Between The Lanes NEWSLETTER

FROM THE PRESIDENT The year has flown by, Short Course Season is finished and now we are about to start the Long Course Season for 2015/16. I can not wait to see the PBs continue and the confidence build amongst the swimmers. It was a great pleasure to be able to personally cheer on both Matthew and Daniel in their Age National campaign, to see both achieve such great results at an elite level was something I won't forget in a hurry. I am so proud of them as I know you all are as well. My personal congratulations to them both. The club has been busy since our last newsletter, from wrapping up Club Championships to the coaching clinic, swim-a-thon and Presentation Night, it has been great to see the kids thrive and enjoy and most importantly to have fun. My thanks to everyone who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that these events have gone to plan Âą without that we would not be able to put on such events. The Summer Season starts back on Friday 9 October, looking forward to seeing all our swimmers come back after their short break. Finally, I would like to welcome the new families that have joined our club since our last newsletter. It is lovely to see the club continue to grow and we warmly welcome you all to Blacktown.

If you are interested in joining the committee to help run and organise the Swimming Club or would like to hear what we talk about in these meetings, come along, its open to everyone. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to see a current Committee Member.

Goodbye to our FAVOURITE COACH It a sad moment as we say goodbye to one of our favourite coaches

Brendan Smith. Brendan has been a coach at BCSC for the past 5 years. We congratulate Brendan on his recent wedding to his beautiful wife Jessica and wish Brendan all the best in his future career in nursing. Brendan was a valuable asset to the BCSC Coaching Team and will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.

COACHING CLINIC WITH SARAH RYAN Our Gold, Silver, Bronze and transition Bronze squad club members were invited to attend a Sarah Ryan coaching clinic, what a day to be part of! As parents would well be aware of Sarahs decorated swimming career in the Australian teams at numerous Commonwealth, World Championships and Olympics. Not to mention being a world record holder as well! The first session was with the senior squad members who were put through their paces with drills and training from Sarah before the remaining club members arrived for an inspirational speech. The highlight was not only hearing all about McDonalds in the Olympic village but also being able to touch and put on Sarah's Olympic medals from both Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004. After the talk it was time for lunch as well as a spontaneous game of cricket. What do you do when you have no bat? Swimmers improvise with a kick board of course! It was lovely to see the grassed area near the club house sea of yellow and black uniforms.

a

It was then time for the junior members hit the pool for drills and a workout session with Sarah, finishing with a group photo for keepsakes.

to

Everyone in attendance loved the clinic Âą we look forward to another clinic in the future. Our thanks to Richard who made the day possible, to Sarah for coming to Blacktown and the ladies who ensured there was enough lunch for everyone. Kindest Regards Cassandra Galea - Junior Coach

SWIM-A-THON Congratulations to all that participated in our Swim-a-thon which was held on Sunday 19 April at Blacktown Aquatic Centre. It exhausts us to think of how many laps and kilometers were swum, an amazing effort by you all. Special thanks to our Club Vice President Maria Tiems, who organised the event, ensured that the swimmers were hydrated and had energy and to the parents who ticked off the laps and encouraged all on the day.

Our Winners Swimmer Who Raised The Most Amount Malik Dibs ($465) Highest Laps Male - Matthew Galea (176 Laps) Female - Kerri Tiems (176 Laps) Swimmers With The Most Laps 14 years/over - Kerri Tiems (176 Laps) 11 - 13 years - Matthew Galea (176 Laps) 10 years/under - Dyana Crabb (88 Laps) 10 years/under - Adrian Havron (88 laps)

TURN BOARDS A massive thank you to Steggles for the donation of the Clubs Drop in turn boards which have benefited all our squads from Mini squads, Intermediate, Junior, Bronze, Silver and Gold squads for our Winter season. Without these turn boards our swimmers would not have been able work on turns and underwater work which is often the difference between winning and losing a race, These turn boards have also been vital in the day to day operation and running of our squad program. We have been able to turn our 2 lanes we receive in Winter from council into 4 lanes which has been vital in not causing any disruption to our squad programming, days and times that the squads run. We thank Steggles and Richard Galea for sourcing this amazing donation and partnership.

A BIG THANK YOU, THANK YOU and THANK YOU to you all! What a great opportunity, congratulations Faye.

RAFFLES AND DONATIONS Raffle Prizes Thank you to Kirsty Mooy and Officeworks who have kindly donated over $400 worth of Stationery to be used as weekly raffle prizes on Friday Club Nights and our up and coming Blacktown October Carnival. All the funds raised go towards the weekly hire of the pool, staff wages, insurances and the day to day operating expenses that BCSC incur. Without the kind and generous donations we receive and also without the support that all our members give by purchasing raffle tickets we would not be able to continue.

Thank you Jobfind Thank you again to Jobfind and Richard Galea who kindly donated approx. $5000 of 12 month old office furniture to the BCSC Club. Our Club office is now filled to the brim with lockable cupboards, draws, filing cabinets, office chair, white boards and much more. Thank you to Richard and Samantha Galea and Assistant Coach Travis Foster who hired a Ute on the recent public holiday and gave up their free time to move all the office furniture in. Our office looks amazing and extremely tidy with now somewhere to store squad equipment, stationery, raffle donations etc. Thank you to Travis for lending us his muscles.

October Carnival Thank you to The Galea family who have donated the soft drinks for our BBQ and to the The Franjic family who have donated all the bottles of water (over 200 bottles) for our BCSC October carnival which is being held on Sunday the 11th October. Also a huge thank you to the The Penney family who have donated a $100 Gift Card from Stocklands for our BCSC October carnival . These wonderful donations help the Club put vital funds back into the day to day running of our Squad program and supporting all our Athletes across all levels. Thank you Libby and Family. If you can help or are able to donate in anyway please email the committee or our Club secretary Linda on bcscsquads@gmail.com.

SWIMMING This is a fantastic fundraising program where all purchases over $50 entitle Blacktown City Swimming Club Inc. to a $1 voucher. This is increased for each multiple of $50 spent. So, we hear you asking what do I need to do if I shop at the Good Guys at Prospect…. 1. The most important part of this program is that you MUST mention the “Skool is Kool” program when you are making your payment. Unfortunately once a payment has been finalised the Good Guys cannot issue the club with any vouchers. 2. Simply ask for the clubs name printed on your docket along with your details so the “Skool is Kool” vouchers can be issued to Blacktown City Swimming Club Inc.
