W ELC OM E

FROM THE CEO...

FRO M THE ED ITO R...

Merħba and welcome onboard.

Hello again,

In keeping with our planned long-term fleet strategy, preparations are well underway for the arrival of a straight-out-of-theproduction-line Airbus A320 NEO. The arrival of this aircraft this month is another step forward in our strategy to standardise our fleet as we establish Air Malta as the ‘Airline of the Mediterranean’.

The month of July is perceived in two very different and distinct ways. Some inhabitants are delighted the full pelt of summer is finally here, and others crave the fresh Maltese winters. When you see it on paper, your mind makes the obvious connections. Summer equals heat, sweat, beach time, school’s out and holidays galore. However, I did a little research (because I’m a complete vocabulary nerd) and learned about a hidden meaning. The word “summer” is from the Proto-Indo-European root “sam,” which means summer. “sam” is a variant of the root “sem,” which means; “together/one.” So, there it is, hidden but not surprising. Summer is the season of togetherness.

We are currently in the process of replacing all the present Airbus 320 CEO (Current Engine option) fleet to a brand new all Airbus 320 NEO (New Engine Option) fleet. The NEO is more environmentally friendly and boasts of 20 per cent better fuel efficiency compared to older models. Passengers will also benefit from an enhanced customer experience, better standards of comfort, including improved cabin lighting and close to a 50 per cent reduction in engine noise, while customers in Business Class will be enjoying increased leg room.

Maybe you find that togetherness over a sweet treat. In our monthly recipe on page 95, chef David Calleja talks us through his seasonal fig flan. The fruits are in abundance in the islands, and synonymous of life despite the drought.

During this time of the year Malta is truly jam-packed with activities. Many outdoor events are organised around Malta and Gozo including village feasts celebrating various Patron Saints and live music festivals. The BBC Concert Orchestra and former Oasis, frontman, Liam Gallagher, are performing in Malta this month during two free concerts at the Fosos in Floriana. Another free event is the annual appointment of the Isle of MTV Malta at the Granaries in Floriana, featuring a line-up of top international artists such as rising pop star Ava Max, Bebe Rexha and world-famous DJ Martin Garrix. If you really want to make your stay a memorable one make sure you attend UNITE With Tomorrowland - a unique worldclass electronic music event with superstar DJs Armin van Buuren and Steve Aoki amongst others. All these events are supported by Air Malta, and the Malta Tourism Authority who work together to host more and more world-class events on the islands.

Perhaps you find that togetherness through a shared appreciation for a work of art, on page 52 where we are spotlighting the work of Kris Micallef, an internationally renowned photographer, famed for his stunning underwater scenes. Alternatively, maybe you find that togetherness visiting locations off the beaten track with friends or family, such as this month’s guide to secret swimming spots or exploring our star destination of St Paul’s Bay.

For more information about Air Malta and our flight schedules please visit www.airmalta.com and www.facebook.com/AirMalta and join our newsletter mailing list to receive great offers directly in your inbox.

On a final note, Malta may be surrounded by shimmering azure waters, but the island is famous for having limited natural water resources. Water is both a precious fundamental resource for life and source of recreation on the islands, whether it is above or below, the sea also holds centuries of fascinating stories. Take a look at the underwater archaeology piece or the story of piracy on the islands. It’s a truly glorious water-based edition.

At Air Malta we are customer-driven and are always keen to know what we could do better to improve your Air Malta flight experience. Visit www.airmalta.com/wearelistening to answer a few short questions about your flight with us and you can win one of 10 free return Air Malta flights we are offering every month.

Sit back and enjoy your flight.

Thank you for choosing Air Malta. As our welcomed guest we hope to see you on-board another one of our flights soon.

BEEFBAR IS HEADING TO MALTA MONACO, HONG KONG, MYKONOS, PARIS, MEXICO, BUDAPEST AND NOW... MALTA.

For the very first time, this fine-dining and international concept by Riccardo Giraudi will be making its appearance on the island this summer. Located in St Paul's Bay, guests can enjoy panoramic views, a jaw-dropping pool, VIP gazebos and resident DJs. Now let's talk food...

Warm, elegant, inviting and equally festive, Beefbar on the Beach is Malta’s summer destination. Dine, lounge and enjoy in lavish style. As the first beach club concept for the Beefbar brand, Humbert & Poyet were inspired by Malta’s traditional Mediterranean environment, especially the sea and the island’s natural stone and local craftsmanship.

Beefbar will serve only the best cuts of meat in the world. Diners can sink their teeth into certified Kobe beef, grass-fed Argentinian beef, American Black Angus beef, Australian Wagyu beef and more.

Humbert & Poyet have designed a space which is warm, elegant, inviting and equally festive. Guests can dine, lounge and enjoy live music during the day and through the night.

Each dish is prepared in the open kitchen. Sharing style starters include mini Kobe beef sliders, Kobe ribeye tataki, Wagyu beef gyoza, tartare, soft Angus beef tacos, ceviche, carpaccio and bao buns (to name a few). Aside from serving the most elite steaks (matched with signature purée topped with jalapeños, truffle and more), Beefbar will launch skewers prepared on a Robata grill such as tuna, prime ribeye with chimichurri sauce, and a ray of vegetables. The whole baby chicken or the steamed seabream with Imperial soy sauce and ginger would be great alternative dishes if you're not in the mood for red meat.

Beefbar Malta Coming soon in St Paul’s Bay beefbar.com Instagram: @beefbar_malta

Beefbar also offers a No beef section on the menu, which includes the brand new Leafbar concept, a fresh fish selection, chicken and pasta. Beefbar will focus on experiences as much as the food. You can expect a private charter alongside the eatery that can be booked for private parties, events, photoshoots or trips to Comino. For that extra VIP feeling, a courtesy 8-seater Mercedes or a rib can be booked as a means of transportation to and from the venue. 20

MALTA: AN INVESTMENT LOCATION FOR THE FUTURE Considered one of Europe’s best-kept secrets, many are still amazed to discover the plethora of benefits associated with investing and living in Malta.

CITIZENSHIP-BY-INVESTMENT GOLD STANDARD Developed by the Government of Malta in partnership with Henley & Partners, the Malta Individual Investor Program (MIIP) is considered one of the most successful and credible citizenship program in the world. The minimum capital contribution for a single applicant is approximately EUR 1 million, which consists of a donation to the country’s development fund, a real estate purchase or rental, and an investment in government-approved financial instruments.

Situated just off the European coast beneath Sicily, the small island of Malta has established itself as a leading financial centre, offering foreign investors stability, security, and innovation. The Mediterranean island has experienced above-average economic growth in recent years, as investors and travellers alike tap into the island nation’s enormous potential. During the first half of 2018, Malta had the fastest growing economy in the Eurozone, boasting an economic growth rate of more than 5%. Considering this exponential growth and Malta’s incredible lifestyle benefits, an increasing number of people are looking to make greater investments in the island. Malta’s acclaimed citizenship-by-investment program offers investors the opportunity to obtain citizenship in exchange for a substantial economic contribution to the country and forge genuine links with the island.

The MIIP has set the industry benchmark in terms of application processing, applying the world’s strictest due diligence standards and vetting of applicants. Each applicant and their included family members have to pass a strict four-tier due diligence process to ensure that all individuals entering Malta through citizenship-by-investment have no association with any criminal activities or form of corruption.

MEDITERRANEAN LIFESTYLE Malta is often referred to as an open-air museum and has a history that dates to 5,000 BCE — the island’s skyline is dominated by 16th-century architecture. The country is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Among them, its capital, Valletta, donned the illustrious crown of ‘European Capital of Culture’ in 2018.

The Maltese government understands that a healthy private sector and an overall pro-investment climate contributes to the country’s sustainable development. To this extent, Malta Enterprise was created with an objective to support private businesses operating in the country, and its services are priceless to new investors entering the market. It provides assistance in data analysis, helps with identifying potential partners and clients, and guides investors through the legal system.

Along with its rich history, Malta offers 300 days of sunshine, seasculpted shores, and azure waters. The island’s lifestyle is modern and welcoming, and the influences of its location are evident in local food. Dishes feature a mix of Mediterranean cuisine with strong influences from Italy, created from fresh ingredients from the local land and sea. A SECURE HAVEN FOR YOUR FAMILY An EU member since 2004, Malta provides its residents with the same benefits afforded to European citizens, such as access to the world’s best educational and medical facilities and security under the protection of the region’s strong legal system. Malta is considered one of the safest countries in terms of natural disasters and crime. According to the 2018 edition of the World Risk Report, the island nation ranks as the second safest in the world behind Qatar on the 172-nation ranking of disaster risks. The crime rate on the island is also almost non-existent.

FUTURE-FACING INVESTMENT DESTINATION In 2018, Malta became the first country in the world to establish a regulatory framework for blockchain technology. The island nation has also long been a front runner in the iGaming and fintech industries.

The country has earned a reputation for being highly familyoriented — many of its public places and establishments are welcoming of and cater to children. Malta has excellent local and international public and private education, with all schools teaching in English. The standard of health care in Malta is among the highest in the world, with a wide network of clinics and the renowned private Saint James Hospital servicing residents.

The country’s online gaming industry has shown impressive growth over the past few years, supporting local employment and bolstering revenue for the island. The sector accounts for a substantial part of Malta’s economy, contributing over 12% of the country’s overall GDP.

THRIVING REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY Malta’s real estate market has shown outstanding resilience during the 2008 global recession and continues to grow in sales. The purchase of real estate on the island archipelago is at an alltime high. During the first half of 2018, property prices in Malta increased more than any other country in the world.

THE GLOBAL LEADER IN INVESTMENT MIGRATION Henley & Partners is a global leader in residence and citizenship planning. Our highly qualified professionals work together as one team in over 30 offices worldwide. With a local office in Malta, our experienced global team is best-placed to guide you through your citizenship-by-investment journey.

The increasing number of buyers looking to purchase real estate in Malta is driven by various factors, including the opening of branches of some of the world’s most influential financial institutions, online businesses, and reinsurance companies. Malta offers an abundance of property options, including apartments, maisonettes, ‘houses of character’, palazzos, villas, and bungalows.

The firm also runs a leading government advisory practice that has raised more than USD 8 billion in foreign direct investment. Trusted by governments, the firm has been involved in strategic consulting and in the design, setup, and operation of the world’s most successful residence and citizenship programs.

AN ATTRACTIVE PLACE FOR BUSINESS A flexible and highly trained multilingual workforce is one of Malta’s principal assets and helps to ensure the country’s competitive edge through high-quality production at costs that are highly competitive in relation to the rest of Europe. Investors operating in Malta also benefit from easy access to European and Middle Eastern markets and the EU’s free trade agreements. Further bolstering Malta’s business appeal is its membership to the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organization, and the International Labour Organization.

The Granaries, Floriana

The Granaries, Floriana

Oasis was formed in Manchester in 1991 and the group went on to record seven albums, all of which hit number one in the UK. Most people on the planet, young and old, are familiar with their biggest hits such as ‘Wonderwall‘, ‘Morning Glory‘, ‘Champagne Supernova‘, their hits are endless… Liam Gallagher took his career solo in 2017, and to no surprise has returned to the top of the charts again. In comparison to his Oasis days, Liam hasn’t taken a dramatic leap from his earlier style of music, but then why change what works, right? He has managed to retain those catchy vocals and rhythms that are authentic to the Oasis-style anthems that we all love, and it proves that he has still got what it takes, plus more.

FILFLA FROM BOMBS TO BIRDS TAKE A WALK ALONG DINGLI CLIFFS AND YOUR SEA VIEW WILL INCLUDE THE ISLET OF FILFLA. THIS WEDGE-SHAPED LIMESTONE OUTCROP IS ABOUT 5KM OFFSHORE AND MARKS THE SOUTHERN END OF THE MALTESE ARCHIPELAGO. THE CRUMBLING ROCK MIGHT LOOK UNINHABITED BUT EVERY YEAR, RESEARCHERS HEAD OUT TO THE ISLAND TO MEET SOME OF ITS SHY RESIDENTS.

38

But before we get to them, we need to take a jaunt through history to find out how the island developed its maze of boulders and rocks. Filfla’s connection with humans probably began with the temple builders in Neolithic times. Those ancient people constructed two of their most important temples right opposite the islet, which suggests it might have held some sacred significance for them. There’s evidence that they visited Filfla too, including finds of pottery and animal bones. Later, the Ħamrija Watch Tower was built facing the island, perhaps to spot any incoming raiders trying to use the rock as a staging post. A chapel, a fort and a lighthouse were built over the years, but in 1856, an earthquake destroyed not only these structures, but part of the island itself. Freshwater springs persisted however, making the island a useful stopping point for sailors. The earth shook again when the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force had the bright idea of using the ‘peppercorn’ (the name ‘Filfla’ comes from the Arabic word filfel which stands for ‘pepper’) as a bombing target, in part because it looked like a ship at sea. They bombed the heck out of it until 1971, which explains the jumble of enormous boulders, 60 metres below the plateau. The bombing, combined with erosion, reduced the size of Filfla considerably. By a quirk of fate, the destruction wrought by the Brits had a positive outcome. The risk of unexploded ordinance on and around the island meant that public access was banned. A fishing ban remains in place within one nautical mile to avoid a catch of explosives (despite this, local people used to dive down to retrieve the bombs, in order to dry the gunpowder for use in fireworks). Filfla was designated as a bird reserve in the 1980s… which brings us to the island’s inhabitants. The peace and quiet made the islet a desirable residence for some of Malta’s more retiring occupants - seabirds. Scopoli’s Shearwaters and Yellow-legged Gulls return every year to raise their chicks. The cryptic Mediterranean Stormpetrel also sets up home here; the gaps between the bombed-out boulders make the most perfect nesting habitat for them. This bird is also known as the Kangu ta’ Filfla and up to 50% of the world population nest in Malta, the vast majority on Filfla. Every year, researchers visit to monitor the populations, overnighting on the island to count the birds. The island is also home to the ‘Filfla Lizard’, a subspecies of the Maltese

Organic clothing for girls, designed in Malta.

Wall Lizard. It’s a black and blue reptile, which is found nowhere else in the world; being isolated on the islet led to microevolutionary processes that differentiate it from four other subspecies in Malta. Scientists have also found an endemic door snail, which has an elongated shell, and there’s even an outsized, wild leek growing out there – it reaches heights of two metres. You might not be able to set foot on Filfla but it’s still fun to view it from afar. The 250-metre high cliffs at Dingli offer the best angle, but the island is

BRONZE FOR DELICATA’S MEDINA VERMENTINO ZIBIBBO Delicata’s 2018 Medina Vermentino Zibibbo DOK Malta has landed a bronze medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards, judged by the world’s top wine experts. This dry white wine, carefully crafted by Malta’s foremost Delicata winery, was characterized as having "a fresh, aromatic nose of white flesh fruit and white flowers with good fruit intensity on the palate and persistent length". Ten years ago, most people had a hard time even spelling Vermentino. Yet today it's one of the most promising white wine grapes in Malta and it blends well with that other Mediterranean grape, Zibibbo (also knowns as Muscat of Alexandria). The appreciation and growing thirst for well-made Vermentino, locally as well as internationally, goes to show how much things can change in a decade. In the story of wine the final chapter is always waiting to be written. In the meanwhile, let Delicata’s refreshing Medina Vermentino Zibibbo rule your shopping list this summer. Delicata, established in 1907, is Malta’s most awarded winery and the only Maltese winemaker to win at the 2019 DWWA in London.

QAWRA POINT BEACH

Uncover more than 5500 years of Maltese history while breathing in fresh air filtered by the surrounding trees. This trail has more than 20 archaeological sites. Maps are available free of charge in the local council in St Paul’s bay or at the tourist information office near Buġibba Square.

Discover everything you need to know about Malta’s marine and land animals in this aquarium spread across 20,000 square metres. The aquarium has 41 tanks and all the tanks are expertly themed to replicate the underwater environment. There are also facilities for local diving schools and a beach club.

Enjoy the majestic scenery that this beach offers and cool down with a dip in the beautiful blue waters. Qawra point beach is a short walk from the Malta National Aquarium. It also has a lift for differently abled visitors allowing them the opportunity to access the calming waters from the beach.

QAWRA TOWER

CASTELLO DEI BARONI

Built in 1610, the tower was the first and oldest surviving coastal defence post in Malta. It was restored between 2014 and 2015. It is open to the public between 10am and 1pm Mondays to Saturdays and on the first Sunday of each month. Please contact Din l-Art Ħelwa before your visit.

Built-in 1638 by the Order of St John, this tower linked with a series of coastal watchtowers called De Redin Towers to allow the flow of communication between Gozo and Valletta. Today it serves as a restaurant and pizzeria that specialises in Maltese cuisine and barbeques in the summer.

This house museum has its roots in the late 18th century and was completed in the 20th century. It’s famous for its impressive architecture, gardens and exhibits. The exhibits are mostly about a historically favourite pastime in Malta, hunting. An optional audio-visual tour is also available in several languages.

This year, the highly-anticipated Malta Jazz Festival – organised by Festivals Malta – boasts not one but two impressive accolades, having been awarded the Best Artistic Programme or Season Award from il-Premju għall-Arti 2019 as well as the EFFE label from the European Festival Academy. The former celebrates its exceptional cultural contribution during the 2017/2018 season, while the latter recognises the Malta Jazz Festival as upholding important European values like innovation, inclusivity, diversity and intercultural dialogue.

The festival can also claim some credit for the development of the Maltese jazz scene, which grew up around the collaborations fostered by the Malta Jazz Festival. Dynamic young musicians are now putting their work front and centre in dedicated jazz venues that are changing the way audiences engage with the music. The festival itself has seen its audience grow to include a younger, curious and enthusiastic crowd, testament to its wider appeal, and there are ‘real’ jazz venues to be discovered, like Storeroom and Offbeat. Visitors to the Malta Jazz Festival can look forward to concerts by Fred Pasqua featuring Nelson Veras, at Notre Dame Gate in Vittoriosa and at Palazzo Vilhena in Mdina. Lunchtime concerts will be taking place on each weekday during the festival, bringing the entrance to Valletta to life with performances by the Charles 'City' Gatt Quartet, the Anthony Saliba Quartet and others.

After nearly 30 years, it comes as no surprise that the Malta Jazz Festival has, much like the music it showcases, changed significantly since those early editions. In 2019, the jazz festival will feature events, including jam sessions, masterclasses, concerts and a photographic exhibition, that take place around the island, instead of just being centred around Valletta. Indoor venues are also being used this year.

In the evenings, masterclasses and jam sessions will allow the audience to get up close and personal with some of the most exciting jazz musicians on the scene. The Phoenicia Hotel will be hosting an exhibition by photographer Darrin Zammit Lupi throughout the festival, featuring photos taken at past editions of the festival.

Artistic Director Sandro Zerafa explains these new additions to the programme. “I always longed for a couple of venues that would be more adapted to a quieter, more intimate, ‘chamber’ kind of sound. I find that not all styles of jazz are suited to outdoor venues,” he says. “We aim to showcase the genre in all its forms and having the right venue allows our audience to experience each one as it was intended.”

All of these events are completely free. The festival ends with two ticketed concerts, taking place in the Ta’ Liesse area of Valletta. Chucho Valdés, Kenny Garrett, Jazzmeia Horn, Ozmosys featuring Omar Hakim, Rachel Z, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Linley Marthe make up the star-studded line-up.

The range of events on offer at the Malta Jazz Festival makes it a great place for the layman to discover jazz, which can seem a little inaccessible at first.

These concerts embody what the festival is all about. “The Malta Jazz Festival continues reaching out to the people without succumbing to a populist makeover,” says Sandro. “It is a festival of contrasts and for the past years the festival has developed a unique ability to enrich and entertain.”

Sandro explains that jazz used to be music that people danced to, but it gradually became increasingly sophisticated and complex. “Jazz needs to preserve this tension between its popular roots and its erudite side,” he says. “In modern society’s context, our ears have become less discerning. “So, artists and people in the arts have a responsibility to propagate a notion of artistic integrity and to counterbalance populism,” he says. “The Malta Jazz Festival is a showcase for the plethora of different styles which define the jazz world today.”

The Malta Jazz Festival is taking place between 15 and 20 July. For more information and to make bookings, visit https://www.festivals.mt/jazzfestival. 71

“I moved to Malta around three years ago, predominantly to pursue my career in the graphics world. Malta has many I-gaming companies where graphic designers are in demand, so it seemed like a logical place for me to come, and of course not be too far away from home! Having published a cartoon book in Italy, I had already built up an extensive portfolio before coming to Malta - that helped me in securing my job here, as I am entirely self-taught. I continuously draw, in every minute of spare time I have. As a cartoon artist. I am very inspired by the traditional Italian comic strip style, so I channel my creativity into graphics by drawing realistic characters and symbols for a gaming company. I enjoy working with people and projects with a clear vision - whether the concept is big or small is irrelevant. I’m currently working with some great people in the igaming industry for Mobil6000. It’s a great feeling to be able to work towards these goals - goals you wouldn’t necessarily have come across on your own. These selective partnerships enable you to perpetually do great things without investing all of your time into a singular goal. To me, this is perhaps the most attractive aspect of graphic design. Malta is full of opportunities for young people wishing to pursue a design career and has welcomed me with open arms. The weather is great, and I really enjoy the everyday way of life. If you are interested in pursuing this as a career here, I would strongly suggest you study the requirements of the application and equip yourself with the skills required to exceed what they are looking for.”

WORDS THE MARIGOLD FOUNDATION TEAM

THE MARIGOLD SWIM 2019 T A I L’ S E N D Facing challenges is never easy. It takes perseverance, focus and a positive mindset. This is precisely what Michelle Muscat, Chairperson of The Marigold Foundation and Spouse of the Prime Minister, will be doing as she prepares for her 14km open sea solo swimming challenge on the 13th July diving off the Northern coast of Malta and swimming around the 'tail' part of the island. Michelle Muscat challenges herself to be able to assist others with their challenges. The Marigold Foundation, supported by BOV, recognises and is committed to serving NGOs, such as Special Olympics Malta, the Autism Parents Association, ALS Malta and The National Alliance for Rare Diseases, to name just a few. This Foundation mentors, focuses, educates and empowers NGOs in their various projects and initiatives. It networks amongst NGOs so as to make the best of available resources. Michelle Muscat dedicates 2 hours daily to train in order to prepare herself for this challenge which has seen her increasing the distances by 2km per year. This year marks the longest and most mentally and physically demanding swim yet. ‘Tail’s End’ is taking place on July 13th, 2019 and is a gruelling 14km open sea swim. Her swimming challenges over the years reflect solidarity with the challenges Maltese and Gozitan citizens bravely face on a daily basis, including the fight against cancer, mental health issues, physical and intellectual disabilities, social and family challenges to raising awareness on issues that are important in today 's fast society. To celebrate the completion of the 'Tail's End' challenge, The Marigold Foundation is hosting the annual After Swim Golden White Party at the Radisson Blue Resort Golden Sands, on the evening of July 13th. All proceeds will go to the umbrella of causes The Marigold Foundation supports. For more information and to purchase tickets please call +356 9991 2373.

8 OF MALTA’S MOST INSTAGRAMMABLE SPOTS If you’re looking for a location where you can go Instagram-crazy, then Malta is the place for you. Our little island has made quite a name for itself on the app, thanks to our pristine historical sites, crystal clear water and impressive geography. In fact, the island has been Instagrammed over 4.8 million times. While there are endless places to snap while you’re here, we know that time is of the essence. So here are our top 8 picks for you to enjoy - Mind you it was really hard to narrow them down!

1. The Streets, Valletta

(Credit: Elena Desira @elenadesira) Valletta is an Instagram favourite, amassing over 450,000 posts. Walking around, it’s clear to see why. The streets are bursting with history and culture, and the vibrant balconies are amongst the most distinctive features in Malta.

2. Triton Fountain, Valletta

(Credit: Khrystyna Kregel @krystynakregel) While in Valletta, you must also visit the recently renovated Triton Fountain. This iconic monument welcomes visitors in front of the entrance to Valletta. This fountain used to be the centre of our bus terminus, but the pedestrianization has transformed it into a photography hot-spot.

92

3. The Gate, Mdina

(Credit: Eleni Valvi @eleni_valvi) Our entrance to our oldest city, Mdina, is a gorgeous medieval gateway. It looks like it comes right out of fantasy film…and, actually, it does! Mdina was one of the main locations in the early seasons of Game of Thrones (GoT). So, for the GoT fans reading, a visit to Mdina is a must!

T E C H NO L O G Y

4. The Beach, Għajn Tuffieħa

(Credit: Jana Krcova @janickaaak) When it comes to sandy beaches, Golden Bay is probably our most popular, and towel space is hard to find. However, if you want an even better vista, go to the bay right next to it: Ghajn Tuffieha. The steep stairs to get down there put off some tourists, but it’s well worth the extra exercise!

7. St Peter’s Pool, Marsaxlokk

(Credit: Léa Huinahã @lealohaaaa) Have you ever dreamt of snapping a stunning natural swimming pool? Your dream can become true if you visit St. Peter’s Pool, located close to Marsaxlokk at the tip of Delimara Point in the southwest of Malta. This location does not only offer onshore instagrammable photos (jumping off the cliff into the crystal clear blue waters or getting some particular rock formations), but even under-the-sea picturesque views.

5. The Blue Waters, Blue Lagoon, Comino

(Credit: Mirelle Tome @mirelletome) Malta’s most Instagram-friendly bay by far. This is the kind of beach you’ve been day-dreaming about at the office. The brilliant turquoise waters attract tons of tourists, so get there early to beat the crowd. While you’re there, take the chance to hike around the rest of the island of Comino.

8. The Umbrella Street, Zabbar,

(Credit: Sarah Zerafa @sosazerafa) Zabbar has taken art installations to new heights, with their colourful umbrella display! Just head out to the street off Venda’s square and check out the polychromatic eye feast: it’s definitely worth the trip. Honestly, we can’t get enough of this joyful rainbow parade! Rain or shine, these candy coloured umbrellas are the mood booster we all need.

93

6. Popeye Village, Mellieħa

(Credit: Kresha Bajaj @kreshabajaj) There’s a good chance you’re travelling to Malta as a family. If so, then Popeye’s Village will keep both your kids and your Instagram account, very happy. This was the original film set for the beloved Robin Williams movie. Even for those without kids, its cuteness is sure to bring out the child within.

If you’re looking for a location where you can go Instagramcrazy, then Malta is the place for you.

MARSASKALA GIRL GUIDES BROWNIES TRAVEL ON AIR MALTA Air Malta had the pleasure to welcome onboard its flight to London Heathrow, Marsaskala’s Girl Guides Brownies Pack. The group was on its way to the New Forest Foxlease UK Guiding Activitiy centre in Hampshire, UK. This was the very first time that the Girl Guides Brownie Pack went on an international adventure. During their stay the Maltese group joined a group of other Brownies from Eastbourne, Sussex. They embarked on various activities including a wildlife trek through the New Forest, a campfire with a singing circle; fencing, archery, monkey tree climbing and ziplining to name a few. The Brownies enjoyed a fun packed progamme full of activities which was only possible thanks to their group leaders who meticulously planned this adventure to make it an unforgettable experience. The Maltese group had a fabulous time and lots of new experiences. “We really enjoyed our trip and we wish to thank Air Malta for their care. The airline’s team left no stone unturned to offer us the best experience from the moment we booked our flights till the end of our adventure”, said one of the organisers. Air Malta thanks the Marsaskala Girl Guides for their support and hopes that this trip was a great experience for the whole group.

TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

Any devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile-phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities (e.g. Bluetooth and Wi-fi) are switched off. Alternatively, if the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, takeoff and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.

These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.

L APTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation.

ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?

CAN I USE HEADPHONES? Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.

Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.

I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN … your portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.

If you require more information, please refer to the table below which includes a list of Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) which can be used onboard Air Malta flights by phase of flight. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of our cabin crew if you have any further questions.
