There are countless local E-sports events where local talent can compete against their peers, and show off their skills, such as the Annual Go Malta E-sports Festival. Like any other sport, E-sports has a huge range of potential. First of all, a single E-sports team has a wide variety of roles on staff. You have marketing teams, coaches, scouts, analysts, graphic designers and more. That is not including the staff attached to the players themselves, or the people involved in organising the events. From a pure socio-economic standpoint then, E-sports will provide a lot of new jobs. Secondly, E-sports brings with it the potential for boosting tourism. People will travel to Malta to see and follow the best teams compete. In addition to this there are potential sponsorship opportunities that might happen as a result. This list is by no means exhaustive. For example, we also have 5G mobile networks, the possibility of augmented reality, and foldable phones. Like I said, a year is a very long time in tech, and who knows what breakthroughs could happen. But we look forward to seeing the host of new technologies unfold in and around Malta during 2019.

I always purchase an aisle seat, so I can get up from my seat to stretch my legs without inconveniencing anyone. I always try to arrive at the airport three to four hours before my flight departs. You’ll never know what can go wrong on your way to the airport. (Good advice, especially if you are travelling to a London airport Ed.) When possible, I travel using hand luggage only. It removes the stress of waiting in a queue to check-in your bags and, most important of all, it removes the anxiety of whether your luggage will arrive with you at your destination.

MALTA: OPEN FOR BUSINESS It should go without saying but Malta is open for business. In fact, Europe’s fastest growing economy in terms of GDP at nearly 5% (according to the European Commission) is poised to go from strength to strength this year. 2018 was not only good for Malta on a cultural level (see our pieces on the legacy of Valletta 2018 on pages 20 and 30) but also on a business one. The economy is growing and becoming more varied, tourism is becoming more spread throughout the year and regulations are being made to enable more dynamism and new technologies such as Blockchain grow quickly. Malta is in a healthy position from a business perspective.

A GROWING NATION Since joining the EU in 2004, Malta has gone from strength to strength, from its classification as an advanced economy by the International Monetary Fund to the adoption of the Euro and its pioneering leadership of the iGaming industry. The diversified nature of the economy is a positive and Malta’s strategic position at the heart of the Mediterranean has been a benefit for the island for centuries. Malta also needs to address its green economy and its over-reliance on imported fuel - investment in solar or wind power would not go amiss into achieving this but local councils should be commended for their recent recycling drives.

Nothing quite warms up a winter’s evening than a good lobster thermidor. This dish using fresh Maltese lobster, is quite the decadent treat for a winter evening. Surprisingly easy to make, a lobster thermidor is perfect for a romantic meal or to impress guests at a dinner party. The dish also works with crayfish.
LOBSTER THERMIDOR INGREDIENTS 1 medium lobster (or lobster tails) 25g butter 1/2 cup fish stock (or make a stock from the lobster shells) 2 tablespoons of flour 1 onion finely chopped 1/4 cup milk 1/4 cup cream 1/2 tablespoon mustard 1 teaspoon lemon juice Grated parmesan cheese Breadcrumbs for sprinkling Olive Oil for drilling Salt and pepper to taste Fresh bread to serve
METHOD Cut the lobster in half and remove the meat. Chop into pieces and place back in the shell. Drizzle with olive oil and roast the lobster in the oven for 10 mins. Meanwhile, lightly fry the onion in the butter until softened. Add the flour and combine the milk and cream until thickened. Add salt, pepper, lemon juice and mustard to taste. Take the roasted lobster meat from the shells and add to the sauce. Spoon the lobster sauce back into the shells. Sprinkle with cheese and breadcrumbs until browned and bubbling. Serve with chips.
THE LOBSTER Lobster is well-known to Maltese waters and can, in fact, be found throughout the Mediterranean. The most common type of lobster in the Mediterranean is known as Homarus Gammarus or the European Lobster and is a relative of the American Lobster. Fishing season for lobster in the Med is between April and August but the crustacean can be eaten all-year round, found in most supermarkets either fresh or frozen. Lobsters’ expense is often due to the fact that it is caught in the wild rather than being farmed like some other seafood. However lobster is rich and delicate and can be enjoyed in a variety of ways from bisques to rolls and beyond.

SMOKING
Alcohol consumed at high altitude can have a stronger effect than usual. Cabin crew are legally empowered to refuse serving any alcohol to an intoxicated passenger and to anyone under the age of 18. In extreme cases, crew may also temporarily confiscate the passenger‘s own drinks so that the passenger does not become a nuisance to the other passengers and crew. Furthermore, Air Malta is bound by international regulations which prohibit the embarkation or the carriage of drunken passengers. But since you are reading this article, Air Malta‘s Flight Safety Committee is confident that you are a law-abiding and exemplary passenger. Indeed, the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. The consumption of one’s own alcoholic beverages inflight goes against Air Malta policy.
Smoking is prohibited from when you leave the departure terminal building until you reach the arrival terminal building. Smoking is allowed in designated areas only. Smoking is not allowed during any phase of the flight and in any area of the aircraft. Should you be aware of a passenger who has smoked in the toilet during the flight, please inform the cabin crew immediately so that they can check for any undetected fires. The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) not allowed on board Air Malta flights. Similarly, the use of naked flames on and around the aircraft is also prohibited.

USE OF PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES ON BOARD TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)
NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)
Any devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile-phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities (e.g. Bluetooth and Wi-fi) are switched off. Alternatively, if the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, takeoff and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.
These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.
L APTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS
ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?
Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation. CAN I USE HEADPHONES? Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.
Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.
I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN … … portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.
