Bicentennial Tree Planting A series of Bicentennial bond projects to invest in the future of the City of Bloomington was approved in 2018. The identification of planting sites in public rights of ways, and the purchase of trees for planting, is one of the funded projects. Tree planting began in spring 2022 in 274 different sites in four project areas in the city. All trees, and post-planting tree care, are provided by the city; there is no cost to adjoining landowners for tree planting or scheduled tree maintenance. Tree planting will continue through the fall. For more information about the Bicentennial Tree Planting project, visit bloomington.in.gov/treecare or call 812-349-3716.

Griffy Lake Accessible Fishing Pier and Loop Trail The first phase of a 6+ mile loop trail around Griffy Lake began in November 2021 with the Griffy Lake Loop Trail and Accessible Fishing Pier project. Funded by Parks General Obligation Bonds and Bicentennial Bonds, the first phase of the trail project includes a paved, accessible walkway on the west side of Headley Road on the Griffy Lake causeway. The walkway allows hikers and pedestrians safe access to the fishing areas, and to the trails on both the north and south sides of Griffy Lake. The walkway is a key connection for the loop trail, and includes a new stairway on the steep slope next to the causeway bridge on the south side of the lake. Fishing piers are a “bumpout” design that extend into the lake. Concrete blocks stabilize the lake shore and provide a foundation for the walkway and fishing piers. Visitors to Griffy Lake are encouraged to be both cautious and patient during the ongoing construction. Vehicle traffic on Headley Road is temporarily restricted to one way going north until the construction project’s scheduled completion in July 2022. Vehicle parking is not permitted along the causeway or along Headley Road. If the parking lot at the Griffy Lake boathouse is full, please visit at another time. Additional parking and access to the Griffy Lake trail system is located at the Griffy Lake dam off Dunn Street at Old State Road 37 North. Parks and Recreation continues to plan for the design and future construction of additional phases of the Griffy Lake Loop Trail.

Pavilion—11,000 sq. ft., available for rental 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Open 5 a.m.–11 p.m. daily Switchyard Park is a 65-acre park located on the city’s south side. The park is a culmination of decades of planning, as both city leaders and residents saw the potential of an abandoned railroad switchyard to become a destination park for people of all ages and abilities. Completed in November 2019, Switchyard Park at the onset required substantial remediation of coal ash and cinders, the result of the property’s historic use as a railroad switchyard. Bloomington citizens had unprecedented input into the creation of the park, and into the selection of park amenities. The park straddles the city’s B-Line Trail, a 3.1-mile former railroad corridor that provides an avenue for transportation to and from the park and surrounding neighborhoods, and for economic development in the form of restaurants, housing, art galleries, and other businesses.

Amenities include:

• basketball court • 4 pickleball courts • 3 bocce ball courts • skate park • fitness stations • community gardens with 39 raised beds • open greenspace • stream and wetland • performance stage with lawn seating for 5,000 • Pavilion indoor event space • picnic shelter • shaded bosque seating • bicycle/skateboard repair station • Community Foundation Switchyard Plaza Spray Pad • 4.7-acre dog park with fenced areas for large and small dogs • paved, accessible trails around and through the park • 3.1-mile paved, accessible B-Line Trail through the park • vehicle parking lots at Rogers Street, Grimes Lane, and Walnut Street offer a total of 400+ spaces

Public Restrooms • Community Foundation Switchyard Plaza Spray Pad restrooms open seasonally, April-October. • Bloomington Police Department at Grimes Lane public restrooms open year ‘round, from 7:30 a.m.–10 p.m. weekdays and from 6 a.m.–10 p.m. on weekends.

Youth in grades 5–7 want a different kind of camp experience, and they get it in Kid City Quest! Quest campers are actively engaged in activities separate from younger Kid City Original campers. Space is dedicated to Questers where they can hang out with their friends and be themselves. Camp offers a break from technology, replacing it with participation in the community. Kid City Quest also keeps campers involved in traditional camp favorites such as swimming, crafts, library time, games and field trips! Staff-to-camper ratio is 1:10.

Is my child ready for camp? In order to support the success and safety of all individuals registered and participating in Kid City summer camps, it is important that participants are indeed “camp ready.” To assist in determining if your child is “camp ready,” the following criteria have been developed: • Participant is able to participate in the camp program independently or with reasonable accommodations. • Participant is age appropriate (ages 5–12 yrs.) Participants may be aged up or down one grade level with director approval. • Participant is able to use the restroom independently or with minimal verbal prompting.

Youth—Kid City Summer Camps

Campers explore the world around them with field trips and special events. Daily ORIGINAL programs give campers the chance to try specialized activities in the areas of nature and the outdoors, sports and games, and arts and media. We give every child a summer to remember. Staff-tocamper ratio is 1:6 for grade K. Staff-to-camper ratio is 1:8 for grades 1–4.*

• Participant is comfortable with, and able to interact in, a group environment. • Participant interacts and participates in camp in a manner that is physically and emotionally safe for themselves and others. Our camps are inclusive, serving children with and without disabilities. Inclusion services are available for accommodation needs and support options for your child. Reasonable accommodation requests and registration must be made at least two weeks prior to the registration deadline. For more information, contact the Inclusive Recreation Coordinator, Amy Shrake, Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, at 349-3747 or shrakea@bloomington.in.gov.

All Kid City Original and Quest programs are proud to be accredited by the American Camp Association. This nationally recognized accreditation focuses on program quality, health and safety issues, and requires us to review every facet of our operation. Kid City has voluntarily submitted to this independent appraisal done by camp experts and has earned this mark of distinction.

bloomington.in.gov/parks

Our camp staff are enthusiastic, well-trained adults. All staff are CPR and First Aid certified and adhere to the highest professional standards set forth by the American Camp Association and the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department.

Parents are responsible for transporting their child/ren to and from camp each day. Once at camp, city buses and passenger vans are used to transport campers to and from field trips that are not within walking distance. Only trained, licensed drivers transport campers. Please bring: a sack lunch and water bottle, a swimsuit and towel, and any special sunscreen, bug spray or medications.

*Denotes maximum staff-to-camper ratio in accordance with the American Camp Association National Standards.
