Airport expansion takes off A S A I R P O R T S G R O W S U P P O R T I N G I N F R A S T R U C T U R E S W I L L H AV E T O A D A P T Glasgow has revealed ambitious plans for a £25 million extension to the main terminal, due to start next spring. The Glasgow Airport Master Plan, launched by airport Managing Director Alan Barr, sets out BAA Glasgow`s long term vision for the airport over the next quarter century. The blueprint is the culmination of over 12 months of detailed discussions with local and national government, local residents, the business community and the tourism industry, on the future development of Glasgow Airport.

ith the increasing numbers of air travellers the government is driving the expansion of UK airports to ensure they can cope with the pressure. Along with other groups, the government have made a strong case for increased revenue and have pointed out that more air passengers is good for the economy and will generate revenue for businesses through tourism. Glasgow expansion In October 2006 a £290 million boost for Scotland`s busiest international airport was announced as BAA published its 25 year blueprint for the future of Glasgow Airport. Initially, BAA

UK airports at near full capacity UK airports are capacity constrained with no spare slots at Heathrow or Stansted at peak times. 3% growth each year is manageable, but actual growth is expected to be 3.9%. At the moment BAA is working to get the maximum possible use out of its airports. However, it is generally agreed that expansion cannot come at any cost, particularly where the environment is concerned. Airport growth will have to be implemented on a sustainable basis, with approval from the relevant bodies. Airport expansion will have a big impact on companies who support airport infrastructures as new runways and terminals are built. For example suppliers to airlines and other airport functions who have been embedded into UK airports over many years will have to be ready to deal with their own structural changes.  YOUR ASSET QUESTIONS ANSWERED A customer recently asked for guidance on the suitability of a pump and motor set installation within their site. They needed to know where to go for detailed guidance as well as the relevant parameters when classifying the hazardous area? The system in question was for processing liquid in a hazardous environment.

ASS e ts

Research into IP15 (3rd Edition) revealed that the existence of a Zone 1 or 2 depends on the type of pump shaft seal, the category of the fluid being handled, the process and the environmental conditions. In this situation a zone 2 was suitable. IP15 (IP Area classification code for installations handling flammable fluids: Model code of safe practice in the petroleum industry Part 15, ISBN 978 0 85293 418 1) is a well-established, internationally accepted publication that sets out a methodology for hazardous area classification of installations handling flammable fluids. It includes a demonstrable methodology for specifying hazard radii and is applicable to installations in production, processing, distribution and retail sectors. It should be applied by safety practitioners involved in hazardous area classification. It gives guidance on the classification of regions around equipment handling or storing flammable fluids, and provides a basis for both the correct selection of electrical equipment and the location of other sources of ignition in those areas. MSP WENDY ALEXANDER HAILS EPM AS A LOCAL SUCCESS STORY

M

SP Wendy Alexander recently visited the EPM offices to congratulate the team on its recent successes as well as taking the opportunity to present its ISO 9001:2000 award for quality management. Commenting on the visit Wendy Alexander said, “I was delighted to present EPM Solutions with this award. The company is a local success story and this accolade is testimony to the efforts of its hard working staff. I am sure that this award will inspire the company to greater success and encourage other local businesses to emulate EPM’s achievements.” EPM are grateful to everyone who has helped get them to this stage. In particular, the ISO 9001:2000 award comes partly as the result of support given in consultancy and training from Renfrewshire Council. EPM is recognised as a growth company by Scottish Enterprise who have provided support to the company over the last 12 months.

0,000 runners lined up for the world’s biggest half-marathon, the 26th BUPA Great North Run on 1st October 2006. One of the runners was EPM’s Managing Director, Gary Kerr. This was the first long distance run Gary has been involved in, so it was a big test in terms of getting fit and finishing on the day. However, he did it on what was a very hot day in 2 hours and 28 minutes. Gary also managed to raise over £1,300 for The Parkinsons Disease Society. Gary said, “I had no idea what effect the disease would have on my family until my Mother was diagnosed a few years ago. My Dad now cares for her full time. I am certainly delighted with the support people have given me and would like to take this opportunity to thank them.” Gary now has the running bug and is keen to make sure he maintains this level of fitness.
