Merħba and welcome onboard this Air Malta flight.
September has always been one of my favourite months of the year because, for some reason, this month seems to mean something different to just about everyone. In Malta, the changing of the seasons is, indeed, a splendid time to explore. For sport enthusiasts, this month signifies the preparations for the start of the rugby season (see page 68). For parents, September means the end of summer and the beginning of the back to school routine. For socialites, it’s the beginning of the highly anticipated Autumn-Winter fashion season bursting with rich tones, sumptuous fabrics and fabulous events.
This month we are continuing to expand our route network and adding Cairo, Egypt’s sprawling capital. This is the third North African country on our route network and after an absence of 12 years, we will start opearting a twice weekly service every Thursday and Sunday. Our winter flight schedule is almost finalised and we are happy to announce a second frequency to London Gatwick Airport with a late departure from Malta and an early departure from Gatwick. This is more good news for our customers as the flight timings will offer added flexibility and improve connectivity between London and other cities on Air Malta’s route network. To operate this network we are investing in a brand new aircraft fleet. Two straight-out-of-the-production-line 180-seater Airbus A320neo registered as 9H-NEB and 9H-NEC have just joined our fleet. This type of aircraft offers state-of-the-art aerodynamics, and with its new generation engines, the neo offers unbeatable efficiency and environmental performance in terms of reduced emissions and noise levels. Designed with the latest cabin features, passengers can benefit from more cabin space and larger luggage storage.
Locally, there’s a wealth of cultural landmarks to explore as we dedicate this issue to the islands harvests. Whether it’s vines or gluts of olives (Check out Żejt iż-Żejtun on page 30). Acclaimed Master sommelier Fabien Etienne discusses the varieties of local grapes and wines available (page 38) and local writer Sarah Chircop meets a family who produces olives (page 42). Olives play an integral role in Maltese history, from harvest to olive oil production, and with many towns and streets named after them. If you haven’t tried this local liquid gold, be sure to find some upon your visit in the Maltese Isles, drizzled on a fresh slice of ħobża (bread).
The Maltese Islands' cultural and events calendar this month boasts of an impressive line-up of activities happening in several towns and villages across Malta and Gozo. The colourful Victory Day celebrations on the 8th September should not be missed. In the morning, a parade by the Armed Forces of Malta takes place in Valletta to commemorate the end of the Great Siege of 1565 as well as the end of the French rule in Malta. In the afternoon, the not-to-be-missed traditional rowing boat regatta at the Grand Harbour is held. Join the crowds and converge along the waterfront of the Grand Harbour to experience one of the most awaited traditional races in the Maltese sports calendar.
Elsewhere in the issue, we meet highly revered Malta-based artist, Don Heywood who describes his creative journey and incredible artistic feats first-hand to us. As ever, our events section is packed with a cacophony of musical, charitable, cultural and social events. Why not head over to Gozo for the Għasri olive oil, honey and wine festival? Or if you are after a night of great music, local Bjorn Formosa will host his large (free) charity concert in aid of ALS in Valletta. For those who are not aware, Bjorn Formosa is an inspirational ALS survivor who has dedicated his life to helping others with the same condition.

GOING VIRAL Going back to ’The Shredded Fries’ story I ask Richard how it all worked out. He explained that as he watched the breaking news of the story from Sotheby’s in London when Banksy’s 'Girl with Balloon’ selfdestructed just as the final hammer signalled the end of an evening of auctions, he knew this was a moment to act. Having worked on McDonald’s advertising for many years at TBWA\ANG he couldn’t stop thinking about this Banksy's story and the negative relationship this artist had with the McDonald’s brand. The idea sparked his head, an idea that changed a negative perception into one feel-good moment. Richard could not wait and opened his laptop on a Sunday to create a meme with fries being shredded resembling the Banksy’s painting. He uploaded this on his Instagram profile @maltesecreative and waited for reactions. The meme generated instant organic reach far wider than the rest of his posts and over on Twitter this was retweeted by larger agencies, and McDonalds stores worldwide. As soon as this happened other brands started to follow the trend. The meme grew bigger and bigger come daylight, appearing on the largest online blogs such as Mashable, TIME magazine and featured on AdWeek’s 25 Most Popular Stories About Creativity in 2018. THE AWARD Richard explained how Julianne Grima, Chairperson at TBWA\ANG and his General Manager Fiorella Ellul, both supported this idea by proposing the design for numerous awards. The Shredded Fries meme was shortlisted at the Creativepool awards in London and lately TBWA\ANG received the news of a Gold Award from the Summit International Awards in the USA; a competition that receives more than 4500 entries from a president-setting 27 countries including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Kuwait, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and the United States. Richard added that this award was the cherry on the cake and the fruit of his hard work and passion for creativity. This beautiful garden situated in the northern tip of Senglea was planned in 1551. You can get a beautiful panoramic view of Valletta, Marsa, the Grand Harbour and Fort St Angelo from here. The guard tower called “Il-Gardjola” is located within the garden and has various symbols engraved on it.
Fort St Michael was built by the Knights of Malta between 1551 and 1565 and was one of the three forts defending the Knights stronghold in Grand Harbour during the siege. It was largely dismantled in the 1920s but still offers a beautiful panoramic view of the city.
This impressive museum in Birgu has over 20,000 as part of its collection! It was built in 1845 to serve as the main bakery for the Mediterranean fleet. It was built on the same site which was used as the arsenal for the order of St John.

This palace served as a courthouse during the Maltese Inquisition between 1574 and 1798. When Napoleon took control of Malta in 1798, he abolished the Inquisition and the building was used as a convent, mess hall and military hospital before being converted into a museum in 1966.
The church dates back to 1584, making it one of the oldest churches in Malta. It miraculously survived the Second World War, even though the whole city was destroyed. It’s famous for it’s impressive works of art. Most renowned is a 17th-century painting of 'The Madonna and Child'.

In terms of a logistical and transportation headache, Antique Furniture In Malta (2002) must take the prize! Set over various levels in the then-newly restored St James Cavalier, a 16th century fort in Valletta, this exhibition featured around 120 items of furniture, predominantly 17th and 18th century locally made pieces. These were carefully selected to show the evolution of furniture in Malta and ranged from the most simple coffers, to exquisitely inlaid tables and bureaus, as well as intricately designed cabinets. It was a splendid show of craftsmanship, showing the uses of different woods and techniques that really left visitors appreciating even the most basic chair. One of the most renowned Maltese portrait artists is Edward Caruana Dingli (1876-1950), who gained fame in his lifetime not just for his incredibly life-like portraits but also for his colourful scenes of Malta and the locals that were used to promote the tourist industry. The exhibition, subtitled Portraits, Views and Folkloristic Scenes (2010), was highly anticipated and showcased some 250 paintings by Caruana Dingli from both private and public collections. His portraits are nothing short of remarkable, not just in the likeness to the sitter, but also in the attention to detail such as the representation of fabrics and jewellery. A short documentary on the artist’s life was also shown during the exhibition. Vanity, Profanity and Worship: Jewellery from the Maltese Islands (2013)- a rich and stupendous exhibition set in the fabulous atmosphere of the Casino Maltese, Valletta, featured jewellery and accessories found in Malta from prehistoric times up until the contemporary designers. The extensive and vibrant display brought together many different materials and styles of jewellery, both local and foreign, showing how it evolved not just as a fashion accessory but also as an art form. FPM’s last major exhibition to date, Music in Malta from Prehistory to Vinyl (2019) was a first for the Foundation on many levels. With the use of multimedia technology, this exhibition explored how music has weaved its way through the Island’s rich history, showing the foreign influences as well as how various musical sectors evolved. Sound and narration guided the visitor through this journey of musical artefacts through the use of wireless audio guides – a timeline through prehistoric sounds, church music, baroque and romantic tunes and the first vinyl recordings. A series of live music performances were also organised to complement the exhibition. It is a journey to be proud of so far. Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti has grown from strength to strength, gaining not just a reputation for excellent standards but more importantly the trust of the lenders without whose generosity these exhibitions would not be possible. We look forward to sharing more of Malta’s treasures with you in the foreseeable future!

At a time when families are preparing for the next school year and the excitement of summer is beginning to wane, the Gozo End of Summer Fest refuses to let summertime joy end. It is a weekend of music and fun for people from all walks of life and of all ages.

Throughout the year, Gozo’s calendar of events brims with the fascinating, the fabulous and the fun – and, the island’s End of Summer Fest is all three combined and more! The festival is organised by the Ministry of Gozo in collaboration with Festivals Malta, and it is an opportunity for locals and visitors to bask in Gozo’s rich heritage.
SHOULD I HEAD TO GOZO FOR THIS FESTIVAL? Every trip to Gozo is worth it! The island exudes a relaxing yet vibrant atmosphere. And, conveniently, the Gozo End of Summer Fest takes place in Żewwieqa, which is right in Mġarr Harbour. So, visitors who cross over to Gozo for the evening won’t even need to bring a car as the event is just a short walk away from the ferry.
WHAT’S IN STORE THIS YEAR? For this second edition, the organisers have pulled out all the stops, promising live music, Carnival parades, dance and endless laughter. Given last year’s immense success, this year’s Gozo End of Summer Fest was inevitable. Last year was the first time a summer carnival was held in Gozo, and it certainly wasn’t going to be the last!

Along with local onions and garlic, tomatoes, olives, capers and red wine, it results in a truly native dish. You may find, the rich flavor-some tomato sauce of the stew is served with pasta as a first course, devoured with potatoes as a main, or simply served with crusty bread.

INGREDIENTS 1kg / 1 Octopus 2pcs Maltese sausage 2tbsp Tomato paste 6 Fresh tomatoes 2 Large onions 4 Garlic cloves 12 Olives 10 Capers 2 sprigs Marjoram 1 Cinnamon stick 5 Bay leaves 2 sprigs Mint 100ml Red wine 100g Pre-soaked Haricot beans Cooking oil
METHOD Make sure you buy frozen and clean octopus or if freshly caught, place in a plastic bag, clean the head and freeze up to 1 month before using. Let it defrost and remove the head from the legs and cut into uniform pieces. In a medium-sized casserole pan over medium heat, sweat the onions and garlic with aromatics. Add the octopus and let it seal until caramelised. Mix in the tomato paste and cook until it starts to caramelise. Deglaze the pan with red wine and let it reduce until dry. Add the roughly chopped tomatoes and white beans. Cover with water, bring to a boil and let it simmer over low heat until tender for about 1.5hrs. Boil the sausage separately. Let it cool and cut into a desired shape. Mix in the stew. Finish with local olives and capers. Garnish with fresh mint and drizzle extra virgin olive oil. Serve with traditional Maltese bread.

SUPER LEAGUE TRIATHLON BACK AGAIN IN MALTA THIS OCTOBER What were the highlights? I was surprised how I performed in Malta, but the highlight had to be the course. It was a course I only dreamt of, and for spectators it has to be the best on the Super League circuit as if you park on top of the hill you could see every part of the course - it's amazing! Having such a lovely backdrop of Malta’s beautiful capital city of Valletta in the background and its history was absolutely spectacular. Definitely one of the most beautiful races I've been to.
Super League Triathlon is bringing some of the world’s greatest athletes to Malta between 19th - 20th October – and the sport’s very own Maltese Falcon is ready to swoop.
Can you explain how you got your Maltese Falcon nickname? I was gaining on the front chase pack on the bike and the commentator kept saying “get behind him ladies and gentlemen, here he comes, the Maltese Falcon.”
Malta will host a Championship Series race on the weekend of which offers spectators a chance to get so close to the action you can almost touch the Pros as they battle for a huge prize purse.
I did some research on the Maltese Falcon and the legendary aeroplane war pilot would just come out of nowhere and surprise enemies from behind and take them down. I guess that’s what I did and surprised a few people and the name has just stuck.

What are your ambitions for 2019? I've got some big ambitions for this year’s Super League. I've been in good form so I’m aiming high and want to finish in the top four overall and hopefully take the top spot in a few races.

Allied Rainbow Communities, the NGO coordinating Malta Pride together with other NGOs working for the LGBTQ+ community have come up with the theme, “From Riots to Rainbows - 50 Years since Stonewall”. The theme is intended to conscientise people how Pride originated and the spirit behind it. In 1969, the NYPD raided the Stonewall Inn, which was a watering hole for LGBTQ+ people and what was considered a safe space in a time where such people were still being sent to Mental Health hospitals, harassed, beaten up or executed in cold blood in the streets of New York City. In that raid, the patrons of the Inn protested and rioted against the oppression of the police and the system in general by marching down St Christopher’s Street.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING WITH AIR MALTA AND WHAT ROLES HAVE YOU SERVED? I joined Air Malta as a cadet pilot in 1994 and started flying for the airline in 1996. I've been a Captain since 2003. In 2017 I was appointed as a Type Rating Instructor and on 1st August 2019 I took up the role of Chief Pilot Training.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF YOUR JOB? Every flight has its own challenges. The biggest challenges come in the form of very busy airspace or bad weather along our routing.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? I love football, but besides following the game I am also a qualified coach and have been coaching at youth nursery level for over 20 years.
WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED MALTESE DISH? Hard to pick one, but I'd probably choose fried rabbit in garlic.
WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE OF ALL TIMES? Another tough one. The choice would boil down to either ‘Once Upon A Time in America’ or ‘Godfather II’.
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE TO FOLLOW? I am very much into rock music and listen to all genres of rock, from classic rock to metal, to progressive rock.
WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION AND WHY? I love travelling and there are many destinations I have visited that are memorable in different ways . I however must say that visiting the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania was a dream come true.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE SPOTS AND TIPS FOR ANYONE VISITING THE MALTESE ISLANDS? The Maltese Islands are small but it is possible to go off the beaten track. I'd suggest hikes in the countryside in the Siġġiewi-Rabat-Dingli-Baħrija areas. The views of the countryside, cliffs and sea are simply outstanding.

Alcohol consumed at high altitude can have a stronger effect than usual. Cabin crew are legally empowered to refuse to serve any alcohol to an intoxicated passenger and anyone under the age of 18. In extreme cases, crew may also temporarily confiscate the passenger‘s own drinks so that the passenger does not become a nuisance to the other passengers and crew. Furthermore, Air Malta is bound by international regulations which prohibit the embarkation or the carriage of drunken passengers. However, since you are reading this article, Air Malta‘s Flight Safety Committee is confident that you are a law-abiding and exemplary passenger. Indeed, the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. The consumption of one’s own alcoholic beverages inflight goes against Air Malta policy.
Smoking is prohibited from when you leave the departure terminal building until you reach the arrival terminal building. Smoking is allowed in designated areas only. Smoking is not allowed during any phase of the flight and in any area of the aircraft. Should you be aware of a passenger who has smoked in the toilet during the flight, please inform the cabin crew immediately so that they can check for any undetected fires. TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)
NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)
Devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobilephones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities such as GSM & Wi-fi are switched off. Devices working on Bluetooth wireless connectivity are allowed. If the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, takeoff and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.
These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.
L APTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation.
ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?
CAN I USE HEADPHONES? Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.
Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.
I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN … your portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.
