During production, all of us enjoyed referring to this as our ‘spring’ issue because it was a reminder that better times lay ahead. A foot of snow on the ground? Sub zero temperatures? Not a problem; we had a warm and fuzzy magazine to put together. Thankfully so much can be done electronically that being house-bound made not a whit of difference. For days we hunted and gathered behind the comfort of our desks – and watched – as the articles grew fat – just like the rest of us…. Wake up! Time to crawl out of our caves and shake off the dust! For starters get over to the Indiana Design Center and acquaint yourselves with some of the best showrooms in the Mid-West. The vendors are friendly and in some cases famous. Walter Knabe, who painted “Hero and Leander” on our front cover, is an internationally recognized artist whose studio is on the second floor of the IDC. And Barry Lantz has to be one of the nicest people you could talk to. His decorating advice is straight-forward and easy to digest. You’ll read about them and many others in “Upscale Shopping at the IDC.” Mayor Brainard takes us on a fascinating tour of the planned development between Carmel City Center and downtown in our feature “The Midtown Project.” His ideas and energy have propelled our city well beyond its original landscape with more yet to come.

carmel’s growth over the last ten years has been truly impressive. new residents and visitors take our bustling city in stride, but for those who return to visit friends and family, the landscape seems to have magically transformed. as Mayor brainard reveals in the following interview, his plans for the future continue to evolve. the man behind the vision still sees great possibilities for this once sleepy burb north of indy. When did you first envision the redevelopment of Old Town Carmel into the Arts & Design District, followed by the creation of City Center? Was Midtown always a part of your master plan? city center planning and development actually occurred before we formalized our ideas for the arts & Design District. in 1995, when i was walking door-to-door during my first campaign,

residents kept asking for a downtown, someplace they could go with family, friends and colleagues to gather, dine out and be entertained. that is when i knew that if i were elected Mayor, i needed to create a place in the central part of the city where people could gather, eat at great restaurants, enjoy the arts and be part of a vibrant community.
it became apparent that the old town area could not function as a new downtown, so we selected the 80 acres of land that was available north of the civic Square complex. this allowed the urban core to continue developing along range line road. the city center project was announced in May of 1997 and construction of the first buildings took place in 2001.
the concepts for the arts & Design District were being formulated as early as 2001 and the project was officially announced 10 years ago at a carmel arts council Gala in november of 2003. at the announcement, i laid out the plan, said we would define the area, which resulted in the design of the gateway arches, and explained that there would be sculptures, fountains and festivals celebrating the arts.
in February 2002, at a demolition ceremony to make way for what is now old town on the Monon Shops and lofts (Muldoon’s and baz-
beaux Pizza building), i discussed the plan for the arts & Design District and city center to eventually grow together. the Midtown Project has been a part of the overall concept from the beginning. Please describe Midtown by area and design. Will it include commercial, residential and retail as well as green spaces? Midtown is intended to be a mix of commercial, residential row houses and single-family lots and retail with a series of green spaces, all centered along an expanded Monon Greenway and new street grid.
the most congested section of the greenway will be separated to provide lanes for pedestrians flanked by bicycle paths, tree rows, and a low-speed street on each side featuring onstreet parking and deep sidewalks. an existing water tower, which needs to be enlarged to better serve the area, will be redesigned into a park like setting including a water feature.
Midtown will be built in several phases. the first phase will focus along 3rd avenue Sw, north of city center Drive. the primary goal is to unify the arts & Design District and city center into a single, larger downtown core.

How will the three revitalized areas of downtown Carmel, City Center and Midtown work together? Will they be connected by walkways and/or public transportation? a redesigned street grid and an expanded Monon Greenway will better connect the arts & Design District and city center areas.

the revitalization of the under-used industrial area west of the Monon Greenway, between the two districts, will activate the entire area as a walkable downtown core. the three districts will complement each other with Midtown providing additional opportunities for residences and workplaces, as well as a physical connection with one of carmel’s most important assets, the Monon trail.
Are there other locations in Carmel slated for redevelopment as well? a well-known urban planner, Jeff Speck, has designed a plan for the revitalization of Merchants’ Square with the intention of making it more walkable. Undeveloped areas within the carmel arts & Design District and city center will continue to develop over the next several years as well. The differences between Carmel today and yesterday’s sleepy suburb are truly amazing. Do you attribute our status as the #1 Best Place to Live in America in 2012 to Carmel’s energetic pace of growth? there is no doubt that the growth of the area was a factor in determining that designation, al-
though there are a number of other things that contributed to that honor. when cnn Money magazine named carmel the number one best place to live in america, we were told that the element that put us over the top, after statistics were compared and communities were visited, was how happy people are to be living in carmel. our redevelopment projects have played an integral role in creating the high quality of life that both business and residential members of our community enjoy. Is there anything else you’d like to discuss? redevelopment in the central core of our city makes sense on so many levels. we already have roads, storm sewers, lighting and public safety in place so development costs less, reduces the need for additional services and increases the density where it can sustain the retail and commercial portions of our redevelopment projects. our redevelopment efforts have also encouraged many public private partnerships in carmel that have created more vibrancy in our central core. Paying close attention to details and creating a thriving community with mixed uses where people can live, work and play, all within walking distance of each other, has improved the landscape of our community.

The window treatments you design create an immediate visual impact. Can throw pillows also update an interior? A lot of our clients have chosen a neutral foundation throughout their home. Pillows as well as drapes, rugs and other accessories can definitely be used to update a palette like this. For instance, you can introduce a bright shade of teal to create splashes of color or you may want to play with texture. We recommend that you bring photos so that our designers are able to get a feel for your style. Also, don’t hesitate to ask a lot of questions while going through a custom process so you can make confident selections. What sizes, numbers and fills work best for pillows? The most common size for throw pillows is 20 x 20 but if you have a larger area you can go with 24 x 24 or a continental 26 x 26 that works beautifully on beds. There’s no rule on symmetry either; whether you have an odd or even number is determined by your space. Pillow fills are important not only for looks but also for comfort. A down/feather combi-

nation works best in most situations and should be used with a protector. Unfortunately there are no nice fiber fills but in some cases this is not as significant. Where can the “design impaired” get their inspiration? Everyone has a “design personality.” To find your inspiration, take a look around your home for things you love. For example, draw colors from a favorite piece of artwork. Decide whether your accessories should emphasize color or texture, create a focal point or tell a story. We suggest that clients visit a website like www.houzz.com to jump start their imaginations; it’s a great way to see what others have done on every kind of budget. What about trends in 2014? Metallics are still hot, especially neutrals with touches of gold. Crystal embellishments are appearing on pillows and add “bling” to lots of accessories. I saw an example at the Atlanta show where a cowhide pillow was embellished with crystal, creating a nice texture play between the hide and crystal. How fun is that?

lot of time and money to promote events and keep things lively. It’s been a great place to have my studio. How do collectors arrange to purchase your artwork and designs? Are you able to customize for clients? Regarding the fine art, people either contact the studio directly or contact my art agent Indy Contemporary to schedule a private meeting. In addition they can come directly to the studio; we’re very open to having visitors drop in. Indy Contemporary is our national contact as well. The interior design and fabric and wall coverings are usually initiated by a call to the studio. Our process for creating fabrics and wall coverings is quite simple; even the custom work is an easy procedure. Interior design projects “moksha” translates as liberation from are more a matter of listening very carefully to ignorance into a state of enlightenment the client and creating a unique environment that is a personal narrative to them imbued with my signature style.
You were one of the first tenants when the IDC opened. What has been your experience? It’s been great to see the center fill up and with that, the energy and activity that’s resulted. I’ve been here three and a half years and I love my space. It’s open, light and very conducive to getting things done. The other thing about more people coming in is that the community has grown as well as the support of all those involved. The IDC spends a
Your artwork has mythological elements. What is the inspiration behind your vision? I love the incorporation of mythological elements in my work. It reminds us that people were here before us, which I think grounds us in the present with universal content and a sense of responsibility. Hopefully this will lead us to appreciate posterity. In addition, I am very involved in helping people to create their own mythology, thereby finding themselves and living that life. Visually I initiate a narrative that expresses this whether it be the artwork, design or interior design.

My career began over thirty years ago in an upscale furniture store north of Indianapolis. Since then I have worked throughout Indiana and thirteen states in the country. After establishing a client base I focused on the finer things in furniture, fabrics, art, lighting and accessories. I’ve been very fortunate in my profession and have built long lasting relationships with customers and manufacturers.
What advice do you have for clients who want to redecorate their home? Make a list and set a path. First you need to decide on the areas that need attention. Be realistic about costs. Chances are it will take more than subtle changes if you have not updated in years. Cosmetic changes may seem easy and affordable but in many cases, a minor refreshing can make everything else look even more dated.
What prompted your move to the IDC? It was evident the Indiana Design Center would become my base. The convenience of having so many vendors within steps of my office was too enticing to pass up. It is the best move I have made in my professional career. The building and location is the place to be for anyone in the design industry. I’ve been able to let go of my personal sample library and work closely with to-the-trade showrooms. There is a priceless energy here and the stage provided by the IDC is very valuable.
Finally, get help. Do not go it alone. Ask the professionals to assist you with your plan and design. Designers are professionals who have been trained in all aspects of a project. They make it look easy on television. It is not.
What design and color trends do you see in 2014? I am not much of a “trend watcher.” What is good for someone is good regardless of the trend of the day or year. Good design is timeless. Overall, I do see people wanting less and going for the understated look. Comfort is always important and maintenance seems to be the way of the future. I welcome it.

Wicker today is multi-purpose. What changes in style and function have you witnessed over your career? My partner Marilyn Krueger and I opened Especially Wicker 26 years ago. Since then the outdoor variety of wicker has become the most popular. New acrylic fabrics withstand sun, moisture and come in an unlimited array of colors and patterns. There’s even a flannel fabric available. Inside I would say the trend is to use wicker as an accent piece rather than as an entire suite. Lots of people like wicker in their second homes. We’ve shipped to over 47 states as well as overseas. Clients today favor neutral palettes that look clean and sophisticated. What about the nature of wicker itself? High quality wicker lacks the fillers that you find in less expensive varieties; fillers are the culprits that cause cracking and peeling. You’ll find lots of color variation in wicker as well, from light to dark to anything in between. One of my favorite materials that can look like wicker or wood is cast aluminum. Absolutely gorgeous and able to withstand all kinds of abuse and weather, plus it won’t blow away.
What services do you offer to help customers make decisions? Our services here and in the 82nd Street store include floor planning, computer drawings, fabric advice; really, we offer a full range of design services. In addition, we carry all kinds of furniture for both indoors and out. If a client wants to see a wide selection, we recommend that they visit the 82nd Street store with over 15,000 square feet of furniture, fabrics and umbrellas. Our shop in the IDC is a perfect place to start a search. How do you like the IDC? We opened Casual Living in March of 2013 because we wanted to expand our reach. We love it here and hope that more people will discover what we have to offer. All our clients are equally important to us whether the job is big or small. It’s been exciting to join the IDC community.

What is the first step towards purchasing a home security system? Because of the recent number of home invasions, many of them on the north side, security has become a hot topic. Everyone wants to safeguard their home and family. The first thing we ask a client is if they have had experience with a home security system before. In many cases there’s an outdated one in place and it’s not used. Older systems communicate analog over phone lines and are historically difficult. New systems operate on the home network with access from smart phone apps that are intuitive and easy to use. So update by replacing the central control system and go high tech with a state-of-theart internet system? That’s the first decision. What areas in and around homes can a security system protect? The most important priority is to cover the perimeter of the home to make it difficult for someone to get in. We then concentrate on all major pathways within the home including the staircases to make sure no one can get to the bedrooms. Home security easily expands into home automation, providing an added level of safety and security. Network based technology provides access to four additional elements crucial to home safety: automatic door locks, cameras, lighting and thermostats. Door locks and cameras are self explanatory but lighting control adds another layer of protection since invaders prefer the dark. Also, a high temperature reading may indicate a fire

and the fire department will be called; too low and the owner will be alerted to prevent pipes from bursting. Home security not only keeps the bad guys out; it also protects the house itself from damage. Is the learning curve challenging? It’s incredibly simple. Most people today have smart phones so they’re at least familiar with technology. There’s even an app with a tutorial and videos which eliminates the need for a manual. The best part is that you can monitor everything away from home on your smart phone. Forgot to turn on your system as you head for the airport? You can do that in the car. Need to unlock the doors for a delivery? Doors can be unlocked and locked again on your phone. Everything is in real time and instantly accessible. That’s the kind of security that leads to peace of mind.

How do you help customers choose between carpet and hard surfaces? Over the last decade there is no question that hard surfaces are supplanting carpet. We’re seeing more and more customers use them in every room of the house. Lots of reasons dictate their popularity, including ease of care, durability and the wide range of options available in both tile and hardwoods. Polyurethane continues to be finish of choice on wood because it’s so easy to maintain and provides such good protection. What trends do you see in contemporary home floor selections? Carpet selection tends to be design driven with emphasis on color, pattern and texture. Tile surfaces have become very dramatic with large scale formats available in virtually unlimited styles and colors. Hardwood planks are also be-
coming wider as warping is no longer a concern. This emphasis on “big” is made possible by modern technology. Does your business include remodeling as well as new construction? It’s not unusual for us to have a number of projects that are large in scope. Currently we’re working on several homes with over 10,000 square feet that require carpet, tile and hardwoods. No job, however, is too small. Deciding to retile a backsplash or recarpet a room takes customers through the same process of discovery as it would if they were starting from scratch. By funneling their input through our experience and expertise, we can help them successfully choose from a wide array of designs, colors, sizes and shapes. The result of this collaboration leads to satisfied clients and beautiful surfaces.

Viewed by runners as an ideal kickoff for spring, it is expected to sell out before April. on’t panic over prom or any other affair; they should be events to look forward to! First you have to find the perfect attire, and 2014 is filled with styles that are fresh, confident and red-carpet ready.
Start with a little sparkle. The latest fashions feature beading and embellishments such as jewels, stones, lace and sequins. Wear some bling and shine all night!
Another eye-catching element is color. The new black is orange, either coral or salmon, along with icy pastels and flashy neons. Subtle shades work as well and include soft, earthy neutrals (nude, blush, cream), cool blues and delicate shades of pink.

Soft, flowing fabrics provide a contemporary fit that is flattering for any body type. Trending for spring are cap sleeves, sheer illusion fabrics and keyhole backs. Of course traditional ball gowns are always elegant and never out of style.

There are no rules on length this year, so let your personal taste be the guide. Go for short and sassy, long and chic or a high-low hemline that shows off your funky side. Tip: Remember to always keep dress styles age appropriate, no matter what age you are. Be bold and always put your best shoe forward. Stiletto’s have replaced the platform and are best with pointed toes and pencil thin heels. Simple flats are appearing with evening wear, as well as peep toes in both stiletto’s and flats. Finally, top off your look with classically coifed hair. An old-world braid, especially the milk braid, is innocent, polished and very trendy. It’s also perfect for keeping hair out of your face while hitting the dance floor. 75

hether your style is traditional or fashion forward, it’s all about the cut of your clothes. The big idea for men this season is the ultra slim european fit which eliminates excess fabric and accents your build and personality.
In formal wear, look for a narrow profile with super trim, peaked lapels. Pair with a white shirt whose collar tips spread straight across and a black tie that knots.

Details define the evening wardrobe. A tie-clip is an important accessory that adds polish to a skinny tie, along with a pocket square for a pop of color. Watches have shed their chunky shape and become sleeker as well. Cufflinks are always cool with French cuff shirts and add an element of elegance to a night on the town. They should complement and not overpower the rest of your outfit. For professional wear, set your sights on tapered lines and lighter weight fabrics. Dress shirts can be patterned in zesty prints like polka dots or textured and worn with or without a tie. Suit pants tend to have one inch breaks. Look for the return of vests without jackets that are buttoned high and fit snugly across the chest. Ties are tucked inside and can be bunched or lay flat. A brand new classic is a huge european trend in 2014; the double-breasted suit has reentered the contemporary closet. In casual wear, men are starting to show everything off. Pants are cuffed or rolled to reveal footwear in everything from traditional shoes to boots. A higher roll is fun with deck shoes. Socks kick it up a notch with pattern and color in comfortable brushed cottons. Consider foot booties this spring to keep your feet comfortable when wearing shorter pants. And lastly, casual wear has gone nautical with blazers over tee shirts, splashes of primary colors and sea worthy motifs that signal ‘good times ahead.’

By anne Hensley Poindexter, Partner camPBell KYle Proffitt llP Spring has finally arrived after a long winter filled with lots of snow and cold temperatures. Along with the seasonal transition come many other changes as well. Spring time means that many of our teenagers will be preparing for senior prom, the conclusion of high school, and the advent of college. The majority of teenagers celebrate their 18th birthday during their senior year of high school, or early in their freshman year in college. For many purposes under the law they become adults. Curfews no longer apply (at least the legal ones, but hopefully your parental ones still do), and they are even old enough to marry without parental consent. Young adults can be charged as adults for even the most minor of criminal offenses. There are also many other new responsibilities or privileges that are suddenly applicable. Our children need to know and understand the legal consequences of becoming an adult. The Indiana State Bar 101

Association publishes a great reference for young adults. It provides a basic overview of various areas of the law. I am happy to provide a copy to you or your teenager upon request. Many parents are surprised to find that they no longer have direct access to their child’s educational, medical and even some financial information once that child turns eighteen. With the proper legal documents in place, and with the agreement of your new young adult, that same access may continue. Powers of Attorney are often helpful for young adults. The documents can give financial and/or medical powers to another person. For example, your young adult can execute a Power of Attorney to allow you to access financial accounts as well as healthcare and educational records. Effectively, it may allow you similar access to information that you had before that child turned eighteen. The majority of young adults I see do name a parent or parents on financial and health care powers. If assets are titled in the name of your teenager, a simple Will or appropriate document may also be needed.

As our children prepare for life after high school, be certain that they have a basic understanding of the legal consequences of becoming an adult. In addition, let them know that they are able to sign various estate planning documents and/or powers of attorney that will allow you to continue to assist them.
