soil contact. After rolling, pull loose dirt or mulch (if neighboring a landscape bed) to all the perimeter edges to prevent the sun from baking those roots. A light feeding of fertilizer (ratio of 5-10-10) can now be applied. Now comes the most important part water. It is typically best to hand water the first time so it gets a good soaking – in particular the edges. Your best way to know how much water on your sod is to simply lift up some edges and be sure that both the sod roots and the underlying topsoil are moist/wet. Once the sod locks, or roots in, it will need around an inch of water each week.

Dear Dr. Cole, When I move my head the world turns upside down and spins out of control. Do I have cancer? Am I having a stroke? Is it a tumor? These are the questions my wife woke me up and asked in the middle of the night during her recent ordeal with vertigo! The answer to all 3 of these questions is ‘Probably no!’ Vertigo is a spinning sensation caused by a change in the position of your head. Along with the spinning you may experience nausea, vomiting or jerking eye movements. It sounds a lot like a ride on a roller coaster but not nearly as fun! While there are serious conditions that cause vertigo, it is often caused by a problem with your inner ears which help control balance. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is caused by crystals that form in the inner ear. A viral infection in the inner ear can cause dizziness. Meniere’s disease causes vertigo, ringing in the ears and hearing loss. Certain medications can cause dizziness. Vertigo can be very uncomfortable and disturbing but there are

treatments that can help. Vestibular rehab done by a physical therapist can help, especially if you have had recurrent episodes of vertigo. Sometimes medications are used to decrease the symptoms of dizziness and the nausea associated with it. Fluid pills may be used for Meniere’s disease. Exercises called Epley Maneuvers are effective to move the calcium deposits in the inner ear so they can be reabsorbed. These exercises involve moving through a series of positions. Dizziness is usually caused as you move from one position to another and care must be taken to avoid injury. There are many videos available on YouTube that show how they are done. Vertigo is common, uncomfortable and not fun. There are treatments available so talk to you doctor, or wake him up in the middle of the night if you are married to one!
