A day with Nicolette and Sarah Com’è nata la vostra collaborazione? Ci siamo incontrate sei anni fa per caso. All’epoca non c’erano molti fioristi dal sapore naturale e romantico a Brooklyn e quando abbiamo scoperto che i nostri lavori erano simili abbiamo intuito che era meglio collaborare che competere. Durante il nostro primo incontro abbiamo parlato di astrologia, della cantante Stevie Nicks e dei nostri fidanzati, ma non abbiamo mai nominato i fiori. Adesso siamo molto unite, come spesso succede quando fai lo stesso lavoro. Ne sono molto contenta è un’amicizia vera. Quali sono le influenze reciproche che vi siete scambiate? Nicolette e io prendiamo molti spunti dalla natura stessa e dal garden design.
Iniziamo scegliendo i fiori per l’evento cercando nei campi e nei giardini intorno a noi utilizzando fiori di stagione. Ad esempio in questi giorni di fine luglio, stiamo lavorando per l’allestimento di un matrimonio qui a New York e intorno a me ci sono tantissimi fiori spontanei dove prendere ispirazione, come le carote selvatiche ”Daucus carota” e gli Eupatorium purpureum; questi saranno i protagonisti dei nostri centrotavola. Così come l’uva, che non è ancora arrivata alla maturazione, con i suoi chicci ancora verdi, sarà perfetta per abbellire la struttura ad arco del matrimonio, e non da ultimo speriamo di convincere il contadino per avere a disposizione il bellissimo Ribes rubrum ‘Champagne Pink’, il frutto dal colore più bello che ci sia, senza dubbio.
How does your collaboration start? We met about 6 years ago on a blind date. At that time there were not a lot of people making natural looking florals in Brooklyn and when we found each other’s work we knew it would be better to share and collaborate than compete and rival. Our first meeting we talking for hours about astrology and Stevie Nicks and our boyfriends; we didn’t even make it to flower talk. We are really close friends now who also happen to share the same career. It’s pretty special, I feel very lucky. What are the reciprocal influences you are sharing? Nicolette and I both take heavy cues from nature and garden design. We both start planning flowers for an event by looking at what is
happening outside at the time and place of the party. For example right now it’s mid July and I am working on a wedding in upstate NY …there are lots of wildflowers like Daucus carota (Queen Anne’s lace) and Eutrochium purpureum (Joe-Pye weeds) everywhere, so we will work those into our centerpieces. Wild grapevine is rampant here and looks so gorgeous when the berries are still a bit immature; that dusty green. Those will make an appearance on the wedding arch. If I can convince the farmer, I hope to get my hands on a lot of Ribes rubrum ‘Champagne Pink’ the most beautiful fruit in the world. Arguably. Which is the reason for you to take inspiration from the painting of Dutch masters ?
