This mountain getaway backs up to the George Washington National Forest, offering plenty of protection and privacy. The home was thoughtfully designed and built by current/original owners, and has been immaculately maintained and updated since. There are 3 master suites, each with its own full bathroom and private deck access. Sprawling gardens and paths surround the home, it’s landscaped beautifully…a rarity on the mountain. Stone lined, level driveway and parking area. The stone fireplace has a beautiful gas log insert, but it can easily be removed if the new owner prefers to revert back to authentic woodburning. One level mtn living with charm!

Thomas Jefferson liked octagonal homes and he was a wise man. Own a Jefferson style home on the ski slopes. Located at the top of Tyro with views of the ski slope and the Blue Ridge Mountain. Bright and open floor plan. Nicely updated kitchen. 2 bedrooms and 2 full baths on the main floor. A bedroom/ den with a full bath on the lower level. Homes like this one, on the top of Tyro and only a few steps away from the ski lift and Eagles Swoop, rarely come on the market. Take the opportunity to lock this property in for your family for the next ski season.

Great resort home adjacent to a million acres of George Washington National Forest with no neighbor on one side for additional privacy. Well maintained and updated with 5 bedrooms and 3 and a half baths. Multiple decks including a screen porch and a hot tub facing into the wilderness. Since purchase in 2005, owner has added a wrap-around deck, hot tub, hard wood floors on main level, replaced kitchen appliances and faucets, replaced bathroom faucets, repainted, and added air conditioning. The 30 year roof was replaced 2 years ago. Furniture is included except artwork and one small table so you can move in and enjoy this carefree home.

Nestled on a private elevated lot backing to the National Park, this home has been beautifully furnished and well landscaped. Better than new! Outstanding condition and move in ready! Energy efficient SIPS construction for low energy bills and a comfortable quiet interior. Master suite on the main level, and another master upstairs with a spacious loft and additional guest room. Seasonal views from the deck to the Shamokin Gorge and mountains beyond. Trex style deck for easy maintenance. Plenty of parking space-home was thoughtfully placed with room for a garage to be added.

thepublishers I write this from Mommy’s new little toy. Tommy has taken both of the kids to tennis and the house is quiet and I am alone. I should drop a pin on the floor just to hear what that sounds like. The new little toy? It’s a cheap little black laptop that I gave myself during the holidays. It’s nothing fancy but I love it because it is mine. No one touches it. I’d rather get up out of bed to unlock the screen password myself rather than share the secret with a dear member of my family. So there it is. I don’t exactly share well with others. Strike that. I share much of my time with others – mainly my family – but when it comes to this one thing, I’m not giving it up. As an only child, I never had to share my stuff but as I got older, it made sense to if it meant having friends. So yes, I did loan out my skateboard to the new kid for about 20 seconds. If it had been 30, he would have messed it up. So my aversion to sharing is definitely a social deficit of mine. My kids, however, share more toys between each other than I ever would have imagined. To think Adam has actually given Peyton some of his

trains boggles my mind. That being said, there were big tears being shed at the top of the staircase the other day when Adam wouldn’t return a unicorn Peyton had allegedly given him. The crying, the screaming, the foot stomping. What I would have given then to toss a pin to the floor just to hear it drop. Instead, I told them they could trade in that unicorn for a new-to-them toy from a special box in the shed, the one with my old stuff. In goes unicorn, out comes Wow-Wow, my childhood white teddy bear that is no longer very white. I never thought I’d ever share WowWow. But when you’re a parent, you trade in your teddy for your children, and unicorns for a little black laptop. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com When Old Age is Better than Youth I can think of numerous reasons to appreciate age over youth: wisdom, a letting go of drama, the sense of grace that develops only with life experience, and if one’s lucky, a humor whose provenance is, perhaps paradoxically, accumulated sorrow. When it comes to wine, there may be yet another reason to opt for age. But first, let’s back up. I’ve listened to people complain of headaches when they drink wine, particularly migraines. I’ve been asked countless times the causes of headaches (apart from quantity imbibed): Is it the tannins in red wine? Higher acidity in white? It must be the sulfites, etc. But it wasn’t until a customer told me she sought out older vintages after reading a study in a medical journal about the advantages of aged wines in relation to headaches. We’ve both since tried to find the article, but to no avail. I can only guess that since the tannin in chocolate, tea and wine is frequently listed as a migraine trigger, that when the wine’s harsh tannic acid is mellowed with age, it also lessens its trigger factor. But don’t take our word for it — wine is as individual as each of

us. Do your own empirical study; the research should not prove unpleasant. Similarly many people explain that they can drink wine in Europe, headache-free, but not in the U.S. It must be the sulfites in American wine, they say. No. Sulfites occur in all wine—as a natural preservative found on grapes, and without which your wine would quickly become your salad vinaigrette. (If concerned, look for the words “No added sulfites.”) European wines have sulfites, so let’s look at a few other influences involved: you’re on holiday, and you’re relaxed and happy. Your meal is lasting about 20 times longer than it does at home, and you’re eating slower. Your portions are smaller, and there’s that obligatory bottle of Badoit or other sparkling water. And back to the first theory, perhaps the wines have a bit of age on them. In many cases, I prefer older wines, but for different reasons. While a wine will lose fruit when it ages, it also gains complexity. Tannins mellow while leaving in their once mouthpuckering place a sexier, softer, and smoother texture and taste. If tannins be the headache culprit, then here’s

our answer, but if not, nothing lost and everything gained in terms of nuance, umami and tertiary aromas like mushrooms or almonds. Because any wine a wine shop has aged will cost more, buy wines capable of aging and cellar yourself. If that proves taxing, we offer a range of what are called library bottles (older vintages) from ’89 Bordeaux and ’03 Montepuliciano, to ’06 Burgundies and ’07 Rhones. Make an appointment, or just stop in and browse. A few favorites ready to drink now: Odoardi, Vigna Garrone, 2004 – I love the funky, barnyard notes that often develop when a wine is cellared, and the Vigna Garrone has them in spades. Its home is Calabria, Italy’s toe, and the predominant varietal is Galioppo, a grape high in tannins, thus a good candidate for cellaring. The 2004 shows smoky, earthy and foresty notes with hints of tobacco, miso and coffee bean. $24.99 Calabretta, Nerello Mascalese, 2006 – The Nerello is highly concentrated, showing still a lot of cassis fruit, with plummy, raisiny, chocolatey, sherry-like taste. Perfect with Stilton cheese. $29.99

STORY by YVETTE STAFFORD PHOTOGRAPHY by SUSAN B. VIEMEISTER

STONE IS FOREVER Robert Ballard was tasked to build a wall that would honor the souls and honor the views.

FEBRUARY 2017

Blue Ridge LIFE

A place to scatter ashes. That’s what Dee Dee Sherman wanted on the hillside of her family’s farm, a place where apple trees bloom in the spring, and cows slowly graze the fields. The spot is a well-kept secret – and we’ll keep it that way – because well, the views. “Oh good heavens,” Dee Dee explains. “It’s my everyday blessing basically, to enjoy the beauty that God surrounds me at every turn. “Exposed paradise,” is how Robert Ballard describes it. He’s the stone mason Dee Dee hired to build a wall that will stand the test of time, that will memorialize the souls who over five generations have worked and loved the land. “It’s on a hillside and it does get sun starting at 10 o’clock and for

12

the rest of the day. But the wind can be fierce.” Robert wouldn’t have signed up for the job if he didn’t like what he did. And it helps to be married to a landscape designer who can deadpan the obvious. “Stone is forever.” Dee Dee had approached Susan for help in the designing the structure. The first few versions – ones with strong angles, a horseshoe shape, and even a patio element – those didn’t stick. “We went back to the site and stood there, she and I, and we talked about it and it was not really there for her yet,” Susan said. Little did they know they had been staring at the design all of this time.

“Somehow I hit upon the idea of a serpentine wall to create that curve and return back to the mountain ... Once you start to see this laid out, you start to see that shape in the mountains, you see it in the roadsides, you see it in a cow path. To me, that’s when art happens.” So she started tracing out the lines with stakes and strings so that Dee Dee could visualize the design. “If you stand at that site and look out off to the left, there’s a gravel road that’s exactly that serpentine. That puts the hair up on the back of my head.” But the wall couldn’t really begin to take shape until Robert had rocks to work with. He could have just phoned in some pallets of flat sandstone from West Virginia but as blessed as this hillside is with the views, it is with stones. “We found out from a fellow working on the property that there were some stacks of stones in the mountain close by that he found while rabbit hunting.” Thank goodness for rabbits and the men who hunt them. Not every stone they hauled up from that spot worked but that’s the part of the job. “It’s a very physical thing and that’s one of the things I love about it,” Robert tells me from his kitchen table, enjoying a well deserved wine. “The physicality, being outdoors in a beautiful place, working hard.” Stone masonry is a craft that precedes Robert’s existence. “I drove from Lovingston over through Shipman and Findlay Mountain Road today and I saw two or three old ruins of stone buildings. The roof’s gone. All the wood’s gone. The people are gone but here’s a structure still standing with trees growing up in the middle of it.” Stone is indeed forever.

There were nights Robert and his crew had to tuck the stones under an insulated blanket at night hoping the heat harnessed during the day wouldn’t escape and freeze the structure. That, in addition to a streak of “warmish days,” helped things along. Slowly but surely, the serpentine wall took shape, slithering across the hillside above the dormant apple trees. This mountain snake slithers to a stop beside a boulder the mountain had released during Hurricane Camille. Repositioned to its new resting place, it will eventually form the base for a garden sculpture. But

14

Blue Ridge LIFE

Dee Dee also sees it for its functional potential. “I jokingly have been telling Robert that he needs to work in a wine cooler, a solar powered wine refrigerator, into the end of his design on the wall and Susan and I have been talking about using that boulder as a wine table.” After all, we are in the land of Jefferson. “That’s what brings to mind, gracious sakes, a glass of wine and a pretty clear day, and the quiet. The quiet that is back there is just lovely.” A place to scatter ashes and to spill some wine. BRL

“I have spots on my left index finger where I don’t have feeling anymore because I was working so hard into a piece of metal and the graver jabbed me. The joke in the engraving class was, ‘Whose blood is that on the floor?’” There’s no blood on the floor of Katie Campbell Spurlock’s workspace in the loft of H.L. Lang’s Jewelers. Almost two decades of experience are paying off. In fact the Staunton shop belies any such perils. It is brightly lit. Crystal chandeliers hang in the storefront windows and over the illuminated antique oak display cases. Diamonds and colorful gemstones glitter in dazzling response. The carats are countless. It’s only a matter of time before Audrey Hepburn is going to pause to peer in from Beverley Street, placidly nibbling a pastry. Katie is soft-spoken as if all of this twinkling is the starlight of a serene night sky we’re strolling in awe under. It is also the hush of loving reverence of an enterprise with a long entwined history, of which she describes herself the present steward. Henry L. Lang opened his business in 1885. He was an engraver and one of the first optometrists in Virginia. Lang sold the store and it passed through three related owners, the most recent being Thomas King who sold H.L. Lang and Co. to Katie in 2015. “Tom [King] was a family friend. My first memory of him was at an event at the Boy Scout Camp in Swoope. I was dying to go out on the canoe and nobody would go . . . it was a big social thing going on out there but Tom King took me out on the canoe. He took me over to the cattails. That’s my first memory of him, I was 4-years-old. Tom had three sons. If Daddy couldn’t have walked me down the aisle Tom knew he was going to be doing it.” While in college Katie tried some art classes, “I took a sculpture class. You had to make something bigger than yourself. I failed that. I realized I do things really small. That’s my boundary.” Inspiration struck when Katie’s father gave her a hand-engraved ring. King had engraving done by Mr. Howard Wimer in Roanoke. Enthused by this art form and encouraged by King, Katie studied under Wimer, took classes, and practiced at home. The standard of success was when she took over engraving for Lang’s. The Wimer family made certain Katie inherited his bench tools which she uses daily. 18

SUBMITTED

Katie Campbell Spurlock with Howard Wimer in 2000. Spurlock studied under him, and his family made sure she inherited his bench tools upon his passing.

“Hand engraving is a classy way of being artistic. It’s what feeds me, creating wearable art.” “There aren’t many hand-engravers so I wasn’t that competitive.” You don’t have to be, especially when you are extremely good at it. Technology has slipped into the craftsman’s chair. Pneumatic computer-operated engraving machines have made the artist’s eye even scarcer. Katie shows me a sterling silver cup, “It’s from a client in Lexington. The first initials and date are from 1872.” Katie secures the cup in the vise block which acts as jaws to grip the item and allow a range of motion. Katie explains that now her skill is called “hand pushing” as the movement of her left hand manipulates the cup; her right hand etches the design with a graver following her hand-sketched pattern. “These initials and date reflect the fifth generation owner of this cup.” “No pressure there,” quips Kate Simon as she snaps pictures. There seems to be no pressure on the shoulders of the fifth owner of Lang’s as she scribes the sterling legacy. She’s clearly in her element. “My favorite thing is to engrave somebody’s handwriting.” The Saturday before Mother’s Day a 12-year-old boy walked into the shop, by himself, clutching $14.00 He explained to a clerk he wanted he wanted to get his mom something. The clerk began showing him fashion jewelry trying to work within his budget constraints. Katie looked down from her bench in the loft and “realized this fellow was on a mission. Tomorrow is Mother’s Day, how can I make this bigger? So I suggested a sterling silver bracelet.” The clerk said, “He only has $14.00?” Katie said, “It doesn’t matter.” Then recognizing the young customer Katie took it a step further. She had him create and write the inscription she would engrave in his childlike hand inside the bracelet, “I love you mom, Ben”. I bet I know where Ben will go years from now for an engagement ring, the venerable, sparkling H. L. Lang and Company. BRL

Market Stabilization 2016 Year end residential real estate summary for Nelson County

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

While we remain in a buyers market, sellers may have a few reasons to feel a bit more encouraged. Here is a market summary for Nelson County. *Sales figures were pulled from the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors (CAAR) Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Countywide Overview; 241 residential properties sold in 2016 which represents a 3% decrease from 2015 when 248 properties sold. Statistical Comparisons; Q1Q4 2015 recap: 248 sales, median $199,900, average price $240,746, average price per sq ft $130.66, days on market (DOM) 203, median DOM of 119. Q1-Q4 2016: 241 sales, median $200,000, average price $233,103, average price per sq ft $126.56, DOM 185, median DOM of 115. There were several positives achieved in 2016, the median held steady with a marginal increase of .05%, and the time it took to sell a house was reduced by

8.9%. The number of sales decreased slightly by 2.8%, but that figure is still higher than any other year in the past decade, thus more buyers are beginning to enter the marketplace. “More” is relative, as in the height of our market in 2005 there were 404 sales. Price per sq ft decreased by 3.1% and remains the greatest point of consideration for any seller; if you want to sell, the property must be priced appropriately. On another positive note, inventory is diminishing. Countywide, there are currently 265 active residential properties for sale compared to 280 at this time last year. Sales Summary by Locality; Nelson County sales encompass 3 main markets, Wintergreen (mountain) with 120 sales at an average price per sq ft of $136.96, Stoney Creek (valley) with 24 sales at an average price per sq ft of $124.40, and all other non-resort or county properties with 97 sales and an average price per sq

ft of $114.24. When comparing 2016 sales with 2015 sales, all 3 markets were relatively stable. The county saw no change in sales, while Stoney Creek increased by 4% (equivalent of 1 sale) and Wintergreen decreased by 6%. The county was the only market to increase in price by 2%. Price did not fluctuate greatly in the other 2 markets, but both did decline, 5% in Wintergreen and 7% in Stoney Creek. Another notable statistic is within Wintergreen (mountain) and the distribution of sales; 120 properties sold representing 39 detached homes and 81 attached/condos. Hence, 68% of all mountain sales have been condos. Besides Wintergreen and Stoney Creek, the nonresort county locality with the most sales was Afton with 26, representing 27% of that market. Monthly/Quarterly Sales Breakdown; 2016 Monthly Sales: January-18, February-14, March-16, April-16, May-21, June-21, July-18,

434-996-3525

August-20, September-24, October-28, November-17, December-28. The strongest months were October and December and the slowest month was February. 2016 Quarterly Summary: Q1-48, Q2-58, Q3-62, Q4-73. Q4 recognized the highest number of sales while Q1 achieved the fewest. Historically the second half of the year consistently outperforms the first half. Percentage increase in sales when comparing the second half of the year with the first half: 2014 - 26%, 2015 - 28%, 2016 – 27%. Variables such as location, views, acreage, condition and features can affect values. Dressed in layers for the nutty Virginia winter weather, Ian Thomas knows all about climate fluctuations. There’s a stubborn layer of snow outside the model warehouse at the Virginia Distillery Company, but local weather guessers are predicting a heat wave by the end of the week. It’s a reminder that the Virginia Distillery Company sits in Virginia, not Scotland. “In the highlands of Scotland, you get this kind of steady climate. What we’re trying to do in the warehouses we’re building now is achieve a much more variable climate, less insulated ... more towards allowing the climate to actually affect the barrels whereas in here, it is a bit more stable. What you see in here might take a bit longer to mature.” Greeting you as you step inside the warehouse are stacks of barrels – there’s no wonder the distillery is having to add more storage space – and that unmistakable smell, part grandpa’s trusty tweed jacket, part muddy dog paws.

“It’s the angel’s share,” Ian explains. “In Virginia with this extreme climate change, we get quite bit more of the angel’s share as you would in Scotland.” The angel’s share – as the words suggest – is the portion of the casked alcohol that evaporates into the heavens, and can only be smelled, not tasted. In the Scottish highlands, Ian says the angel’s share runs around 2 to 3 percent, perhaps 4. “Whereas here in Virginia, we can see anywhere from 8 to 12 percent losses.” But what Virginia taketh, it also giveth. As the state experiences a boozy renaissance, the Distillery recently hit a major milestone, filling its 1000th cask. And as production ramps up, Ian is predicting cask number 2000 will be filled next year. Closing the doors to the warehouse, tucking the barrels in for a long winter’s nap, we jab our chilly hands in our pockets and walk back up to the main building where a cozy soapstone bar beside a roaring fire awaits us. The perfect place to cup your hands around a White Winter.

Ian Thomas, Distillery Director at Virginia Distillery Company, pops open a cask for a sample. The Distillery recently filled its 1000th barrel and is currently expanding its storage space to meet demand. Although the musty smell of the warehouse is sure to excite any whisky lover, the odor is the result of the “angel’s share,” the alcohol that evaporates when poured into porous oak barrels.

“So, this is a white chocolate hot chocolate, topped with vanilla bean whipped cream that we make in-house. And some pretty red sprinkles.” It’s all about the pretty red sprinkles. Will Reed is the Whisky Experience Ambassador and he’s behind the bar, doing all the fancy cocktail stuff. “I drop the experience on everyone. It’s a tough job.” So tough. Seriously, if you’re suffering from the winter blues, Will is your doctor. “I try to take an inspiration from the season or the holiday that’s coming up ... There’s a lot you can do from cold to hot to neat.” So if frozen pipes and lack of sunshine have you down, Will can fix that for you. “You definitely need to start out with a whisky neat. And I actually like to sit down and play it with the water.”

30

Blue Ridge LIFE

FEBRUARY 2017

What? “You can actually sit down with a whisky neat, add a drop, and see how that opens it up, ‘releasing the serpent’ as they call it. And then just straight up, which is always my favorite.” And watch your winter blues melt away. “Exactly! All your winter blues go away, especially if you finish it with the White Winter.” But what if you’re mood is okay but your throat isn’t? “Toddy! Absolutely ... Throw a little honey in there, soothe the throat.” And for that hot swipe-right Valentine’s date you’re not sure about? “Straight up,” Will advises. “Straight up. Just take it right to the face.” Just what the doctor ordered. BRL

HOMECOMING Fans plan gathering to honor legacy of late Earl Hamner

When 10-year-old Mary Beth McDonough was cast as young Erin Walton in the 1971 TV movie The Homecoming: A Christmas Story, she didn’t even dream of being part of the national treasure that became CBS’ The Waltons. The TV show, which aired from 1971 to 1981 took Mary Beth out of her “valley girl” California live and dropped her straight in the middle of the Great Depression, right here in Schuyler. Now, 45 years later, Mary Beth and her cast mates are gathering at Schuyler’s Walton Mountain Museum to celebrate their fans and remember the man who made the Waltons community a possibility, the show’s writer and creator, Earl Hamner, Jr., who died of cancer on March 24, 2016 at the age of 92. “I love Schuyler and I love Virginia and I can’t wait to see everybody,” said Mary Beth, who quickly added that Earl’s presence will be sorely missed. “Uncle Earl is what

he called himself to us. He really molded my life and who I am, as did the show.” Michael Learned, who played Olivia Walton, mother to the Walton clan, agreed with Mary Beth. She said that she’s very much looking forward to seeing her on-screen family and meeting with the fans, but that Earl will be missed and remembered throughout the weekend. “I’ll say the usual thing about Earl, which is absolutely the truth: he was a really nice, kind, gentle man with a wicked sense of humor, which made him bearable,” said Michael. “Because without [that sense of humor], he would have been too good to be true.” Michael’s one-woman show at the Jefferson in Charlottesville is, unlike the majority of the other events for the reunion weekend, not yet sold out. A full schedule of events can be found at www.EarlHamnerStoryteller.com. BRL

Time to get crankin’ With New Years’ Resolutions in place, it’s time to get crankin’. After a crazy 2016 with tons of races, rides and trail runs done, we were fortunate to be able to kick off 2017 with some great running on snow covered trails. The temps were literally zero and the snow had dumped and continued to dump as we did our annual snow photo shoot trail run with Jesse Peters, an Xterra photographer. The usual night-before invite was sent out as the snow began to fall and forecasts of 1 to 3 inches turned to 4 to 6 inches. That morning, I was the first to arrive by truck as trusty old Big Blue (my Durango) was the only one able to navigate the roads to the trail head. The gang assembled and the obligatory group photo on the untouched snow covered bridge was taken and I was ready to get moving. I showed up in shorts on a snowy 20°F day. These trail run/photo shoot adven-

tures have a tempo set by the photograph, which can make for a long day based on the camera’s eye. Last year, I way overdressed in what took 4 hours to cover 7.5 miles in foot deep snow. So this year, I decided to go light on the clothing and it ended up being the right choice. After the unbelievable bridge crossing, we hit the trails. Immediately the snow was well over ankle deep and not a soul had been out before us. You know what that means: post holing. It’s the best way to warm up and burn calories and the colder the better. Now I’m like ‘Game on!’ The shorts were the best call as everyone else was looking to shed layers. Then as our photog was carrying all his gear – two cameras with large lenses and a couple of smaller ones – he decided to take on a higher quality/ fewer takes session, which again worked great for me as I needed to keep the heat. In the trails, the snow was fresh

and a perfect depth to cover the rocks and roots on our singletrack adventures. When my turn came to run up front and break trail, watching the snow flying off the front of my shoes was like watching a locomotive plowing through fresh snow. It was awesome! Jesse, gave us stopping points for us to wait or run together or jump streams along the way. Last year, I had one photo that had everyone asking, “Did he make it?” The photo was of me jumping a creek with the camera looking up from the creek. How did I top that? I wiped out in perfect Bumble fashion. I hit ice or something and immediately found myself bouncing off the ground and back on my feet in seconds. We finished up soon after in under 2 hours and 7.5 miles later. This really set my brain in motion on some thoughts for 2017. On the trail running side of things on the local front, I’m eyeing the BelMonte over in the Sherando area

in March. Then there’s the UROC coming to Skylark up on the Blue Ridge Parkway in May. From there, the list gets a little crazy and I’m playing that a little closer to the chest. For the Virginia Off Road Series, we’ll have another incredible calendar coming together to kick off on March 25 at Pocahontas State Park near Richmond. Out at James River State Park, we have our Adventure Triathlon slated for April 25. We are over half full already as of this writing in mid-January! March 25, 2017 - Virginia Off Road Series launch Pocahontas State Park with the Tour de Pocahontas (VirginiaOffRoadSeries.com) April 22, 2017 – James River State Park’s Adventure Triathlon Kayak 7 mile downstream Mountain Bike 8 mile Trail Run 5k (AdventuresOnTheJames.com)

FEBRUARY 2017

Late Winter’s Maintenance List The daylight hours are increasing every day now and before you know it, early spring bulbs and perennials will begin to show their cheerful faces denoting the beginning of the end for Old Man Winter’s annual wrath. While the grass is still very dormant and the bulk of landscape chores are still months away, there are a handful of things that should be addressed right now – in particular since these tasks are generally the ones that get overlooked. From late winter pruning to stone walk treads to birdhouse maintenance, get on top of these projects on the next bump in the mercury. Unlike most businesses and the bulk of residential landscapes, you resisted the temptation to prune your landscape in the fall. For more than three months now you have been enjoying the remnants of your fall landscape, sometimes lightly snow covered, while keeping winter damage to a minimum since you did not prune. Now however, the parties and holidays are over and the spring flush is right around the corner – let’s prune! Shape up your boxwoods; cut back those panicle hydrangeas. Trees, ornamental grasses, hellebore (Lenten rose), laurels, etc. ... Prune ‘em all. Want to do some major rejuvenation cuts? There’s no better time. The only plants that you will stay away from are the ones that will bloom before May 1. This group will be pruned after it blooms. Our feathered friends require a little yearly maintenance of their abodes during this time of the year. Clean out all birdhouses and, if your skill-set allows, repair houses that need a little extra TLC. With bare minimal tools, one can fix rotten boards/leaking roofs and reinstall these houses to allow for another clutch of eggs during the late spring and early summer. Remember, birds are not in search of the Trump Tower – just a dry nesting site that is

off the ground to minimize predator encounters. Dry set stone paths are neat. These meandering paths can take you to any number of areas within the bounds of your imagination - from hidden gardens to simply crossing a landscape bed. Over time, soil and grass tend to swallow the edges of these stones and reduces the footprint of the stone. Use a spade to remove soil/grass that has accumulated above the edges. Voles and other tunneling varmints dig under these stones and make them unsteady. Remove rocking stones and prepare a new bed of stone dust beneath them and reset. Stone dust will minimize any tunneling since it has sharp particles that make digging less than desirable. Large perennials that dazzle can be divided now if you like. Take a sharp spade (emphasis on sharp) and either dig the hole plant up and use the spade to cut the plant in half or of desired size or just shove the spade into the middle of the “crown” or top of the plant and remove this piece and transplant to a new location. Remember to plant your perennial at ground level and prep the soil around it to ensure that it will thrive once spring soil temperatures rise. Annual weeds that have begun to show their ugly faces around the landscape need to be addressed sooner than later. Remove these weeds before your perennial and shrub growth begins. Add mulch or composted leaves where these weeds have been removed. Mulch in general should be evaluated and applied to any areas where soil has begun to bleed through the old mulch. Two to three inches of composted hardwood mulch or shredded leaf litter should be applied to the entire landscape. Avoid over mulching trees with the dreaded blister or mound of mulch which drives root growth upwards and can cause trees to suffer, or even die.

is most likely a virus. Sick all over? Meaning you have body aches, sore throat, fever, cough, upset stomach all at once? Most likely a virus. Our bodies know how to fight these things, and if left alone, most of the time will do a very good job. So, how do we know when we need an antibiotic? When is an infection bacterial? Generally speaking, if an infection has gone on for more than 10 days and is worsening, it is a good idea to see your doctor to see if there is now a bacterial infection that needs treated. Often bacterial infections are just in one place (like an ear, lung, bladder, or throat) and not in many places (see above “sick all over). Certainly if a person is very sick, it is worth seeing the doctor no matter how long it has been going on. So, the next time you get a cold, try good old fluids, rest, and time before thinking about antibiotics. The old ways often work best!

TuckahoeAntiques.com

Dear Dr. Steve, I am sick. Do I need an antibiotic? This is a question that all doctors wrestle with every day. There is a feeling in the public that to get better from many illnesses one must take an antibiotic. However, this is not always true. Most of the many sicknesses we all get every year will get better on their own, left alone, with no help from a doctor or medicine. In fact, taking an antibiotic sometimes can make things worse (cause side effects or serious infections caused by killing good bacteria along with the bad). Antibiotics are amazing and wonderful medicines that can kill bacteria. In doing so, they can stop some very serious infections, even to the point of saving lives. But, not all infections are caused by bacteria. If an illness is caused by a virus, an antibiotic will not kill it or help the person taking it get any better any faster than if he or she did not take it. Viruses are extremely common. Every parent expects them when their kids go back to school or daycare. When your coworker is coughing all over you and you then get sick—that
