A Message from the Mayor

On behalf of the City of Vancouver, I want to welcome everyone to the 2011 Eastside Culture Crawl. The Eastside Culture Crawl has become one of Vancouver’s cultural treasures. Now in its 15th year, beginning as a small neighbourhood event, it has developed into an organization that represents the creative spirit of the east end of the city. The neighbourhood is rich with fabulous artists of a multitude of crafts who are eager to share their talents with cultural crawlers. It is the unique character of our city that allows us to be able to appreciate and participate in a celebration of the arts such as the Eastside Culture Crawl. Vancouverites are fortunate to have such a strong and creative arts community. Thanks to all who make it possible and best wishes to the participating artists for another wonderful weekend. Yours truly,

Gregor Robertson, Mayor Vancouver

Title Here from MLA Jenny Kwan A Message

On behalf of the Vancouver-Mount Pleasant community, it is my great pleasure and honour to welcome all art-lovers to the 15th Annual Eastside Culture Crawl. Congratulations on your achievements over the last 15 years. A big thank you and well-wishes to all the staff and volunteers of the Crawl — without you, this event would not be possible. The Culture Crawl is no ordinary arts festival. It is a feast for the eyes, heart, soul and mind. It’s a festival that showcases the creative and generous spirit of artists in our community who open the doors to their own homes and studios to showcase their many talents. It is an incredible network of artists coming together to celebrate each other, show their love and talent and create an economic boost in our neighbourhood. From its beginnings as a benefit fundraiser, the Crawl has grown to include hundreds of artists showing their work to some 10,000 visitors while keeping its place as an event rooted in community. Whether you are looking to purchase a masterpiece, looking for creative inspiration, or are just curious about the many diverse art practices of our neighbours, I am sure that you will find something to spark your imagination. I look forward to seeing you on the Crawl! Sincerely,

Jenny Kwan, MLA Vancouver-Mount Pleasant

The Eastside Culture Crawl Society provides opportunities for member artists to engage with the pubic through the creation of events, programming and partnerships that foster awareness, encourage visibility and promote artists and their work. The Eastside Culture Crawl officially began in 1997 with 45 artists in 3

Strathcona area studio buildings and was attended by a few hundred people. Since that time the event has grown to include over 300 artists, craftspeople and designers attracting an audience of more than 10,000. The organization itself has evolved to represent the heart of the East Van creative community.

CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF CREATIVITY!窶ポ窶テastsideculturecrawl.com

Welcome to the 15th Annual Eastside Culture Crawl

We’ve been “crawling” for 15 years! Over the years, there has been snow, rain, sunshine, lighting storms, you name it. But the passion of the participating artists has been matched by well-wishers and art enthusiasts who grab Lisa Ochowycz their gumboots and Vice-Chair umbrellas and head out for a weekend of art and adventure. Welcome to the event of the year, where you get to glimpse inside the working spaces of one of Canada’s most artistically rich neighbourhoods, Vancouver’s Eastside. Whether it is your first crawl or your 15th, you will be sure to find some treasures as you weave your way through studios filled with furniture makers, jewelers, textile artists, painters, potters, metal workers, photographers, the list goes on! In the past 15 years, we have seen the Eastside Culture Crawl Society grow from a grassroots 100% volunteer initiative to a thriving organization with a Board of Directors, Executive Director, Publicist, and numerous contractors, without ever losing its grassroots heart. We would like to extend a special thank you to all of our volunteers, past and present, who have helped make this event one of the most loved weekends of the year. We are also most grateful to the sponsors, visitors, artists, and the community at large who have to contributed so generously to the success of the event. Our organization has been working hard to create more opportunities for artists all year round. We studied the feasibility of developing non-profit studio space, had lots of creative brainstorming, and this year have an amazing expanded Echo Chamber in celebration of Vancouver’s 125th birthday. You will be dazzled by the line-up of musicians, dancers, spoken word artists, and other performers at the Echo Chamber, to be held at The Waldorf Hotel. Be sure to check out the ECC website for artist openings and up-to-date event information.

Welcome to the 2011 edition of The Eastside Culture Crawl. It’s with a sense of celebration of the creativity and open spirit of the artists, designers and craftmakers working in Vancouver’s Eastside that we mount this Jeffrey Boone annual three day Executive Director free event. As we all share a curiosity about the world of the artist’s studio, the Crawl represents a unprecedented opportunity for you to connect with a very broad range of makers of things thoughtful, meaningful, useful and beautiful in the spaces where they are made. Just as the Crawl has grown into such an enormously successful event the society has become an increasingly relevant organization that is often called upon by the community to support artists particularly on issues that relate to artist studio space. I am honoured to see the continued dedication of a diverse network of supporters who believe deeply in the potential of the Crawl to have a lasting positive impact on the lives of participating artists and on the life of our city. The Crawl receives generous support from the City of Vancouver, local businesses and the Strathcona BIA, as well as the very special gifts from private donations that support our ancillary activities such as Studio 101, the Echo Chamber and our strategic planning initiatives. Underneath all of that support is the tireless work and hundreds of volunteer hours given by each member of the Board of Directors and committee members year round. This dedication ensures the continued healthy development of the organization. Thank you for your support in attending. Enjoy the Crawl!

Here’s to another 15 years! Happy Crawling!

Studio 101

Studio 101 was born out of the inspiration to introduce children, to working artists’ studio practice through a studio visit with Eastside Culture Crawl artists and to have students be involved in the buying of a piece of work to go into their school’s collection. Taking place in the days following the Crawl, the program involves a classroom visit by a senior artist to prepare the students for the

field-trip. Once at the studio the class splits into smaller groups taking turns working with different artists. Each artist submits one pieces of work and the students select one of the submissions for their school. The program was conceived in 2008 by Mira Malatestinic and Richard Tetrault. A generous personal gift from Mira Malatestanic has supported the program’s 4 year development phase.

Mira Malatestanic

Serving on the Eastside Culture Crawl Board and touring young people at the VAG and Artist for Kids, for almost 10 years, Mira is a true “Artie”. Mira finds magic in connecting people to art and the community. Over the last few years she’s had the pleasure of working with the VGH foundation Art Committee as well as developing a program partnering this collection and Anneart Kristiansen’s Langara Art students.

Richard Tetrault

A painter, printmaker and mural artist working in the East Van. My interests include collaborative projects and community based mural projects, whether local or international. I have shown in over fifty exhibitions, including Cuba, Mexico, France, Poland, Thailand and across Canada. I am a member of La Raza Artists, as well as founding director of Eastside Mural Projects and Creative Community Collaborations.

Facility Project

The Crawl, being about artist, designers and craft-makers in their studios, we are keenly aware of the impact of Vancouver's real estate development. The sorts of spaces that traditionally have been affordable for the creative activity celebrated by the Crawl are coming under pressure to increase rents or are being redeveloped. With its vast network of working artists, the Crawl is often the go-to organization for issues related to this issue. As 10

a result we have begun looking at developing a non-profit owned and operated studio space facility within the Crawl area. With very generous support from the City of Vancouver through the Cultural Services' Cultural Infrastructure Grant program, The Audain Foundation, Take Root Properties, and Malinka Financial and advised by Facility Committee Coleen Nemtin, Morley Faber, Byron Aceman, Jeffrey Boone and Chaired

Ross den Otter Project: A Room with a View

A Room with a View installation will be at the Antique Market on 1324 Franklin Street at Clark Drive. This installation within the warehouse will be on view during business hours between November 5th through 27th. Visit eastsideculturecrawl.com for further details. About the Installation

The core concept for A Room with a View installation arose from the house in East Vancouver that the artist lives in. Strathcona is Vancouver’s oldest community and features some of the city’s oldest homes. This installation explores the facades of some of those houses captured using a pinhole in place of a lens, on a digital camera obscura. Projections of those images are viewed through the frosted panes in windows purchased from the Vancouver Heritage Foundation.

About the Artist

Born in Port Alberni BC in 1969, Ross was raised in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island and lives and works in Vancouver. His career began as a newspaper photographer while a teenager in the 1980‘s. He moved to Vancouver

later that decade to study photography at Langara College. His artwork blends his interests in photography, metal smithing, painting and printmaking. For over two decades, his photographic work has appeared in publications across North America. Proudly supporting the idea of a strong community his artwork has sold to benefit charity and arts organizations locally and globally. In addition to private collections in North America and Europe, his work was recently added to The UBC and VGH Hospital Foundation’s art collection. He is in the faculty of the digital photography department at The Vancouver Institute of Media Arts (VanArts).

The Urban Weaver

Todd Devries, Sharon Kallis and Debra Sparrow are local artistweavers from Haida, Welsh and Musqueam backgrounds. They are collaborating with the Stanley Park Ecology Society and the Vancouver Park Board in an exploration of how the invasive plants of the city can be used as urban substitutes for traditional weaving materials. English ivy, Himalayan blackberry and yellow flag iris hold great potential as contemporary alternatives- replacing materials such as cedar bark and cattails that cannot be sustainably harvested in urban centres.

The artists will be working out of the MacLean Park Fieldhouse, near the Strathcona Community Centre and there will be open studio times and free community workshops scheduled for next spring and summer. Community members can also get involved in harvesting and preparation of the invasive materials for personal creative use. This exciting project is just getting started so please stop by the new MacLean Park studio space and meet the artists.
