While these categories are not meant to be considered exhaustive, and are subject to constant debate, participation in the arts and cultural activities is observed on these parameters. How do you think the Arts are received in Malta and which art forms do you feel attract local audiences the most? Are these dissimilar to international audiences?
Yes, Valletta 2018 provided platforms which may have otherwise been difficult to have. These allowed for experimentation and collaboration between artists to take place; as seen especially in the activities that involved specific local communities, such as Darba Waħda and Ġewwa Barra, and international and Malta based artists such as the exhibition Dal-Baħar Madwarha and the Gozo Artist-in-Residency Programme. I would say that these activities are more likely to leave an impact on their participants and artists than the mega events that involve more spectacle and temporary entertainment, despite these having their own merit. However, when focusing on the long-term objectives of the European Capital of Culture, one would have to take into consideration the communal changes that are occurring inside and outside Valletta, and not solely attendance. Such changes are linked with infrastructural ones occurring in the past six years

These extraordinary little creatures are like swimming slugs (they are actually ‘soft-bodied, marine gastropod molluscs’) and Malta has several different species. Their shockingly bright colours are a treat to see in the water. Nudibranchs get their name from their naked gills, which stick right out of their bodies. ome people having conventional dentures often don't wear them, as they don't stay in place when in use or may even cause pain due to movement on chewing. The use of dental implants to stabilize dentures has proven to be a very successful treatment modality for many people worldwide. The number continues to grow as word spreads about the effectiveness and long-term durability of the treatment. In fact, it has been reported that dental implants have the highest success rate of any implanted surgical device in the body. PROBLEMS WITH LOOSE DENTURES
There are still millions of people around the world who are missing enough teeth to require the use of a denture. Many of them have problems in keeping their dentures secure, particularly in the lower jaw. The increase in mobility of the lower jaw denture is due to the fact that unlike the hard palate in the upper jaw, the lower jaw has less surface area and therefore less support and retention. The lower denture also has a tendency to be displaced by the tongue on talking and chewing. On the other hand the disadvantage of the upper denture is the middle plate, which covers the palate reducing taste and affecting speech. Patients with a strong gag reflex cannot tolerate any palatal coverage of the denture further reducing the ability of the denture to stay in place! “No matter how good your dentures are you will still be subjected to a reduced

If you weren’t an ABBA fan before, there’s a big chance you are one now, thanks to the release of the second Mamma Mia film, Here We Go Again, earlier this year, which surely brought in a new generation of fans to add to the millions out there. Formed in Stockholm in 1972, ABBA became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music. Their music has an immense catch appeal to it and a definite timelessness. It comes as no surprise that there are some 40 tribute bands in the UK alone, with scores more across the EU. But thanks to a mix of quality, attention to detail and hard work, tribute band Revival has been recognised as the official No 1 ABBA Tribute Band by the Agents Association of Great Britain for the past five years. John Reilly’s earliest memory of the band was when he was around four years old and they were on TV. “I remember being fixated with the guy with the beard,” he recalls, referring to Benny Andersson. “Something must have taken root in my mind because that’s who I perform as on stage today. The music of ABBA has been a constant in my life.”
Together with his now wife Lisa, he founded the band in 2007. Lisa actually plays Anni-Frid Lyngstad (the brunette) and they got together after they started the band. Exactly the same as the real Benny and Frida. The four members, who are all established musicians in their own right, met each other along the gigging circuit with different bands, sometimes playing together, and eventually they decided to all get together and “do the ABBA thing”. They confide how they are all big fans of ABBA, even more so after being in the band for so long. Because they have been doing it for so long now, John admits the mannerisms and stage personas they developed have become natural to them. Revival has a number of successes to their name. They were the headline act for tribute festivals GlastonBudget and Tribfest, featured in a BBC documentary about tribute bands and performed to some 300,000 people at the St Matthews Street Festival in Liverpool. This, reminisces John, was an unforgettable experience: “There’s a section in the show where we get the audience to sing back Dancing Queen to us, just with piano accompaniment. Hearing over a

One year after a show a lovely couple who live opposite the rooftop gardens in an apartment, came over to us and introduced us to their new baby. They said they had to come and see us this year as last year they actually conceived their baby whilst listening to our show from their apartment. That’s the power of ABBA’s music.”
Indeed, the band have something of a following in Malta too and their show this month will be their fourth on the island. “We love Malta – it’s such a beautiful country,” they all agree, adding how they have made many friends here and always keep in touch. Malta is also the place in which they have one of their best stage memories: playing on Independence Day at The Granaries, Floriana. “We didn’t realise until 10 minutes before we went on stage that the entire show was being televised to the whole of Malta.” Revival will be performing at Gianpula Main Room, on November 9, in aid of the Save Valletta’s Skyline appeal. Who knows what memories await them then?

- Beads of sweat dribbled down his youthful, unwrinkled forehead as he peered through a gap in the bastion’s fortifications. Down below, small skirmishes broke up and ended as scattered groups of men from both sides clashed in weary bloody-mindedness. A stray arrow would occasionally arc up and over the flashes of steel and shambling banners of red, white, and yellow. The hopeless cries of the tired and the injured accompanied plumes of black smoke that dotted the horizon. So this was war, he thought to himself. At that moment, there was a sound like a cannonball striking wet sand and an area to the right of the young soldier’s vision became a thick cloud of gently-settling dust. One of the enemy’s trenches appeared to have been the target of lucky cannon-fire. The patriotic grin that had begun to stretch across his face was swallowed in fear as screams of pain and loss reached his ears from that God-forsaken trench. He crossed himself and said a prayer for the pagans. Regarded as one of the most brutal confrontations of the 16th century, the Siege of Malta was a bloody conflict between the armies of the Ottoman Empire and the combined efforts of the Knights Hospitaller and the Maltese people. The resulting defeat of the Ottoman army marked a moment of singular triumph in Maltese history and halted the insurmountable advance of their army across the Mediterranean Sea. The strength of the strategic location of the Maltese islands lent itself to the forces of the Knights of St. John, who came to occupy Malta after their defeat at, and resulting expulsion from, Rhodes by the Ottoman Empire. After five years of preparation, the long-time enemies met again on the beaches of the Malta to soak the sand with their sweat and blood. Following a successful anchoring close to Fort St Elmo, the massive army of 40,000 troops and 180 naval vessels were ready to lay siege to Malta. With brilliant military foresight, the Grand Master of the Knights, Jean de Valette, had gambled on St Elmo being the first target of the Ottomans and had fortified the battlements with heavy artillery. This, in turn, delayed the advance of the Ottoman army by several weeks and resulted in the death of Admiral Dragut Reis, a key threat to the Christian nations of the central Mediterranean. After a series of costly attacks by the Ottoman army and the landing of a Christian relief force in the north of the island, Grand Vizier Mustafa Pasha ordered a retreat. Less than half of the Ottomans actually managed to flee the Maltese islands alive. This resulted in one of the worst and most humiliating defeats of the Ottoman Empire and evoked hope in Christian Europe that the Turkish forces were not as invincible as they had once thought.
THE DEATH OF DRAGUT WORDS AND IMAGE HERITAGE MALTA
The Death of Dragut was painted and signed by Giuzeppe Cali in 1867, and it depicts the death of the Ottoman leader, Dragut, during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. It evokes the work of the French Romantic painter Eugene Delacriox (1798 – 1863), and at the time, it was considered to bear a patriotic theme. This painting which is considered as one of Cali’s best works, was originally placed in the Palace Armoury, Valletta. During the last months, the Death of Dragut underwent conservation and restoration interventions. By time, this large format canvas suffered from deformations, and consequently, instability of the paint layer. The old varnish layer was removed as it had yellowed considerably and hence was obscuring the true, bright colours of the painting. Now, it is ready to go on display in the new museum MUŻA.

He is happy to answer any questions I have and sometimes sporadically spills a bit of fiction or non-fiction about his life and work. At this hour, his bakery is less about the baker and more about the people. A tall man bustles in, his van left running outside, as he places an empty tray on the table and loads it with fresh bread. He smiles curiously at me and hurries off to continue his delivery of daily bread. “That’s my son,” says Joe “Thank God for his help around here… I’m not what I used to be you know.” A small man with a big personality bursts into the room, cutting another chat short. He’s here to pick up his lunch – half a head of pork with baked potatoes. Joe’s oven is also used by locals to cook their home-prepared dishes, for the bargain price of a euro. But the pork is not yet ready, he must sit patiently and wait a while longer, happy to join the ongoing conversation, answering more questions, with more anecdotes. A small woman announces herself, asking about her pudding and telling me of her younger years working in a bakery, whilst another local simply strolls up to the shop’s doorway to lean against it and watch life pass by. Everyone speaks at once, everyone tells you their story, everyone is connected to this man and his bakery. All of today’s bread has been delivered, dishes have been picked up and it is time to call it a day. “I’ll see you down at the bar for a whiskey later,” shouts the half head of pork. I choose a loaf, pay its humble price and bid farewell to Joe and his bakery, not to mention Jesus, Mary and Elvis on the wall. The loaf is still warm and all I want to do is drizzle olive oil, smear tomato paste all over it, and eat it with olives, capers, sun-dried tomatoes, local cheese and fresh basil. These are the ingredients that go with your Maltese bread, but it’s up to your taste and character to put them together. Just remember, “il-ftira sħuna tajba” (you’re going to have to look that one up).

It was 1945 and little Jack lived in a tiny 2 bedroom townhouse in one of the largest cities in Malta, Ħal Qormi. He lived there with his mother, grandparents and 3 siblings which made it quite cramped at times but Jack didn’t mind - he understood that money was tight - and after losing his dad 5 years prior he knew the only way they would survive would be to move in with his grandparents. Every morning, Jack woke to the smell of freshly baked bread coming from the bakery next door. Though this was not just any old bakery - this was Jack’s grandfather’s bakery. Nannu Ġużi was the best bread maker in town and he was also Jack’s hero. Everyday after school he would run to the shop, sit on his favourite chair and watch his grandfather knead the dough that would eventually become a traditional Maltese loaf. He loved nothing more than swivelling on his stool, hearing the old wood oven crackling, smelling the sweet yet slightly burnt smell of the Maltese loaf baking while watching Nannu Ġużi add the precious ingredients to his famous recipe. Cleaning up was his second favourite thing, this meant sweeping and dusting all the flour off the surfaces which made the whole bakery turn a slight shade of white as if snow were falling all around him. When Jack was exactly 8 years, 3 months and 27 days old he got to make his very own loaf. Adding each ingredient carefully, kneading the dough gently and finally placing it in the oven to crisp up. Once it was done he let it cool but not for too long, Maltese bread is best served warm after all. He ripped it apart with his tiny hands, added a scraping of butter which quickly melted as soon as it hit the soft, fluffy crumb and held it out to his mentor. Nannu Ġużi’s ritual was to first squeeze the bread to check the texture as the centre retracted and quickly sprang back up. He’d then smell the freshly baked loaf and finally, but most importantly, taste the bread. His eyes widened as he placed the crispy slice into his mouth. As the bread touched his lips; his eyes widened. ‘Son, this is the finest loaf I have ever tasted. You are going to be the best baker in Malta and have tons of people flocking to buy your bread.’ And with those words, Jack’s future was defined. His bread was ever the finest, his store not left a minute in peace and as he closed the bakery doors after a long day’s work, he’d watch the flour land on every surface like snow falling from the skies.

L
ike most of the histories of the Maltese islands, the story of music in Malta is one that is in separable from its geography. The Mediterranean has been a melting pot for artistic expression for thousands of years, and in the process of moulding and shaping our identity, the archipelago situated bang in the middle of the Mediterranean, has absorbed various influences and ideas from the diverse cultures bordering it. Music especially, has always possessed the power to hold, transmit and communicate the language of culture, but also allow for the remembering and reconnecting with it. Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti’s next major project delves deep into the story and development of music and sound in Malta via the colourful influences of the Mediterranean basin. The project titled Music in Malta – From Prehistory to Vinyl will comprise of a major exhibition as well as a full programme of performances by local and international acts. The exhibition itself will feature a display of musical instruments and artefacts sourced from Maltese private and public collections. Sound itself will be the main exhibit as well as the narrator to this story. So what kind of sounds are we expecting to experience and what kind of story will they sing? The exhibition will begin with the soundscape of our early ancestors, one that invites you to imagine and visualise what went
on within the hilltop temples and the subterranean hypogeum; the singing, chanting, dancing and clapping, the scraping of bones, the pounding of stones and the blowing of horns and conches. Marine shells are, in fact, among some of the most ancient of sound producers; natural trumpets. They had various uses, ranging from sending messages and signals, to something more sacred and ritualistic and can be found to serve a practical use in some places in the world even today. However, as time moved forward so did the people, and the increased movement around the Mediterranean saw the expanding dominating powers like the Romans, Byzantines and North Africans, colonise Malta, leaving it with a melodic mixture of shared musical knowledge, artefacts and instruments. With all these influences, of course, came religion. The spread of Christianity in Malta carried with it sacred songs and dedicated musicians that travelled long distances. Some of the earliest written music found in Malta dates to the first half of the twelfth century, and the main instrument of this period was the organ. Let us now imagine the sound of singing monks, the ringing of bells, and the tall pipes of the organ allowing it’s sound to reach heavenly heights. Outside the church and back on the streets, the exhibition will continue to narrate the sounds of folk music and those traditional instruments that were crafted locally from materials easily available

around the islands. This is the music of the people and the sounds are vast and various; horns, flutes, rattles and bells, whistles and wooden stringed instruments, that were given special importance particularly in the accompaniment of a traditional song (għana) and dance. This was also a world of superstition and magic, and particular sounds were considered to be endowed with protective powers. With the arrival of the beloved Knights, and especially with the building of the city of Valletta after the Siege of 1565, Malta’s cultural life exploded. Music became more and more sophisticated; musicians travelled to further their studies abroad, instruments were imported onto the island while others, such as lutes, guitars and violins were locally made. The Order of St John also brought with them an influx of brass instruments and drums which could be heard in daily outdoor ceremonies. When Malta eventually became a British colony in the early nineteenth century, large regimental bands were introduced and heard regularly. Band clubs were readily embraced into local culture and
quickly flourished from village to village throughout Malta and Gozo. Woodwind, brass, percussion and sometimes string too, are the sounds of this mobile orchestra that parades and marches through the streets, even today. And with that, we arrive to the crispy crackle of your grandfather’s record player as he gently lays down the needle onto the thread of a vinyl record. This story of sound will end here, with the beginning of recorded music, when it became more universal than it ever was before. But if you think our story begins and ends within the space of an exhibition then you are mistaken, for we have a whole programme of performances that will see local acts as well as music from Puglia, Morocco and other countries in and around the basin, travel to our shores. These performances will continue to aid the narration of the wonderfully intricate story of the music created and enjoyed by the Maltese throughout their history, and will demonstrate how Malta’s traditional instruments and sounds fit right into this musical journey through the Mediterranean.

Malta is the undisputed European capital of iGaming. Since 2004, when the Maltese government passed legislation paving the way towards an open, yet regulated, iGaming industry on the island, the market has seen rapid growth with Malta dutifully claiming its stake at the centre of European iGaming. The swift uptake of gaming companies to Malta has seen unprecedented change to the archipelago in the intermittent years and, understandably, other countries have reacted to Malta’s growth by bringing in their own legislation. And yet, the European iGaming crown remains Malta’s to lose, a scenario which is unlikely to happen anytime soon. From Strength to Strength The importance of iGaming to
Malta cannot be understated, with approximately 12% of the country’s GDP coming from the industry. But this does not begin to tell the true nature of iGaming’s importance to Malta and vice-versa. Malta was, after all, the first EU nation to enact comprehensive iGaming legislation and in doing so transformed its economy. But the relationship is symbiotic and it continues to go from strength to strength. A Bright Future For iGaming companies themselves, the draw is clear. It is the ease of which business is done in Malta and the regulatory framework that has been built to aid, not hinder, companies that means that Malta is the ideal staging ground for growth.
This, coupled with the already established network of expertise not only within iGaming but also from the support network such as lawyers and advocates, accountants, investors and other corporate service structures makes Malta a fruitful location to thrive in. Of course, this means competition within the industry is high and the market is continually evolving with new jurisdictions (such as Romania in 2016 and Sweden this year) opening up or reregulating all the time. VALLETTA 2018 NOVEMBER HIGHLIGHTS

lthough the year is winding down, the Valletta 2018 Cultural Programme is still in full swing - and the month of November brings with it a multitude of cultural and artistic activities and events for all to enjoy.
A contemporary art exhibition being held at various heritage sites around Malta and Gozo opened on the 13th October. Curated by Rosa Martinez, one of the first female directors of the Venice Biennale in 2005, Constellation Malta is an experimental
and multi-disciplinary project aiming to generate dialogue about contemporary art and popular culture. Just as celestial constellations were shaped to provide orientation, the artistic interventions in Constellation Malta will propose points, routes and new itineraries to navigate the local crossover of social, political, economic and artistic contexts. The exhibition runs until the 9th December, and a ticket grants you entry to various heritage sites around the islands.

Bodies in Urban Spaces brings an exciting performance trail that raises awareness about the way we interact with public space through a unique kind of urban intervention. Performance artists will create 'body sculptures' in unexpected places throughout the city. The interventions themselves are temporary, but the imprint left on memory persists, establishing a stronger relationship between citizens and their neighbourhoods. Bodies in Urban Spaces will be taking place in Mellieħa on the 10th and 11th of this month. Between the 16th and 25th November, children and young people are in for a treat. The yearly ŻiguŻajg Festival is an annual international arts festival that puts the creative arts for children and young people at the heart of Malta’s cultural landscape. The programme showcases an enticing selection of newly devised work, together with renowned international productions. The Malta Book Festival, an annual cultural event, celebrates the wonder of books through a wide programme of family-friendly activities and also offers extensive networking opportunities for professionals in the book world. Held in what used to be the old hospital, the Sacra Infermeria (now known as the Mediterranean Conference Centre) between the 7th and 11th November, book sellers and authors gather under one roof in the largest and most extensive celebration of book culture in Malta. The Utopian Nights series concludes with The Commons, which summons the public to collectively reclaim The Commons. Join international and local speakers to discuss why labour and memory are loci of collective action, and don’t miss the performances! Head to the Garden of Serenity in Santa Lucia on the 23rd and 24th November to participate! Discover what makes our young innovators of the future tick, with a special exhibition showcasing works by the winners of the U-19: Create Your World competition, held earlier this year. Youth were invited to create work in the form of digital art, mechanics, technology, music, a social project or any type of innovative futuristic idea about the world we live in. The winners were flown to a special prizegiving ceremony at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz last September, and will be showcasing their work at Esplora in Kalkara later this month.

Alcohol consumed at high altitude can have a stronger effect than usual. Cabin crew are legally empowered to refuse serving any alcohol to an intoxicated passenger and to anyone under the age of 18. In extreme cases, crew may also temporarily confiscate the passenger‘s own drinks so that the passenger does not become a nuisance to the other passengers and crew. Furthermore, Air Malta is bound by international regulations which prohibit the embarkation or the carriage of drunken passengers. But since you are reading this article, Air Malta‘s Flight Safety Committee is confident that you are a law-abiding and exemplary passenger. Indeed, the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. The consumption of one’s own alcoholic beverages inflight goes against Air Malta policy.
Smoking is prohibited from when you leave the departure terminal building until you reach the arrival terminal building. Smoking is allowed in designated areas only. Smoking is not allowed during any phase of the flight and in any area of the aircraft. Should you be aware of a passenger who has smoked in the toilet during the flight, please inform the cabin crew immediately so that they can check for any undetected fires. The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) not allowed on board Air Malta flights. Similarly, the use of naked flames on and around the aircraft is also prohibited.

NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)
Any devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile-phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities (e.g. Bluetooth and Wi-fi) are switched off. Alternatively, if the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, takeoff and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.
These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.

ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?
Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation. CAN I USE HEADPHONES? Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.
Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.
I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN … … portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.
