Dear Conference Participants: It is my true and distinct honor and joy to welcome you to the 10th Annual National Black Pre-Law Admissions & Preparation Conference and Law School Recruitment Fair 2014. This year, we celebrate a decade of inspiring and empowering aspiring Black lawyers! We made it to year ten - a tremendous milestone that I am proud of. Although this has been a tough journey, I continue my excitement about this conference, the work that we are doing, and the impact that we are making. Thank you to all those who support our heartfelt mission of providing this greatly-needed service to future Black lawyers from across the country who need to come to a positive place where they can get solid “insider” information, resources and networking opportunities from people who truly want to see them succeed in pursuing the challenging path of becoming a lawyer. You will have the chance to hear from some truly amazing law students, law professors, lawyers and judges who have not only succeeded in their own academic and professional careers, but who understand that true success is in the success of us all as a collective. All of these people who choose to be a part of this conference are truly my superheroes because they have taken on the additional social responsibility of being advocates for diversity in the legal profession, being mentors and role models – when they really don’t have to. Our message is simple: we come from where you come from, we look like you and we have been told that we cannot do this, but although the road was extremely tough, we stand here today showing you living proof that it can be done and we welcome you into our professional ranks. Make sure that you participate and get pinned! This conference was created for you and especially with you in mind. Our goal is to help increase the numbers of African Americans who are better prepared to take on the challenges of pursuing a professional legal education by filling in the informational gap that exists within our community. Although we often hear about the over saturation of lawyers, please understand this is not true when it comes to Black lawyers. We only make up 5% of all American lawyers and our communities continue to be underserved. Make no mistake, we are greatly needed.

Message from the National Director of Pre-Law I am extremely honored to serve as the 2014-2015 National Director of the Pre-Law Division. Pre-law students are the future of the National Black Law Students Association and it is imperative that we are responsive to their needs. The Story Behind the Conference Why was the National Black Pre-Law Conference created? When Evangeline was a college student, she knew that she wanted to go to law school. Although she was clear about her goal, she didn’t receive any true pre-law advisement, had very little information on the realities of what law school would be like, had few chances to meet any real-life lawyers, and did not have any mentors to assist her. She was left to navigate the daunting law school admissions process alone.

“I knew there was so much I didn’t know. And there really was a great deal of information that I didn’t realize I didn’t know. What made matters worse is that we didn’t have the Internet back then, and the library on my college campus had extremely limited resources, especially related to law school,” she reminisces.

s she looks back on those years, she recalls having a great desire to attend law school and assumed that she was doing everything right (working hard in all of her classes and making straight As), but at the same time, feeling lost. She recognizes that although she was on the right track, because she didn’t have the correct knowledge or mentorship, she wasn’t doing all that she could have to make herself a truly well-prepared, and more competitive, standout applicant.

She is adamant that ability and drive were not the issue, but simply not knowing any better. She is passionate about the fact that she could have greatly benefitted from real assistance. She knew there was information she was missing, but didn’t know where to find it, and the few lawyers she encountered stated that law school was tough, but were unwilling to provide the necessary mentorship to help fill in the missing pieces. “Although I was a serious straight A student, always studying and focused on the future, no one really explained to me that I had to have a strategy and a written success action plan to effectively compete and that I would be competing on a national level with lots of other straight A students with the same goals I had. I could have been in a better position to be a much more sophisticated and ultra-competitive candidate had I had good information, mentoring, and the opportunity to network with law students and lawyers who cared about my success. You can be bright and a hard worker, but without the right information and mentors, you are at a tremendous disadvantage,” she adds. 26 | www.blackprelawconference.org

As a college undergrad, she made a promise to herself that once she graduated from law school and became a lawyer, she would never forget what it felt like to be the first in her family to pursue a law degree. She vowed to remain committed to doing everything in her power to help others in her situation. Through creating the conference, she kept that promise. There was nothing like the National Black Pre-Law Conference when Evangeline was in college or law school - nothing that addressed the issues that she and other African Americans faced. She knew it was time for a change. She had tried other avenues on her own to address the issue - writing and publishing books, establishing a national Black pre-law organization, creating an informational website, and an e-mentorship program - which were all helpful in their own way. But nothing could replace the dynamics of an event and in-person connections - networking and opportunities for mentorship - with so many different law students, administrators, professors, and lawyers on a national level. Now, hundreds of future Black lawyers, law school representatives, law students, and lawyers from all over the country converge in Houston to participate in the country’s largest and most comprehensive pre-law conference – The National Black Pre-Law Admissions & Preparation Conference and Law Fair – now entering its ninth successful year. And Evangeline plans to not only continue, but to make it bigger and better and ultimately - through greater outreach and technology reach as many people as possible..

DESCRIPTION: The featured panelists in this session will discuss how aspiring lawyers without personal or family wealth will be able to finance an expensive professional legal education. Information will be provided about funding resources available including federal and private loans, merit-based and need-based scholarships, fellowships, grants, and how incoming law students can qualify for them. They share information on Loan Repayment Assistance Programs (LRAPs) that are offered by law schools, state bar foundations, public interest employers, and federal and state governments for law graduates seeking lower-paying public interest careers. They will also talk about the average debt load of law school graduates, and discuss the importance of minimizing debt by living within one’s means while a law student, debt management after law school graduation, and how one’s student debt load can impact their everyday lives and career decisions. Additionally, they will explain the marketability of the law degree, the current legal job market, and the realities of law schools graduating more students than there are new jobs, and what law graduates are doing for employment and to earn a living if they don’t find their dream legal job right out of law school. They will address the general oversaturation of lawyers versus the underrepresentation of Black lawyers. About Professor Johnson Following graduation, Professor Creola Johnson spent four years practicing bankruptcy and corporate law at Klett, Lieber, Rooney and Schorling in Pittsburgh. She has taught at the West Virginia University College of Law and has worked as a staff attorney with Pittsburgh’s Neighborhood Legal Services Association, supervising a bankruptcy project for law students. Before joining the Moritz College of Law faculty, Professor Johnson was a faculty fellow at the University of Iowa College of Law. She teaches Sales, Secured Transactions, Debtor and Creditor Rights, Business Bankruptcy, Consumer Protection and Non-Conventional Lending, and Consumer Law.
