A broken heart One of the Tour’s first – but certainly not the last – tragic figures, René Pottier won the 1906 Tour, which included the mountains of the Massif Central. But his heartbreak over an ended love affair led 27-year old Pottier to hang himself just six months after his success. When he was found his medals and trophies were neatly arranged at his feet.
