Boo Who? By Ebony Burroughs, Contributing Writer One morning I was driving to work listening to the Steve Harvey morning show. The morning crew was doing the dating game the same as they have done every Tuesday before. When Tommy started ogling the 40+ yr old ladies competing for the date with the bachelor, Steve chastised him by letting him know these women were not kids. They will be your woman and you will be their man and the next step is marriage. "They won't be your boo." I started thinking about my own dating situations and how in the last 3 or 4 years, I had not been anyone's woman and cannot say I have been able to refer to anyone I was being as my man. None of my relationships up to this point have had real marriage potential, despite my efforts. I have been the Boo, the "Friend" (always in quotations), the other half of the we in "we're just kickin' it", and the purgatory partner, all in the attempt to reach the point where he can truly say, "This is my woman." Today, I have accepted that I am really not boo material, or any of those other commonly used labels of affection, if for no other reason, than because I am no good at maintaining the criteria. To me, dating is an investment opportunity. It takes a lot for a man to be interesting enough for me to want to spend any measurable amount of time with him. That equates to my inability to date multiple men at once. I enjoy the process of actually getting to know someone and seeing if we have what it takes to meet each others' relationship requirements. Do we have staying power? Can we fervently disagree and still like, not just love each other at the end of the day. I desire to love and be in love and I will never reach that level if I'm working on knowing 2 and 3 men at once.

I think women are natural investors and because of this, we are naturally territorial. I know I am. If the guy I am dating is spending time with another woman, I want to know who she is to him. Any woman who feels this way isn't jealous or insecure in my book. Instead, she's conscious and aware of her situation. For me, I know I am a natural giver and will probably always be the person giving just a little bit more than the other in the relationship. It's a good thing I don't keep score. However, if he's "getting" from someone else, he should not look to me to give it too. (continued page 9)

BLACKOPPS ENTERTAINMENT

Continued from Page 12 In contrast, the Boo does not invest, but instead, she hovers. She does just enough to stay relevant in the hopes that he picks her to graduate from Boo to something more. Personally, I am well past the Boo and homey lover friend stage of life. It isn't that I can't play the game, but it's just not fun for me anymore, and this is true for many women around my age who have achieved their own level of individual success. So, for all the men looking for Miss New Boo, I think I can speak for those of us who have matured and surpassed "Boo-ness" by saying, we are out of the minor leagues and into the majors. We have been there, done that, and I can guarantee whatever you think you need to teach us as the Boo in your life, we have already learned. We can't even pretend to be that girl anymore because it just doesn't suit the women we have become. Miss New Boo is just playing for fun... The future Mrs (fill in the blank) is in it to win it. Miss New Boo might fall in love with you, but The future Mrs. (fill in the blank) got love in reserves to love you past all your baggage and all the relationship wounds you will incur together. You can give Miss New Boo just enough to keep her hoping and waiting, but The Future Mrs. (fill in the blank) will hold you to your word or any insinuation of it and not be afraid to have expectations. Hi, I'm The Future Mrs. ____________. Glad to meet you.
