Director al Festivalului / Festival Director Festivalul Filmului Evreiesc Bucureşti este în primul rând un festival al cunoaşterii, al apropierii, al descoperirii. Este în acest sens o adevărată expediţie antropologică şi chiar una dintre cele mai complexe. În al doilea rând, el este un festival al împrietenirii, al uimirii şi bucuriei recunoaşterii în celălalt. Festivalul creează un timp şi un spaţiu comun în care ne ajută să ne descoperim şi redescoperim, dincolo de istorie şi geografie, dar împreună cu acestea, prieteni şi nu străini, fraţi şi nu duşmani. Cel care le face posibile pe toate acestea este actul artistic cinematografic, astfel că, în al treilea rând, FFEB este şi un festival de film în cadrul căruia descoperim unicitatea şi unitatea omului prin intermediul creaţiei artistice. Avem astfel prilejul de a ne lăsa răscoliţi, despuiaţi, disecaţi, recompuşi, treziţi, încântaţi, fermecaţi de măiestria cu care au ştiut creatorii scenariilor, imaginilor, sunetelor şi al montajelor să construiască filmele.

First of all, Bucharest Jewish Film Festival is a festival concerning knowledge, proximity and discovery. It is a genuine anthropological journey, one of the most complex of all. Second, it is a festival of getting closely, of wonder and joy, the joy of seeing yourself in the other. It creates a certain time and space, a common ground for discovery and rediscovery, beyond history and geography, but on their behalf; friends, not strangers, brothers, not enemies. What makes all these possible is Cinematography, and BJFF is a film festival in which we discover the uniqueness and the unity of the human being through artistic creation. We let ourselves twisted, undressed, dissected, recomposed, awakened, delighted, charmed by the virtuosity of those creators, by the scrips, images, sounds or montages of their films.

În timpul primăverii, verii, toamnei şi iernii pe parcursul unui an întreg, filmul prezintă o documentare asupra transformării parcului, şi cu o expresie cinematică spectaculoasă spune povestea oamenilor care vizitează parcul şi lucrează acolo: Yaacov, a cărui soţie l-a părăsit şi care de atunci a avut un trai trist şi singuratic; Athir, care plănuieşte să se mute în Canada din cauză că viaţa în Israel nu-i permite să-şi atingă potenţialul maxim; Yael, care a fost forţată să se căsătorească la vârsta de 13 ani şi a fost abuzată fizic şi mental pe parcursul mai multor ani; Itzhak, care încă nu şi-a revenit după moartea în război a fratelui său şi-şi caută refugiu în apele parcului. Acestea sunt doar câteva din povestirile captivante şi emoţionante ale persoanelor surprinse în film. Regizorul Ran Tal, care demontează şi reasamblează mitul Kibbutz-ului din filmul său “Children of the Sun”, studiază cele mai profunde părţi ale societăţii israeleşti cu umor, frumuseţe, durere şi compasiune în cea mai neaşteptată locaţie - un parc de agrement.

“The Garden of Eden” is the story of Gan HaShlosha, better known as the “Sakhne”, one of the largest, most famous and most visited parks in Israel. During the spring, summer, fall and winter seasons of one full year, the film documents the park’s transformation, and with a spectacular expression of cinematic beauty, it tells the stories of the people who visit the park and work therein: Yaacov, whose wife left him and who has since been living a sad and lonely existence; Athir, who is planning to move to Canada because life in Israel does not enable him to reach his full potential; Yael, who was forced to wed at the age of 13 and suffered many years of physical and mental abuse; Itzhak, who has yet to recover from the death of his brother in war and seeks a refuge from the mourning in the cool waters. These are but some of the captivating and touching individuals which the camera encounters. Director Ran Tal, who dismantled and reassembled the myth of the kibbutz in his film “Children of the Sun”, studies the innermost parts of Israeli society with humor, beauty, pain and compassion in the least expected location – a recreation park.

Mi-am petrecut copilăria nu foarte departe de parcul Sakhne. Mi-am petrecut toate vacanţele de vară în fermecătoarele piscine cu apă. Pe măsură ce anii au trecut, parcul şi-a creat un renume. Multe lucruri au început să se schimbe. Într-o zi o poartă a fost adăugată, apoi un gard, apoi a fost cerută o taxă. Vizitatorii au început să arate diferit, să vorbească diferit şi chiar să mănânce diferit. Mă simţeam ca şi cum fusesem expulzaţi din Grădina Edenului. După ce am crescut şi mi-am văzut de viaţă, Sakhne era deja “al lor” - aparţinea celorlalţi: arabii, evreii ortodocşi, ruşii şi toate celelalte componente constituente ale mozaicului societăţii israeliene. Prin urmare, în timpul vizitei mele recente aici, am fost surprins să întâlnesc câţiva veterani ce ajunseseră încă de la 6 am pentru o baie. “Venim aici în fiecare zi”, mi-au zis şi păreau destul de fericiţi. După această întâlnire, mi-am amintit că poveştile despre parc conţineau citate ale unui înţelept Talmudic. Scria, sau aşa se zice, că poarta spre Grădina Edenului este localizată în izvoarele văii Beit Shean. Este miraculos, prin urmare să descoperi că Grădina Edenului este în întregime o creaţie umană. I spent my childhood not far from the Sakhne. I spent entire summers among the enchanting pools of water. As the years went by, the park made a name for itself. Many things started to change. One day a gate was added, then a fence, then an admittance fee was required. The many bathers who visited looked different, spoke different and even ate different food. I felt as if we had been expelled from the Garden of Eden. When I grew up and went on with my life, the Sakhne was already “theirs” – it belonged to the others: The Arabs, the Orthodox Jews,the Russians and all the other constituents of the mosaic of Israeli society. Therefore, during my recent visit there, I was surprised to meet a few “old timers” who had arrived at 6am for a swim. “We come here every day”, they said and seemed rather happy. After this encounter, I remembered that stories about the park included quotes from a Talmudic sage. He wrote, so they say, that the gate to the Garden of Eden is located in the springs in the Beit Shean valley. It is wondrous therefore to discover that the Garden of Eden is entirely a man-made creation.

An opened safe deposit leads to a known burglar. What seems an easy case soon starts to tangle. When he is called off the case, he continues on his own. The investigation leads him onto thin ice. David Ondříček - director, producător, scenarist - a absolvit şcoala de filme documentare în Praga, FAMU. După realizarea mai multor documentare, a debutat în 1996 cu “Whisper”. Filmul a ajuns al doilea cel mai vizionat în 1996 în Republica Cehă şi a fost nominalizat la Premiile Tiger la Rotterdam IFF în 1997 şi a şi câştigat Premiul Promoţional la Festivalul “Young European Film” în Cottobus. În 2000, David Ondříček şi-a prezentat cel de-al doilea film,”Loners”, care i-a adus mult succes atât în ţara sa cât şi în afară. “Loners” a primit nouă nominalizări la Czech Lions, dintre care a şi câştigat două dintre ele. De asemenea a câştigat trei premii la Mannheim Heidelberg IFF în 2000 şi în acelaşi an a primit premiul telespectatorilor la Thessaloniki IFF şi Warsaw IFF şi trei premii la festivalul de film din Plzeň. “One Hand Can’t Clap”, al treilea film al său de lung metraj, din 2003 a fost nominalizat la trei categorii la Czech Lions. Mihal Brezis & Oded Binnun au absolvit Institutul de Film din Ierusalim Sam Spiegel - Israel. Filmele lor de diplomă “ Sabath Entertainment” şi “Tuesday’s Women” au fost difuzate şi premiate în numeroase festivaluri din întreaga lume precum şi de canale de televiziune ca Sundance Channel şi Canal+. Filmul lor recent “Lost Paradise” a primit peste 20 de premii la festivalurile internaţionale. Printre acestea s-au ocupat şi de regizarea unor videoclipuri şi a unor spoturi publicitare. În prezent relizează un film de lungmetraj cu suportul Israeli Film Fund. Mihal Brezis & Oded Binnun are graduates of the Sam Spiegel Film Institute in Jerusalem - Israel. Their Diploma films ‘Sabath Entertainment’ and ‘Tuesday’s Women’ were screened and awarded in numerous festivals world-wide, and acquired by broadcasters such as the Sundance Channel and Canal+. Their recent film ‘Lost Paradise’ has received over 20 international prizes in international festivals. In between they have also gone to direct music videos and commercials. Currently they are developing a feature length film with the support of the Israeli Film Fund.

Since his directorial debut 10 years ago, Simon, a forty something filmmaker, nowadays spends more time shooting the breeze than shooting films. Following a silly bet he makes with an actor friend, he shaves his head and discovers a huge bizarre hump in the middle of his skull. Sick with worry, he consults a plethora of doctors, none can reassure him. Is it a fatal disease? Is he dying? How long does he have? As he anxiously waits for results, he decides to make a quick, no budget film about his life; perhaps his very last.

Renaud Cohen a realizat nouă scurtmetraje şi documentare înainte de a regiza “Once We Grow Up”, primul său film de lungmetraj. Cohen a obţinut o diplomă de master în limba şi civilizaţia chineză în 1988 şi în 1992 a absolvit de la cea mai prestigioasă şcoală din Franţa, FEMIS, cu o diplomă de regizor. Din 1996 până 1999 a regizat trei documentare despre viaţa în China contemporană, inclusiv “Les petits pains du peuple” (“The People’s Cake”,1999), difuzat pe canalul francez-german ARTE. Cohen a câştigat mai multe premii, inclusiv premiul special al juriului la Festivalul de Film din Edinburg pentru filmul său “Reflections of a Boy”. “Once We Grow Up” a primit de asemenea recenzii excelente din partea Le Monde şi Cahiers du Cinema.

Renaud Cohen made nine short features and documentaries before writing and directing ONCE WE GROW UP, his first feature film. Cohen earned a masters degree in Chinese language and civilization in 1988 and, in 1992, he graduated from France’s most prestigious film school, the FEMIS, with a degree in film directing. From 1996-1999, he directed three documentaries about life in contemporary China, including LES PETITS PAINS DU PEUPLE (THE PEOPLE’S CAKE, 1999), which was broadcast on the French-German television channel ARTE. Cohen has won several awards, including a special jury prize at the Edinburg Film Festival for his film REFLECTIONS OF A BOY. ONCE WE GROW UP opened at more than a dozen theatres in the Paris metropolitan area and received excellent reviews from Le Monde and Cahiers du Cinema.

În acest documentar intim, cineasta Mehrnaz Saeedvfa examinează rolul important pe care filmele hollywood-iene l-au jucat în viaţa sa, atât ca tânără cinefilă în Iranul prerevoluţionar, cât şi ca cineastă şi profesoară în Iran şi Statele Unite din ziua de azi. Mehrnaz pune accent îndeosebi pe relaţia pe care a dezvoltat-o pe când era tânără cu imaginea lui Jerry Lewis, cunoscut actor american de film, care a încântat publicul din toată lumea cu portrete amuzante ale unor inadaptaţi în comediile hollywood-iene din anii ’50 şi ’60. Cu ajutorul unor clipuri din filmele lui Lewis, Saeedvafa ilustrează modalitatea în care schimbările pe care le suferă personajele lui Lewis reflectă transformările care aveau loc în viaţa ei, oferindu-i în acelaşi timp consolarea şi compania de care avea nevoie într-un moment care s-a dovedit haotic pentru ea. Iluziile lui Mehrnaz vizavi de acest personaj empatic sunt însă spulberate în momentul întâlnirii cu acesta.

In her intimate documentary “Jerry & Me,” filmmaker Mehrnaz Saeedvafa examines the significant role that Hollywood movies played in her life, both as a young film lover growing up in pre-revolutionary Iran, and as an adult working as a filmmaker and educator in both Iran and the USA. Of particular focus in “Jerry & Me” is the intimate relationship young Mehrnaz develops with the image of Jerry Lewis, the iconic American film auteur who delighted audiences around the world with hilarious portrayals of outcasts and misfits in popular Hollywood comedies of the 1950s and ’60s. As illustrated through a variety of Lewis’ film clips, the shifts in the comedian’s onscreen persona reflected the twists and turns of Saeedvafa’s own life, providing her much needed comfort and companionship during a time that was tumultuous and chaotic. Mehrnaz’s illusion of Lewis as an empathetic fellow outsider is ultimately shattered, however, by the stark reality of a real-life encounter with the star.

Mehrnaz Saeed-Vafa are un MFA de la Universitatea Illinois din Chicago. A predat cu normă întreagă la Departamentul de Film şi Video din 1989. Aria ei de expertiză cuprinde studii de cinema, de teroia filmului documentar, de producţie şi de alte forme alternative. A predat şi a scris pe larg despre cinema-ul iranian. Cartea ei despre Abbas Kiarostami, scrisă alături de Jonathan Rosenbaum a fost publicată de Universitatea de Presă Illinois în martie 2003. Mehrnaz este un regizor de filme premiate. Filmele ei “A Tajik Woman”, “Saless far from Home”, şi “Ruins Within” au fost prezentate în multe festivaluri de film internaţional. Filmul ei recent “A Different Moonwas” prezentat în diferite festivaluri de film europene în 2009 a fost ales pentru distribuţie de Festivalul de Film Spiritual European din Franţa.

Mehrnaz Saeed-Vafa has an M.F.A. from University of Illinois at Chicago. She has been teaching as a full time faculty at the Film and Video Department since 1989. Her areas of expertise are cinema studies (international cinema, Middle Eastern cinema, Exilic cinema, women, gender, race in cinema), documentary film theory and production and alternative forms. She has lectured and written extensively on Iranian cinema. Her book on Abbas Kiarostami co-written with Jonathan Rosenbaum was published by the University of Illinois Press in March 2003. Mehrnaz is an award winner filmmaker. Her films A Tajik Woman, Saless far from Home, and Ruins Within have been shown in many international film festivals. Her recent film A Different Moonwas shown in several European film festivals in 2009 and has been picked up for distribution by European Spiritual Film Festival in France. She is currently working a on a personal documentary film about her relationship with Jerry Lewis’s cinema. Mehrnaz has been the Artistic Consultant of the Festival of Films from Iran, at the Gene Siskel Film Center, Chicago since 1989.

Filmul ilustrează eroismul albanezilor din al Doilea Război Mondial prin intermediul unei călătorii vérité întreprinse de doi bărbaţi. Unul este Normal Gershman, un renumit fotograf evreu american determinat să documenteze relatări ale albanezilor musulmani care au salvat evrei în timpul celui de-al Doilea Război Mondial. Cu ajutorul lui Norman, Rexhep îşi începe călătoria spre Bulgaria şi Israel. Astfel, află că face parte dintr-o familie evreiască – chiar în momentul în care credinţa sa islamică, deşi suprimată timp de decenii de un regim comunist, este reafirmată. Prin intermediul poveştilor lui Rexhep şi a altor musulmani, descoperim o natiune plină de eroi de zi cu zi, care s-au separat de propaganda Islamului violent şi al anti-semitismului întâlnită atât de des în mass-media. 32 The Promise weaves Albania’s heroism in WWII through the vérité journeys of two men. One is Norman Gershman, a renowned Jewish-American photographer determined to document first-person accounts of the Albanian Muslims who rescued Jews during the Holocaust. The other is Rexhep Hoxha, a Muslim-Albanian. Rexhep must fulfill the promise made to a Jewish family his father rescued during the Holocaust and return to them a set of Hebrew books they left behind. And Rexhep’s promise is more than words — it’s part of his besa — an honor code that, among other things, pledges all Albanians to offer safe harbor to refugees. With Norman’s help, Rexhep embarks on a journey to Bulgaria and Israel. His quest brings about an epiphany that he is part of this Jewish family — even as his Islamic faith, long supressed under decades of communism, is affirmed. Through the stories of Rexhep and his fellow Muslims, we discover a nation of everyday heroes far removed from the narrative of violent Islam and anti-Semitism that’s so often portrayed in media today. Cel mai recent film de lungmetraj al lui Rachel Goslins, a fost “Bama Girl”, premiat la SXSW în 2008 şi difuzat la IFC. Primul ei film de scurtmetraj,”Onderduiken”, a fost despre istoria familiei ei în Olandacare s-a ascuns de nazişti în timpul celui de-al Doilea Război Mondial. Rachel Goslins’ most recent feature documentary, ‘Bama Girl, premiered at SXSW in 2008 and aired on IFC. Berlin in the 1930s. Comedian and cabaret star Hans Zeisig never fails to crack up his audiences with his Stalin-Hitler-show, performed with his close friend and acting partner Siegfried Meyer, a Jew. Leander Haußmann was born in Quedlinburg in 1959. After attending the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Art in Berlin, he acted in the theater for several years before becoming a director. He was the artistic director of Bochum’s Schauspielhaus from 1995-2000, during which time he appeared in Detlev Buck’s film JAILBIRDS. Iulie 1976, anul valului de căldură. July 1976, the year of the heat wave. Claude, an Algerian Jew who came to France 15 years earlier, takes his young wife Isabelle, his two sons Simon (12) and Bibou (8) and his mother-in-law Mamie to Brittany. It was Isabelle who, after having caught Claude in the throes of adultery, chose for this vacation to return to Le Rocher Abraham, the village where she was born. The day after their arrival they are joined by two other couples. The holidaymakers are viewed with distrust by the locals. Algerian Jews from Paris and provincial Catholics don’t mix comfortably. But gradually, the suspicion wanes, giving way to friendship, laughter and holiday romance. Over this long hot summer, Claude and Isabelle get their marriage back on track, while Bibou and Simon, spend a memorable summer discovering the world of grown-ups.

The funeral of Zef’s wife fell on a bad day – the day his brother Roni’s daughter was getting married. Inspired by actual events, THE REMEMBRANCE depicts a remarkable love story that blossomed amidst the terror of a German concentration camp in Poland 1944. But during the chaos of the end of the war, they are forcibly separated and each is convinced that the other has died. More than thirty years later in New York City, the happily married woman HANNAH believes to have seen her TOMASZ in an interview on TV. And she begins to search for him again.

Anna Justice s-a născut în Germania, Muenster. După călătoria în Los Angeles pentru a-şi finaliza studiileca translator, arămas acolo pentru cinci ani şi a obţinut prima ei experienţă în domeniul cinematografiei. A studiai apoi regia la Academia de Film şi Televiziune germană din Berlin (DFFB) şi a frecventat cursuri de scenografie cu Frank Daniel (Universitatea din California de Sud) şi Don Bohlinger (DFFB). Din 1997, lucrează ca regizor şi scenarist. Anna Justice was born in Muenster, Germany. After traveling to Los Angeles to complete her education as a translator, she remained there for five years and gained her first experience in the film business. She then studied filmmaking at the German Film & Television Academy Berlin (DFFB) and attended screenwriting courses with Frank Daniel (University of Southern California) and Don Bohlinger (DFFB). Since 1997, she has been working as a director and scriptwriter.

Gustav Mahler snatched Alma under the noses of Vienna’s artistic elite, but ten years of marriage and the death of one child have exacerbated the strains caused by the 19 year gap in their ages, and Mahler’s refusal to allow Alma to write music (“I need a wife, not a colleague”). While staying at a spa resort, Alma falls in love with Walter Gropius, five years her junior. Tormented, Mahler seeks advice from Sigmund Freud. The encounter of the two giants of music and psychoanalysis is bumpy, temperamental, and not without humor.

Percy Adlon este cel mai bine cunoscut pentru filmul său “ Bagdad Cafe”( “Out of Rosenheim”). S-a născut în Munich, 1 iunie 1935, şi a crescut în Ammerland/ Starnbergersee, în regiunile rurale bavareze. A studiat arta şi istoria teatrului şi literatura germană la Universitatea Munich’s Ludwig-Maximilian, a luat lecţii de actorie şi canto şi a fost membru al grupului studenţesc de teatru. Şi-a început cariera profesională ca actor, a fost interesat în munca la radio, a fost narator şi editor la o serie de literatură, prezentator şi actor în televiziune timp de 10 ani. Percy şi Eleonore Adlon au format compania lor de producţie de film, FILM GmbH, din 1978. Co-director Avishai Mekonen, then 10 years old, was among them. In this film, he breaks his 20-year silence about the brutal kidnapping he endured as a child in Sudan during his community’s exodus out of Africa. This life-defining event launches an inquiry into identity, leading him to African, Asian and Latino Jews in Israel and the U.S.

“Oraşul Pierdut” spune povestea cercetării obsesive a unui om în căutarea apropierii de tatăl decedat, prin dezvăluirea poveştii oraşului Trochenbrod. Întâi făcut cunoscut de Jonathan Safran Foer prin “Everything is Illuminated”, Trochenbrod a fost singurul oraş cu populaţia în toatalitate evreiască în afara Palestinei. Populaţia de 5000 de evrei a fost exterminată de nazişti, cu excepţia a 33 de orăşeni care au scăpat masacrului de acolo. “Lost Town” tells the story of one man’s obsessive search to get closer to his deceased father by uncovering the story of his family’s town of Trochenbrod. First made famous by Jonathan Safran Foer’s “Everything Is Illuminated”, Trochenbrod was the only all-Jewish town to ever exist outside of Palestine. Trochenbrod’s 5000 Jews were obliterated by the Nazis, except for 33 townspeople who escaped the massacre there. This personal search triggers a resurgence of interest in the town and reconnects the few remaining survivors who hadn’t seen each other in over 60 years. “Lost Town” utilizes contemporary documentary footage, original animation, and survivor testimonials to tell the story of how far one will go to claim their sense of identity.

Jeremy Goldscheider Richard Goldgewicht Jeremy Goldscheider began his career directing and producing music videos for artists that include Blink-182, Eagle Eye Cherry, and Leona Naess. Soon after, he began producing non-fiction/ documentary television for BBC, MTV, Animal Planet, NBC/Universal. In addition to his work in Television, Goldscheider has also worked with dozens of non-profit organizations (including ADL, The Jewish Federation, TreePeople, etc.) producing promotional and fundraising films. Most recently, Goldscheider has produced two feature films; “PABLO” (2012), an animated documentary narrated by Jeff Bridges (premiered at Rotterdam film festival) and “Lost Town” (2012), a film about the town of Trochenbrod. Richard Goldgewicht has directed a broad mix of films that range both in live action, animation, documentary and narrative. With a strong interest on international themes, Goldgewichts’ editorial and musical background have generated an eclectic mix of films from his award winning short Blue Rondo (2000), inspired by Dave Brubeck’s experimental Jazz track Blue Rondo a la Turk and his comical portrayal of the Middle-Eastern conflict in Tel Aviv (2004), to his feature debut “Pablo” (Rotterdam Film Festival Premiere, 2012). “Pablo” centers around Pablo Ferro’s contributions to the world of film title design and his mark on the 1960’s New York counterculture.In addition to “Lost Town” (2012), Richard is also finishing work on the feature length documentary “Gameplay” (2013), about the history and future of video games while developing a slate of narrative films including the sci-fi thriller “Send Her My Love”, the Spanish language ”Clandestino”, and “Futebol”, based on Alex Bellos’ book “Football, Brazilian Way of Life”, which he plans to film in Rio de Janeiro.

Reut Bortz a absolvit recent de la Academia de Artă şi Design Bezalel din Ierusalim, Israel. Filmul ei de absolvire “Stitches” a durat mai mult de un an şi jumătate pentru a fi finalizat şi tratează problema posibilităţii adaptării fiecărui copil la un model anume. “Definesc filmul ca fiind semi-autobiografic” spune Bortz. “Unele părţi sunt inspirate din viaţa mea, dar în principiu sunt inspirate din vieţile altor sute care simt că nu pot fi ei înşişi în propriile familii şi comunităţi.”

Reut Bortz recently graduated from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, Israel. Her graduation film “Stitches” took a year and a half to complete, and it deals “with the question of whether it is possible to adapt every child to one specific mold”. “I define the movie as semi–autobiographical,’ says Bortz. “In some parts it is based on my life, but mainly on the lives of hundreds of others who feel like they can’t be themselves among their own families and communities.”

There is a legend in the neighborhood of Albaicín (Granada), passed on from mothers to children for centuries. A strange old woman appears during the night and hidden in her orchard is a bewitched fig tree whose fruits are golden. Little Ariel learns this legend from her mother just before going to sleep and will live a dangerous adventure in her dreams.

She however, throws him down the drain and so he finds himself, contrary to his anti- political and anti-everything attitude, stuck on top of a tree overlooking his beloved’s apartment fearlessly leading an environmental battle against real estate sharks. For once in his life, he finds some comfort by staying put. He refuses to disembark even when the bulldozers charge in. Perhaps it’s because he’s had enough time on the road and finally understands there’s nowhere to run to and perhaps because he can’t remember what he’s doing up that tree in the first place. Aceste ghetouri au fost un teren fertil pentru naşterea unor skinheads evrei care se urau pe sine. “Pantera alba” este povestea lui Alex, un tânăr imigrant rus care se alătură acestei grupări de skinheads, condusă de fratele său mai mare. Întâlnirea neaşteptată cu David, un evreu marocan religios, îi dă lui Alex şansa că îşi urmeze visul de o viaţă de a deveni boxeur, ca şi tatăl său. Alex se trezeşte prins între cele două figure paterne – violentul frate mai mare şi noul său antrenor evreu – pentru ca în final să afle adevărul despre cei pe care îi admiră.

In the 1990’s a million former USSR Jews arrived in Israel. The immigrants were despised by the local population who feared their ‘invasion’. While many embraced the Israeli lifestyle, others chose to live in self-made Russian ghettos. These ghettos were a fertile ground for the creation of self-hating Jewish skinheads. ‘White Panther’ is the story of Alex, a young Russian immigrant who joins a skinheads’ gang, led by his older brother. An unexpected meeting with David, a religious Moroccan Jew, gives Alex a chance to pursue his longtime dream of becoming a boxer like his father. Alex finds himself torn between his two father figures - his violent older brother and his new Jewish trainer, only to find out the truth about those he so admires.

Născut şi crescut în Tiberias, Shemi Zarhin este un absolvent al Departamentului de Film şi Televiziune al Universităţii Tel-Aviv. Predă cursuri de regie şi scenaristică la Şcoala Sam Spiegel din Ierusalim. A scris scenarii pentru mai multe filme ( printre ele “Tel-Aviv Stories” şi “Family Secrets”) şi a regizat zeci de reclame şi episoade din seriale de televiziune. În 1996 a fost premiat cu premiul “Ministry of Arts and Culture for Filmmakers”. Primul film de lungmetraj al lui Zarhin, ca regizor şi scenarist, “Passover Fever” (“Leylasede”, 1995) a câştigat premiul pentru cel mai bun scenariu la Festivalul de Film din Montreal şi a participat la peste 200 de festivaluri din întreaga lume. Filmul său “Dangerous Acts” (“Mesukenet”, 1998) a câştigat şapte premii Israeli Academy Awards, printre ele şi pentru cel mai bun regizor. Filmul “Bonjour Monsieur Shlomi” (“Hakochavim Shel Shlomi”, 2003) a câştigat 20 de premii în festivaluri din întreaga lume. Born and raised in Tiberias, Shemi Zarhin is a graduate of The Film and Television department at Tel-Aviv University. He teaches filmmaking and scriptwriting courses at the Sam Spiegel School in Jerusalem. He has written scripts for several feature films (among them: `Tel-Aviv Stories’ and ‘Family Secrets’) and directed dozens of commercials and episodes of television series. In 1996 he was awarded the Ministry of Arts and Culture’s Prizes for Filmmakers. Zarhin’s first feature film as a director and scriptwriter, Passover Fever (‘Leylasede’, 1995) won the prize for best script at the Montreal World Film Festival and participated in over 200 festivals all over the world. Dar aceste poveşti despre Kalusz i-au umplut copilăria. Şi după ce tatăl său moare, Dichek se decide să-i caute casa în care a locuit. O întâlneşte pe Tanya, o tânără evreică, care cunoaşte foarte puţine despre istoria evreiască a oraşului, iar căutarea lui devine căutarea ei. O distribuţie de personaje comice dar şi tragice - un producător de bere, un rabin, fermieri ucrainieni şi copiii unui pescar - toţi contribuie la reconstituirea trecutului.

In this first person narrative, filmmaker Bernard Dichek explores the hometown in Poland that his father never returned to after surviving the war. But his stories about Kalusz filled his childhood. And after he died, Dichek decides to search for his house. He meets Tanya, a young Jewish woman who knows little about the town’s Jewish history, and his search becomes her search. A cast of comic and tragic characters –a beer production manager, a rabbi, Ukrainian farmers and a fisherman’s children –provide clues about the past.

Filmul ei “Blessings: Roommates in Jerusalem” urmăreşte două bătrâne cu dizabilităţi intelectuale în timp ce se pregătesc pentru Bat Mitzvah. Paula Weiman-Kelman is a Jerusalem based documentary filmmaker and a partner in Not-So-Simple Productions. For the “Eyes Wide Open”,a Not-So-Simple Production’s, Weiman-Kelman followed a wide variety of American Jews journeying to Israel. Weiman-Kelman’s previous films includ “ Rites of Passage: The Spiritual Journey of Alice Shalvi” which was broadcast in the United States as an ABC TV Network Special. Her film “Blessings: Roommates in Jerusalem” follows two older women with developmental disabilities as they prepare for their Bat Mitzvah. It premiered in Israel at the Jerusalem Cinematheque, in Europe at the Berlin Jewish Film Festival and in the United States at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival. Weiman-Kelman has traveled extensively documenting life around the world. She has filmed the Dalai Lama and the Pope visiting Israel, as well as countless young people preparing for their Bar Mitzvahs. Born in Philadelphia in 1953, WeimanKelman has lived in Israel since 1976. She worked as a curator of Jewish and Israeli Film at the Jerusalem Cinematheque from 1984-1994. She was a member of Kibbutz Gezer from 1977 - 1983. Weiman-Kelman is married to Rabbi Levi Weiman-Kelman and the mother of three grown children.

A documentary filming crew embarks on an incredible ghost chase, traveling along the Trans-Siberian rails, searching for Mishca, who fled to the Belarus forest - as a boy during the 2nd World War – where he spent three solitary years amidst a pack of wolves. During their quest, they reach some of the most godforsaken parts of the globe, encounter places and persons who seem to have materialized directly from pages of Gogol’s and Dostoyevsky’s Russia. No one really appreciates Kamel Nadjer, the young Bedouin security guard at the Be’er Sheba central bus station, neither his family, nor his Israeli colleagues. When the poor tin shacks he shares with his family in the desert are menaced by demolition orders, Kamel decides to take action. He will stage a bombing in the bus station and then prevent it, in order to establish himself as a hero, save his village, and win the admiration he so desires.

Deodată, a devenit eroul tuturor. Am fost mereu fascinat de cultura beduină şi acest film a reprezentat o oportunitate pentru mine pentru a mă adânci în această lume, pentru a învăţa despre tradiţia şi modul lor de viaţă cu scopul de a prezenta povestea lor lumii. The story is inspired by a true event: in 2005 a Bedouin security guard was seriously injured after preventing a bombing at Be’er Sheba’s central bus station. Suddenly, he was everybody’s darling, a hero. I was always fascinated by the Bedouin culture and this film was an opportunity for me to dive into the bedouins world, learn about their tradition and lifestyle in order to bring their story to the world.

Michal Aviad s-a născut în Ierusalim cu mama italiancă şi tatăl ungur. După terminarea liceului, a studiat literatura, filosofia şi cinematografia. În timpul anilor ‘80 a locuit în San Francisco, unde a început să regizeze filme şi unde a şi devenit mamă. Până la reîntoarcerea în Israel din 1991, a continuat să scrie, să regizeze şi să producă filme documentare premiate. Filmele ei analizează relaţiile complexe dintre problemele femeilor şi conflictul Palestinian- Israelian, militarism şi etnicitate. Aviad este membră a facultăţii Universitatea din Tel Aviv, departamentul de Film şi Televiziune.

Michal Aviad was born in Jerusalem to an Italian mother and a Hungarian father. After finishing high school, she studied Literature, Philosophy and Cinema. During the 1980’s she lived in San Francisco, where she started making films and became a mother. Since returning to Israel in 1991, she has continued to write, direct and produce award-winning documentary films. Her films examine the complex relationships between women’s issues and the Palestinian –Israeli conflict, militarism, and ethnicity. Aviad is a faculty member at Tel Aviv University’s Department of Film and Television.

Misha, în vârstă de 12 ani se documentează asupra călătoriei familiei cu ajutorul unei camere video. Experienţa imigrării deja traumatizantă capătă proporţii absurde, atunci când mătuşa familiei moare în avion chiar înainte de a ateriza pe pământul străbunilor lor. De acum, familia trebuie să treacă prin diferite etape de birocraţie cu un cadavru imigrant. Folosindu-se de formidabilul său talent comic, regizorul Leon Prudovsky, care a imigrat în Israel din URSS, se confruntă cu propriile sale traume ale imigrării.

The year is 1991. The beginning of the massive Jewish immigration wave from the USSR to Israel. 12 years old Misha is documenting his family’s journey on a homevideo camera. The already traumatic immigration experience is enhanced up to absurd proportions, when the family’s old aunt dies on the plane just before they reach the land of their ancestors. Now, the family will have to go through various levels of bureaucracy with an immigrating corpse. Using his great comic talent, director Leon Prudovsky, who immigrated to Israel from the USSR, is coping with his own immigration traumas.

Proiectul de diplomă, un scurtmetraj “Dark Night” a fost nominalizat la premiul Student Academy Award în 2005 şi a câştigat numeroase premii la festivaluri de film internaţionale prestigioase precum Festivalul de Film Internaţional din Veneţia, ediţia 62, Festivalul de Film din Ierusalim,din Beijing, din Palm Springs, New York, Bucureşti şi multe altele. În 2006 a regizat şi a fost co-scenarist la un film TV “Like a Fish out of Water” pentru Canal 2, câştigând numeroase premii TV şi fiind nominalizat la ISraeli TV Academy. În 2009 a regizat primul său film “ Five Hours from Paris”, selectat la Festivalul Internaţional de Film din Toronto şi câştigând la festivalurile Haifa, Napoli şi Nice Films. În 2010 a regizat un serial de 4 episoade Troyka, cu actori israelieni şi ruşi. Premiera ultimului său scurtmetraj a avut loc Festivalul Internaţional de Film Haifa.

Subtitrări / Subtitles: Română - Engleză / Romanian - English În mai 2004, o maşină blindată a Forţelor de Apărare Israeliene a fost distrusă în Fâşia Gaza, iar toţi soldaţii care se aflau la bord au fost omorâţi. La puţin timp după, câţiva soldaţi au fost chemaţi la faţa locului pentru a identifica rămăşiţele prietenilor lor. “Curcubeu” este povestea lui Michael, un comandat de detaşament care merge împreună cu soldaţii săi într-o casă palestiniană aflată lângă locul unde a fost distrusă maşina. Ordinele sale sunt de a securiza perimetrul şi de a apăra soldaţii care caută prin nisip pentru a identifica rămăşiţe ale prietenilor lor. Echipa lui Michael este însoţită de un fotograf militar, care în scurt timp devine o povară. Cu cât întârzie mai mult în casa palestiniană, cu atât mai complicată devine situaţia. Bazat pe fapte reale. In May 2004 an IDF armored personnel carrier was destroyed in Gaza Strip, and all the soldiers on board were killed. Shortly after, rescue soldiers were called to the scene to look for the remains of their friends. Rainbow is a story about Michael, a squad commander who leads his soldiers into a Palestinian house which is looking at the location of the destroyed carrier. His orders were to secure the parameter and defend the soldiers sorting through the sand in search of their friends remains. Michael’s team is accompanied by a military photographer who quickly becomes a burden, and the longer they stay in the Palestinian house, the more complicated the situation becomes. It is the summer of 1978, a month to go until the Camp David peace accords, but Michal is not worried by world affairs. Her 7 year old daughter Maya has yet to learn how to read and write and her teacher wants to hold her back a year. Michal rises to the occasion and vows that by the end of the summer Maya will read, write and move on to the next grade. But this summer is set to be full of surprises for the family. Michal’s father, Haim, who has been missing for twenty years, suddenly returns, and brings with him the family’s dark past and hidden secrets. By summer’s end Michal and her sister Naomi will have to deal with the past they have tried so hard to bury and the painful, yet liberating process will eventually lead them onto a new path.

Filmul “Bowing Gracefully” crează o călătorie prin ultimii 64 de ani şi urmăreşte activitatea parlamentului Israelian, cel care a fondat noul stat Israel. The movie “Bowing Gracefully” creates a journey through the past 64 years and follows central Israeli parliament who founded the newly born state of Israel. Many of the members of Israel’s first parliament fought each other while members of the Jewish underground movements, during the British mandates rule over the land of Israel. The movie includes original recordings, official records, photos and personal letters written by the members of Israel’s first Knesset. Family members tell personal stories of persons they knew well, the kind of people they were at home, the strong sense of duty, ideology and faith. The early days of the establishment the first Jewish state are shown including diverse characters, most of them immigrants. The film shows how they saw their duty, the agenda that set the unique character of the State and the disagreements that arose. The first days of the State of Israel receive a face and name, character and personal stories. The never seen before pictures, the never before heard stories of personal relationships, the medley of languages other than Hebrew, heard from the Knesset’s podium, and a torrid affair between two ministers who served during Israel’s first government.

Filmul spune povestea de viaţă a familiei Shilansky, mai precis a celor patru fraţi care s-au protejat unul pe altul în ghetoul lituanian, care au dezvoltat o relaţie unică de-a lungul anilor i care au murit cu toţii în decursul unei luni. Filmul ilustrează povestea lui Dov Shilansky şi a celor trei fraţi ai săi care au supravieţuit împreună Holocaustului, s-au înrolat în Irgun, au imigrat în Israel la bordul navei Altalena şi şi-au construit cămine în Israel. Shilansky, fost preşedinte al Knesset, şi-a pierdut fiul pe când acesta era în armată, însă a reuşit să păstreze o viziune optimistă şi unică asupra vieţii. Rudele sale spun povestea unei familii care a reuşit să păstreze bucuria vieţii, în ciuda evenimentelor tragice prin care au trecut. În film, membrii familiei povestesc despre Holocaust, despre pierderi grele şi despre imagini filmate la evenimente ale familiei. Faptul că fraţii au reuşit să supravieţuiascăHolocaustului împreună i-a ajutat să-şi formeze o relaţie unică. Această relaţie strânsă a dăinuit până la finalul vieţii lor – trei dintre cei patru fraţi au murit în decursul unei luni, fără să ştie unii de moartea celorlalţi. The life story of the Shilansky family tells the story of four siblings who protected each other in the Lithuanian ghetto, developed a close and unique relationship over the years, and passed away in the span of one month. The movie illustrates the family story of Dov Shilansky, with its four siblings, who together survived the Holocaust, joined the Irgun, immigrated to Israel on the Altalena ship, and built homes in Israel. Shilansky, a former Chairman of the Knesset, lost his son in the military, but was able to keep a unique optimistic view of life. Family members tell the story of a family that, against all odds, preserved the joy of life. In the film, family members tell of the holocaust, of bereavement, and share home videos from family events. The fact that the siblings survived the holocaust together made their relationship unique and the most important thing in their lives. This unique relationship lasted until their final days - three of the four siblings passed away within a month, without knowing of the others’ deaths. The brother that survived, Arie, tells openly of mourning the deaths of all three siblings. Arie recently celebrated his 83 rd birthday, is married happily to Ruth and is a father of three and grandfather, but he says he feels alone after the loss of his siblings. Family members recount the family atmosphere, celebrations and happiness, and modesty adopted as a way of life. This is a film that begins with the holocaust, and ends with the revival of the Jewish people.

The Territory is an intimate look into the lives of Israelis from the former Soviet Union who made their new home in the West Bank settlements. While some residents move to the settlements looking for cheaper housing, others are motivated by Zionist ideology; and all are influenced by their past experience of being an oppressed minority in the Soviet Union. The film is an exploration of questions of identity, religion and conflict.

Ameer Abu Ria este pe cale să se înroleze în armată. Spre deosebire de majoritatea băieţilor de 18 ani din Israel, pentru care serviciul militar este obligatoriu, Ameer este scutit deoarece se bănuieşte că înrolarea sa ar putea periclita securitatea Israelului. He believes that his induction is the way to equality, he believes this is the way to belong to the state he lives in, the state he wants to love. He is considered an enemy, a fifth column in the eyes of Israeli Jews, and a traitor of the worst kind in the eyes of Arab citizens; the kind who turns against his brothers. All alone, Ameer sets out on a journey to civic and self-definition, while carefully navigating the thin line between Jewish and Arab societies. Ameer, an eternal optimist, wishes to be both a proud Arab and an enthusiastic Israeli, while his only enemy is reality.

Profiling Hassidic punk rockers, Yiddish street performers, African-American Jewish activists and more, Punk Jews explores an emerging movement of provocateurs and committed Jews who are asking, each in his or her own way, what it means to be Jewish in the 21st century.
