These Hands Every time you consider buying something that was made by the hands of these artists, you are helping them in supporting their home communities. These hands are not in some overseas factory. They are not in some obscure island in the middle of the ocean. They are not a tag on a mass produced item. These hands give money to their local grocer. They buy locally grown food and vegetables. They give their hardearned money to the independent shops in their town. They buy lunch at a diner. They support their mom and pop hardware store. Being the creative group they are, they buy nuts, bolts, screws and tools from their local stores. Some even grow their own food, and a few can spin their own wool. These hands love to work. They learned how to work from their grandmothers and mothers. They honor the traditions that were set forth by their families and friends. They love the land, and they support conservation. They are metalsmiths; they are organic food producers; they are soap makers; they are jewelers; they are crafters; they are fabric artists; they are collectors; they are teachers; they are sculptures; they work in hot glass; they are photographers; they are artists; they are gemologists. The hands of these women can use a torch, manipulate metal, measure ingredients, weave thread, use needles to create clothing, spin a pot, capture a photo and add color to a plain canvas. Always First Janus is the god of the doorway, and there is nothing closer to a doorway into a new year than the month of January. Both hot and cold depending upon where in the world you are, January is a month of extremes. January rings in the new year, and it is the Thank You month. In some cultures, it is still the Christmas.

Second Place She may be second, but that doesn’t make her second best by any means. In fact, she is charming and makes a wonderful first impression. The month of February is the shortest on the Julian and Gregorian calendar, and it is home to the strange phenomenon of Leap Year when it has 29 days instead of the normal 28 days. We use February to catchÂup with the seasonal year. February is derived from the Latin term that means purification. While some flowers are blooming in the north, it is the middle of summer in other parts of the world.
The Signs: Aquarius and Pisces: The waterbearer and the twin fish.
The Flower: It is the lovely Iris that graces the table of the child of February. It goes with the traditional color of purple being associated with those born under the second month. The Iris expresses peace of mind, friendship, faith, hope and wisdom. Creating from yarn is one of the most pleasurable stress reducer in my life. While working at a very stressful job I would take my yarn and needles and work on my project of the moment during lunch and the stress of the morning would slip away.

She Was Born in March
In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb There are 31 days to enjoy the traits of March. March is home to St. Patrick’s day and oh, the Ides of March. It is a rough and tumble month as winter loses its grip on the Northern Hemisphere and spring snatches the month away on the March Equinox. This month is ruled by Mars, the god of war, and it is the first month of the Roman calendar. Mars was the guardian of agriculture and father to those famous twins: Romulus and Remus. We see seasons changing, crops being readied, flowers starting to fight their way to the surface under ice and the season of change starting.
The Signs: Pisces and Aries: Twin fish and the Ram
The Flower: As the tiny plants start to unfurl under the ice and snow, bulb flowers are starting to shove their way upward. The beautiful and intricate daffodil is the flower of the March babies. In some climates, they are the first flowers that give us the first sign of spring.

I drew a heart shaped form on a piece of copper sheet, cut it, etched it, oxidized it and made tiny holes at the top and bottom. I then drew and cut another heart/shield like shape from brass sheet. This second layer was hammered all around for a rustic look.
