Process planning for future of Creston Valley BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

regulations bylaw No. 1395 are intended to reduce attractants to “problem animals” on properties within the Town of Creston.

With the expertise of a group from Whistler and funding help from the Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia (REFBC), Creston has jumped into a sustainability planning process. Shannon Gordon was in town last week to meet with an advisory team, conduct a focus group session and lead two public workshops on Saturday. “This process is about envisioning a successful and sustainable future for your community and creating it together,” said Gordon. “There are many reasons to integrate sustainability into your town planning, but at the most basic level, it seems pointless to plan for the community’s economic success if it can’t continue forever. It makes more sense to plan for success that is also sustainable in the long-term — success that is compatible with the constraints of a finite planet with limited resources.” Gordon said that a successful sustainability planning process in Whistler had resulted in creating a team that wanted to carry on with its work by offering services to other communities.

Town awards CBT funds

Deciding which organizations get grants has never been this easy. Creston town council announced at the April 24 regular meeting that Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) Community Initiative Program (CIP) funds totaling $56,527 would be distributed to 25 local groups. What made the decisions on which groups would get how much easy was that requests were actually less than the total dollars available. “It was a surprise,” Mayor Ron Toyota admitted. “Requests added up to about $9,300 less than we had available ($65,863). To be clear, we didn’t just automatically give groups what they asked for — we made some reductions when we thought the request was for too much and we didn’t fund at least one group that wasn’t really local.” Toyota said that CBT was asked whether the town could give some organizations more than they asked for. “Technically, I guess we could have done that, but we were warned that it could set a dangerous precedent and we certainly understood that concern,” he said. “The good news is that the unawarded money will be added to next year’s total, so we aren’t losing it.” Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) Areas A ($33,883), B ($66,509) and C ($31.090) have been holding meetings to determine how to distribute their CIP funds. CIP program funds are distributed once a year to CBT’s local government delivery partners, the regional districts of East Kootenay, Central Kootenay and Kootenay Boundary, and the City of Revelstoke, Town of Golden/Columbia Shuswap Regional District Area A, Village of Valemount and Ktunaxa Nation council. Each partner has its own process for recommending and selecting projects for funding. The CBT is committed to providing more than $18 million in CIP funds from 2011-2015, of which the RDCK gets about $6.46 million, or nearly $1.3 million annually. The RDCK then distributes the funds to the areas and municipalities within its jurisdiction on a per capita basis, although no area gets less than $30,000. Creston organizations receiving 2012 CIP funds include 1746 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps ($4,000), Addiction Recovery Centre of the Kootenays ($2,500), Central Kootenay Spay Neuter Animal Program Society ($3,000), Creston and District Community Resource Centre Society ($5,000), Creston and District Society for Community Living ($2,200), Creston Judo Club (first aid facilities, $155; national judo championships, $1,415), Creston Pet Adoption and Welfare Society ($5,000), Creston Valley Blossom Festival Association ($4,500), Creston Valley Community Radio Society ($500), Creston Valley Fall Fair Association ($1,000), Creston Valley Figure Skating Club ($2,000), Creston Valley Food Action Coalition (Harvest Share program, $2,500; farmers’ market, $1,250), Creston Valley Friends of the Community Greenhouse Society ($2,000), Creston Valley Horse Association ($500), Creston Valley Search and Rescue Society ($9,000), Creston Wave Swim Club ($1,000), Focus on Youth ($150), Health Arts Society ($2,000), Kootenay Literary Competition ($500), First Creston Scouts ($2,000), Silverwing Ecological Consulting (Kootenay community bat project, $250), Canadian Red Cross Society (Creston Valley branch, $1,107) and Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 29 ($3,000).

ROCKIN’ — Teens packed the Ingham Arts and Culture Centre on Saturday night for an Arts and Culture Week teen concert and dance that

included bands from House of Rock Studios. (From left) Rylen Hula, Kale Plotnikoff, Justin Vincent and Parker McLean of the Titans performed, as did the bands Pink Steel, Railz Edge and Ascendancy.

Planning From page 1 “We made lots of mistakes as we went along,” she said. “Why not help other communities not make the same ones? Also, through our experience in Whistler and in working with several communities last year, we have streamlined the process — it helps to get communities involved quickly.” An application for funding from the REFBC resulted in an unexpected boost, she said. The Sustainability Centre in Whistler applied for $50,000 to help offset the costs for five communities to create a sustainability plan in 2012. “But the foundation responded with a surprise,” she said. “We were awarded a $100,000 grant.” That grant allowed Creston and the four other communities that were selected to have more than half of their costs covered, said Town of Creston municipal services co-ordinator Ross Beddoes, who has taken a lead role in working with the Sustainability Centre. On April 27, about 30 area residents (the town is adamant that the planning should include the entire Creston Valley) gathered at Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce to learn more about what has been named Cultivating Creston is all about and to hear from two local advisors, as well as from Gordon. “I’m here to learn — a lot of this stuff is foreign to me,” admitted Mayor Ron Toyota. “I’m interested in learning about how we can make these things work for the Creston Valley.” Gordon explained that there are

several reasons for a community to plan ahead for the next 50 years. One is that there is an obligation that comes with gas tax money that the province turns over to municipalities and regional districts. “Also, it opens us up for getting more grants to help build our communities for the future,” she said, but cautioned, “Let’s not plan forever. There’s lots to be done right away.” Those things “to be done” would be more closely defined after she compiled the information from the weekend’s public sessions, she said. “The planning should be about an eight- to nine-month process,” Gordon said. Integrated community sustainability planning (ICSP) has four key benefits, she told the audience. It guides a community’s other planning and decision-making processes, it encourages collaboration and participation in the community, it provides a comprehensive look at all aspects of a community (not just environmental) and it helps align the community’s direction. A survey conducted before the ICSP process began indicated that citizens don’t feel that there is a common shared vision of what direction the Creston Valley should be taken. “Don’t be surprised by this,” she said. “Every community we have worked with has started out with the same belief.” One member of the Cultivating Creston advisory team said that he had been asked, “Why is Creston awesome?” “I’ve been here for 41 years and I didn’t expect to spend the rest of my life here when I arrived,” said Alex

And we couldn’t have wished for better. These two have given PAWS’ animals their time, attention and love every Sunday. Nilsson. “But I fell in love with what the outdoors here has to offer — Creston has it all. “But what is really awesome is that when you retire you can pick the organization you want to work with and really get involved. Everyone is so loving and caring here.” There is lots of room for improvement, though, he added. “Just imagine what the railway line would look like if became another Butchart Gardens,” he said. Also, he added, in an ideal Creston “the bunker” on Northwest Boulevard would be developed into affordable housing and services like therapeutic riding would continue and expand. “There is no greater thing in the world you can do than to serve others,” Nilsson said. “Because if you do, others will serve you.” Advisor Christine Ross said the concept of sustainability had moved from a concept to a real need since she was studying architecture in the 1970s. “I thought sustainability would be what I would be working on for my entire career at that point,” she said. “What happened?” There has been progress, though, she admitted. “Now it is actually in the mainstream. What an incredible opportunity we have!” “Sustainability planning is becoming mainstream,” Gordon echoed. “The constraints of the planet are becoming so apparent. The risk of inaction is so obvious.” More information can be found at www.creston.ca by searching “Cultivating Creston”.

Bear bylaw ‘goes too far,’ says Schmalz

From page 1 The bylaw amendment is not without controversy, though, as Couns. Jerry Schmalz and Scott Veitch recorded no votes on the bylaw readings. Schmalz has contended from discussions since last year that such a bylaw can’t be enforced and that public education is the best approach to deal with the issue. “I see this as another way that enforcement officials can invade your private space to ensure that you are sweeping up your spilt bird seed every three days,” he said on Thursday. “How ridiculous! I do believe that we have to look seriously at the issues that we are trying to police and in my estimation this bylaw goes too far. “I do not believe that we have a human/bear issue in Creston but we should be con-

scious of it becoming a concern and do our best to act proactively.” Veitch echoed the concerns cited by Schmalz. “The people I have talked to about this amendment are opposed to it,” he said. “People come here because it’s a great place to garden and grow fruit, but many of them also go away for periods of time. Are we going to start punishing people for that? … “I think there are lots of problems with this bylaw and I don’t think every issue can be addressed with laws. Is someone going to come up onto my deck to inspect my barbecue to make sure it’s clean? I think public education is the way to go, but I’m really not sure that bears in town have been a problem.” The amendments would require property owners and

occupiers to remove and dispose of fallen fruit from trees bushes at least every three days. Containers (including garbage cans) with problem animal attractants in them must have locking lids or be stored out of reach of problem animals. Problem animal attractants are defined in the proposed amendments as antifreeze, paint, food or other edible products, food waste, unclean barbecues, beehives, bird feeders, improperly maintained composts, grease barrels, accumulated accessible fruit and any other edible product or waste that could attract animals. Probably more controversial is that bird feeders (with the exception of hummingbird feeders) containing feed will not be allowed between April 15 and Dec. 1 of each year. At all other times feeders must be

for alcohol consumption and was given a 24-hour driving suspension. April 29 •In an ongoing issue, a Highway 3 resident was accused of playing the sounds of dogs barking through a speaker set up near a neighbour’s residence. Gollan said charges might be laid as there seems to be no other way to resolve the problem. •Police attended a 22nd Avenue North residence to keep the peace while one of the residents moved out.

suspended so they are not accessible to other animals and fallen feed must be removed from the ground and “properly disposed of” at least

every three days. The third and final readings of the bylaw amendments are expected to go before council on May 8.

Planning offers opportunity

After sitting in on a couple sessions in the sustainability planning process now underway in Creston I find myself with mixed emotions. Such planning could make an enormous difference in our valley, providing direction for the next half-century. But not much will change unless some influential, energetic, passionate and very determined personalities emerge to put the plan into action. What optimism I have at the moment comes from two sources. One is that the sessions I have attended did have some young people involved. We need new generations to participate and to lead — we are, after all, talking about their future. Most of our community leaders are at or near retirement age and, to be honest, I don’t see much evidence that many have what it takes to lead, inspire and cajole the majority of citizens to get involved. One of the young folks who is participating shared her excitement about sustainability planning and I was quick to respond — this is the “talk is cheap part of the process, I said, immediately regretting how negative that comment sounded. But the simple fact is that a couple of dozen people, mostly the usual suspects who are involved in almost everything, who sit at a table and talk is not the same as firing up an entire community to pull in the same direction. I was struck at Friday’s meeting, though, when architect Christine Ross talked about how sustainability issues have moved from idealistic concepts to mainstream subjects. It’s true. And perhaps that is the most heartening message I took from the hours I spent in meetings on Friday. We aren’t talking in airy-fairy terms any more. As facilitator Shannon Gordon said, “The constraints of the planet are becoming so apparent. The risk of inaction is so obvious.

In my opinion, it is our valley’s climate and fertile flatlands that offer our great opportunity for the future, which will have greater and greater challenges as fuel prices rise steadily

All should see how others live

To the Editor: (Re: “Gleaners should be grateful”, April 12 Advance, page 7) There has always been a rant on the poor and needy. That’s been going on for centuries. So have the comments against the helpers of the poor and the saying “cold as charities”, mainly from the ones who can’t con the charities or welfare, and think they are a cut‘ above the ones they are downgrading. I have lived in most of the Canadian provinces and volunteered at places like Gleaners. Every one of these places allowed us to purchase goods at the end of our shifts. So if the people who complain that they observe volunteers leaving with bagsful would like to really understand what is going on should volunteer one whole winter there. The donations these charities give to other charities and organizations help everyone in the community. All Gleaners-type charities get short on food at times and have to “ration” their donation of food, so measuring by weight, small bags and cupfuls in small clean containers makes sense. Otherwise, how can you keep all your clients fed? There are always two sides to any situation, and complaints are nearly always made because no one checked things out. If problems are made public and situations assessed, then this situation would not sound like the politicians slamming each other. Most of the volunteers at Gleaners are either past retirement or heading there at a gallop. Maybe some of the unemployed could help out. The poor, downtrodden, lack of jobs and all the other problems one hears about in Canada will always be there because folks like to complain. While complaining, these folks should check out how others live and survive in poor countries then they would be happy to be O Canadian! Shirley Willis Creston

DriveAble program help for seniors

To the Editor: (Re: “DriveAble leaves rural seniors at disadvantage”, April 19 Advance, page 8) As the minister responsible for public safety, I want British Columbians to know the facts about how we’re improving the DriveAble program to better meet the needs of drivers while maintaining public safety. As we get older, our cognitive abilities change — in a small number of cases, they change to the degree that driving simply isn’t safe anymore. It is very emotional and difficult to face the possibility that, after decades of driving, we may face the loss of our licences. I understand that — in fact, I went through that process with both my parents. It is important to note that a very small number of drivers, including seniors, actually lose their licences. Of 3.1 million B.C. drivers — 84,000 of whom are over 80 — only about 1,500

take a DriveAble assessment each year. The vast majority of seniors will continue to drive for a long, long time. About 95 per cent of referrals to take the assessment come from physicians, when they screen for cognitive impairments they believe make it unsafe for their patients to drive. We clearly heard concerns from seniors about DriveAble. First, some seniors felt anxious about taking the onscreen DriveAble assessment. Second, that they want the driving assessments to be done closer to home, especially in rural communities. Several months ago, after listening to these concerns, I directed staff to look at program improvements. Our government listened and has taken decisive actions. The biggest change means that seniors will no longer have a decision made about their ability to drive solely based on an onscreen assessment. People who do not pass this assessment will be given the opportunity to take an on-road assessment. The province will pay for both assessments. Final decisions will be based on a combination of the two, plus medical information provided by their doctor. We are also in the process of developing a service delivery model to reduce the amount of travel for rural British Columbians. As a northerner, I am acutely aware of the challenge that travelling long distances creates for seniors. Our goal is to provide services as close to home as possible through regional expansion and increased mobile services. We also recognize that we have to do a better job of outreach and public education. Ministry staff will be working to connect with seniors and their families much earlier in the process, with a focus on how we can help prepare them for possible changes and how driver assessments work. Staff will also work with stakeholder groups (such as medical doctors and physician groups) who will assist us in developing new materials that explain age-related driving issues, medical fitness requirements and personal planning for driving retirement. Finally, we are going to continue to evaluate and review driving assessments. While DriveAble is a tool used in other parts of Canada and internationally, we are always open to continued improvement. A peer review is currently underway on DriveAble and we look forward to seeing the outcomes. We will be monitoring future research, and will be prepared to make adjustments based on what is learned. Our goal is a simple one: to ensure seniors can keep driving for as long as it’s safe, while ensuring decisions on their ability to drive are done in the most fair and respectful way possible. Management making too much money To the Editor: For Creston Town Hall to be managing a population of 5,300 with a payroll debt load of $2,582,351 makes one wonder if this figure isn’t cutting into the expenditures to service the town prop-

erly and give the taxpayers their true dollars’ worth. For a whistle stop town, is it a case of squandering the taxpayers’ contribution? Are we all complacent and apathetic? Judge for yourselves. Managements salaries include the municipal services coordinator, approving officer and chief building inspector ($81,643 each, director of public works ($121,001), executive assistant ($76,363), manager of engineering ($123,489), director of finance and corporate services ($113,114), director of development services ($108,450), town manager ($104,330, fire chief ($104,536), deputy fire chief ($81,021), works superintendent ($84,303), and waste water treatment plant chief operator ($85,474). For a group of public service employees at town hall to turn themselves into bureaucrats and have their meetings to jack up the taxes, water and sewer bills, and make believe that their exorbitant salaries are just, just don’t cut it. You people could shut down town hall for three weeks, turn off the lights, lock the doors and walk away. The pedestrians would still be tripping in the wheel ruts at the crosswalks on Canyon Street. A couple of stop signs are still sitting on the wrong corners. The poop would still be sliding down the pipes to the sewage plant, and we wouldn’t even know you were gone. In the three weeks, you people could take turns going around with the welcome wagon people and explain to the newcomers of all the wonderful opportunities there are to make a good living in this growing town and then mention that you work at town hall and make over a $100,000 a year. After your visit to the emergency with a broken nose from having a door slammed into your face, you would have sick leave and the time to ponder what provoked that reaction. In the town’s five-year financial plan, the mayor spoke of cutting costs. I agree. Drastic changes are necessary. Therefore I suggest the following: Coun. Joanna Wilson spoke of Creston being a volunteer town and that she would like to see it continue. Perhaps town council and the Regional District of Central Kootenay could take the lead on this until the end of their term to get us out of the hole they have been digging for us for the past five years. That would be worth a warm fuzzy. To get this town’s finances in order, layoffs of assistants and secretaries is imminent. The supervisory staff’s salaries could be reduced by 35 per cent and these people would still be making a good living. These matters should be a No. 1 priority on town council’s agenda at every meeting in the months to come. After the public reads this letter, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to even see the JWs at the polls of the next civic election for the change. The buck has to stop here, now that we know where our money is or isn’t going. We are taxpayers, not serfs paying to some kind of regime living high on the hog. In closing, there is something that every taxpayer and patron of the multi-million dollar rec complex has a right to know. Both Mayor Toyota and regional director John Kettle are advocates of the complex. When they attend a function at the arena such as a hockey game or home and garden show, either alone or with their wives or a group of friends, do they pay their support at the gate, or do they slide through for free on their influence? Smoothies a great way to add greens to diet

Greens are an incredibly healthy food — they’re all very low in calories, but are still very nutrient dense. We have many varieties of greens that are grown locally and some are the earliest things to be available from local gardens. They are easy to grow and don’t require a lot of room. Greens can even be grown in small planters on a balcony or doorstep, or even inside in the winter months.

The

Locavore's Cookbook Heidi Bjarnason

Generally speaking, the darker the greens, the more nutrient dense they are. While it is best to choose the darkest greens, it’s also important to get variety as different greens have different nutrients. Two of the earliest available greens are kale and spinach. Spinach contains large quantities of vitamins K, A and folate. But it is also a fantastic source of iron, calcium, vitamin C and many other nutrients. Here in the valley, many different kinds of greens are grown throughout the growing season and are sold at the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market. This includes salad greens, like romaine and red or green leaf lettuces, or greens that are better suited to being cooked like Swiss chard and beet greens (although baby chard and beet greens are nice to eat raw, as well) and some greens that can be eaten cooked or raw, such as kale and spinach. Fresh greens do not keep for very long

but if treated properly they can last up to a week or slightly longer, depending on the type of green. They should be washed and dried, any brown or wilted leaves removed, and the rest stored in the fridge. Greens can be stored in a sealed plastic bag, or in an airtight container with paper or cloth towels to absorb the extra moisture. If greens become limp, they can be soaked in cold water to revive them. Greens can be hard for anyone who isn’t use to them to add into their diet, but especially for kids. If you’re just starting to add greens as a regular part of your diet, make sure to get the freshest greens, as older greens may have more of a bitter taste to them (I find this especially with kale). Greens like spinach can easily be chopped and mixed into pasta dishes (especially ones like lasagna, but we even add it to macaroni and cheese), soups and even mashed potatoes. Don’t overcook the greens; they should just cook long enough to soften and wilt, as they’ll have a stronger flavor when completely cooked. Spinach and other greens can very easily be added to sandwiches, as well. Our favorite way — including my kids’ favorite way — to enjoy greens is in green smoothies. The color might scare you and they may sound gross, but please don’t let that stop you from trying one — we guarantee you won’t taste the green! You may even want to experiment with adding more or different types of greens. We usually use spinach in our smoothies, as it blends very well as long as tough stems are removed first. If you’re just trying a green smoothie for the first time, just add one handful of spinach and work up to adding more. You can

also experiment with any kind of lettuce, kale (be especially sure to remove all tough stems and blend very well) and even a little Swiss chard or other lettuces, but we find that spinach is by far the least noticeable so you may want to start with it. Be aware that the color of your smoothie depends on the type of fruit you use — if you use a darker fruit it might turn out brown or even very close to black, but trust us, it will still taste like a delicious fruit smoothie! This is our favorite formula for making green smoothies, but get creative! There are lots of different ways to enjoy a green smoothie. Basic Green Smoothie 1 large banana, frozen and cut up into 1-inch pieces for easier blending 1 C fresh or frozen fruit or berries (we use all kinds of local fruits including cherries, peaches, raspberries, strawberries and plums, but others like pineapple are delicious, too) 1-2 handfuls fresh spinach, tough stems removed 1-2 C milk (dairy or non-dairy) depending on the thickness desired up to 1 tbsp local honey or another sweetener, if desired For extra staying power, consider adding one or more of: 1 tbsp peanut or other nut butter 1/4-1/2 C cooked or soaked oatmeal 1 scoop your favorite protein powder 1-2 tbsp very finely ground flax seed

Blend all in your blender for at least two minutes, making sure that no green pieces remain and that the smoothie is completely blended and smooth. If your

Spring in air at rec centre

Spring has sprung, the grass has riz, I wonder where the flowers is? The one thing our maintenance department doesn’t get away from is going in circles. Between the endless

checking and recalibrating the automatic timer system. All our sprinkling is done from late evening through till morning, during the dark of night for the most part, which not only helps offset evaporation but is also less strenuous on the town water system. involved as participants are in the pool, biking on the streets and highway, and running around the town. Tia advises while she has many of the volunteers required to pull this off, we still require a few more so if you are looking for something fun (cheering on people sweating way more than you), not that long (maybe half a day), easy tasks (counting swimmers’ laps in the pool or help keeping cars from running over our participants), this could be for you! We are setting this up as an annual event, so there is also the opportunity to tell your great-grandchildren that you helped with the very first one. As I mentioned before, we are also setting up inside for all kinds of arena sports like basketball, floor hockey and of course, pickleball. Maintenance is painting some court lines on the curling rink floor as we speak and — bonus — with our new roof and wall insulation, it should be pretty bearable in there, even in the evenings (as anyone that attended, say, a graduation in the arena and lost pounds over the course of the ceremony). We’ll keep you posted when the new leisure guide comes out so you can see all the goodies yourself. Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

Festival parade promises to entertain crowd BY HUGH JOHNSTON

One of the major events of the Creston Valley Blossom Festival is the Saturday morning parade. In the early hours of May 19, volunteers begin the task of turning the Prince Charles Secondary School parking lot into a staging area for the big parade. Milk jugs are coded with numbers and the various components of the parade are assigned spots. As the clock keeps ticking, more and more entries begin to line up and take their spots. New parade director Tamara Cox and her team work diligently as time is always against them. Suddenly, shortly after 9:30 a.m., everything is in place, and the judges under the direction of chief judge Ed Vondracek begin their tough assignment of evaluating the floats and other entries that have asked to be judged. By 10:45, the judging is done, the winners have been notified and another group of volunteers carries placards in front of the winning entries, which will draw a huge hand as the parade winds its way down Canyon from 18th Avenue to Devon Street.

Oh, what a parade it is! Dignitaries, like the citizen of the year, who was named the night before, completes his or her first official task of riding in a convertible in the parade. Members of Creston town council, including the mayor, and politicians from the area at the federal and provincial levels round out the dignitaries. It wouldn’t be a parade without bands and you can expect at least two pipe bands, a bugle marching band and the Shriners all providing entertainment along the way. One of the more competitive parts of the parade are the various floats. Some designed by professionals, while most rely on the skill and creativity of the various volunteers who design and build the float. There are various prizes up for grabs, including at the commercial and organizational levels. Prizes are also awarded to the best out of town entry. All of the hard work tends to pay off as the floats tend to draw the oohs and ahs from the huge crowd along the way. It just wouldn’t be a Creston Valley-style parade without some

horses — after all, in some sense, we live in horse country. Costumed riders, purebred horses and a chuck wagon or stagecoach or buggy just might make an appearance. There is always something for children and you can look for clowns of every description, even the ones that handle the pooper scooper behind the horses. The credit union train from Cranbrook will once again be making an appearance and later on that same day they will

be offering rides at the children’s show. Most people have their favourites. Some like to see that vintage cars will be making an appearance Sunday in the custom car show on Canyon Street. Others like the performance cars, while still others like the demolition derby cars. All parades have to come to an end and Creston is no different from other towns and cities. The fire department shines and

polishes up several of their units and the sirens wail as they bring the parade to a happy conclusion. This has been a preview of what to expect on May 19 and there is much more to come. The Creston Valley Blossom Festival welcomes all to enjoy the parade. Come early and pick your spot. If you plan to enter a float your entries are needed soon. Forms are available on the website at www.blossomfestival.ca.

Nelson opera, Khaos, coming to Creston NELSON COMMUNITY OPERA

Demeter (played by mezzo soprano Audrey Bissett) bringing down fire and famine on humanity in her fury at the abduction of her daughter.

The operatic smash hit, Khaos, that premiered to sold out houses and rave reviews last month in Nelson is coming to Creston. Nelson Community Opera is bringing its world premiere production of Khaos to the Prince Charles Theatre for one matinee performance on May 13. Close to 2,000 people saw the initial run of this newly commissioned opera at Nelson’s Capitol Theatre in early March. By all accounts, everyone who attended these performances, including those who had never seen an opera before, were bowled over by the power of the work itself, the quality of the performances and the extremely high level of theatrical presentation achieved by this production. Interviewed on CBC Radio, Opera Canada magazine reviewer Hilary Clark described Nelson Community Opera’s production as “spectacular, brilliantly done, and the music was extremely exciting.” NelsonDaily.com reviewer Bill Metcalf said, “I was gripped from the first moment by formidable

singers, a poetic script, compelling music, a beautiful set, stunning lighting and an ancient/modern story that just kept on driving relentlessly forward.” In a Globe and Mail article following the Nelson run, City Opera Vancouver artistic director Dr. Charles Barber said, “People who attend this show will be astonished at the production values and the vocal values.” Readers interested in learning more about this new opera should log on to the Khaos website at www. khaosopera.com, where they can also listen to excerpts from the work and view a selection of photos of the Nelson production. Composer Don Macdonald and director/playwright Nicola Harwood were commissioned to write Khaos in 2009 by Nelson’s Amy Ferguson Institute. Scored for seven soloists,

chorus, orchestra and a solo dancer, Khaos is a re-imagining of the ancient Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone, set in a contemporary world of climate change and looming global catastrophe. The work is performed entirely in English. The Nelson Community Opera production features Macdonald as musical director and librettist Harwood as the stage director, and stars soprano Allison Girvan as Persephone, mezzo soprano Audrey Bissett as Demeter, tenor Roger Ley as Hades and baritone Kevin Armstrong as Cerberus. The Creston performance is jointly presented by Nelson Community Opera and the Creston Concert Society. GREENHEART HERBAL SOCIETY

Have you ever wanted to indulge in a basil brownie? Do you worry that you don’t know the best way to care for your roses? Or are you just looking for a wonderful place to take mom to celebrate Mother’s Day? Then mark your calendar for May 12, when the first annual Herb Day celebrations arrive in Creston and you can enjoy all of these things. A celebration of herbs and their many uses, Herb Day is a worldwide event that sees herbal organizations hosting herbs themed events in the week leading up to Mother’s Day. This year, Greenheart Herbal Society and the College of the Rockies have joined together to bring the first ever Herb Day celebration to the Creston Valley. Each year, the International Herb Association selects one plant that is given the title Herb of the Year, and this year, roses will be honoured. See HERBS, page 24

Louie welcomes open house guests Herbs Advance Staff

Dozens of Creston Valley residents responded on April 25 to an invitation to visit during an open house at the Lower Kootenay Band complex. A drum circle provided background energy, lunch was offered and Lower Kootenay Band employees staffed display booths that illustrated the varied services provided in the small community on Highway 21. Chief Jason Louie welcomed visitors with following words: “Ki’suk kyukyit qapi niskil. Nawsanmiyitki hu sukil qukni kin wam. Hu qaklik kakin tawu hu qaki kaxi akaklahalxu. Nawsanmiyitki sukinikit nalapni. “Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Lower Kootenay Band open house. I would like to reflect back on a time where our administration office was a simple two-office facility with an open area which also housed our Yaqan Nukiy School. Times were different then, yet I recall such a feeling of community. Yes, there were social issues, housing was that of Third World conditions, alcoholism was rampant. However, we were a community. There were horses, the language was heard on a daily basis, both young and older men hunted; it was an expectation to provide. Although I was just a boy at that time it appeared that I had a place in my community — we all did. “I cannot stand here and make up a fairy tale that during that era all was well — it wasn’t. Life was extremely difficult. It was a luxury to have a telephone. I recall hav-

ing a limited amount of clothing, as did many from the community. Some nights, sleep is what was for dinner, yet to complain would be an insult to our caregivers. Television consisted of CBC and maybe two channels from Spokane. Unless it was Hockey Night in Canada or The Beachcombers, television had little interest to many. “I believe the year was 1989, the year technology came to Yaqan Nukiy. Many LKB members were connected to cable television! What a treat it was to have more than three channels. Times just seemed to be more simple; there wasn’t any social media, texting or email. People spoke to one another. I do miss those days. “The Yaqan Nukiy people are a strong people. When the laws of the land stated we could no longer perform our ceremonies, speak our language or wear our distinguished headdresses, many did comply. But the majority could not and would not. The Indian agent would describe many of our leaders as defiant. These were not acts of defiance but actions of a people who would stand for something greater than themselves. They stood for the future generations of Yaqan Nukiy. The bloodlines of the mighty chiefs flow through the veins of our people like a raging river. “We know loss. Death is far too familiar to the Yaqan Nukiy community. Some statistics say that the average Canadian might experience five deaths in their lifetime. I am 38 years old and have buried more than 38 friends and relatives. On the eve of a young man’s wake, my aunt was sitting behind me in this

very building. At 9:40 that night she leaned toward me and said, “I’m going home. I’ll see you later.” Fifteen minutes later, my aunt’s friend rushed into the wake frantically, saying “There’s

something wrong with your aunt. Come quickly!” My wife and my friend arrived at her home and she was unresponsive. We attempted CPR but were not successful. Creator had other plans for the woman who played a huge part in raising me. She journeyed on that night. “I share this story to underscore the importance of how life truly is short. Cherish the simplicities that life has to offer. We often take for granted our spouse, our brothers, sisters and cousins, even our dogs and cats. From experience I can say life can change drastically in the blink of an eye. “Today, we wish to showcase all the Lower Kootenay Band has to offer. On display you will see the hard work and dedication of LKB staff. Our administration and leadership does not claim perfection, but it does strive for

excellence. Through teamwork, the LKB chief and council and LKB staff have made a commitment to work together to achieve the very best for residents of Lower Kootenay. I encourage you to visit our hard-working teams’ display tables. “The Yaqan Nukiy School has been in operation since the late 1970s and it offers world-class education and culture opportunities to our students. It is not an easy task to be an educator. Teachers assist our children in development to become productive citizens of our country. “We have a work force initiative crew that consists of four dedicated LKB members. In a very short period of time they have transformed our kitchen into a thing of beauty. An office is now being constructed, as well as patio decks. “It is important for LKB members to recognize their responsibility to educate themselves of the operations of the administration. Today is an opportunity for our members, guests and friends to gain an understanding of the organizational structure of the band and various policies and procedures. What is the procedure for applying for post-secondary education? What is the procedure for applying for social assistance? When do chief and council meet? These questions can all be answered here. Today, we also wish to address some of the communications barriers we have been experiencing. “On paper, we are the Lower Kootenay Band. In our hearts, we are Yaqan Nukiy. We are warriors. Thank you and welcome to our open house.”

From page 23 The Herb Day 2012 celebrations here in Creston are scheduled to take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. May 12 at the College of the Rockies and will feature four workshops on a wide range of rose related topics including “Successful Rose Gardening” with keynote speaker Vanessa Farnsworth. She will be speaking about the best types of roses to plant in herb gardens, as well as hardiness, propagation and maintenance issues affecting roses. Other workshops will include “The Joy of Roses” with Jean Wilson, “Decorating with Roses” with Bev Pommier and Ginger Fulop, and “Culinary and Medicinal Uses of Roses” with Rachel Beck. In addition to the workshop series, the day offers a wonderful treat for the taste buds in the Herb Day tea room, where herbs will be used to create scrumptious treats, such as cucumber and herb butter sandwiches, rose petal scones, lemon chamomile squares and basil brownies. While guests enjoy their tea, they will be serenaded by talented local musicians Starla Ek and Kalen Huscroft. The Herb Day 2012 celebrations also feature mini demonstration sessions on making herb related products, a wonderful col-

lection of vendors selling herb and garden related items, and a great herb plant sale (which starts at 9 a.m.). It is a perfect chance to come away with some interesting gifts for Mother’s Day or to simply treat yourself to something wonderful. People will also have the chance to purchase raffle tickets at the event for a chance to win, among other wonderful prizes, a beautiful handmade rose-themed quilt made by local quilters. Funds raised from Herb Day 2012 will go to maintaining and expanding the gardens as well as to purchase herb related books for the Creston and District Public Library. Greenheart is keeping the cost for Herb Day 2012 as reasonable as possible as it wants people to embrace this event and help to make it an annual event. The cost is only $25 for a full day pass, which gives access to all the workshops, tea room and vendor area, and these day passes can be purchased in advance at the college. For those who wish to visit just the tea room and explore the vendor area, the cost is $10 and tickets will be sold at the door. A full schedule of events is available at the Greenheart website www.greenheartherbalsociety.org or at the reception desk at the College of the Rockies. To get more information or to register for the full day call the college at 250-4285332.
