It’s with great pleasure to introduce our 4th Annual Plates & Totems Exhibit curated by Tony Natsoulas. This is one of the community’s most attended exhibit (and my personal favorite.) Over 125 artists are participating this year with plates and totems that tell stories for everyone. In addition to this exciting exhibit, Debra Oliva showcases her ceramic work in the WestPark Gallery in her exhibit titled White Noise. You may recall that Debra was the 1st Place recipient to the CeramaCom competition from 2012. Her use of the medium is exceptionally precise with delightful detailed carvings. Of course, the gallery wouldn’t be complete without our youth participation. The Eli & Edythe Broad Gallery hosts our children’s work from the “create a plate” free workshop. Children have been sponsored to participate and to take their work home after the exhibit. We hope you’ll consider sponsoring a child or two at $25 for their one-of-a-kind work!
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for some of our year end events that include Brazilian Guitarist Stephen Holland on November 22, the annual holiday craft sale November 11-12, and of course children’s workshops and camps for the holiday season. As always, we have a wonderful gift shop with original hand-made works from our Blue Line Artists for that special person in your life. CURATOR’S CORNER Plates and Totems show started four years ago when Roseville Arts! asked me to curate a ceramic show. Being a ceramic artist myself, I knew that sculptures are more difficult to sell than 2D art. So I thought of how I could encourage artists to use a format that would be more conducive to having in homes. Why not have artists make something that is a traditional object that hangs on the wall right along with the paintings and drawings they have already. Where were people likely to put large scale pieces? Outside and that is where the totems were brought in. I am so proud of how this show has developed, we will have more than 25 totems and more than 80 plates from artists from all over the area..

ARTIST PROFILE RAY GONZALES Q&A Who is your favorite artist and why? Vincent Van Gogh.
His paintings were rich, textured, full of color and movement.
How did you get your start?
Drawing on my mom’s wall when I was about 4. I always knew I’d be an Artist. Sorry mom.
What is a hidden talent of yours? I have 2. Calming
fussy babies & juggling apples in the produce section of the market- but not both at the same time.
What are you most proud of? My beautiful wife Colleen,
my 3 sons-Raymond III, Gabe and Jordan + granddaughters Autumn and Elana.
What has been your biggest challenge as an artist?
Time. There never seems to be enough of it. What do you see happening in the next 5 years?
Spending more time making Art. Experimenting with new clays, glazes and kilns. Exhibiting more.

RULES FOR PAINTING I enjoy reading what other artists have to say about painting since I always strive to learn more about the craft, as well as furthering my own growth in self-expression. All artists have their convictions about what should be done…in order to make a painting; what many contemporary painters concur and their work shows it, is that there are no rules in painting. Some of the so-called “rules” that I have come across seem unreasonable e.g.: don’t use white because it dulls the intensity of the hue or, never use the paintbrush to mix paint. I don’t pay much attention to dogmatic rules but rather, it is observations that point out aspects of the process of painting what most intrigue me. A straightforward statement, like “painting is about putting the right colors next to each other”, seems obvious and simple enough - until you try to apply it… finding that right color; because the color you mix on the palette is going to look different when it is on the painting. So the execution of that principle can lead to a convoluted system of studies and methods to find the ‘right color’ or - you can just take a stab at it.
An artist once stated that her job is to “eliminate clichés”. I pondered this idea and it applies to so many phases of creating a painting. Her incentive to avoid her clichés and myself avoiding mine as well, are going to come from our different viewpoints. I want each of my paintings to keep me interested as I work on them, but I find that my resolutions to problems remain unchanged; while knowing that there are a variety of approaches to my solutions. Finding her Idea insightful will help me incorporate these undiscovered solutions and, in doing so, will keep my fascination with the work.
the painting – look at it a long time. As I paint, all of the art / painting theory goes off into the corner of my mind, because what is happening before me guides my next action and not the rules. So taking time to see where I have gone is important – so as to find out where I am; in standing back, I can see all of my self-imposed rules and all of those that I have broken…all in search of the final expression. -Jacinto Rivera Artist

CREATIVE CARDS & HANDMADE PAPER Everyone loves receiving something handmade during the holidays, so join us for this fun two-day workshop where you’ll create your own festive cards and gift tags to give away using recyclable materials! On the first day, you’ll learn pulp and paper basics at the Utility Exploration Center, then cap things at Blue Line Arts getting into the holiday spirit while decorating your cards! We aim to hold a range of opportunities, including drawing, painting, clay, and textile workshops just for kids. As you can imagine, we go through a large amount of supplies every month, so we could use your help in replenishing them. Any donations you have would be greatly appreciated.
