Letter from the Editor

I’ve never been a car buff. To me the automobile is an obligatory, somewhat irascible beast of burden, and as long as it starts and stops on cue everything is fine. If I bump and scrape along the way, that’s okay too. I never lack for packs of ketchup and spare napkins in case I slam a burger and fries en route, and sometimes I’ll find calcified remains weeks after dining. So this issue’s feature on cars was not high on my list of favorite topics. After interviews with mechanics and service personnel, though, I’ve resolved to become a better parent, er, owner. Fortunately my husband has taken up the slack in the past with oil changes and maintenance, but in the future I plan to be more proactive. These guys were inspiring! One mechanic got so excited talking about engines that he almost dragged me out to look under a hood. I passed but was very impressed with his enthusiasm. Perhaps you can learn something too when you read “All About Autos.” Photographic sessions are always a hoot and Chelsea and I particularly look forward to stops with food. “Cosmopolitan Cuisine” gave us a chance to sample international flavors served in very chic surroundings. A few of the restaurants are brand new and Carmel continues to impress with its growing array of fine eateries.

And aren’t the puppies cute….ahhh. “Pet Perfect” takes you on a tour of local spas, day care and boarding facilities for our four-legged companions. I swear some of these businesses could accommodate humans. Really, check out their services and the amazing professionals who staff them. The Fido’s in our area are nicely served. With the promise of summer adventures ahead, here’s hoping you hit the road with a welltuned engine and a perfectly coiffed dog to enhance your ride. Some fast food along the way would be nice too. Have fun! Editor-In-Chief Jackie Holloway jholloway@carmelcitymagazine.com

A Look Back

written by Steve Holloway, Publisher

Get your motor running Head out on the highway Looking for adventure And whatever comes our way. Steppenwolf, Born to be Wild – 1968

www.CarmelCityMagazine.com

THE all time greatest song of modern rock. Ah, the decade of the 60’s. A time of adventure with no kids, mortgage or frets over health insurance. Shoot, our health was too good to even think about coverage. Cars were a big part of growing up in the south and nothing will ever come close to the muscle cars of that era. Their style, raw power and flash seemed to attract the prettiest girls, too. A walk through our college campus, where I spent “the best seven years of my life,” would make an audience at a Barrett-Jackson car auction go crazy. Oldsmobile 442’s, Ford Mustangs, Pontiac GTO’s, Chevrolet SS Camero’s, and the mother of them all, 1963-64 Chevy Corvette Sting Rays, were scattered across college parking lots. If I owned ten of those cars, they would now be worth more than two million dollars! Did someone say, “What happened to my 401K and IRA’s with balanced portfolios? I wish I had my college car today. On loan from my parents, it was a bright yellow Chevrolet Impala with a 283 cubic engine and solid black interior. Not a muscle car, but definitely a keeper in today’s classic car market revival. In high school I drove a 1963 Corvair Spyder black on black convertible. It was a cool looking

12

vehicle, and my friends and I loved to put the top down as we cruised small Tennessee drive-ins on Friday and Saturday nights. Since the air-cooled engine sounded like a window air conditioner, I placed a cut-out in the exhaust pipe in front of the muffler to give it a nice roar. Six years ago I had a nostalgia attack and bought a ’64 Spyder from California on the internet that looks just like it, except it’s yellow (shades of college) with a black interior. When my wife and I take short drives around Carmel, I can remember the good times and forget the not so good. My wife doesn’t like the Corvair as much as I do, but one of these days I’ll tune it up, install some seat belts and give our grandkids a taste of riding in a fun vintage car. If you see a bright yellow Chevrolet Corvair Spyder convertible out and about, give it a double blast on your horn as a salute to the 60’s! The top will be down with Steppenwolf cranked up on the radio, and all will be as it was many years ago. Well, not quite…..but a trip down memory lane doesn’t carry a lot of baggage. For that matter, neither does the Corvair.

eciding on what size of crossover to buy can be tricky. Do you get a large crossover for maximum interior space and roomy third-row seating? Or do you get a small crossover for easier urban maneuverability and higher fuel economy? For most, the middle ground is the way to go, which is why the 2013 Ford Edge midsize crossover is a winner with many shoppers. It’s no wonder, considering the Edge’s relatively manageable size, its attractive interior and many available high-tech features, like items such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning and cross-traffic alert, a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system, the Sync voice command system and the MyFord Touch electronic interface. The Edge’s driving dynamics appear European in character, with a feeling of solidity and low road noise. A 285-horsepower V6 engine is standard, and a fuel-efficient, turbocharged four-cylinder engine is optional. Believe it or not, you have to pay extra to get the four-cylinder, but its strong power and impressive fuel economy (30 mpg highway) make it a smart choice. The 2013 Ford Edge is categorized as a midsize crossover SUV with seating for five passengers. It comes in SE, SEL, Limited and Sport trim levels.

The base SE comes standard with a V6 engine, 17-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a trip computer, reclining rear seats, a six-speaker sound system with a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack. The Convenience Package adds rear parking sensors, sub-floor cargo organizer, exterior keypad entry, automatic headlights and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Also optional are satellite radio and the Sync voice-command interface

(including Bluetooth and USB/iPod connectivity) as part of the 101A Option Package. The Edge SEL includes all the SE’s equipment along with 18-inch wheels, exterior keypad entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, a USB port, an eight-way power driver seat (includes power lumbar), an “EasyFold” second-row seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Leather Comfort Package adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, a six-way power passenger seat with manual recline and fold-flat capability. Also available are a rearview camera and the MyFord Touch system, which is an electronics interface that includes a large central touchscreen, two secondary screens in the gauge cluster, enhanced steering wheel controls, enhanced Ford Sync features (turn-by-turn navigation and traffic reports) and a second USB port for audio devices. The SEL appearance package adds 20-inch wheels, specific head- and tail lamp treatments, a body-colored grille and unique leather seating. From there, the Edge lineup forks into two directions. The Edge Limited comes with most of the above equipment plus 18-inch chrome wheels, heated mirrors, an eight-way power passenger seat and a twelve-speaker Sony sound system with HD radio. The Driver Entry Package includes keyless ignition/entry, remote ignition and a power liftgate (available separately on the SEL). You can also choose from 20-inch wheels, xenon headlamps and an adaptive cruise control with a collision warning system. The Edge Sport, in contrast, comes with all of the SEL’s standard equipment along with a more powerful V6 engine, 22-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, special exterior styling and the Sony sound system. To find out more about the brilliant Ford Edge, schedule a test drive at Tom Wood Ford in Carmel.

FORD EDGE Smart with Gas, Brilliant with Everything Else Review written by Tom Wood Ford

oming from rather humble beginnings, the Porsche 911 has become one of the most recognizable vehicles in the world. Today’s 911 delivers stunning levels of performance without sacrificing much daily drivability. The latest generation 911 is larger and boasts an updated suspension, electric power steering, the world’s first seven-speed manual transmission and a more powerful and efficient engine. The 911 Carrera is available in either coupe or convertible (Cabriolet) body styles, and features a 350-horsepower 3.4-liter flat-6 engine, while the Carrera S has a 400-hp 3.8-liter flat-6. Both have the seven-speed manual transmission or the optional dual-clutch seven-speed automated manual called the PDK. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is optional. Even more exciting, the all-wheel-drive Turbo has a twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat-6 with a mind blowing 500 hp while the Turbo S has an extra 23 hp. Step up to the rear-drive, sport-tuned GT3 and you’ll get a 435-hp naturally aspirated 3.8-liter flat-6 under the hood. The GT3 RS is a track-ready version of the same car but with 450 hp. There’s also a GT3 RS 4.0 version with a 4.0-liter flat-6 that make 500 hp. Just when you thought Porsche couldn’t squeeze any more performance out of the 911, they created a GT2 RS with a version of the Turbo S engine pumped up to a shocking 620 hp. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on all and PDK is optional on all but the GT3 and GT2 trims. When it comes to handling, the 911 is amazingly comfortable tearing through a twisty Indiana road or smoothly dealing with the daily commute on a straight-line highway. The PDK dual-clutch automated manual gearbox rewards drivers with the best of both transmission worlds. The 911 models with amped up performance are less commuter-friendly, but they serve up performance and handling that competes with exotic supercars. Most buyers will find that the base 911 Carrera should be more than enough since it launches from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds with a top speed close to 180 mph. Handling is incredible, so much so that the new 911 isn’t far off from the capabilities of the GT models. Whichever 911 you choose, you get a sports car with a long bloodline and pure heritage that’s sure to boost your adrenaline. Best of all, you can find the 911 Porsche right here in Carmel at Tom Wood Porsche Audi. Your own adrenaline test drive is just minutes away!

ow can you find an automobile mechanic you know you can trust? The best way to find a good mechanic is through word of mouth; talk to your friends and neighbors, or if you’re new to the area, do a local search online. The more experience a mechanic has the better. I think it takes a minimum of 10 years before someone can be considered competent. One of our mechanics worked with a crew at the Indy 500 and he’s been with us for 15 years. You can’t beat that kind of experience. How often should you tune-up your car? Do the new computerized models even need to be tuned-up? You really should get your car checked every five – ten thousand miles or twice a year. Too many miles without a tune-up is pushing your luck. Fuel today with blended ethanol is harder on engines. What’s better for the environment isn’t necessarily what’s better for your car. The cabin air filter in particular should be changed every other oil change, which is often overlooked. You know that weird smell that a car can sometimes get? That’s mildew. A new cabin filter could take care of that. It’s the same with the newer models too. They’re the same as older cars, just more electronics and buttons.

on a regular basis, then fill up with a higher octane at least once a month. This will help burn off excess fuel in the sticky stuff that’s built up in the engine and keep it cleaner. The fuel injector system should be cleaned every two years just to make sure gas is burned as efficiently as possible. When is it time to sell your car or trade it in? Usually it’s time to sell or trade when maintenance costs and repairs start costing more than a monthly payment for a new car. There’s an inconvenience factor too; how much time do you want to spend running to the repair shop? Your car’s value is also a big consideration. Talk to your mechanic and keep tabs on your car’s value by consulting the Kelley Blue Book. Sometimes, though, people become attached to a car and are willing to nurse it long past its retirement age. It’s not always a question of dollars and cents. Do you have a story about a car you saved and rebuilt? There’s a 1970’s Jenson Interceptor that was restored in our Indy location. Every single component in the engine had to be rebuilt. I think you can see a similar model in one of the Fast and Furious movies. We’re all car buffs here, though, so it’s a rewarding, fun job.

Does it pay long term to follow the manufacturer’s schedule for service or should you wait until the car breaks down? Follow the schedule; it increases the life of a vehicle almost more than anything else you can do. For one thing your car will be more fuel efficient and we all know what gas costs these days. For another, it’s two to three times cheaper to prevent a problem rather than repair it. Reputable car repair shops are there to help customers avoid breakdowns as much as they are to fix problems. How many miles can you expect to get out of a car? At Pete’s Service we focus on European cars and with proper maintenance they can last anywhere from 250,000 – 500,000 miles. We have one customer that regularly brings in her 1988 Volkswagen Cabrio with over 500,000 miles. Regular oil changes and following the manufacturer’s guidelines are key. All schedules are different; there’s a check-list for each model just like there is for an airplane. We also recommend using 93 octane or “premium” gas. Regular gas can clog the engine and cause the sensors to not work properly. If you don’t want to buy premium

ow do you choose a tire for your car? Is it based on your model, driving needs or habits? All of the above, but more often than not, tires that come with a car are correct. When it’s time to purchase a new set, always look at the manufacturer’s specifications located on the driver’s pillar or door. Basically there are four categories to choose from: Performance tires that are softer so they can grip the road Touring tires that are quiet and last over a long period of time Truck tires that provide durability and toughness Blends that combine performance and touring characteristics for all-season travel When you choose one over another, you’re trading off attributes, and that’s where your driving preferences come into play. How are tires rated for speed, durability and traction? Codes have grown in complexity over the years to cover multiple uses and are described by an alphanumeric code molded into the sidewall. Most passenger car tires generally fall between R – S with corresponding numbers between 106 mph – 112 mph. That denotes they’ve been tested at those speeds with approved braking distances and traction.

3 – 4/32. Despite bigger tires, the “contact patch” where the rubber meets the road is still minimal; that’s why treads are so important. Is it necessary to align your wheels with a new tire purchase? Even used tires on your car should be checked for proper alignment every spring because of pot holes and winter driving. Alignment means that the car’s suspension is correctly positioned in relation to its tires so that they’re straight and flat, and not bowed out or in. Always check the alignment with a new tire purchase to protect your investment. If you balance your tires as well, both of these procedures add miles to the life of your tires. The subject of tires is pretty technical; is there anything else you’d like to mention? 65% of our business in Carmel is with families and the rest is commercial. I’ve considered doing a class for anyone who wants to learn about tires, since they are vital to the safety of everyone on the road. The more informed you become, the better your decision when it comes to choosing tires for your car.

How often are tires rotated? To improve longevity, manufacturers recommend that you rotate your tires every 5,000 – 7,000 miles or every time you get an oil change. They’re moved from front to back and crossed over. Once or twice during the life of the tires, their balance should be checked as well. When we talk about balancing your tires, that means the technician is checking the tires’ spin to insure that they’re spinning correctly to produce a smoother ride on the road. Is there a formula to determine when tires should be replaced? Tires have become bigger and wider which means they’re typically safer. While consumers like the way they look, feel and perform, they don’t necessarily last longer. High performance tires on an average vehicle last from 40,000 – 80,000 miles. The legal limit for running a tire is when its tread is worn to a width of 2/32; that’s the same distance from the top of Lincoln’s head on a penny to the edge of the coin. At that point it’s absolutely necessary to replace it. For safety reasons, however, you should change a tire when its treads are worn to around

TIRE TALK

Interview with Brett Bobrow, Manager Indy Tire and Auto Service

I

f I’m in a collision, what do I do if my car isn’t drivable? If you feel that your vehicle isn’t safe to drive after an accident, you should have it towed. If you have an auto body shop that you prefer, I would suggest having the vehicle towed to their location to avoid hefty storage fees often charged by tow companies. Depending on your insurance policy, towing charges may be covered under your claim if you decide to file. Do collision repair centers charge for an estimate? Most auto body shops do not charge for estimates. Years ago shops did charge due to the fact that all estimates were hand written and every part and procedure had to be looked up in a book. Now shops use estimating systems to produce a computerized estimate at no charge. Do I need to get more than one estimate for insurance purposes? In the state of Indiana, you are only required to obtain one estimate. Most of the time, insurance companies will send their adjuster to write an estimate. An insurance company may suggest that you take your car to their preferred shop or DRP for an estimate and/or repair, but under Indiana state law you can choose to have your vehicle repaired anywhere you want. How long does a repair generally take? Repair times vary by the amount of work needed to restore the vehicle to pre-damage condition. Our average cycle time is 4 – 6 business days. Do repair centers help coordinate claims with insurance companies? Like most shops we work with every major insurance company. Once you have filed the initial claim, we assist with everything else. We work for you to ensure that any hidden damage not seen at the time of the estimate is taken care of by the insurance company. As far as general maintenance, what’s included in exterior and interior detailing? There are various packages to fit customer needs. Our complete detail service includes: hand wash & chamois dry, moderate bug & tar removal, clean tires, rims & wheel wells, clean door jams, application of wax mist, detail logos & trim, dress tires & trim, vacuum interior &

trunk, shampoo upholstery, carpets, seats & floor mats, clean & dress all interior vinyl, clean & condition leather, clean windows inside & out, clean mirrors & ashtray, detail dash & console, and detail door & instrument panels. This can run from a couple of hours up to a full six hours for a complete package. How often do you recommend that a car is detailed? A complete detail should be done once a year. Normally I’ll do a full detail with paint correction in the spring, and then a wash/clay/sealant/wax in the late fall to protect the paint in winter. What about working on “classic” cars? Most would consider a “classic car” to be 20 to 40 years old, while cars 45 years and older fall into the “antique” category. There are many levels of restoration, and often the condition of that vehicle dictates what is involved. It also depends on what the customer wants. If they want a show worthy vehicle, this could require a complete frame-off restoration. Every panel, molding, part, engine, suspension and electrical system is gone through so that it is prepped and painted back to factory quality. What is the most extensive restoration you’ve done and what was the make and model? That would be the restoration we did on a rare 1969 Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500. This vehicle was a frameoff restoration. Every detail, including the original paint drips, was exactly replicated. It took nearly three years to complete.

B

eing in an automobile accident, no matter how minor, is a scary thing to experience. Your independent insurance agent should be able to provide you with a card to keep in your glove box that lists everything you need to do if an accident occurs. Here is what I recommend you do:

1

Take a deep breath and assess the situation. Get your vehicle and passengers out of harm’s way if the vehicle is still operable.

2

Make sure that no one in your vehicle requires immediate medical attention. Next check the occupants of any other vehicle involved.

3

Call the police. It doesn’t matter how minor the accident is. Having a police report filed will make your claim process much smoother.

4

to see that those amounts are not going to get you very far when it is time to settle a claim. They also provide you zero protection from motorists that drive around without insurance or with the inadequate state minimum insurance. I recommend limits of $250,000 per injured person, $500,000 per accident and $100,000 for property damage with an endorsement to protect you from uninsured and underinsured motorists. These raised limits will also allow you to add a personal umbrella policy to further protect you in extreme cases. You can also get a nice discount by packaging these policies together with your homeowner’s policy. Adding comprehensive and collision coverages and adjusting the cost of your deductibles is something you should talk about with your independent agent.

Exchange insurance information and record the details. Make sure the other driver’s insurance is not out of date. Get their phone number, address, license plate number and the make and model of their car to make filing your claim easier.

5

Pull out your camera phone and snap some pictures of your car from every angle and include any damage that was incurred.

6

Obtain a copy of the police report and call your independent agent to file a claim.

Driving without insurance coverage in Indiana is illegal and a great way to end up with a suspended license or serious financial problems if you are involved in an accident. The starting point for insurance in Indiana is the required state minimum coverages. The minimums are $25,000 per injured person, $50,000 per accident and $10,000 for property damage. The current costs of medical expenses and auto repair make it pretty easy

TONY SACCO’S COAL OVEN PIZZA Tony Sacco’s was started by three friends whose mission was to bring back the original taste and quality of pizza the way it was made when the first pizzerias were opened in the early 1900’s. CONTAINER GARDENING WITH ANNUALS _____________________________ Written by Mario Mirelez

P

lanting annuals and tropical plants in containers is a great

way to transform your garden or patio area. With so many flower and foliage color and texture choices, it’s easy to

create a dazzling arrangement in any size or shape of con-

tainer. Within minutes you can design focal points, entry accents or centerpieces for outdoor tablescapes.

Before you get caught up with all the riotous colors, study the

silhouette of each plant. Soon you’ll discover the three essential forms that plants fall into: tall and towering, round and full, and

trailing or cascading. Utilizing these three forms will always lead to a well-balanced design. Another way to think of it is “Thriller, Filler, and Spiller.” For container groupings, designate a single pot

55

Burgandy annual grasses with Pink and White Begonias, White Angelonia, Pink Lantana and variegated English Ivy.

Red Begonias, Red Impatiens, Licorice Plant, with Blue and White Lobelia

56

for each of the plant forms. Push the individual pots together to create an even larger display.

Bigger plants create a dramatic effect instantaneous-

ly, and also add pizzazz to parties and special events. With careful handling, you can even disassemble mature

hanging baskets and instantly add the “spiller” effect to your container. When some of the plants begin to fade,

simply pop them out and replace them with new ones. A single plant in decline can diminish the entire effect of your container.

When certain plants begin to take over, it may be

necessary to prune them back so they don’t steal the

show. On the other hand, if you favor the flamboyant

character taking center stage, let it go and enjoy the exuberance! Remember, you are in control, not the plants.

Keep in mind that plants will continue to grow through-

out the season and that they will not all grow at the same rate. Edit away.

People do most of their container gardening in late

spring or early summer, but it can really be done all

year long. Not everything in your pot needs to be living.

You may choose from a variety of preserved limbs and brambles to add structure and interest to your containers. Keep those to a minimum– you’ll get far more satisfaction from watching the live plants grow and transform. And don’t abandon your containers in winter. Create

beautiful displays by combining holiday greenery with

winterberry, dogwood twigs and curly willow branches for visual interest all winter. Holiday greenery is a must so you’re not staring at empty vessels waiting for spring to arrive.

Not a confident gardener? There is really no better

way to dip your toe into the gardening world than with

container gardening. With a few plants, a bag of potting mix and the container of your choice, you’ll soon be on your way to adding a burst of color to your life and home.

The Carmel City Center and Arts & Design District, combined with lures such as highly ranked public schools, meticulous streets and sidewalks and a negligible crime rate, have helped Carmel evolve from a town on the outskirts of Indianapolis into a city in its own right. Its 161 acre Central Park includes the popular Monon Greenway, a water park and fitness center which are state-of-the-art facilities. With its own symphony orchestra and community theater, not to mention a gleaming public library, art galleries and one-of-a-kind boutique shopping, Carmel is no longer just a premier suburb. It has emerged as a destination city with a hometown atmosphere where residents can live the American dream.

CARMEL FACTS & FIGURES • Population of 81,534 • City named “The Best Place To Live in America” by Money Magazine • 6th highest per capita income in US • 58.5% of residents hold bachelor’s degree or higher • Lowest overall tax rate in the state for city this size or larger • Carmel High School has 96% graduation rate • 93% of Carmel High School students attend college • Carmel Clay Public Library is ranked 6th nationwide

What’s in a Smile? (More than you might think)

WAYNE KINNEY, DDS DENTIST KEYSTONE DENTISTRY

I’m Wayne. I have a different idea. They say that if you smile at the world, the world will smile back at you. I’m surprised at how often people underestimate the impact of a great-looking smile. It’s not just cosmetic, and it’s not a commodity; your smile influences your confidence, your emotional health, and your quality of life. That’s why I have spent 30 years becoming not just a dentist, but a dental craftsman. All dentistry has cosmetic as well as health components, and I work hard to balance the art and science of the alignment, shape, and color of your teeth as well as their overall condition—because your smile is about more than your teeth; it’s about your life. Changing the world, one smile at a time. Now that’s a different idea. And a better one. Call us at (317) 575-1120. Let’s talk. www.keystonedentistry.com

At Animal Arts Academy, Kristie Stewart directs classes for students as well as grooming for her clients’ pets. It’s a job which keeps her very busy. “Kevin Stewart and his mom opened the business 30 years ago and for over 24 years, we were the only State Accredited School for Pet Grooming in Indiana,” Kristie says. “As such, our professionalism, experience, technique and training methods are without compare.” Classes are held three times a year and last three months each session. The rest of the Stewarts’ time is devoted to grooming their huge pet clientele. According to Kristie, “At Animal Arts we have a cage-free facility and everything is out front and in the open. Dogs are able to play or hang out with others while waiting their turn. They aren’t nearly as nervous and in fact look forward to coming. Separate rooms are available if a dog needs privacy.” There is a staff of three state certified groomers available and on occasion student groomers are available at a 50% discount. Since Kristie is there to supervise, results are always up to their exacting standards. As administrator at Animal Arts, Kevin loves his job. “We focus on how to analyze pets’ behavior and handle those that are difficult without resorting to strong-arm techniques. At the Academy, we put our students on course for a successful, fulfilling career. For those of us who care about animals and people, it’s a wonderful life.”

Camp Bow Wow Carmel provides an “open play” atmosphere with three separate indoor/outdoor play areas, plus a Teacup Yard for small campers 15 lbs and under. Your best friend will have plenty of space to romp, snooze or hang out with other pups and will be placed in the best area to match his or her size, temperament and activity level. Overnight Campers enjoy a spacious and individual cabin and a special “campfire treat” before bedtime. Each Camper will be fed according to your specifications and include necessary medications at no extra charge. One of our most popular features is our live Camper Cams! While you’re away, you can see your dogs on your cell phone with the Camp Bow Wow App. No need for a computer; with this app watch your pups at Camp from your iPhone. After a full day of play at Camp Bow Wow, treat your dog to a “Puptastic” and pick up a squeaky clean and tired pup at the end of the day. The Puptastic includes a full shampoo bath and conditioner, a dry and brush out, a gentle ear and eye cleaning, a nail trim and grind, a spritz for the coat and a breath freshener. We top it off with a sporty bandana and your dog is ready to go!

club canine Club Canine is a 6,000 square foot facility where dogs can play off-leash all day in an open play environment while their parents are at work or when they just need some extra fun and exercise. Working full time can make it difficult to have pets, but many people find that utilizing doggie daycare even a day or two per week allows them to have a dog and enjoy that companionship in their free time without worrying about leaving him home all day, every day, by himself. The benefits of attending doggie daycare include tiring out highenergy dogs, learning and practicing social skills with other dogs, and helping curb undesirable behaviors at home. We provide an outlet for excess energy that can lead to mischief. Your dog can also be scheduled for a shampoo and blow–dry so he’s squeaky clean for his trip back home. The only area daycare owned and operated by an Applied Canine Behavior Specialist, Club Canine is dedicated to providing the safest and most enjoyable play experience possible. Sometimes dogs just need to have fun being a dog!

Located on the Monon Trail one block south of Main Street, Happy Dog Hotel and Spa also boasts of their exceptional professional services. Co-owner Beverly Schroeder says, “It’s the care of our doggie guests which is most important to us.” And care they do. Guests are treated to scrambled eggs with breakfast, offered massages and given room service along with special one-on-one time. And let’s not forget the spa! Guests enjoy warm water massaging baths, all natural shampoos, blueberry facials, Dead Sea mud scrubs, dry paw treatments, nail filings and even polish. Grooming is a high priority. “The gentle and experienced groomers are exceptional,” says client Debra Turner. She’s been bringing her pup Winnie to Happy Dog since it opened. And if your pup likes to play with other pooches, the doggie daycare at Happy Dog is their oasis. An intimate and sunny space provides ample fun, toys and blankets for snuggling. Think your furry friend would love it here too? Don’t wait too long to make a reservation. The hotel can be fully booked weeks in advance.

Large sun-lit rooms accommodate all kinds of drop-off and pick-up schedules without crowding pets that wait. While surgeries can be performed only at Companion’s 24/7 Emergency Hospital on S. Rangeline Road, acupuncture can be scheduled with Dr. Pechette at the Wellness Center in WestClay. Jennifer feels acupuncture promotes healing, reduces arthritic pain, improves flexibility andstimulates blood flow. Regular check-ups for cats and dogs can also be scheduled by appointment. Through its excellent grooming and health care, Companion Wellness Center can enhance the lives of family pets.

PART THREE:

Living in Carmel Old Town Carmel WRITTEN BY JUSTIN MOFFETT

A LITTLE BIT OF COUNTRY surrounds Carmel’s bustling

downtown. Its city streets segue into shady avenues lined with lawns, pretty homes and inhabitants of all ages. Read on as local developer Justin Moffett takes us on a personal tour of Old Town’s history and its plans for the future. Can you give us some history about the neighborhood and homes that comprise Old Town Carmel? Old Town Carmel is an eclectic village of several hundred homes and businesses with some structures dating back to the early 1800’s. Many people now know the area as the Arts & Design District, but folks who grew up in Carmel know the area as Old Town. It’s changed rapidly in

TAKES ON A WHOLE NEW MEANING at

THE STRATFORD.

People that already moved to The Stratford know the secret: You get to have more fun here because you never have to worry about bill paying, housekeeping, dining, maintenance, and all the other mundane items that can eat up your day. Here‌ it’s wellness classes, parties, art, family, friends, games, and freedom. You could stay independent longer. You could have a higher quality of life. You could increase your health. Simply put, you could have more fun.

my family and most of my siblings have bought homes here, too. I started in the building and development business after college and learned the ropes from a few good mentors. When I decided to start my own business it became obvious that I didn’t need to travel too far to find opportunity. With the tremendous investment the City of Carmel has made in improving the old town area, I decided there wouldn’t be a better place for me to invest than the neighborhood where I grew up.

the last twenty years from a largely industrial and residential area with numerous abandoned building and empty storefronts to a thriving, livable downtown. It’s really come full circle to being the hub of activity again for Carmel as it once was 100 years ago. When did you first become interested in developing/building homes in this area? I grew up in Old Town. My parents and grandparents still live in the neighborhood and now 106

Are most of your homes built after the original structure is torn down? Are there homes that have been remodeled as well? The Old Town Design Group is primarily a builder and developer of single family homes, but we have completed a few remodeling projects of older homes in the area. We’ve redeveloped quite a few sites in Old Town Carmel where a dilapidated structure was removed to make room for a modern, energy efficient home with traditional architecture. When we started there were several larger parcels to be developed where we didn’t have to tear down existing homes.

There is a broad mix of beautiful old homes

“Old Town Carmel is an eclectic village of several hundred homes and businesses with some structures dating back to the early 1800’s. Many people now know the area as the Arts & Design District, but folks who grew up in Carmel know the area as Old Town.” – Justin Moffett, The Old Town Design Group and the not-so-beautiful homes in poor condition. Our policy is to rehab properties that are in good shape and make sense architecturally and redevelop properties that don’t add to the character of the neighborhood. How many lots are still available? Building opportunities change on a weekly basis in Old Town Carmel. We’re constantly looking at redevelopment opportunities and buying

properties for that purpose. However, we do have lots available at one of our communities, Cobblestone on the Monon, which is at 136th Street and the Monon Trail.

We’ve found a strong interest from Carmel home buyers in the style of home Old Town Design Group builds, but with so few building opportunities in old town we decided to build another subdivision on the east side of Carmel called Gray Oaks. It’s just south of 146th Street on Gray Road and the homes will have similar architecture to our old town homes, but in a more traditional neighborhood setting. Discuss some of the benefits of living in an ‘urban neighborhood,’ i.e. proximity to downtown and the Monon Greenway. Everything is about walkability and access. I have the good fortune of living and working in the core of Carmel. My children go to school in old town and we can do most of our shopping

here, too. It’s not just about ditching the car, but having less distance to travel is a key reason people have interest in living in an urban neighborhood. With the added benefit of restaurants, entertainment, the farmer’s market, the trail system and parks there are just so many good reasons why we would choose to be in the urban core of Carmel than anywhere else in Central Indiana. What are the demographics (retired, young families) of this area?

www.CarmelCityMagazine.com

The broad age demographic of Old Town Carmel is one of my favorite things about the area. Our family has four generations living in the neighborhood from ages one to eighty seven. An element we keep running into in our area is family. I have worked with four clients in the last year to bring either parents or adult children to the neighborhood so families could live closer to each other. That’s been one of the most rewarding parts of my business. I love seeing families want to be closer together.

I think the urban core of Carmel is such a unique draw in that there is really so much to offer for all ages. Do you anticipate more development in Old Town or other areas around Carmel?

Our company is actively working on new developments in Old Town Carmel and the east and west sides of the city. We’ve found that our home styles, floor plans, and price point appeal to a broad group of prospective home owners and we’re working to expand the areas where we’re building.
