Island How To Satisfy Hungry Appetites On and On The Way To and From Block Island
WARNING: This guide could be hazardous to your waistline.
O
r not so much. Because Block Island has, in culinary terms, grown up — and that means it’s up to diners whether to splurge on something rich and decadent or go light and healthy when eating out. Part of the change during the last few decades has been an ever-expanding repertoire of global influences on the island dining scene. No longer are restaurant-goers restricted to the traditional Yankee idea of a gourmet meal — not that there’s anything wrong with boiled corn and lobster or scallops broiled with breadcrumbs, of course, and don’t worry, you can still find them here. But perhaps you’d like to try that lobster in a breakfast omelette, over lightly dressed local greens at lunch, or in wontons with Ahi tuna for dinner. Don’t like seafood? If you feel like tucking in to some real barbecue at an outdoor picnic table, that’s no problem, either. Pancakes, crab cakes benedict, fresh-squeezed carrot juice, homemade doughnuts, sandwiches, falafel, pizza, antipasto, raw bar, sushi, Pad Thai, fried chicken, mussels Provencale, fish and chips, Kobe steak, fish tacos, bouillabaisse, fresh seafood, seafood, seafood… it is all here, awaiting your order. The island now has more than 30 eating establishments, which run the gamut from casual take-out to fine dining. We also have ever-easier access to restaurants on the mainland, whether we’ve gone over to “America” for errands, are on the way to or from the island, or have simply stayed put on the Block and feel like having take-out flown over. Try it, it’s surprisingly easy and fast. And for mainland dwellers around New London, Block Island dining is now easily within reach, thanks to a special ride and dine offer from Block Island Express that will whisk you on the fast ferry to Old Harbor, give you plenty of time to wander, hit the beach and enjoy a leisurely meal, then take you home on the late ferry. With all these wonderful choices, it’s high time the island had a dining guide, so here it is. Hooray for Block Island’s restaurants, and hooray for all the fine chefs who toil away in hot kitchens so that we can relax with friends on long summer evenings. From our forks to yours, here’s a celebration of all that makes Block Island a great place to eat.

Block Dining 2009
Welcome to Block Island By Mike and Becky Ballard
W
e love to cook, and our Block Island Times column, “Everything but the Kitchen Sink,” is all about gathering up friends and family and, with as little fuss as possible, enjoying a meal that will make any occasion a celebration. But everyone likes to get out of the kitchen now and then, and when we were asked to take a look at the dining choices both on and, in some cases, off Block Island, it was a great reason to explore the wealth of dining choices available this year. Whether you want a quiet weekday lunch with a friend, a dressed-up weekend dinner for 20, or an after-the-beach, take-home dinner for your family, take a look at the menus gathered in this guide. They offer a delicious selection of meals in surroundings that range from casual to elegant. For folks who are visiting the island for the first time, we envy you. You have many gustatory delights ahead of you. For people who know this island well, there are still fresh treats to enjoy. There is a new burst of energy and ideas among the local restaurants each summer season. As Dan Puglia, head chef at the Atlantic Inn, says, “Winter is the reset button. It gives us the time to travel, to plan and seek out new ideas.”
What’s New? In our conversations with owner and managers of the local restaurants, we find that structural renovations, staff changes and menu updates are a part of the start-up process every year. Some of these changes are more evident to the average diner than others. Possibly the most noticeable change among many restaurants island-wide is that the menus have been revamped to offer more reasonably priced items. For instance, Sharkey’s offers the same good food and drinks in its friendly, comfortable setting, while at the same time keeping an eye on affordability. The Mohegan Café, the Beachead, Aldo’s Restaurant and many other favorites reflect an awareness of the current economic crunch. If you haven’t seen the new Bethany’s Airport Diner in the www.blockislandtimes.com
new airport building, get ready for a nice surprise. It has all the trappings of the old diner, but with more tables in its fresh new surroundings. The locals were well-fed with Bethany’s good food for breakfast and lunch all winter; now for the summer months she will be open for dinner until 8 p.m. every evening. Ask about her beer and wine selections. Stop by the Harborside Inn on Water Street to see their extensive interior renovations. Their restaurant, the Harbor Grill, now has a more intimate, cozier feel. The new bar is situated to look out over the Old Harbor, and new seating includes booths that are elevated to capture the view. Speaking of view, you can watch spectacular sunsets over the Great Salt Pond from Payne’s Harbor View Inn on Beach Avenue. This year owner Carol Payne is offering “Sushi at Sunset,” but also included are tapas, salads and desserts, along with fine wines and beers (most days from 4 to 10 p.m.). The old Pizza Plus is now Papa’s Pizza, owned and operated by legendary local pizza makers, the Papa’s. Located at the very beginning of Corn Neck Road, Papa’s Pizza is convenient for picking up a picnic lunch on the way to the beach or a stop for dinner on your way home. In addition to pizza, their menu offers subs, wraps and salads (the Greek or the South Beach Salad are specialties).
Where can we go to find good seafood? The staff at the Chamber of Commerce, who can answer any question from visitors fresh off the boat, agrees that one of the questions they hear the most is, “Where can we find good seafood?” Well, we are on an island in the middle of prime Northeast fishing grounds, and here seafood comes prepared every way you can imagine. From simple to sophisticated, almost every one of our restaurants has one or more seafood selections, while some put their main focus on goodies from the sea. Foremost among the latter is the venerable Finn’s Seafood 3
Restaurant located just across the ferry landing in the Old Harbor. Finn’s has a wide range of seafood items, including traditional shore dinners. Here you will find an ample selection from the raw bar and no-fuss seafood dishes that can be prepared broiled, baked or fried. Both indoor and outdoor seating is available, or order from the separate take-out window to get your meal packed up to go. Nearby at popular beach resort, Ballard’s Inn, manager Steve Filippi says the inn serves “hundreds of lobster dinners a day – even thousands on the weekends” in their expansive dining area, which includes a large indoor area, a beachside patio and wait service on the beach itself. You can sit on the porch of the National Hotel and order its lobster bake, freshly prepared swordfish or tuna, or enjoy the raw bar with your favorite drink. It’s one of the best places to have lunch and watch the Fourth of July parade go by. At family-friendly Rebecca’s, which is primarily counter service or take-out, the favorites are the chowder, clam cakes, tuna
sandwiches and lobster rolls, but there are many other non-seafood items as well. Down the street, the Harbor Grill in the Harborside Inn offers lobster and clam cakes for both lunch and dinner. The bucket of shrimp and the fish burritos are very popular up on the deck of The Oar, where you have a grandstand view of the action in the New Harbor. Sharkey’s and the Beachead are only a few steps from Crescent Beach, the most popular site for swimming. Both have daily seafood specials in a casual family atmosphere that’s also perfect for a relaxed night out with friends. Aldo’s Restaurant celebrates the family’s Italian heritage, offering all the classic Italian dishes in a menu spiked with Block Island favorites such as seafood pesto over pasta and soupa de pesche. The Narragansett Inn, housed in a classic landmark building overlooking the New Harbor, features twin lobsters on its dinner menu. The chef ’s specials always present fish served in some enticing new way. Ask about the fresh Italian Bindi sorbets as the perfect finale.
Enjoy a quietly delicious end to your Block Island evening. There’s a special place at the Hotel Manisses. It’s called the Upstairs Parlor. That’s where we prepare a wide variety of delicious flaming coffees right at your table, and serve up our outrageously seductive Manisses’ desserts. The Upstairs Parlor is the perfect place to quietly enjoy the perfect end of your Block Island evening.

Eli’s Restaurant has maintained its reputation for a style that is eclectic and seasonal in a cozy bistro setting. Chef Melissa Puglia oversees a creative dinner menu that includes seafood selections as well as other items that go beyond the traditional. C.J. Correnti, the chef at the Spring House, prepares a large baked, stuffed lobster that has been a popular choice on the Victorian hotel’s fine menu for years. The Hotel Manisses’ chef Ross Audino, always has fresh local seafood on the menu. The delectable choices include the now-famous spinach crusted codfish. Dan Puglia returns for his third year as head chef for the Atlantic Inn. Dan serves “whatever is fresh” and seeks out local fishermen for shellfish, lobsters, steamers and oysters.

Where can we go for Fine Dining? If you are in search of a more elegant, “white tablecloth sort of evening” with fine dining as your goal, there are a number of choices on Block Island. Starting on the east side of the island, the high-ceilinged rooms of the Spring House create an elegant but relaxed dining room atmosphere and the perfect wrap-around porch is a lovely setting for a summertime lunch. The Gazebo Room of the Hotel Manisses puts a global accent on native New England ingredients. Sublimely creaky and cupola-ed, the Manisses offers a carefully selected menu of flavorful dishes. Every bit the classic country inn, the Atlantic Inn’s beautifully plated dinners range from succulent grilled meats to light, savory seafoods. Softly lit with candlelight and dressed-up in crisp, white table-
5
cloths, Winfield’s cozy, unpretentious setting has earned a loyal following.
What about a friendly pub? You might want to consider some of Block Island’s friendly pubs, destinations in their own right, if you’re in the mood for something a little more casual and affordable. Some are tucked away, others have broad island views, but it’s for certain that you’ll find distinct warmth and conviviality in all of them. Located right in the center of Water Street, the main street, the Mohegan Café not only has pub food and more choices from its restaurant menu, but its own home-brewed beer. The tavern of the Beachead Restaurant looks out over Crescent Beach with its spectacular ocean views. Sharkey’s is folded into all the activity of the town and with easy parking, too. Both the Harborside and the National offer drinks and pub food on their expansive porches overlooking the Old Harbor where you can sit and watch the day or night go by. Almost at the top of Connecticut Avenue in the ground floor
of the old Highview Hotel, Club Soda will serve food until 11 p.m. this summer. It’s open year-round and is one of the favorite spots for locals. The Oar sits up over the boating scene of the Block Island Boat Basin in the New Harbor and offers the option of both indoor and outdoor service. Victoria’s Parlor in the Spring House is a full-service tavern with martini soirees every Thursday evening. At the Atlantic Inn you can relax in an Adirondack chair on the lawn with a cold drink and enjoy the inn’s inventive selections of tapas. Guests can lounge on the lower terrace of the Hotel Manisses and enjoy a romantic summer evening complete with lush gardens and a bubbling fountain before having dinner inside in the Gazebo Room. And don’t forget Finn’s cozy bar.
What are the best places for children? If you’re looking for “kid-friendly” options, try Aldo’s, Mohegan Café, the Harborview Restaurant (at Champlin’s Marina) or Finn’s children’s menus. The National Hotel gives out tokens to it’s game room and Ballard’s Inn has a toy chest and a video arcade, not to mention plenty of sand where the kids can blow off steam. Chil-

dren will love to watch the airplanes land from the patio at Bethany’s Airport Diner while they munch on a hot dog or hamburger, or they can drop a line at the dock at Payne’s in the New Harbor. New last year was Beckett’s Authentic Gelato, located in the ground floor of the National Hotel. Beckett’s offers 25 flavors (cappuccino chip, pistachio, and coconut are favorites) made locally with all fresh ingredients. Just across Dodge Street, Juice ‘n Java is a great stop for Hawaiian shaved ices. They come in all flavors, too. Tiger’s Blood and Piña Colada made with tropical juices are quite popular. Rebecca’s menu has all the kids’ favorites — grilled cheese sandwiches, hot dogs, chicken fingers and hamburgers, and ice cream. It other site, Rebecca’s On The Beach, located in the town beach pavillion, is one of the few places where you can find soft

ice cream and Harry’s offer casual outdoor dining on shady picnic tables. Look for H.J. Willy’s concession for hot dogs and more in the parking lot at the Settler’s Rock (at the end of Corn Neck Road). Kids can sit near the ocean with their picnic lunch before they hike out to survey the old light and the very tip of Block Island. Aldo’s Bakery serves Homemade ice cream, 32 flavors, and it has just added 12 new flavors of gelato. It will cater birthday parties for any age group. The island has its own Ben & Jerry’s right on Water Street with all of the popular flavors. And, finally, everything about Froozie’s is a child’s treat, from its location next to the National Hotel’s game room to the homemade cookies. Parents who look for healthy and organic choices will be happy to find the wide selection of sandwiches and fruit smoothies, along with fresh-squeezed juice and fair-trade coffees. Other options for families include The Oar, Sharkey’s, Beachead, Narragansett and Water Street Café.
7
... there’s even more? The Water Street Café overlooks the Old Harbor and has the out-of-doors atmosphere of a summer picnic — without all the work. You’ll find all the favorites: wraps, burgers, and chowder, and they will even prepare “lobster bakes to go” that can be picked up just before you jump on the ferry back to Pt. Judith. Just before you get to Crescent Beach look for McGovern’s Yellow Kittens and its Mexican-on-the-Deck up under the awning. Kelly Robertson serves up her savory south-of-the-border menu along with lots of choices of drinks, from cold beers to mudslides and margaritas.
Who Serves Breakfast? A number of restaurants have breakfast items on the menu, which range from a quick bite to a full meal to linger over with the morning paper. You can find the earliest breakfast at Bethany’s Airport Diner, which opens daily year-round at 6 am. Look for the blackboard specials, especially the Crab Benny, an English muffin topped with a crab cake, poached eggs and creamy Hollandaise.
8
Juice ‘n Java is the internet café with a new look. Pleasantly quirky, Juice ‘n Java has more than a dozen Fair Trade organic coffees and bagels flown in fresh from New York City. Among a number of selections, ask about the Big Egg Sandwich (and the Pot Roast Sandwich for lunch). Rebecca’s, the National Hotel and the Harbor Grill in the Harborside Inn are all open for breakfast this year. You can dine outside and watch the town wake up over Old Harbor. Aldo’s Bakery has special coffees and a wide selection of locally baked goods. Froozie’s has grilled breakfast burritos made with fresh ingredients. The 1661 Inn puts out a lavish champagne breakfast with a smashing view to boot. The doughnuts and coffee at Payne’s Dock have been around for so long they’ve become part of island legends. You’ll hear, “It was my first job,” or, “We met there.” Stop by and create your own stories.
What About Take-out and Catering? When you are torn between spending time at the beach and
Block Dining 2009
serving meals for family and guests, our advice is to relax, linger by the water, and explore all the take-home choices available on the island. Almost everything on the menus at Aldo’s Restaurant, Ballard’s, Finn’s, Froozies, Harry’s, the National, The Oar, Rebecca’s, and Sharkey’s can be made to go. And don’t forget the new Papa’s Pizza; call ahead and pick up your order on your way to or from the beach. If you have a special event coming up, remember that most of the restaurants will cater private parties on-site or at the location of your choosing. For a truly romantic option, Hotel Manisses will cater a formal sunset dinner for two people on the beach. They will also accommodate larger groups for any special occasion at locations around the island or on their various properties. The Atlantic Inn hosts private functions from a minimum of 15 up to a maximum of 250 people; the National Hotel has a separate dining room for private functions of up to 50 people. The Spring House can entertain private groups in different spaces on its porches, decks and lawns. Many of the restaurants and Froozie’s will put together party platters upon request.

Is it possible to come over to Block Island just for dinner? Yes! A fun idea that gives people in mainland Connecticut a quick taste of the island is the weekend schedule on the Block Island Express. With the addition of more trips, the schedule makes it possible for folks to come to the island in the afternoon with a little time to shop or swim, have an early dinner at an island restaurant, and return to New London at 7:50 p.m. This schedule runs on Fridays and Sundays in July and through to the third week in August.
Any suggestions of where to stop while I’m “in America”? Island dwellers on a trip to the mainland, and people passing through southern Rhode Island on their way to Block Island, may not be familiar with restaurants or places to stay in South County. There are a number of establishments that know the island well and understand the restraints of ferry schedules. If you find yourself in Westerly, R.I., try the Cooked Goose.
9
It has the comfort and warmth of a New England country store, but its food is stylish and new. Drive south beyond the entrance to the Westerly Airport and turn left on Watch Hill Road. The Cooked Goose will be on the left across the street from Gray’s Marina and the Pawcatuck River. Co-owner Jennifer Gibson (with her husband Andrew Nathan) knows Block Island firsthand because she worked at the Hotel Manisses a few years ago. She and her staff prepare deli sandwiches, salads, soups, quiches and desserts which can be served tableside up to 3 p.m. and ordered from the counter until 7 p.m every day of the week. In Wakefield you’ll find the unique Go Pasta featuring gourmet Italian food-to-go. As the name implies, it’s all “to go.” Look for it just east of the busy intersection of Rt. 108 and Old Tower Hill Road. The choices are everything from fresh pasta dishes to breads, meatballs, cheeses, sauces (pesto, alfredo, marinara), sausages and desserts. New in Wakefield is the hospitable Midtown Café located further down at 333 Main St. under the black–and–white awning. The Midtown’s white tablecloths and airy space create the feel of a European bistro. It has been open for breakfast and lunch since December, and will also be serving dinner on Friday and Saturday nights in the summer. Bangers and Mash, along with Fish Pie, reflect the owner’s Irish origins, and are listed on the menu with more traditional sandwiches and salads. Calvitto’s Pizza and Bakery has two locations for your convenience. The original restaurant is on Pt. Judith Road in Narragansett; the newer one is in the South County Commons off of Rt. 1. They get rave reviews for all of their Italian foods and fast, friendly service. Another hit is their chocolate éclairs, “the best ever!” If you need to stay overnight, the Shelter Harbor Inn is a sure bet. Located east of Westerly on Rt. 1, about four miles from the intersection of Rt. 78, the Shelter Harbor Inn began as a comfortable, unpretentious farmhouse in 1810. It now contains 26 rooms, its own dining room serving three meals a day, hot tubs, and paddle tennis courts, all set among lawns and gardens. Pets are now welcome in some of the rooms. If you stay there remember to ask about the special Block Island off-season rate for a room and breakfast. Our best wishes for a very happy and delicious summer!

The only thing better than the view at the 1661 Inn is our breakfast. Our New England Champagne Breakfast Buffet features: • Omelet Station • Homemade Corned Beef Hash • Muffins & Pastries • Fresh Fruit • Baked Bluefish • And, of course, champagne!

Menu’s from the Past Robert M. Downie 1. The cover and food choices from Dead Eye Dick’s menu of the early 1970’s. An additional page offered 85 different scotches, whiskies, brandys, etc. Dead Eye’s and its adjacent competitor Smuggler’s Cove were “the places to go” on the island back then. 2. The National Hotel Menu, August 20, 1911. From “Florida” and “California” to the National Hotel 3. The Spring House menu of 1880, although appearing sparse, would surpass any dozenpage menu of today; if not for its selection, then certainly for the exceptional freshness of the meats, vegetables, and fish, nearly always from Block Island farms or fishing boats.
