One of our favorite females from Form to Function 2008 was BSG Tillie 724, a full sister to this year’s Lot 1 bull. Just like 724, we think Dalton is ahead of his time. Dalton has so many traits we desire in the present day Shorthorn. He is a moderate framed, powerfully ribbed bull with tons of natural thickness and fleshing ability, plus he holds an 82 pound actual birthweight coupled with a birthweight EPD that easily beats the breed average. Dalton looks like a real beef bull and he is just the kind of Shorthorn sire that can go to work in any environment. We can’t wait to visit his new home to see his daughters down the road. If the theory that the most masculine bulls make the most maternal cows is true, then Dalton’s female progeny are sure to be impressive. We believe in Dalton’s potential so much, that we are retaining a 1/3 semen interest for in-herd use. Partner with BSG on a truly powerful herdsire prospect. S.C. 38 cm THF/PHAF Bowman Superior Genetics will retain one-third semen interest on Lot 1 for in-herd use only. Consignor: Bowman Superior Genetics, Greens Fork, Ind.

It’s time for the Most Unique Shorthorn Event of the Season; and is it ever a great time to be involved in Shorthorn production. Given the occurrences in the purebred business over the past 12 months, there has possibly never been a time of greater opportunity or greater importance for breeders of Shorthorn cattle. Those who can produce practical, functional cattle that work in the real world beef industry can expect to realize greater demand than ever before. More and more Shorthorn breeders are looking for the cattle that can put the basics back into their cowherd. They need cattle with outcross pedigrees that are practical for production - low maintenance, moderate sized cows with good udders, sound feet and legs and better than average performance. The Form to Function sale represents the production of three Shorthorn outfits that all produce cattle to meet these needs. The Form to Function breeders have stepped up the quality for this years sale. They didn’t just open the gate to the keeper pen, they took it off the hinges! There will be no deeper offering of bred heifers, of any breed, anywhere in the country this fall. We look forward to presenting these cattle for your evaluation and hope that you will try one on for size. These cattle are bred to work for you and they have the Form to Function. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the offering or if I may be of any assistance to you prior to the sale. Sincerely, B.J. Eick, Sale Manager 8619 W. Bred 5/15 to NPS Governor – Safe in Calf – Due 2/21/10 P.E. to NPS Governor 5/12 – 6/14 and Jake’s Tabasco 6/15 – 7/15 The form to function – 810’s got it. When we think about all of the things we would like to have in a Form to Function female, this is it. BSG Robin 810 had a lot of fans at last year’s sale, where she made her F2F debut at the side of her donor dam, BSG Robin 429. 810 is not only fabulously constructed in her phenotype, but her pedigree is well built too. The Robin line is time tested and BSG Robin 429 is proving to be a tremendously valuable donor. The true success of a great cow family is not necessarily based on the number of banners it hangs, but on the ability to create highly productive and highly profitable beef cattle generation after generation. We promised you that our best would always be offered in Form to Function. You’ll have no doubt that we’re telling the truth after you see the Lot 2 female. Her full sister sold to WHR Shorthorns in last year’s sale and the Governor heifer calf she was carrying went straight to the replacement pen. THF/PHAF Bowman Superior Genetics retains the right to one successful flush (minimum of six transferable embryos) on Lot 2. Consignor: Bowman Superior Genetics, Greens Fork, Ind.

P.E. to NPS Governor 5/12 – 6/14 and Jake’s Tabasco 6/15 – 7/15 Safe in Calf – Too Close to Call - Due Approx. 3/25 On paper, Miss V8 Dream of Me 822J, a Trump out of Double Stuff’s dam, is not the kind of lead cow you’d expect to find at the Bowman homestead. But when you study her flawless structure, tremendous natural body and the predictability of her offspring, you know exactly why she’s here. The Dream of Me’s are proving to be incredibly potent, always passing on the body shape, power and tremendous good looks they have become famous for producing. BSG Dream of Me 801 has been a standout since birth. Her dam is a direct Miss V8 Dream of Me 822J – Granddam of Lot 3 daughter of Dream of Me 822J by Byland Mission. 801 has the soundness, levelness of hip and body mass you expect from the Dream of Me family, matched with miles of eye appeal and an incredibly docile nature. The Dream of Me x 844 combination has been an extremely fruitful mating. Last year’s Lot 13A heifer, purchased by Cates Farms, was a direct result of the Dream of Me x 844 mating and a ¾ sister to 801. 801 has an impressive full brother that is going to spend some more time at BSG. Another hit from 3904! 849’s full sister was a highlight in the 2008 Form to Function sale and we are certain she will be a crowd pleaser as well. Her dam, 3904, was purchased from WHR Shorthorns and is the top pick of many who visit the BSG cowherd. She is simply massive in her lower third, has the same body condition score every month of the year and when she calves, her udder is nearly perfect in its attachments with her teats short and beautifully placed. We could not feel more strongly about all the positives this cow has to offer.

Before she became a household name, the BSG crew was fortunate enough to partner with Cates Farms on two flushes of SS Augusta Pride 3127. At the time, Trump was just hitting stride and we knew it would be a fantastic mating. A few years later this pairing resulted in BSG Augusta Pride 213, the donor dam of Lot 5 and maybe the longest bodied, thickest stifled cow in the BSG outfit.

849 is extra deep bodied and extremely flexible with fantastic design and balance. Add DFS Red Rider 844 to the Dace package and couple it with a Milk EPD that ranks in the top 10% of the Shorthorn breed and a better than average BW number and you have maternal mastery at it’s finest. Don’t miss this heifer. TH Carrier/PHAF Consignor: Bowman Superior Genetics, Greens Fork, Ind. and Hogle Farms, Perrington, Mich.

Daughters of Jake’s Proud Jazz

In the purebred livestock industry, there is a continual search for the next great sire that will stamp their progeny with positives and mark the breed for generations to come. Though the search stretches far and wide, these sires do not come around very often. Despite the rarity, Jake’s Proud Jazz 266L has most certainly earned his place on the sire wall of fame. So few times in history is a bull found that meets the criteria of so many Shorthorn breeders, from so many different production avenues. Jake’s Proud Jazz has helped breeders moderate their mature cow size to a more efficient and productive level and has legitimately lowered birthweights in a single generation, all while increasing muscle mass and internal capacity. Few sires in the history of the breed have generated as much good in an outcross package as Jake’s Proud Jazz. Jake’s Proud Jazz is very important to this sale offering, not only is he the sire or service sire of several lots, but also his genetics hold a deep influence in the service sires represented in Form to Function 2009. Jake’s Proud Jazz 266L – Sire of lots 8 – 10 – Service sire to Lot 38 JSF Jazz 34S, the first great and most proven son of Jake’s Proud Jazz, owned by Shady Maple Farms and Galbreath Farms, is quickly becoming known for producing fabulous females and super stout bulls. FSF Proud Jazz, a full brother to Jake’s Proud Jazz, is the service sire to the entire Byland offering. Every heifer at the Byland place was bred to FSF Proud Jazz this fall. Jake’s Tabasco is by Ohlde’s top son of Proud Jazz and Jake’s Jazzy 250J, the own dam of Jake’s Proud Jazz.

GB Dew’s Irish Star is absolutely the easiest fleshing female to ever walk the pastures at Shady Maple Farms. Her extreme depth of body and stoutness of structure make her one of the most talked about cows in the SMF herd. Her first three natural calves have recorded birthweights of 83, 73 and 69 pounds, while her E.T. calves average in the low 80’s. Her EPD’s for Weaning Weight and Yearling Weight rank in the top 1% of the entire Shorthorn breed. Her natural calf at side, pictured here and on display sale day, is by JSF Jazz 34S and was sold to Phillips Ranch, Texas, as a herd bull prospect at less than 30 days of age.

Lot 11C Donor – GB Dew’s Irish Star

GB Dew’s Irish Star is extreme from so many angles - growth, fleshing ease, body, bone and power yet consistently dams calves with more than acceptable actual birthweights. Are you ready for a change? This one can do it. THF/PHAF Open and ready to flush

Selling 5 embryos – GCC Fool Pride 10 x HD Bloodstone 603 Shady Maple Farms elected to add cow power in 2006 by finding and purchasing the most powerful bred heifer to sell that year. An effort to scour the country for their next female ended a few hours from home in Waynesville, Ohio, where they purchased GCC Fool Pride 10 as one of the high selling lots in Greenhorn’s 2006 sale. This white Shorthorn matron was named Grand Champion at the 2006 Ohio State Fair and went on to earn reserve champion honors in her division at the National Western Stock Show, where she was a definite crowd favorite. Rasor and Sullivan are only two among the host of Shorthorn breeding programs to bank genetics on Fool Pride 10 so far. She has easily proved her donor status. Her calves by JSF Navigator have been awesome. A daughter by RB Eagle 255 made the replacement pen as soon as she hit the ground in Martinsville. Bred 7/7 to Jake’s Tabasco - P.E. to Jake’s Tabasco 5/12 – 7/15 Take a look at 834 from all angles. Performance, pedigree, phenotype, cow family, you name it, she is awesome. The Rosewood Sylvia’s are one of our favorite cow families Lot 17 – BSG Sylvia 834 at BSG. 834’s maternal great-granddam is still eating grass and raising calves at nearly 20 years of age. The Sylvia on the bottom side of this pedigree is a daughter of BSG Copyright RD X, a direct son of Rodeo Drive. In the time of Rodeo Drive, there was always a push to find a deeper sided, more moderate framed son that would improve efficiency. Years later, two sons emerged. Mel-Bar Rodeo Drive 347 and SR Red Riders Drive. We feel if Copyright would have had the opportunity to sire more cattle, he would rank right among these two breed greats.

This red-hided female is tremendously big volumed with tons of depth and adds a balanced EPD profile with exceptional thickness, performance, femininity and a great look. Bred 5/24 to FSF Proud Jazz – Safe in Calf – Due 3/2/10 Claiming the second lowest actual birthweight in the Byland offering, the Lot 29 heifer packs as much style and real world production into one package as any beef animal we’ve seen. Her structure and balance are second to none and she matches it perfectly with massive volume, depth, stoutness and substance. If one could stay at Byland, this may be their pick. 8E52 by RB Eagle 226 stems from a fantastic cow family. Her granddam, Byland Ellen 2TP82, is a massive, solid red daughter of CF Trump the Byland firm has flushed several times. This mating to FSF Proud Jazz will make cattle that are right on track for real world beef production without sacrificing even an ounce of style. Bred 6/6 to FSF Proud Jazz – Safe in Calf – Due 3/15/10 Byland Ellen 8RW22 is a long spined, level made, performance female and a granddaughter of Byland’s Ellen donor by Mel-Bar Rodeo Drive 347.

Bred 5/21 to FSF Proud Jazz – Safe in Calf – Due 2/27/10 Masterfully constructed. That may be the best way to describe the fastest growing heifer of the Byland group. Maternal in her look, the Lot 31 female handles herself well on paper and in the performance pen. While her birthweight EPD remains far better than breed average, her actual growth surpassed all of her contemporaries and is backed by EPD’s ranking in the number two percentile of the Shorthorn breed for both weaning and yearling weights.

8RW22 is packed with performance and maternal traits. Her EPD’s for weaning and yearling weights both exceed the mark for a ranking in the top 1% of all Shorthorn records. Her mating to FSF Proud Jazz 855 will land right on the mark. THF/PHAF Consignor: Byland Polled Shorthorns, Loudonville, Ohio

We practically had to pry this one out of Martinsville. SMF Pansy JZ E10U is a half sister to SMF’s high selling bred in last year’s sale. E10U is from the Pansy family. This is the largest cow family at Shady Maple Farms, and rightfully so. The Pansy’s are all sound from the ground up, flesh well and have impeccable udders. They produce cattle with substance and muscle every time, just like this heifer. Huberdale HCC Pansy 43E, the maternal great-grandmother of lot 39, is one of SMF’s most popular donors and she’s still rocking out hits at 15 years of age. E10U will work with a variety of matings. She is one of the only females in the offering carrying the service of Dover, one of the most impressive beef bulls you’ll find of any breed. Unfortunately, Dover’s semen production has been limited due to the rough North Dakota winter last year. This may be one of your only opportunities to access his genetics! She’ll be fun to work with! THF/PHAF Consignor: Shady Maple Farms, Martinsville, Ind. & Galbreath Farms, Enderlin, N.D.

Lot 48 is your only chance at a Durham Red in Form to Function 2009 and one of only two opportunities to attain a daughter of 34S. The 34S x Red Angus females are impressive. Broody, and big volumed – some of the most cowy looking females on the farm. THF/PHAF Consignor: Shady Maple Farms, Martinsville, Ind. & Galbreath Farms, Enderlin, N.D.

Bred 5/16 to Jake’s Tabasco – Safe in Calf – Due 2/22/10 P.E. to Jake’s Tabasco 5/12 – 7/15 The ShorthornPlus and Durham Red programs are growing everyday for the American Shorthorn Association. We have dipped into that a little here at BSG and like what we see. It seems that every week we hear news about how the Shorthorn cross cattle are gaining steam around the country as more and more cattlemen pursue maternal heterosis and lose their color blindness. Black Stuff was developed by using one of most used Shorthorn bulls of all time with a super gentle purebred Angus cow we bought from our friend and mentor, Bill Burris. Proof of the power of the Shorthorn Cross! TH Pending/PHA Pending Consignor: Bowman Superior Genetics, Greens Fork, Ind.
