Environment for Art Storm drain murals are a public art project with a message

W

hat do motor oil, dog waste, and the contents of red Solo cups have in

common? They may end up dumped in a storm drain. That’s bad news, because everything that goes into a storm drain goes directly into our creeks, which feed the New River, our source for drinking water. The Town of Blacksburg hopes that some colorful new murals with environmental messages painted on several storm drains downtown will help remind people that whatever goes down the drain gets into our water. “There’s a common misconception that the water from storm drains goes through a treatment process, but that is not true,” Carol Davis, Blacksburg sustainability manager, said. Chemicals, waste, sediment, and leaves and grass clippings affect our water quality directly. “Art projects like this help draw attention to problems that are frequently overlooked,” Kafi Howard, Blacksburg stormwater engineer, said. “We want people to understand that if something’s on the ground, it eventually makes its way into the water. Small changes in behavior can make a huge difference.” Four storm drains downtown were identified for the murals. The town held a contest for local artists to submit their mural ideas, and 41 artists submitted 55 unique design concepts. Judges selected designs that were graphically bold with clear messages and educational potential. The selected artists will paint their murals this summer and an official unveiling and ribbon cutting will occur during Sustainability Week in September. “Blacksburg wants to be a place that uses the arts to talk about water quality, and all environmental issues that face our community,” Davis said.

Let’s take the train Community cooperation and public support may help bring Amtrak to the New River Valley in 2020

N

o one likes driving on I-81. Stress from traffic and noisy tractor trailers, wear

and tear for vehicles and drivers, is enough to dread any trip. But what if you could take the train? It would be possible to catch up on work, read a book, or take a cat nap--and get to D.C. by lunch. If efforts of local governments and community leaders come to fruition, an Amtrak stop in Christiansburg may make train travel a reality in the New River Valley. “Until about 50 years ago, the New River Valley was served by 12 passenger trains daily,” Ray Smoot, co-chair of New River Valley Passenger Rail 2020, said. Since then, the area’s population has grown, and traffic density on 81 has gotten worse. “A dependable, affordable alternative is needed,” Smoot added. Several studies are underway to determine what organizational structure will best support a facility, as well as whether the current rail infrastructure, which is owned by Norfolk Southern, can accommodate passenger rail. Local officials and government representatives have come together to show support for the train, and this bipartisan cooperation—from Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Radford, Pulaski, as well as higher education—has been critical to the effort’s success. Easier travel to the New River Valley from points north could improve business opportunities, provide additional connections for colleges and universities, and may bring an additional $1.9 million in tourism travel to the area. A plot of land near the Christiansburg Aquatic Center has been identified as a possible location for the station, but it may be managed by a regional authority, where several entities in the New River Valley contribute. Tee Time! Golf course updates improve play

A

fter almost a year, Blacksburg’s municipal golf course, the Hill, will reopen

this summer. Avid golfers looking for a fun challenge and players new to the game will enjoy the updates.

“Golf is moving toward nine-hole facilities that take less time to play,” Jeff Kleppin, course general manager, said. “With these improvements, we can provide the kind of experience golfers want.” Course improvements include regrassed fairways, greens and tees; additional tee boxes; and relocated or removed bunkers. All of the putting surfaces were enlarged, and greens on holes five, six and eight were rebuilt. A new two-hole practice area will allow players to refine their short game. Blacksburg’s course is open to anyone. The pro shop rents and sells equipment, so those without their own clubs can still enjoy a round. Golfers who make tee times in advance can walk all day for as little as $18, Monday through Friday. Nine holes with a cart costs $24 and 18 holes riding is $32. Weekend rates are slightly higher. Annual passes are also available. The town acquired the nine-hole, 54-acre course in 1970, but there have been no significant upgrades to the grounds since it was built in the 1920s, besides a sprinkler system. “We want to get new people to golf, but we need a place to teach them first,” Dean Crane, parks and recreation director, said. The town had an $850,000 budget for the project. Aspen Corporation of Daniels, WV did the construction and the work was overseen by architect Lester George of George Golf Design.

Tee Time! (Continued from page 5) “The Hill is a treasure for Blacksburg. It is in a beautiful location for this challenging and fun game,” Crane said.

FOR THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

The Senior Center has a wheelchair accessible bus with room to carry walkers, canes or similar assistive devices. However, staff is unable to personally assist individuals beyond loading and unloading the vehicle. Therefore, we require a caretaker or aide to accompany participants with special needs such as significant hearing or vision impairments or mental disabilities, who require personal assistance during the operation of the bus or Active Adult programs.

IMPORTANT TRIP INFORMATION

• Boarding of the bus begins 20 minutes prior to departure unless specified otherwise. • We ask that you arrive at least 20 minutes prior to departure. • Seating is on a first come, first served basis. However, staff may reserve front seats for those with physical limitations. • Staff will supervise loading of the bus. Front seats are in high demand. Therefore, if you are traveling alone, be prepared to share that front seat with another passenger. • We ask that you utilize the overhead bins for personal belongings. • Saving of seats is not permitted. However, if you are traveling with someone, it is allowed to save the one seat next to you. • Your comfort is important to us. However, it is difficult to find the perfect temperature for everyone. We suggest that you dress in layers.
