thepuplishers We’d like to say first of all that it was our full intention to ward off that skunk. We didn’t want a repeat of last year when we were awoken from our slumber to the boom of dad’s shotgun dispatching the critter that had killed all but one of the month-old meat flock. So when the familiar smell wafted into the house, and mom came out in her plaid jammies to feed us a late dinner, she soon realized we had gotten sprayed. She fed us anyway and for that, we are grateful. We are also grateful to be writing this puplishers’ statement on this priceless rag’s 12th year anniversary. In dog years, that comes out to 69. Pour me a dirty martini and lets party! A dozen years, a dozen eggs. The gals in the coop are cranking out a beautiful array these days. We’ve got dark chocolate brown, light brown, and even a green egg every other day or so. So if each egg represents a year of publication, let’s say this omelette will be full of flavor and a bit lumpy. Early on, this rag was cranking out double yolks, thanks to a booming real estate market. Then, we got a cracked egg, followed up with a few ordinary eggs, then BAM! Within the span of a few years, double yolks again, marking the birth of Adam and Peyton into

this world. And finally, a green egg when their parents made the decision to rebrand from Nelson County Life to Blue Ridge Life and print full color. That’s the year advertisers rejoiced, and rainbows and butterflies burst from the landscape. So folks, since the grown-ups won’t ever be so candid, here’s the plan: Momma keeps cranking out issues. Papa keeps nailing weather forecasts and expands the magazine’s electronic presence. Adam and Peyton engage in just enough mischief to inspire material yet keep themselves out of the ER. The hens keep cranking out eggs. That’s how we like it around here. Here’s to no skunks spoiling the party. Or if so, a loaded shotgun. Martina and Otis Stafford April Fools! APRIL 2017

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com April Fools Kay Pfaltz has been writing the April Fools column faithfully and foolishly for more than a decade, and this year decided to turn it over to someone more qualified, guest columnist, D.J. Dump, while she heads to France. Dear American consumers, I don’t drink wine. Never had a drink. That’s right, not one. And let me tell you, people ask me, and they ask me a lot, how can you rate wine if you don’t drink? I’m gonna tell you that not having any experience in something is not a reason you can’t do it. Not a reason. Okay? Believe me. If they say you can’t do it, they’re losers. Real losers. If there is hope for me, there is grope, I mean hope, for you, too. Wine snobs, what do they know? I’ll let you in on a secret, they’re a bunch of elites who couldn’t get a real job. That’s right, couldn’t get a real job. French wine is no good. I promise you. Just stay away from it. Stay away. Okay? Because why? Because France is all immigrants. Ninety-nine percent. No, really, I’m

telling you. It’s the truth. Don’t drink French wine. From this day forward it’s going to be only American wine first. American wine, that’s right. Drink American wine. It’s great. Really, really great. Great stuff. You’ll love it. I promise. Virginia wine is the best of all. One Virginia winery in particular. The winner of all. Hands down winner. But I can’t write about that one here. I know, ridiculous. Totally ridiculous. Great stuff, Virginia wine. Absolutely the best you’ve ever tasted. Ever. It’s just beautiful. I promise you. Go out and buy some right now. You don’t have to drink it. In fact, don’t drink it. Look at the Italians. Look at their economy. Disaster. They’re drinking all day long. Who cares if they’re happy? Are they rich? And the Spanish. Total disaster. And the French. What a complete and total mess. I can make wine better than anyone else. I have a plan to make the very, very best wine you’ve ever tasted. I have many, many plans. In fact plans you don’t even know about will be devised because I’m going to come up with a plan to make the best

wine, beautiful, beautiful wine, that will be so good. I will tell you at the time. The facts: White wine is best. Red wine is fine, too. Better than blue. Want a real drink? White Russians are good. Zinfandel – What I’ve been saying! Keep the infidels out. And the Zinfandels. They want in? Not going to happen. Pinot Noir – Pee-no, what kind of a name is that? Bathroom humour. Ridiculous. Use the bathroom of your gender at birth. “Noir.” French for black. I told you, stay away from France. They speak French, not English. Huge mistake. Yuge. We saved their butts. Twice. Not going to happen anymore. Pinot Grigio – “Grigio.” Sounds like a creature from the swamp. Clean it up! I don’t care what you’ve heard, I don’t drink orange wine. It’s a lie! Total scumbag lie. Tequila - Worst of all. I’m telling you, the very, very worst. Virginian wine is the greatest in the world. It’s great. Just great. Okay? Buy some today. Tweet, Tweet, tweet @happy April’s Fools from one who would know.

STORY by VICTORIA BEECHER GODFREY PHOTOGRAPHY by KATE SIMON

Chicano Boy “Essence is my favorite word and that’s what I’m searching for. The idea is to take everyone with me. That’s my thing.”

APRIL 2017

Blue Ridge LIFE

11

Thick jet-black hair and intense coal-dark eyes are just a hint of the passion of Manuel Borguez Padron Jr., known for most of his life as Justin Hershey. At Chicano Boy, in a modest strip mall on Central Avenue in Staunton, Hershey makes a home run slide into presenting a Mexican-American taqueria. The restaurant is closed for the day, obvious when the pizza delivery guy shows up, but the staff is assembled for the photo shoot. Wandering around I’m getting the impression of a hardworking, fun-loving bunch. Josh, a prep cook has his boa constrictor, Eve, draped around his neck. He describes working at Chicano Boy as “amazing.” Janice has a wellworn Muppet around her neck in memory of her brother, a Muppeteer. It’s an animated ensemble. Kate and I weren’t sure what to expect when we saw Hershey’s Facebook post asking if anyone had a flame thrower he could borrow for this day. Hershey’s father is Mexican, when his mother remarried she anglicized his name. Of his father Hershey says, “My father came in and out of my life.” Although they traveled to Mexico together for Hershey to explore his heritage “My father wasn’t an avenue, but food is.” However the journey was a little intimidating “because I’m not complete Mexican, because I don’t speak Spanish. That’s part of the Chicano identity in the United States. I think Cheech Marin is one of the most outspoken Chicanos as far as the culture. Marin said ‘I like cheeseburgers as much as I like Mexican food. English is my first language.’ It’s a strange niche in American culture.”

12

Blue Ridge LIFE

APRIL 2017

Originally from Merced, California, Hershey’s family moved to Stuarts Draft in 2003. “I come from a military family (stepfather) so I grew up all over the country. Every four years or so we’d move somewhere else.” Having recently turned 31 Hershey just tipped the scale of having spent more than half of his life in the restaurant business beginning in Staunton. Hershey says, “Modern chefs now – authenticity is dead – it’s an anathema. It’s a marketing ploy. There’s tradition, that’s different. Tradition is craft … I’m Mexican, but there are American sensibilities, like, ‘I want more meat.’” Said as he loads a fresh corn tortilla with Al Pastor.

“Al Pastor” is a personal preference of Hershey’s. He roasts pork shoulder, after cutting it into thin slices and rubbing it with guajillo chile and marinating it in pineapple juice. Then it is stacked on a trompo or vertical rotisserie roaster. The lean meat is cooked to tender perfection. Once roasted it makes a pass on the grill and is minced into bitesize morsels. “Pastor, it’s a lot of suffering,” says Hershey. The penetrating flavor speaks for the hours that go into it and for the chef’s dedication to the traditional craft of making it. As Hershey cracks open a can of Tecate we agree that what’s authentic is what’s on the plate. “I like to think that I design food.” Having attended The Florida Culinary Institute, working at Staunton Grocery, Zinc, and The Shack, gave Hershey the experience to “Design portion size, sauce integration, how it all plays out. How it’s supposed to hit. Using that education I’ve applied it to the business, the environment. I think that those things show in a positive way. That’s what creates the energy.”

The meats are succulent, the vegetables crisp, the sauces shout fresh (pickled pumpkin seed relish?!), the corn chips are no more than twenty minutes since fried. Hershey registers the predominant flavors of his Chicano cuisine, after admitting he’s a Francophile at heart. “Chiles, white onion and citrus juices.” For those wary of spicy food the heat level is moderate but the tables are stocked with hot sauces to warm things up to taste. There is an immediacy about the place, a good one. The jefe is at the helm over the lunch hour starting at 11. The restaurant is bustling; customers come in for take-out orders. The service is fast, although the ingredients are labor intensive. The atmosphere is casual and bubbly. The community is eating it up. Hershey says, “The town was my first priority. If you can’t win the town, what have you got?”

On a secluded pond, enjoy the peaceful, tranquil reflection of the sunlight shimmering on the pond, and the changing colors of the waterfront. Golf course is nearby, and long range views of the mountains and course are visible from the front of the lot. This site is unusually large and wide at the entry, offering great flexibility in the siting of a home. Gentle slope makes it suitable for a home with terrace level. Towering hardwoods provide a great shady canopy and a dramatic backdrop for a special new home. Central water and sewer are available. This is a premium lot.

The door closes at 2 and the morning shift overlaps with the night shift in what appears to be a well-choreographed fraternity. The morning crew is wrapping up by pressing out corn tortillas for the evening laughing and singing along to Motown songs. Done twice a day this may total 500 tortillas. Bill Willet, owner of Newtown Baking in Staunton, mixes the masa, a traditional Mexican corn flour, for Hershey every day the bakery is open. Hershey also works as chef/pizzaiolo for Newtown Baking, offering a dinner menu of his creation based on pizza baked in a wood-fired oven. To manage this requires a reliable team. Hershey says of his staff, “They’re all youthful, they’re all talented. To me it was important to hire people who had some kind of passion for life, even if it wasn’t about food. So we have farmers, musicians, and some younger folks whose parents are deeply rooted in the community. I’ve got a lot of Eagle Scouts, Nate and Mason, Matt at Newtown; they all have an amazing work ethic. Those are some conservative values that I really appreciate, not being an Eagle Scout, but coming from a military background.” Diversity seems to be what Justin Hershey is all about, but he says, “Coming from a French restaurant to a New-American Italian pizzeria, to a Mexican restaurant, you see the similarities more than the differences.” “The more that we think we’re different, that’s a very divisive thing. I always like to think that we’re really all alike on a global level, our nature. So if you can look at one cuisine and though it’s not directly related to another you can find the same patterns that naturally progressed. You can see it in an abstract and broader sense. You can see the relationship. Deliciousness is the larger truth.” BRL

Hiking the entire length of the Appalachian Trail seemed like a great reason for Jill Byrd to quit her job of 33 years as an accountant. “I gave them seven years notice.” It’s the right thing to do when you’ve been part of a small business for such a long time. Virginia Panel Corporation makes electronic connectors in Waynesboro and if Jill was going to hike the AT, she would have to quit and reinvent her future. “‘Hey, I’m going to change my retirement plans’ – which were none – ‘I’m so healthy, I can work until I’m 70.’ No! I’ve got to go out at 62!” Jill and I met up near “the popcorn place” at the top of Afton Mountain, this magical spot where the Blue Ridge Parkway, Skyline Drive and the Appalachian Trail converge. She pulled up in a well-driven Nissan pickup wearing a red bandana, her Corgi/Border Collie mix Zobbie riding shotgun. “She can hike 5 miles but 10 miles kills her.” Someone needed to keep Jill’s husband, Tim, company anyway. Spanning some 2200 miles from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Katahdin, Maine, Jill trekked the AT in 6-and-a-half months. Not bad for someone who spent her childhood playing outside near Woodstock, New York. She was a Girl Scout and later became a Girl Scout leader when her daughter came of age. That’s when they took a backpacking course and completed a 10-mile hike. Then things escalated.

20

Blue Ridge LIFE

APRIL 2017

“In 2005, my husband got the brainy idea of ‘lets go backpacking.’” As in, spending their family vacation backpacking. They borrowed all of their equipment and figured if they started in Elkton, they could hike the 32 miles home to Crimora. It was miserable. “The equipment wasn’t right, didn’t fit right. The shoes weren’t right. It was the heat of August. It was awful. We did eight miles a day for four days and I was so done.” But the backpacking bug bit again when her daughter convinced her to do a 50 mile stretch to Damascus, Virginia. “I was hooked. That did it.” By that point, Jill was immersing herself in the hiker culture, offering up her home to her daughter and her slackpacker friends (Slackpacking is backpacking with a lightened load since you don’t have to pack tent gear). Between 2007 and 2011, Jill hiked a week on the trail every year. She limited her hiking from 2011 to 2016 as she began riding her bike 17 miles a day to work, round trip. As the winter of 2016 waned, Jill’s first day on the trail approached. In her first taste of “trail magic” – lucky things hikers experience on the trail – some friends drove her down from Virginia to her starting point in Georgia, dropping her off at the hiker hostel. Day one was March 18, 2016. “I was thinking that night, ‘What have I gotten myself into?’” She had broken her leg two years prior and that could have been an issue. “I did not sleep well that night.” But day one turned into day 2 and Jill soon grew into her trail name, IWOX, a play on “walk” and her middle name, Roxanne. ITOX (talk) would have been just as appropriate. “I’m very social so I talk to everybody on the trail,” Jill admits. “Everybody who was so worried about me hiking alone, I never hiked one day alone. Not one.”

She met her first hiking partner, Ken, a guy from Lawrence, Michigan, five miles in. He was much faster than she was but his back gave out after a month and he had to go home. Jill also chatted up a man from Greenfield, Indiana who had hiked the AT before but said he had hiked it too fast. This time, he wanted it to be a party. “I ended up hiking with him for four and-a-half months and we’re great friends.” By summer, she was hiking familiar mountains as she approached Waynesboro. She took a few “zero days” off the trail to regroup and recharge, including dinner at Ming Garden, and a gear stop at Rockfish Gap Outfitters for new shoes. And as a presidential primary season heated up, Jill’s attention was miles away from the election. “Every once in a while we’d hear crazy stuff. We did not talk politics. We just didn’t.” Because when you spend your days with people like Chicken Feet, Spicy, Mountain Goat, Lolligag, and Little Rhino, the campaign trail seems boring. It’s all about the Appalachian Trail and a battleground state was ahead of her. Pennsylvania has a reputation for being “horrible” because of the rocks, but Jill was with five gentlemen who were far from horrible. “We were having fun. We were sharing our miseries together and that was fun. Such as staying at the Doyle.” Ah, the Doyle. Hikers say it’s the diveyest of dives. “It’s got great food but a horrible place to stay and it was.” The rooms were covered with spider webs and the carpet was dirty. “It could have been Kitty’s Saloon in Dodge City, but we laughed and had such a great time.” By mid September, Jill and her gang had managed to cross into the last state on the trail. Probably because she was getting antsy, Jill says if she were to do it again, she wouldn’t “rush through Maine.” On October 3, Jill set out at 7 am to summit Katahdin with Poophands. You know the end is near when you’re with Poophands. “I cried like a baby,” according to Jill’s journal entry. “The dam broke and I cried the last quarter mile up to the sign.” IWOX earned her official AT hiker number: 1040. A fitting number for an accountant who quit her familiar job at a company that makes electrical connectors, to forge new connections on a storied trail with perfect strangers.

“For me it’s the people. And the hikiing is the mode by which I met my people. And I had approximately 20 people that I hiked with along the way and I consider every one of them a fantastic friend.” BRL

Who is ... ? Identifying with home buyers and sellers

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

While the Nelson County real estate market is stabilizing, one would still consider this a buyer’s market. There are currently 261 residential properties for sale providing buyers with a lot of options. Hence, there is a need for buyers to carefully weed through choices, and sellers to position their property to stand out in the competition. Statistical findings from the 2016 National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers may help market participants better understand one another and develop a more customer centric approach to buying and selling. Here are the report highlights. Characteristics of Home Buyers; 82% of homebuyers view their home purchase as a good financial investment; 35% of all home buyers were first-time buyers which is up by 3% from a year ago; Gen Y or Millennials born between 1980

and 1998 account for 34% of all home buyers; 66% of buyers were married couples; 17% of buyers were single females. 11% of buyers purchased a multi-generational home due to cost savings with adult children or aging parents moving in; buyers expect to live in their home for a median of 12 years. Characteristics of Homes Purchased; the typical home purchased was 1,900 sq ft with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms; 83% of buyers purchased a detached single-family home; new homes accounted for 14% of sales leaving 86% buying a previously owned home; 32% of those buyers chose a previously owned home because they thought it to be a better price. The Home Search Process; 95% of home buyers used the Internet; buyers searched an average of 10 weeks and viewed 10 homes; Where buyers found the home they purchased: Internet 51%, real estate

Home Buying and Real Estate Professionals; 88% of buyers purchased their home through a real estate agent; 42% of buyers found their agent through a referral from a friend or family member and 11% used an agent that they had previously used. Financing the Home Purchase; 88% of buyers financed their home purchase and on average borrowed 90% of the purchase price; first time home buyers typically financed 96% of the purchase price. Characteristics of Home Sellers; The typical seller lived in their home for 10 years (From 19872008 the typical tenure was only 6 years.); Gen Xers born between 1965 and 1979 represented the largest population of sellers at 29%; the

Older Baby Boomers born between 1946 and 1954 represented the second largest selling population at 21%; The most common reasons for selling were: too small 18%, move closer to family/friends 15%, and job relocation 14%. Home Selling and Real Estate Professionals; 89% of sellers were assisted by a real estate agent; 39% of sellers found their agent through a referral by friends or family; 25% used an agent that they previously worked with to buy or sell; 70% of home sellers only interviewed one agent prior to listing. Understanding the market participants can lead to a more successful buying and selling experience! Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. Register online PharsaliaEvents.com Barry Wood, Owner and Operator of Wood Ridge Brewery, isn’t afraid of getting his hands dirty… or his feet. Known by the staff as “Barefoot Barry”, he can be seen working around the farm and brewery sans shoes. One could even be so bold as to say he has a special connection to the dirt and the land he’s built his business on. “The farm’s been in the family since the late 1800’s. I moved back about seventeen years ago and just started playing, trying to find a two-row barley that would grow on the east coast for malting.” After successfully growing and distributing his product to the surrounding distilleries, the supply of house-malted barley was still so great, it demanded another market. That’s when Barry decided to use it himself. He built a 300-acre man cave that sits in the middle of a huge field with nothing but rolling hills in the distance. The two floors of raw lumber give the taproom the feeling of an adult treehouse, and the moose antlers that line the walls really only adds to the ambiance. “It’s dirt to glass and farm to table. Otherwise I wouldn’t be doing it,” says Barry. He’s donning a black cowboy hat with a flashlight clipped to the brim which he calls his winter hat. “I’d have no interest in owning a brewery or a restaurant or anything else, other than the fact that it comes from this farm.” continued on page 32

“A lot of people talk about ‘local’ and how it’s a hip word, it’s hip to be local,” tells Chris. “Well here, it’s all on the farm. You can see all the ingredients from your bar stool.” – Chris Firey Head Brewer, Wood Ridge Farm Brewery Complete with a malting house, brewery, greenhouses containing palm trees for the summer, cows, chickens, a dog and even a few peacocks – this place is the definition of wild. There’s even a landing strip out back for those who promise not to drink and fly. “I grow two kinds of wheat, four kinds of barley, oats, and rye” explains Barry. “So with that, there’s so many different combinations and in order to focus and showcase any one of those grains, that’s seven or eight beers right there. It’s a big process.” Chris Firey, Head Brewer, dove right into the deep end of the beerfilled pool, creating an impressive 18 varieties in the six short months he’s been at Wood Ridge, all with ingredients straight from the property. “A lot of people talk about ‘local’ and how it’s a hip word, it’s hip to be local,” tells Chris. “Well here, it’s all on the farm. You can see all the ingredients from your bar stool – Now that’s local!” Beginning his brewery education and career in 1999, Chris is pretty familiar with the feeling of a pint glass in his hand. And bridging the gap from brewery to bar, his fiancé, Paige is serving the beer her beau creates. “I’m the tap room manager, but I dabble in some of the brewing process,” Paige tells me. “I also get a bit of background of what beers are coming up next. And I get to help with input from the customers and what they could be looking for.”

Brady S. Nicks Attorney-at-Law,

Once I got my beer from Paige – I went with the Alt Beer – the next logical step was to visit the food truck conveniently located out back. “Fired Up” is a permanent fixture on the property, open Thursday through Sunday and ready to pair your beer with some greasy goodness. I got the cheeseburger and onion rings, and it did not disappoint. “By the spring we’ll have that going all week long,” Barry says. “It’s all our Angus beef for the burgers, the steak and cheese, all that. We don’t raise our chickens to slaughter, they just produce eggs. And we’ll have our soon-to-be bakery making all our rolls here soon.” By the summer there will be barbecue pits and whole hog cookers on the lawn, right next to the corn hole boards and horse shoes. One thing’s for sure, this brewery and its employees have their feet firmly planted in the property, and the locals are more than happy to support such a business. With more than a dozen beverage options to choose from, a food truck, and plenty of entertainment, there is literally something for everyone at Wood Ridge Farm Brewery. And as the sun set on the Wood land, the temperatures dropped, the animals took shelter, and Barry found his shoes. “I’m almost out of beer,” he said to me, “And you probably need one.” BRL

SIP & SMOKE There’s a new place to do it and it’s called The Shanty.

APRIL 2017

Blue Ridge LIFE

35

It’s a weirdly warm winter night and much of Wintergreen’s aprés ski crowd has driven down the mountain and is now cupping pints under the glow of campfires and stringed lights bouncing over them in the patio. If there ever was a winter heat wave festival, this may be what it looks like. “Eeeee-vette!” Emerging from a dark corner behind The Outdoor Grill is Devils Backbone CEO Steve Crandall, wearing his trademark Carharrt vest and holding a beer. He’s sporting a Kung-Fu mustache these days. We make our way to a 16 x 36 foot building dubbed The Shanty, built to look like it could store tractor implements and gas cans. Or liquor, rare beers, and fine cigars. Annick Canevet is behind the bar and pours me a bourbon neat. On the beer taps are rarities like Cocoa Danzig and Tectonics Barley Wine. Steve is still nursing his beer put picks out a cigar from the humidor. We clink glasses and settle into a cozy square table in the corner where Steve’s friend Jeff has joined us. We start talking about the walls in this place, which look familiar. “The walls are this old recycled flooring that we at one time ... this is the third time it’s been used,” Steve said. They began as massive joists in a tobacco barn before being split in half and turned into flooring for the brew pub. But when the pub had some water damage, the floors had to be torn out. Because the tongues and grooves had to be cut out, the boards’ future was uncertain and they ended up sitting in Steve’s barn. “That door right there, I ripped out of a house I tore down at Wintergreen,” pointing at the wall across from us. Before getting into craft beer, Steve made a career as a home builder. “Those windows came out of an old house that I tore down. I mean, I’ve got barns full of stuff like this.” He takes another sip. “We wanted it to feel slapped together. It’s The Shanty!” 36

Blue Ridge LIFE

APRIL 2017

A few more folks trickle in, and the embellishing begins which means it’s time for some truth: Behind every man cave is a woman. In this case, that woman is Steve’s wife, Heidi, who has tempered much of Steve’s masculine, hunter-themed aesthetic with softer, period appropriate touches. Take for example, the seating. Steve wanted it to be lush and rustically opulent, ideally sitting under the shadow of a dead animal he’s hunted. Heidi put her foot down and went antiquing. “We’ve gotten a lot of it from Tuckahoe Antiques and [owners] Rick and Sarah Ovenshire.” She came back with small and intimate farm tables. The seats are minimalist but comfy. “We’ve realized it can be a man cave, it can be a craft building, it can be a cabin, almost anything.” Steve nods in agreement, an innate reaction he’s learned after being married nearly 32 years and raising three kids, all of which are now grown. He points to the ceiling and the Edison bulbs in the repurposed (slapped together!) fixtures.

Purchase both the house and lot for an extra large piece of heaven for a fantastic price. Carrie Stevens whizzes behind the bar at The Shanty, a small shedlike building at the Devils Backbone Basecamp in Beech Grove. Her partner-in-crime, fellow bartender Annick Canevet (not pictured), filled her shoes the night of the story as Carrie recuperated from a nasty, nasty bug. The author had the dim idea to assume her inferior smartphone could take decent pictures that day. The good news is BRL photographer Hayley Osborne has the good gear and blessed us with her photography a few days later.

“Those chicken feeders, we used on our farm for years and years!” It’s a blatant alternative fact and we laugh it off. “l’ll be really honest with you, I haven’t had much bourbon or whiskey in the last eight years. It’s been all beer. I love beer. I sleep with beer bottles in my bed.” Figuratively speaking, he’s right. Recently acquired by AnheuserBusch InBev, Devils Backbone’s focus remains as a beer powerhouse. Consider the Shanty the architectural preamble to the company’s plans for a distillery, Anheuser-Busch’s first. “The distillery is a very small adjunct to what we’re offering and what we’re doing. It’s all about the beer but the beer has allowed us to build a very cool distillery.” Brian Shanks, owner of nearby Bold Rock Hard Cider, walks in with a friend who shares the same unmistakable New Zealand accent. Annick has just stoked the fire in the wood stove and the volume in this small space gets louder. The dimly lit, smoky, boozy scene is a snapshot of the craft brewing and distilling movement taking place in Nelson County. Steve says the company’s foray into spirits is a natural progression. “There’s a very neat collaborative transfer of DNA between distilling and brewing. Jason Oliver – our illustrious brewmaster – is going to be heading up the distilling operation. For him it’s exciting. It’s another challenge.” A pair of firefighters from Miami walk in. Steve met them the other day on an airplane and after discovering they were beer nerds, he told them to visit the Shanty as they brew-hopped their way along Nelson’s 151. Another small group of people walks in and my phone vibrates with a text from my husband. Something about one of the kids squirting out the entire bottle of shampoo in the tub. “Time to go and be mom again,” I say as I leave Heidi to fend for herself as one of only a handful of women in this man cave. Out I go, disappearing into the weirdly warm night, leaving behind not the Shanty, but The Shanty! BRL

There’s an Afghani man in the lobby of MACAA headquarters in Charlottesville whose bright eyes and wide smile could signal one of two things: It’s Friday and he’s here to pick up his two little girls from the agency’s HeadStart program. “We are getting an increasing number of refugee families and just international families and so the number of languages spoken in our HeadStart classroom is great right now,” reveals Harriet Kaplan, the Executive Director of MACAA and the director of its HeadStart program. “It used to be that it was Spanish and English ... but we are challenged with people who speak Farsi and Arabic.” The father’s words reveal the accent of a man who has spent more than 2-and-a-half years waiting for clearance to enter the country legally. His English is slow and deliberate but not nonexistent. “It’s particularly challenging for the parents, less so for the children,” Harriet explains. Just outside of the HeadStart building is a colorful playground, deserted during a particularly chilly and windy afternoon. “Play is a universal language so the children come into the classroom and they may not be speaking fluently but they know how to play with one another. So they play together and they pick it up.” Eradicating poverty is an ambitious goal but one at the core of MACAA’s roots which span a good 50 years. The organization was much larger back in the 1960’s, ‘70s and ‘80s, but had to reinvent itself after federal funding shrunk. An incubator for several anti-poverty programs, MACAA spun off JABA and CHIP, area social service programs aimed at senior citizens and families. At Rockfish River Elementary, the HeadStart program isn’t fully attended and Kaplan admits filling that classroom has been a challenge. “There are parents and a lot of times there are grandparents who don’t think that children ages 3 and 4 are old enough to go to school.” Not everyone is on the early school bandwagon and for many, having family raise and care for the littles is considered a fortunate circumstance. (Full disclosure: though the author attended preschool, her children didn’t and are instead homeschooled). But for parents who are open to it, Kaplan wants them to know it’s always an option. “If we could sit down on the front porch with a glass of sweet tea with all the folks out there in Nelson County and explain how really important that early education is to the later success, I think that we would be in a better position.” BRL

Race Construct So did you have fun at that last 5k, 10k, half marathon, 100 mile mountain bike race, or 3-day stage race? We hope so because do you know what we had to do to make it happen? Races are like icebergs. The race is only about 10% of what it took to create and execute the event. Let’s say in the beginning, a brewery decided to have a race. The initial questions: How far? What’s the course? Is there a cause or charity? Will there be food and/or beverage? Fun run or a race? Will there be music? T-shirts? Medals? Prizes? Let’s use a race I used to put on at Devils Backbone, our Trail Run Series a few back. The one thing I really enjoyed about working with Steve Crandall, Chris Trotter and crew was that the sky was the limit. Our themes and thoughts were all over the place: Let’s do a night run, Mardi Gras, St Paddy’s Day. And we actually did them all and more.

We then set out a course in the surrounding Meadows. We had plenty of space and unique land features. We just had to figure out what would be the funniest route. The first year, we flagged and literally ran with it. Then Travis Book moved into the area and the boy ran crazy with trail designs. Course design and setup can take an enormous amount of time, money and sweat. You now have a course. Great! Then you start designing t-shirts, bibs, marketing material, course maps, and so forth. Another important part is to insure the event in case something goes awry. And as a race director, you have to really think over what could go wrong during an event and then hope none of it comes to fruition. There are literally a million moving parts to a race event and the race director has to keep an eye on all of them. Is this a fun run or a race? For a race, you’ll also need timing.

If you do chip, then you have to put the chip on the bib. Otherwise you’ll need a few good eyeballs to mark everyone as they cross the finish line. You’ll also need to know your EMS/ Police numbers and locations. Don’t forget the waiver. You survived the race. You’re not done yet! Then there’s the fun post-race gathering. I have to say Trotter always had something good cooking, figuratively and literally. The DB Crew had the best food and beverage (I guess the medals say a little bit about the beverage side). So you need food, employees and brews for the race. Awards? You can reach out and gather some sponsors to help with that. Which means more phone calls, emails, smoke signals. Then you have the call ups and all the applause and shout outs for their achievements. Then the post-race starts to unwind and everyone heads on home.

Are you done? Not yet! Gather your crew for one last round of course cleanup & race breakdown/follow-up. There’s a course that was setup to challenge everyone to a good race. Now you get to put it back like you found it. Course flagging & tape need to be taken down. Next, you need to post results on your website or social media page. Then follow up with everyone who was involved. All this takes about 3-4 weeks to put together and the event lasts about three hours when it is all said and done. Now, what did I forget? Oh, the race date! Take Me to Your Leader For many plants, the presence of multiple leaders doesn’t have any real effect on the overall performance of the tree or shrub, even from environmental factors. In many cases, multiple leaders are encouraged to allow for a broader, thicker plant with a vertical profile that one would expect from the plant. From a nursery production point of view, more leaders leads to greater greenhouse turnover and profit. However in the landscape, these same genus with multiple leaders are a liability for the home gardener. The reasons are mostly that multiple leaders on plants in a Zone 5 climate offer greater surface area for snow or ice to collect on the leaders and break them, and multiple leaders also leads to a broken vertical profile that deviates from the natural shape of the species. Here are some that have these issues, along with methods to control the problem. Boxwood breeding and production has skyrocketed in the past two decades. Grandma’s English and American have long since been shelved for countless other varieties that grow slower, smaller and in shapes that are typically not found in this genus. Of these newer varieties, Dee Runk and Fastigiata are two that offer an interesting conical shape that moves boxwood from the border to anchoring the front door. Both of these varieties are often sold with multiple cuttings in order to fill out a container more quickly and therefore shorten the growing time at the nursery. As the plant grows, these multiple leaders will eventually open in the vertical canopy and are susceptible to breakage in snow and ice situations. Control is often best if caught early in the life of the plant. A simple cut on the entire smaller or less full leader on the lower part of the canopy, 2-3 feet from the ground,

removes the competition and will allow sun to penetrate and encourage growth. On larger plants, the same process can be done but usually is less noticeable if the cut is done about 2/3 the way up the plant. It should also be noted that a pair of hedge shears will also be required in order to prune some of the side shoots in order to reestablish the conical shape. Arborvitae are another group of plants that have a similar issue, in particular, the Emerald Green Arborvitae. Growing to around 12-15 feet tall with a 2-3 foot width, this plant also can find itself in some very up close and personal space in relation to the home or visitors. Plagued by a similar problem as the aforementioned boxwood, pruning cuts are also important on them in order to maintain a single trunk and eliminate multiple leaders with poor vertical profiles. As with the boxwood, early detection is even more critical since they grow slowly and therefore the recovery time can be longer. Similar cuts found on the boxwood can be done, however, avoid the hedge shears and just allow the new shoots on the desired leader to fill in the void area. One of the more underused but highly valuable trees that can also have issues with multiple leaders is the Deodar Cedar. Growing to more than 40 feet in height with a 20 foot skirt, the Deodar cedar has a graceful, almost drooping appearance with a welcoming blue-tinged evergreen foliage. Although typically found on the outskirts of the landscape due to its monstrous size, the desired form is totally lost with multiple leaders. Early detection, again, is key. Removal of the competing leaders is encouraged, however, often times they can sucker later in life and require an arborist to control the growth. Even with this pending issue, I consider this tree to be in my top ten list of large evergreen trees.

Oh that is no fun. You never know how much you appreciate walking on normal toes until one starts to hurt! An ingrown toenail is simply a nail that has grown into the skin that is supposed to be beside it. Often times that skin then gets swollen, red, painful, and even infected. It usually happens when a toenail is cut to short, or cut rounded off at the corners such that the nail can grow into the neighboring skin, if shoes are too tight around the toes, or if there has been a trauma to the toe. If you see this starting to happen, you can begin soaking the affected toe several times per day, and try to manually peal the skin back off of the nail after the soaks. If you can gently expose the corner of the nail, placing a few strands from a cotton ball under that corner can help it stay out from under the skin. I would advise you not to use any tools to try to “dig out the nail” as often I see more harm than good done when people try this. If your skin starts to get red, pain-

ful, swollen, and begins to drain pus and blood, then you probably should see your doctor. Sometimes antibiotics are needed. Often, a minor surgery that can be done in the office can help a lot. The doctor can numb the toe and remove part of or the entire nail. While we do have ways of helping this problem, as with most medical things avoiding it in the first place is really your best bet. Don’t wear shoes that are tight around your toes. Don’t cut your toe nails too short. Try and be sure to cut them straight across the top. Being overweight is a risk factor for ingrown toenails. If you weight is up, try working on cutting calories and increasing exercise to burn calories to get the weight down. If a problem starts with a toenail, address it quickly. And lastly, if you have read this far, and don’t have ingrown nails, be thankful for your healthy feet!
