Theatre debate How will funding affect ratepayers? By Damian George and Les Whiteside Marlborough District councillor Geoff Evans says claims by Civic Theatre Trust chairman Kevin Moseley that fundraising goals for the new theatre have been met are untrue. Councillor Evans says the council is still deciding how best to fund the new theatre, which is scheduled for completion in mid-2012. “The council have yet to make a decision on this,” he says. “It won’t be discussed until probably February at the earliest to see how funding will be achieved, so it’s quite a way away. “There’s got to be a lot more work done first.” The Theatre Trust has already raised more than $3 million and could be on target to achieve $4 million soon.

The estimated cost for the new theatre building is $17 million, with $4 million coming from the trust and $5 million coming from a capital grant from the Marlborough District Council reserves fund. The Sun understands the council is also proposing to buy the old theatre building from the Civic Trust for a cost of $6 million to house a new public library. If this happens, the old theatre building will need to be upgraded at an estimated cost of between $5 and $10 million. With the new theatre up and running (on the Clubs of Marlborough site) the council will also need to pick up the annual operating costs, projected at $200,000 to $400,000 a year. The Sun has been told some newly-appointed

councillors are unhappy about the lack of consultation with the public on the proposals, and have asked mayor Alistair Sowman to issue a press release to update locals. Councillor Jamie Arbuckle says the public should be made aware of the issues surrounding the theatre project and the costs associated, as well as any other options the council is considering. “If the rate-payers want a new theatre, that’s fine. But let’s tell them what the costs are.” He also told The Sun he is not in favour of the theatre being built next to the Clubs of Marlborough, and that the club itself voted 197 to six against the site. “I believe it will cause havoc and isn’t supported by a large number of the public,” he says.

Don Grady was sacked by his first newspaper boss, who told him he was too polite to be a journalist. Otago Daily Times editor John Moffat told him he would be more suited to be an accountant or lawyer. But Don was a writer at heart, so at eighteen he caught a ship and set sail to see the world. It took him to Britain via a brief stint in the US airforce in Panama, to newspapers in Canada, Australia and back to New Zealand. After a short stint in Wellington he scored a job on regional radio, Radio 3GI at Sale in Victoria Australia. He also covered the entire Northern Territory for the Australian Broadcasting Commission. Sir Frank Packer’s media empire, however, was Don’s greatest training ground. Don joined the Sydney’s Daily Telegraph at age 24 and then onto the Sunday Telegraph. Don’s nickname changed from “Spike, to “Scoop after he beat 50 other Sydney journalists to a story about why the bodies of four Chinese sewn into mattresses came to be floating in Sydney’s Darling Harbour. They all wrote it up as a murder but Grady headed down to the harbour to find out more. He made a beeline for the ship Taiwan, buying a dozen bottles of beer on the way. Grady gave one bottle to the night

watchman whom he questioned about who on board might be worth talking to. “I went up to the ship’s Chinesespeaking English ref r igerat ion engineer’s cabin with the other 11 bottles of beer.

Top left, a young Don Grady and above with his trademark Akubra hat and warm welcome.

Don had the whole story for the next morning’s newspaper. The Chinese were being smuggled into the country as cheap labour to work in selected Sydney nightclubs. During the passage they were stowed away in sealed steel compartments. “It got too hot. They basically ran out of air. They suffocated to death. “I got the whole story from the engineer. said Don. Don got excited when talking about a story, especially people stories.

His verbal delivery was often filled with passion and colour, and at top speed. The Akubra hat and warm welcome were his trademarks during his writing career. Don and his wife Marilyn retired to Marlborough in 1992 when he began writing books on a variety of subjects, many focused on Marlborough, the Grady’s People collection, which came about from his regular Nelson Mail newspaper columns and the whaling families the Guards and Perano’s. Don’s twelfth book about the Edwin Fox is currently with his publisher Derek Shaw. He once told The Sun, “I feel I have an obligation to the Marlborough reading public to continue to get hold of these incredible characters while it is still possible and they are still around to be interviewed.

His nose for locating characters is almost legendary on both sides of the Tasman. He would tell a budding journalist “Never give up on a story. Back your own judgement and never give up. He also wrote for the Sunday Times under the pseudonyms Sam Pentecost and Rex Pointer. Don said, to be a good reporter,“You must like people. If you don’t like people you’re in the wrong game. And curiosity. Don confessed to being quite curious as a child, always inquisitive. Always a writer! Born a journalist! Don spent Christmas Day with his loving wife and family and celebrated his wedding anniversary in late December also. He was sixteen days short of his 82nd birthday when he passed away on Sunday 9th January 2011.

Fresh food store opens

:(=05.: /LWWOH 3HQJXLQ 5DQJH

By Damian George Marlburians will no longer have to go to the supermarket to get their hands on fresh food, following the opening of a “seasonal produce store on Grove Road yesterday. The store, which is a joint venture of Nelson companies Benge & Co Green Grocers and Guyton’s Fresh Seafood, is the only independent fresh food retailer in the region. Guytons general manager Andy Leonard says the companies decided to bring their businesses to Blenheim after noticing a gap

in the fresh food market. “There’s a demand in Blenheim for quality fresh food and currently there’s no independent fish retailer or fruit and vege retailer, he says. “Our stores in Nelson have been very successful - customers love our shop and are very loyal, and we’d love to get to that stage here in Blenheim. According to one customer who visited yesterday, the store is already well on its way to achieving that goal, and described it as “a breath of fresh air. “It’s clean, welcoming, has cour-

teous staff, and it’s refreshing to see a beautifully set out range. “There’s a nice variety, good quality and affordable prices – they will do well here. The store will stock a range of fresh and frozen fish, as well as shellfish, smoked fish and seasonal products such as whitebait and mutton birds. It will also stock produce from several Marlborough growers and suppliers including Uncle Joe’s Walnuts and Hazelnuts, Annie’s Marlborough Ltd, Thymebank Ltd and Hedgerows Hydroponic.

By Celeste Lodewyk Six-day-old baby girl Madeline Grace Ransfield was the first baby to be born in Wairau Hospital’s first ever birthing pool. Her mother Toni received a gift basket last Friday from Marlborough Independent Midwife Sue Hudson to mark the occasion. Sue said the birthing pool was the first in the hospital’s history and was installed in the

new maternity ward following requests from staff and expectant mothers. “Staff wanted to have the availability of a birthing pool. It provides a relaxing and calming experience for women in labour and enables mothers to be more in control, she said. According to Toni her water birth was an “empowering experience made even more special by her catching Madeline as she was born.

“It really felt good to be in control with less intervention and the water helped me to relax and took some of the weight and pressure off me during labour, she said. The birthing pool has been available since the opening of the new maternity ward in November 2010. In preparation for its installation, maternity ward staff have undergone specialist training, said Sue.

Happy ending After reading an article in The Sun last week about a young boy who had his bike stolen on New Year’s Eve, Meater’s owner Mike Newman sensed an opportunity to spread some Christmas cheer. Mr Newman got on the phone to Cycleworld - where the bike was purchased from - and, within hours, the two companies had teamed up to give 9-year-old Dylan Hedges a brand new bike.

Mr Newman says Cycleworld co-owner Matt Dunstan had no hesitation when asked if the store wanted to contribute. “It’s a small price to pay to make a little fella happy, Mr Newman says. “The little boy’s over the moon and Matt and I feel really good about it. Dylan’s mum, Nadine Hughes, vows the bike will be safely locked away in his bedroom when he is not using it from now on.

‘Mystery shopper’ scams in Marlborough By Damian George A former IT consultant for the government is warning people to be aware of scam mystery shopper campaigns in Marlborough. Bob Bradley, who has 20 years background in business and information technology, says he noticed an advertisement in The Sun recently which raised his suspicions. The ad offered positions for “secret shoppers, promising healthy wages and convenient working hours, and did not appear to be from a reputable company.

quite suspicious. Bob says there are very easy ways to identify whether an advertisement is a scam or not. “Number one, you need to know the proper ID of the person you’re dealing with - name, address and phone number. “It shouldn’t be yahoo, gmail, hotmail even Facebook can be somewhat anonymous sometimes. He says he has contacted police, but scammers are quite difficult to track down.

“For a start, the email address was very anonymous - it was just a gmail address, he says. “The other thing is that there’s no other ID for these people. Bob, who is now retired, says he decided to reply to the ad, and received a response which again had no proper identification. “They said ‘we will give you $500 per assignment’. “They wanted my bank account details and a lot of other information which I thought was

Letters to the editor

Dear Sir, If last week’s “Proud homophobic is so keen on the definitions in his rather out of date dictionary, perhaps he should look up the word phobia: “An abnormal, intense and irrational fear of a given situation, organism, or object If you are proud to have an “abnormal and irrational fear then I for one feel sorry for you. Paul Towson

Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. Guidelines are that they should be no longer than 150 words. They must be signed and a street address provided to show good faith, even if a nom de plume is provided for publication. The editor reserves the right to abridge

letters or withhold unsuitable letters from publication. Send or fax them to the address on page two, or e mail them to news@blenheimsun.co.nz. Please note that your name and street address must also be provided in e mails.

Dude, where’s my millions?

Competition Winners

Dear Sir, I read with interest Mr Anderson’s comments in today’s Sun. It appears to me, and I’m sure a few others who attended the erection of the notice in the club’s car park re the site of the proposed theatre: I can definitely remember Mr Ander-

son’s address... today’s article has me puzzling - how come the fundraising is no larger? Mr Anderson stated that $5million would be raised by Christmas 2009 and yet by Christmas 2010 only $3million has been promised. What happened to $5million? Answers please. Short Fall

Perhaps...but, alas, maybe not!!

Winner Donna Jones with her son James receives her $1000 Warehouse voucher prize from Blenheim Car Parts owners Geoff and Coral Stewart.

Dear Sir In response to Don Coyote [January 5]: You have my sympathies a little as, obviously, your chain gang of little chimney sweeps may well have been rebelling with all the Christmas spirit that abounds. Hence our miserable attitude!! Perhaps you are unaware you receive postal deliveries 302 days a year currently, perhaps you would like to see Sunday deliveries as well and, while we are there, let’s go to two times a day. Perhaps that will please you but, alas, maybe not!! Perhaps NZ Post are putting people ahead of profit and recognise the need to have the 11 publically-recognised statutory days of leave. Perhaps, dur-

ing your working life [assuming you have had one], you too were seen with your feet up...just perhaps...but, alas, maybe not!! And, finally, perhaps you may recognise your mail deliveries are provided to your gate rain, hail or shine? Or, perish the thought, perhaps you may accept your postie has, in many cases, completed half a days work before you even reach for the milk for your corn flakes in the morning. Perhaps...but, alas, maybe not!! As for the ‘scrooge of the year’ nomination you talk about...perhaps he’s there in the morning. YEP, Definitely!! Pete Walters, Rural Mail contractor, Blenheim.

Coffee hard to swallow

Isaac Donaldson, 5, and Hannah Wadsworth, 12, with their prizes after winning the A Martella colouring competition.

On Wednesday, January 5, we spent the day in Picton with three children. In the morning, my wife purchased a coffee [takeaway, or ‘coffee on the go’] from Seabreeze Cafe and Bar. What a surprise when she was asked for an extra 30 cents for the takeaway paper cup. This appears to us to be a rip-off. Seabreeze, you may sell CPR Coffee - our favourite brand of coffee - but no thanks - we will not be purchasing any more coffee from you.

In the afternoon, it was a much different story when I purchased two coffees from Atawhai Cafe on the Foreshore. The coffees here were placed in a second cup in case the coffee was a little too hot to carry. I can only hope that not too many tourists visiting Picton experienced the same surprise from Seabreeze Cafe. Bruce Wallace

Just average Dear Ed, I think I’m your average 19-year-old. When I get time away from University and working, I spend it with friends or in the outdoors. What makes me different from most people is that I’m gay - well, current research is suggesting differently (10% of the world being most commonly cited). However, predictions are hard to make due to many people never identifying their sexuality and how homosexuality is defined. Anyone with a choice would need their head read to want to get kicked out of home, lose support (financial and emotional) from parents, be left with only my friends and minimal possessions, and then have to watch the love of your life become an aromantic asexual and lose all contact because of overwhelming homophobic behaviour. That’s my story summed up, but it’s got nothing on the increasing number of heart-breaking teen suicide stories due to homophobic bullying. For those homophobes out there, please exhibit your behaviour and feelings to someone who can handle it and not some highly vulnerable teenager - who already has millions of different new chemicals and emotions due to puberty, let alone being complicated by the thought of possibly being homosexual. Everyone is entitled to their views and opinions but sometimes it just takes a little bit of common sense. Regards, Kishan Kirkwood

Crossing cultures Blenheim teacher Andrew Lankshear talks to Damian George about teaching, life in Japan, and being a foreigner. Having packed up his things as a 26year-old to embark on a teaching career on the other side of the world, Blenheim man Andrew Lankshear knows better than most the challenges of assimilating in a new country. Appropriate, then, that the St Mary’s Primary School teacher recently completed his thesis on the topic of cross-cultural transitions as part of his Masters in Education (Guidance Studies), having returned from ten years teaching English in Japan. Not that the initial foray into Japanese life was particularly taxing for Andrew and his fellow Kiwi travellers, fresh out of Teachers College in 1997. “It was great. We went under the JET (Japanese Exchange and Teaching Programme) and they flew us over “People need business class, he recalls. to just be a bit “We spent the first few nights more curious at the Hilton in Tokyo, and and not just did things like play cricket in look at people the halls of the hotel - just being as foreigners lads. “Then all of a sudden we were on a bus, then in a Board of Education office where no one spoke any English. Prompted by his own experiences in the Asian country, Andrew’s thesis centred around a case study of two Canadians who had also been living in Japan. “A lot of literature on the topic had focused on just what people were like once they were in a new country, he says. “I was more interested in their life story of who they were before they came. He says the basis of his study was not on how people can strip their identity back “layer by layer, but rather how people change in relation to other people and cultures.

Having been back in New Zealand with wife Simao for two and a half years, and welcoming their first child Jasmine ten months ago, Andrew says his philosophies could be applied more readily in New Zealand. “People need to just be a bit more curious and not just look at people as foreigners, he says. “It’s about understanding what it’s like for foreigners coming here. It can be difficult in Blenheim, particularly if you come from a non-Christian country. “The traditional way of becoming involved in the community here is things like going to church. If you don’t do that, you can feel out of the community quite a bit. Upon arriving in Japan, Andrew taught at a junior high school in Naganuma - a town near Tokyo of about 5000 people. From there, he taught at an English conversational school in another small town, Shirakawa, where he met Simao, and his last four years were at a private Catholic school at Koriyama. He graduated with first class honours at Massey University in Palmerston North last year. He says, apart from developing and honing some teaching techniques, there is not a lot else from his experience in Japan that he applies at St Mary’s - the school he attended as a child. “It can be a bit of a disadvantage actually because it’s ten years out of the education system. “There are graduates out of Teachers College that know a lot more about it than I do.

SIT Cookery graduate adds “best in NZ to accolades Joseph Clarke has always had a passion for cooking and since graduating from Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) with a Certificate in Hospitality (Cookery) Level 4 in 2006 he has worked at the exclusive Blanket Bay Luxury Lodge in Glenorchy. This August the 22-year-old was named the Restaurant Association of New Zealand’s 2010 NZ Chef of the Year, after three days of intense competition in Auckland. “It was a really special moment - it’s been one of the goals I’ve had ever since I became a chef.

It’s a real testament to the great people behind me at Blanket Bay, and the great foundations that the tutors laid for me while I was studying at SIT. Joseph is no stranger to success. Since he first began competing in 2006 with SIT’s team at the Nestle Toque d’Or national cookery competition, he has been named the NZ Commis Chef of the Year (2007) and has represented NZ in Dubai, Chile and Sydney in the international Young Commis Chefs competition. In February 2010 he was awarded third place at The Hans Bueschkens World

Junior Chefs Challenge in Chile, where he was one of 17 junior chefs from across the globe competing. In July he was named the Southern Lights Salon Culinaire Open Chef of the Region at Cromwell. What’s his winning formula you might ask? He believes it’s all about practice. SIT’s Cookery programme was a combination of theory and practical classes which taught him all the basics for working in a kitchen environment – correct cooking temperatures, methods and hygiene. The two year programme in cookery is

in-depth and taught in modern facilities with top of the range equipment. “What we used in the SIT kitchens is exactly the same as you would use in your workplace, Joseph said. Joseph has worked very hard to achieve all his goals to date and he gives a lot of credit to his tutors at SIT, Tony Goodall and Ray Flutey, who were very

professional and always happy to help. Much praise is also given to the chefs Joseph has trained under at Blanket Bay, Jason Dell and Mark Sycamore, for sharing their expertise with him. Both chefs have previously won the NZ Chef of the Year title. He is looking forward to a bright future in the industry.

Standing ovation for local boys By Celeste Lodewyk The Basis New Zealand Stockcar Championship held at Eastern States Speedway on Friday and Saturday night has been heralded as a resounding success. In the qualifying and non-qualifying events, Eastern States stockcar drivers battled fiercely for their positions in the prestigious national championship, much to the delight of the crowd. Supporters came by the thousands to shout and cheer their support for the 10 local drivers who pitted their cars against 120 of the countries best. Despite the title being won by Wellington driver Kyle Lane (94W), local drivers Tim Alexander (777E) and Scott Alexander (771E) managed to qualify for the finals, only to have their title hopes dashed by injuries. Tim’s car sustained two flat tyres in the first heat. Tim was later injured in the second heat, leaving him out of the championship title final. Scott faired slightly better, finishing fourth place in the first heat and 10th in the second heat. The third and final heat was

beginning to look hopeful for Eastern States with Scott sitting in sixth position on points, but an out-of-the-blue straight-line charge made by Palmerston North’s 557P Darrel Wallace slammed Scott into the wall. The hit left Scott momentarily unconscious and unable to finish the heat. In the Teng Tools non-qualifying races, local driver Ralph Gillespie

Principal sponsor of the event was Renwick business Basis, owned by Anthony and Robyn van de Water. “It was a wonderful feeling to have the Basis name supporting such a renowned event, says Anthony. “The crowd support was overwhelming and it was humbling to witness the standing ovation they gave to our boys.

“This seemed the perfect way to combine our love of cooking and food with a great opportunity to meet new people.

Roving French chefs hit Blenheim By Damian George Two young Parisian chefs serving up a taste of French cooking in people’s very own dining rooms have set up camp in Marlborough. Jeremie Jobard and Sarah Santini have recently spent two months in Hawke’s Bay gracing locals’ kitchens with their traditional and contemporary French dishes, dubbed “French cooking at home. The pair, who have both completed four years of training and worked in some of the most highlyregarded restaurants in Paris, are now commuting between Blenheim and Picton to give Marlburians

a taste of their skills. They have been in New Zealand for four months, having come up with the novel idea in France. “We wanted to work while we travelled but not in restaurants or cafes - this seemed the perfect way to combine our love of cooking and food with a great opportunity to meet new people, Jeremie says. While they specialise in French cooking, their services are not limited to the boundaries of traditional recipes, he says. “We love to cook with the freshest produce and are keen to take a new approach to French cooking,

using traditional practices with New Zealand ingredients. “We are flexible - if people want something special they just have to ask us.

He says one of the biggest challenges is sourcing ingredients in sometimes remote locations in a country far removed from what they are used to.

“The first thing we do when we get to a new town is search the supermarkets for all the fresh produce, he says. Jeremie and Sarah plan

to be in Marlborough for about a month, but their time in the region could be extended depending on the interest shown by locals.
