Artist Corner.... Large Vase on the cover: Robin Mangum - Since 1975 Robin and Bet Mangum created a national following producing pottery and ceramic art in a wide variety of function and form. In early 2009 Bet passed away. Robin is continuing their life's work with his 2 assistants. The studio is a popular destination for avid collectors wanting to visit a working studio in the beautiful North Carolina mountains. It is open for visitors year round. Hours vary, so please call: (336) 372-5291. www.MangumPottery.com Pottery on the cover and article on page 20. Cups on the cover: Robin and Daniel Cater began working in clay in the mid '90's. By 2000, they became full time potters selling their work mainly at art shows throughout the Southeast. Late 2002, they relocated from the south end of Alleghany County to just north of Sparta where they have established their home and pottery studio. From the start, Robin and Bet Mangum have been incredibly influential to the Caters, providing encouragement, integrity, and most of all, friendship. Daniel handbuilds while Robin mostly wheelthrows. Together they create a body of work that ranges from functional pottery to unique, organic sculptural artworks. Pottery on pages 4, 5, 39. Phyllis Haile, one of the 5 founding members of Little River Gallery of Sparta, focuses primarily on pottery and oil painting. She has a B.S. in Commerical Art and has studied oil portraiture and interior design. In 2003, Phyllis was awarded a study grant from the Regional Artist Project of Northwest North Carolina and in 2007 won first place at the Blue Ridge Art and Photography Show in Dobson, NC. Phyllis’ work can be seen at the Little River Gallery of Sparta, located at 33A North Main St. Pottery on pages 9 & 27. Sara Harper and Tina Duffey, co-owners of the Pottery Place in Sparta, are cousins and have been playing in clay for longer than they care to characterize with a number. Both ladies moved back to Alleghany County in the 2000's and, even though both maintained a garage studio, both held a common goal of opening an art gallery. Pottery Place became a reality in the spring of 2009. Sara is the dedicated potter and Tina dabbles with fabric, clay, glass...she has not decided what she wants to be when she grows up. Tina was awarded a grant from the Regional Artist Project of Northwest North Carolina and used this to study the process of combining pottery with fused/slumped glass. Pottery on pages 15 & 24.

Welcome To Sparta...
This issue of the SPARTA Magazine celebrates the art of pottery. Pottery is an example of how art is coming into its own in our community. Weaving, quilting, painting, photography, woodcraft, and a revival of traditional music are just some of the other art forms that are on the rise. While not equal to the agricultural and manufacturing economy, individual studios, galleries and artist cooperatives are taking their place in the small business economy and keep alive a tradition of hand craftsmanship. It is a complement to the natural splendor of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the meandering waters of the New River and the pastoral beauty of grazing cattle and Christmas tree fields. In addition to the visual arts, the area is also home to many musicians that keep traditional mountain music alive. Alleghany County is proud that Sparta Elementary School was the home of the first JAM (Junior Appalachian Musician) program that teaches youngsters traditional music and dance. Maybe we will figure a way to show off that music in a future SPARTA Magazine. You can enjoy the beauty and handicrafts of Sparta and Alleghany County anytime, but if you plan a visit, check our festivals and events that permit you to get an extra measure of enjoyment. When you are in town, please stop by the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. We're on Main Street in the rock building with the green awning across from the Farmers' Hardware parking lot and you are always welcome. Hopefully we can answer your questions and help assure your visit is enjoyable. The New River forms the western and northern border of Alleghany County and is popular for canoeing, kayaking and tubing. Anglers are challenged by its fish and those in the many mountain creeks and streams. New River State Park and local outfitters are available to assist your river adventure. Several mountain links are available to challenge golfers. And any day is a good time to sample the fruit of the vine at a local winery. And while you ride, you can enjoy the many barn quilts squares that adorn so many buildings thanks to the Alleghany Quilters Guild. Donny McCall owns a construction business in Sparta. As the business owner, he did not need a rack on his truck all of the time. Since his professional truck was also his family vehicle, he didn't want to make it look like a work truck all the time. The idea came to him of a ladder rack that would fold down onto the bedrails, thus the Invis-A-Rack was born. Experience with the first prototype indicated the Invis-A-Rack may have a more commercial potential. As a work product, Invis-ARack can be used to carry all types of construction materials, leaving the bed open for tools. As a recreational product, it allows pickup owners to carry items like canoes and kayaks overhead, and fill the bed up with an ATV and camping equipment. Not content to just put a new product on the market, McCall is determined to manufacture as much of his product as possible in his hometown. With the production of the first 300 units, McCall attended the November 2010 Specialty Equipment Marketing Association show in Las Vegas for aftermarket products for cars and trucks and walked away with three awards: a Popular Mechanics Editor's Choice Award, a 2010 SEMA Global Media Award for Best New Product, and the Light Truck Accessory Alliance (LTAA) Award for Best New Product over $500. For a community that has lost several manufacturers in the last decade, entrepreneurs like McCall offer the hope of new jobs. A man of deep faith, McCall believes the Invis-A-Rack is a gift he has been given for the benefit of this community.

Mangum Pottery... If the potter's art had a beginning in Alleghany County, it was in the back porch studio of a couple of disillusioned educators. Rob and Bet Mangum came to Alleghany County in 1973 to teach at a private school. Before the year was out, they knew their hearts were leading them elsewhere. Bet set up a workshop on their back porch and began working in clay. Both are accomplished musicians and Rob studied making traditional musical instruments. In time Bet convinced him to join her in the potter's trade. Their first sale was at Alleghany County's 1976 Bicentennial celebration. "We sold $100 in pottery and we came home high as a kite," Rob remembers. More shows followed and before long, they were earning a living from their art. In 1982, they built a studio in the Turkey Knob community - one of the area's first passively heated buildings. Of their two sons, Rob Jr. and Frank, Rob Jr. would eventually establish a studio in Weaverville, NC. The Mangums shared their skill by offering workshops and became a catalyst for many artists in the area. Rob Jr. once counted 80 potters in the region who had studied under the Mangums or had taken one of their workshops. Always stretching the boundaries of clay and glazes, they are known for their unique evolving style. The summer of 2008, Bet was diagnosed with cancer. Up until her passing she lived her life as always with passion and purpose making pottery and music. Rob continues to work and train new potters in their studio, but credits Bet with their success. "She was a natural teacher. During the lean years, she persevered." He recently took on a new intern and has confidence she will become successful. "She's going to be a potter. She'll have a business in Alleghany County."
