Taste the difference!

All of our cooking is done in our custom–built, 1000 degree anthracite coal–burning oven for a taste unlike anything you have ever experienced. Our sauce is made from scratch with Italian Plum tomatoes, fresh basil and garlic for true old–world fresh tomato taste. We use only the best mozzarella available and we are so picky about taste that we filter all of the water used for our dough and beverages. Letter from the Editor

What a fun issue this turned out to be! Football, tailgating, shopping, sandwiches; there’s not a tedious topic in the bunch. For fans who are counting down the minutes to kick-off, we’ve included schedules from local high schools, colleges and the Colts. The enthusiastic but sports-impaired among us can look forward to huddles around tailgates filled with food. Nothing can beat the aroma of a tasty pot of chili as it wafts through crisp air. You’ll find a recipe for that and other winners in our feature ”Touchdown.” Shopping is a delightful pastime no matter what the time of year. Recently I took my granddaughter along for a photo shoot at Clay Terrace. At the ripe age of seven, she showed up in pearls toting her own bag for goodies. I nixed the jewels but what a testament to shopper genes. She was also instructed to ignore the camera. Ha! Can you say “Park Avenue pose?” Fortunately she’s distractible, which led to some pretty cool pictures. P.S. Note the pearls hanging out of her bag on the front cover. That’s called a compromise.

And then there are the fabulous samples our photographer Chelsea and I got to munch our way through for “Savory Sandwiches.” Once again I was blown away by the innumerable options Carmel has to offer in the way of delicious food. Everything is fresh, custom made and ready to eat, whether you’re on the run or sitting down for a leisurely meal. If you think you know all the good restaurants, just wait a little longer; new ones continue to add tasteful variety to our area. Count on us to keep you in the loop both in print and through our new online magazine to be unveiled this fall. Our next issue will be out in time for the holidays. Until then, root for the home team and keep the chili hot. Editor-In-Chief Jackie Holloway jholloway@carmelcitymagazine.com

The Carmel City Center and Arts & Design District, combined with lures such as highly ranked public schools, meticulous streets and sidewalks and a negligible crime rate, have helped Carmel evolve from a town on the outskirts of Indianapolis into a city in its own right. Its 161 acre Central Park includes the popular Monon Greenway, a water park and fitness center which are state-of-the-art facilities. With its own symphony orchestra and community theater, not to mention a gleaming public library, art galleries and one-of-a-kind boutique shopping, Carmel is no longer just a premier suburb. It has emerged as a destination city with a hometown atmosphere where residents can live the American dream.

What’s in a Smile? (More than you might think)

WAYNE KINNEY, DDS DENTIST KEYSTONE DENTISTRY

I’m Wayne. I have a different idea. They say that if you smile at the world, the world will smile back at you. I’m surprised at how often people underestimate the impact of a great-looking smile. It’s not just cosmetic, and it’s not a commodity; your smile influences your confidence, your emotional health, and your quality of life. That’s why I have spent 30 years becoming not just a dentist, but a dental craftsman. All dentistry has cosmetic as well as health components, and I work hard to balance the art and science of the alignment, shape, and color of your teeth as well as their overall condition—because your smile is about more than your teeth; it’s about your life. Changing the world, one smile at a time. Now that’s a different idea. And a better one. Call us at (317) 575-1120. Let’s talk. www.keystonedentistry.com

Part four:

living in Carmel new Home construction lombArdo homes

CArmel hAs long been known for neighborhoods that offer the very best in contemporary lifestyles. After all, it was voted the #1 best place to live in America in 2012 by CNN Money Magazine. With a wide range of prices and architecture, Carmel continues to expand its inventory of homes. In this issue we’ll meet a new builder coming into our market. Ed Hackett is Division President of Lombardo Homes and agreed to discuss his company’s plans for expansion. Can you give us a little history of Lombardo Homes? Cosimo Lombardo and Antoinette Moceri founded Lombardo Homes in Michigan 50 years ago. It has since become one of the largest and most respected new homebuilders and developers in the Midwest. The second generation is now at the helm with Anthony Lombardo serving as CEO, and siblings Anna Lisa, Cathy and Sebastian, who oversee office operations, property management and the custom homes division respectively. As a service-focused operation dedicated to building quality homes and developing lifestyle neighborhoods, Lombardo expanded into St. Louis in 2011 and is moving to establish itself in Indianapolis and desirable areas such as Carmel.

www.CarmelCityMagazine.com

Why did you choose our area for expansion? Since the Indianapolis area has a similar demographic to both Southeastern Michigan and the St. Louis area, many of our proprietary designs and processes can be replicated here. It is also attractive because its strong employment base provides a stable housing environment combined with affordable prices and ample land. Just as importantly, we believe our company’s focus on quality, respect for customers and communities, and commitment to providing them with a customized, positive experience will resonate with Hoosiers. Who is your target demographic? Lombardo Homes is primarily interested in the “second home buyer” and “multi move-up buyer.” Our customers are typically families who have moved from starter to mid-priced homes, to upscale neighborhoods and are now ready for a high-end luxury home.

How would you define Lombardo Homes with regard to exterior elevations and interior layouts? Our company is entering Central Indiana with its “Traditions Series” of home plans. There are nine plans in this series, each with multiple elevations that are stick-framed with heavy masonry, three-car side load garages, full basements with nine-foot ceilings, Pex plumbing system with manifold, and a landscape package. Lombardo partners with well-known providers of high-end finishes for interiors rather than maintaining a centralized showroom of their own. This affords clients maximum flexibility to choose flooring, cabinets, counter tops and other finishes based on their preferences, not their builder.

“…our company’s focus on quality, respect for customers and communities, and commitment to providing them with a customized, positive experience will resonate with Hoosiers.” – ed Hackett, Division President, lombardo Homes 100

Where will you build and when do you expect to be up and running? Our first homes will open in Geist Woods Estates in August and Plainfield in September. We are also building in Avon, Plainfield, Brownsburg, Fishers, Greenfield and Perry Township. Lombardo has identified a parcel in Carmel and hopes to be in construction there by this time next year. Currently there are five homes under construction and we plan to have 15 – 20 completed this year.

Are there locals on your management team? A team of locals manages Lombardo Homes Indianapolis. I am from Indianapolis and graduated from Ball State with a Bachelor of Science degree. The same holds true for my director of construction operations; both of us have been in the Indianapolis building industry for 25 years. We plan to add additional local talent to our management team as we grow in this market.

Please include any other comments you’d like to make. Since Carmel and the Indianapolis market are very competitive, we know that we need to differentiate ourselves out of the gate. Our high quality basics of vinyl-clad windows, walk-in pantries and heavy masonry immediately set us apart from the majority of builders. Lombardo’s Discovery Event™ is also unique and involves a deep dive into a customer’s current and future needs. This allows us to make the home as livable and relevant ten years from now as it is today. Many builders lead customers to what they want to sell. Through our Discovery Event™, Lombardo Homes will lead you to the home you want to buy. Thanks to ed Hackett Division President, lombardo Homes
