most probably soaring through the air, watching the clouds whip by as you make your way to a far away, or not so far away land. You’re heading off to or getting back from an adventure and September is all about adventures. The weather is not that challenging and the picturesque staples of Malta are just vibrant and visually stunning, so brisk walks and a spot of spelunking through the caves in Gozo and Malta are a must. Another great alternative is to make the most of the Maltese beaches, sit on the warm sand while it’s still roasting, take a dip in the cooling Mediterranean sea while it’s not too cold and try the fresh lampuki while they’re in season. This month we’ll be focusing on Naxxar; a great village that features gorgeous gardens and a quaint seaside village kept under its council - Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq. Take a dip in the open waters of Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, where the sea is clean and clear for the majority of the year. Lastly, don’t forget to do everything you do here in Malta with a smile, you’re in paradise after all.

Have a safe flight,

Kristina

#MALTA, THE BLOCKCHAIN ISL AND

I

magine you can trace from where each of your chicken wrap's ingredients came from, before being delivered to you on board the plane. Sounds like science fiction? The scenario is actually closer to home than you think. Blockchain – the newest technology platform that is taking many industries by storm with $1.1 billion of startup investment made in the last two years – is promising to revolutionise the way business is currently being done. As its name denotes, the technology works in ‘blocks’ or transactions on a distributed ledger, where each block is secured by cryptography and where members can access decentralised information that is transparent, immutable and secure. When a transaction is made, it is permanent and searchable, making it possible for members to view entire transaction histories. So in theory, and in a future not far off, you could soon be able to check the provenance of your next flight meal via a barcode on the packaging that takes you to its supply chain built on blockchain. The system would give you information about the producer, place of origin, production volumes, distribution data and so on. A system that is huge, in terms of traceability, control and potential.

MALTA, A BLOCKCHAIN PIONEER Every innovation separates the early adopters from the trailing laggards. Malta has jumped heart and soul onto the bandwagon of this advancement. Not only is it an early adopter, but it is also the very first country to implement a holistic legal framework for sustaining blockchain ecosystems. The enacted laws address three key issues: consumer protection, market integrity and financial stability. The agility with which Malta has moved has given it an edge over many countries. More regulation is being proposed as key stakeholders come together to work towards a common goal and to instigate a change at EU level. A larger robust structure supports new blockchain business, sustained by one of the strongest economies in the European Union, a sound banking system, favourable tax rates and a pro-business culture. In the meantime, several Blockchain giants, including Binance, BitBay and OKEx, have announced their move to Malta, where they can comfortably and swiftly operate within the country’s new regulatory framework.

MALTA IS CLOSE LIKE NEVER BEFORE TO NAILING IT AS A GLOBAL PIONEER IN BLOCKCHAIN AND CRYPTOCURRENCY.

On the local level, Malta’s appetite for the business of blockchain can be seen by a veritable flurry of activity from other areas. As of October, the University of Malta will be offering a degree in the field of blockchain. Numerous business networking events will be taking place across the island. And there’s a lot more on the cards! A new bank owned by digital coin investors, the training of civil servants in blockchain, cryptoATMs, and the Delta Summit, the government’s blockchain event of the year, aiming to bring together global leaders in the field.

World's 1st DLT Legislation

VIEWS FROM THE EXPERT Dr Jean-Philippe Chetcuti, Managing Partner of international law firm Chetcuti Cauchi Advocates, has his finger firmly on the pulse of both the local exciting developments as well as foreign trends in blockchain. “Malta is close like never before to nailing it as a global pioneer in blockchain and cryptocurrency”, he said. “If past successes like those for financial services and igaming are anything to go by, the success of this innovative industry in Malta is almost guaranteed.” Upbeat by nature and by the success of his law company’s growth in a wide range of practice areas over the years, Dr Chetcuti also has his feet firmly grounded. “There are still challenges that need to be overcome for the industry to grow sustainably and to work alongside Malta’s other well established sectors like gaming and financial services,” he said.

Chetcuti Cauchi Advocates is a law and professional services firm, with offices in Malta, Cyprus, London, Zurich and Hong Kong, advising high net worth international families and their businesses on residency & citizenship, property, corporate and tax, financial services and fintech and yachts and jets.

“Despite the world’s titan banks working together to develop a private blockchain, traditional banks locally are yet some steps behind in embracing the possibilities of trading in cryptocurrencies. Then there are issues of how to audit processes, how to really ensure member privacy, compliance to regulations, as well as the still narrow pool of talent available, in what is a very technical specialisation.” “These challenges have not deterred Malta’s appetite for innovation. Legislation now offers a comprehensive cover that strikes a balance between competing interests and that enables the industry to flourish while protecting consumers. Underpinned by a forward-looking economy, professional practitioners like ours are enthusiastic to create a new legal fabric that bridges the gap between traditional law and innovative fintech, and rising up to the challenges to give established and start-up blockchain companies an impeccable service.”

INTERVIEW

THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN VOICE WORDS ANDREI VELLA LAURENTI PHOTOGRAPHY KRIS MICALLEF

He was described by Opera Magazine as showing exceptional promise whilst the Daily Express described him as a revelation. To me Cliff Zammit Stevens is an artist with a capital A. Chatting over a coffee he told me that what he does all boils down to a process. An artistic and technical process. Mr Zammit Stevens explained that the idea for an annual concert started ten years ago. The first annual concert was held at St James Cavalier (since then this venue has changed its name to Spazju Kreattiv). Such a concert would allow the audience to witness what he had achieved musically throughout the year. Cliff Zammit Stevens started all this whilst still a student accompanied only by piano, but his annual performance quickly turned into a display of virtuosity.

To an artist like Cliff Zammit Stevens a concert is always more enriching because such a performance allows him to interact with the audience

pieces and modern renditions that will draw the crowd’s attention. He explained that every song is a journey in itself - each piece has its own mood and character that needs to be created and sustained while the song lasts. This process is repeated for every song he interprets. In an opera, the process is somewhat different because the character is ‘fixed’ and the process more linear. It is much harder to switch from Mozart to Puccini than to play Macbeth. To an artist like Cliff Zammit Stevens a concert is always more enriching because such a performance allows him to interact with the audience. He described it to me as a genuine, real experience. This year is also special for Cliff because he is about the launch the Over the years the concert was held

t is a fact that the majority of the population wishes to have straight teeth. It is also a fact that they want them white and natural looking. Patients never request crooked, yellow or poorlooking teeth. So straight, white and natural looking, are adjectives patients often use to describe the type of smile they wish to have. Patients also request that they receive the necessary treatment in the quickest time with the minimal number of injections and appointments. A typical scenario is a soon to be bride and mother of the bride. Unfortunately, time is very often an essential part of it especially when the treatment involves braces and tooth alignment. The proposition of having a treatment plan spanning over a year or two is absurd and is quickly shot down. Quick fixes are often attractive but by far not the best choice, as they tend to be non-conservative in nature and destructive towards the tooth tissue. Often, upon patient’s wishes, dentists are made to propose alternative treatment plans involving elective extractions, crown building and the fixation of porcelain veneers. This may be a controversial topic, which in some countries may even have you lose your licence. Having said that, in other countries it is done following the patients requests reasoning on the lines of the teeth are theirs and they

decide. Time and money are also factors, which push patients to opt for the second or third option of treatment leaving the unattractive first option out altogether. What is a must, is to inform the patients of all the treatment options that are available in dentistry discussing in detail their advantages and disadvantages. It is then up to the patient to choose their preferred option. Let us not forget that even dentists like providing their patients with straight, white good-looking teeth. Dentists might disagree with the patients’ choice of plan but might also understand where they are coming from for time and money are not always available. Ask your dentist.

A CASE STUDY

A middle aged lady wishes to fix her top four front teeth. She is extremely conscious of them and is always covering her mouth. As time went by, the teeth got worse. She is not interested in braces and wishes a relatively quick fix. She didn’t wish to touch any of the other teeth. Besides aesthetics her main concerns were how they would feel on her lip and whether it would have an effect on her speech. It was decided to remove the four front top teeth and place three dental implants. These implants were then restored with a porcelain bridge, straight and relatively white looking teeth.

W H AT T O E X P E C T The sight of a local feast is one that few Maltese would be unable to identify. Best described by the elaborately decorated faรงade of the parish church, clad in multicoloured lights, and street decorations similar to valances, villages take on a quaint and festive look ahead of the feast. Many residents also decorate their houses with banners, flags, lights and religious ornaments. The village square hosts a number of food stalls, typically offering fast food that visitors may enjoy as they walk around the village. One will also find traditional wooden carts selling nougat, known in Maltese as qubbajt - one of the local sweet delicacies. Other stalls would include those selling paraphernalia for children to enjoy during the feast, such as: bubble machines, illuminate toys, fire crackers, comic hats, and toys for children to prank one another with. Many of them will also be seen enjoying popcorn, candy floss or soft ice cream.

Organic clothing for girls, designed in Malta.

But perhaps the most notable elements are the distinctive noises that can be heard at a feast; the sound of the local brass band and the magnificent award-winning fireworks that may be heard throughout virtually the entirety of summer in Malta. If you pop by a local feast this September, also watch out for the local ground fireworks display.

L ANDMARKS

The glorious monument that stands forcefully tall at our capital's main gate, is the product of the late contemporary master, Vincent Apap (1909-2003). Apap's Triton Fountain goes down as one of his most celebrated works. Erected in 1959, the bronze structure that guards our city walls, is made up of three gigantic mythological tritons holding up a plate while resting on a seaweed base. Not an easy task, considering they've been sitting there for almost 70 years. Talk about endurance. It's been said, that the intention behind the work was to celebrate the link between our island and the enchanting sea that surrounds it. But sometimes even mythological gods need to be touched up; and when they do they're normally dismantled, sent to Florence in parts and cost a couple of millions to spruce up. Today, the fountain has been restored and returned to its rightful home in Valletta, welcoming guests and guiding travelling wanderers in all its magnificent aquatic glory. The Beatles once told us that all we need is love, and in 2003 acclaimed architect Richard England felt Malta needed some love too. In a time where news station headlines were dominated with horrific wars and mass killings taking place in Iraq, England stepped in to design a monument that would stand to prevail amidst the darkness that had become an unfortunate reality for so many. The ‘Love Sign’ as it has come to be known, is a pillar of solace that proudly stands bang in the centre of picturesque Spinola Bay, the heart of busy little St Julian’s. In the eyes of many. the monument was just perceived to be a large sculpture spelling out the word ‘love’ by the water’s edge. Some thought it to be an eyesore. But to most it is looked to as a beacon of hope and unity at times of crisis and strife. It is undoubtedly one of the most iconic modern monuments standing today with hundreds of thousands flocking to it, either as a meeting point or selfie safe haven. So if you came to Malta looking for love, we can assure you, we've got you covered. My next pick, is the Three Artists monument in Bisazza street, Sliema, which is a hand- crafted monument produced by Mediterranean Ceramics and sculpted by Brian Greene. The sculpture was commissioned with the intention of commemorating three of Malta’s screen and theatre heavyweights. The three artists comfortably sit in their bronze gilds, having a chat and sharing a laugh between friends. Ġemma Portelli (1932-2008), Charles Clews (1919-2009) and Victor Apap (1913-2001) hardly need any introductions to the locals, having spent the majority of their career either on any grandmother’s TV screen or rediffusion. Today this monument representing these gleeful artists invites passersby to share an Instagram story with them.

IT’S JUST A N OT H E R DAY WORDS TCD

“There’s never been a day brighter than this. There’s never been an hour finer.” thought Alistar as he clutched his papers in his hands. “Oh what a day,” he thought, “oh what an hour.” Alistar raised his heels slightly as he waited in position, tapping his toes as his neatly polished shoes hit the marble floors. Alistar stood there, at the end of the nave, his eyes focused on the altar ahead. A small bead of sweat tricked down his neck, he felt the September heat fill the room. His suit was new and a little bit scratchy, he wanted to splurge; live a little but he held back saving for a special day. Today was Alistar’s big day. As he stood in his hometown’s church, right at the centre of Naxxar he remembered the first time his mother brought him to this building of reverence. He was young, not more than 6 years old when he held his mother’s hand and took his first step inside the church. A beautiful cathedral in his eyes, full of wonder, full of awe. As he looked up he saw the paintings on the walls, the drapes fold down, tailored over the pillars that ran down the aisles. As he turned his head to get a closer look at the paintings; he caught his mother staring back at him, smiling from ear to ear. His nostalgic trip down memory lane filled his stomach with butterflies but set a glistening smile upon his face. He turned towards his guests and looked out into the crowd. At the church’s main door stood a man who subtly gave a signal. It was time. “All set Ali. Keep it cool. It’s finally happening, just as you planned it. You’ve got this,” he prepped himself with a little bit of we’ll deserved flattery. Off went the organ triggering the crowd to stand up, hands crossed loosely as they turned their heads to the door. A glow of white light shone into the church - as bright as ever. Alistar stares out, twiddling his thumbs and looking at the entrance in anticipation. As the flowers were scattered and a few photographs captured, there she stood - a shadow in the distance. Lost in the brightness of the blazing light. As the organist noted her cue, she began to descend, step after step Alistar’s heart would pound, his breath shorten until she stood right beside him. A few words were said, a few tears shed, the rice was thrown and the cake cut. So off went Alistar and his beacon of light, off to live their happy life.

IT’S EASY TO GET AROUND This is a city that is made up of vastly different neighbourhoods, with the city centre and harbour areas best and easily explored on foot and therefore perfect for a city break. If you get weary though, an efficient network of metro lines, buses, and ferries (yes, ferries!) will ensure you get to your destination in less than half an hour, be it the airport, museums or clubs, shopping malls or nature reserves in the city’s outskirts. Alternatively you can hop on a red city bike – the first half hour is free. THERE’S ALWAYS MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE. Look closely and Hamburg will reward you with wonderful hidden corners. A passage between houses on the Deichstrasse will bring you to a water platform with exquisite views on the historic buildings along the canal. In a tiny street next to the Sankt Michaelis Church hides the oldest assembly of townhouses in Europe. And walk just a few streets further and you’ll discover the gorgeous 17th and 18th century buildings of the Peterstrasse artist district. If you come on a weekend, you can experience one of the city’s distinctive traditions, - the sprawling market that pops up at dawn every Sunday along the Elbe, by the gorgeous glass-roofed Altona Fischauktionshalle. This is where Hamburg’s night and day converge; alongside the loud pleas from vendors selling everything from pike to pineapple, it is also a kind of after-hours club for all-night revellers. Having started this feature with a reference to food, its only appropriate to conclude on the same theme – minus the puns! Forget everything you associate with typical German cuisine. Typical Hamburg cuisine is, not surprisingly, centred around fish and seafood – ranging from the traditional to the extravagant. Snack on fischbrötchen packed with herring, or sample traditional seamen’s dishes and other mouth-watering fish specialities. Hanseatic traders have been slurping mouthwatering molluscs for centuries, and the ever popular Fischereihafen restaurant on the riverbank is well worth a visit. You can wash it down with tart local beer and sweeten it up with a freshly baked cinnamon franzbrötchen. Hamburg is one of the great ‘undiscovered’ cities in Europe. With its trading heritage and a strong economy, a visit here showcases a wealthy city that has risen like a phoenix from a terrible recent past. The old-world grandeur and maritime grit are today being refashioned by a spectacular building boom - but the mood is as calm as ever.

FUN FACTS EVERY SHIP RECEIVES A SPECIAL GREETING WHEN IT COMES INTO PORT

Downriver from Hamburg lies the “Willkomm-Höft” or “welcome point” which welcomes and says goodbye to every ship coming in and out of Hamburg harbour. It has the most bridges of any city in the world The city has well over 2,500 bridges, which is more than Amsterdam and Venice combined. These bridges range from road and railway bridges to bridges across the Elbe and the city’s many canals. THE FIRST MODERN ZOO WAS FOUNDED HERE

In 1907 Carl Hagenbeck Jr. took a big step for animal welfare by founding Tierpark Hagenbeck. This zoo much more closely resembled the architecture of zoos we visit nowadays, where animals are kept in large open enclosures separated from the public by moats. THE BEATLES BEGAN THEIR MUSIC CAREER IN HAMBURG

Contrary to popular belief, the Beatles got their start in Hamburg and not Liverpool. The iconic band played an estimated 273 shows in the city from 1960-1962 where they honed their skills and developed their distinctive sound. John Lennon reportedly even said “I might have been born in Liverpool - but I grew up in Hamburg”. Hamburg has the oldest Opera House in Germany Hamburg's first State Opera House opened in 1678 and continues to be used today, making it Germany's oldest opera house. HAMBURG IS HOME TO THE WORLD’S LARGEST MINI RAILWAY

In 2000, twin brothers Frederik and Gerrit Braun set about making their dream of creating the largest miniature railway in the world a reality. Miniatur Wunderland has over 50,000 feet of train track, more than 1,000 trains fitted and even a miniature airport which simulates take offs and landings with model airplanes. INFLATABLE ARMBANDS WERE INVENTED IN HAMBURG

In 1956 Bernhard Markwitz came up with the idea of inflatable arm bands after his daughter fell into a fish pond in their garden. He wanted people to enjoy water rather than see it as dangerous. and so set out to create a device to help young children learn to swim leading to ‘Schwimmflügel’, meaning ‘swimming wings’.

Hey Elin, tell us a bit about you. I’m from a very small town to the south of Stockholm in Sweden. I decided to move to Malta in summer 2014 and started to work for Videoslots that August. The company was still very small at the time, and I did not have any experience in iGaming.

Can you walk us through your typical day at the office? First I have one or two cups of coffee, depending on whether I’m working a morning or evening shift. Then I have a chat with my colleagues to get a handover, and see if there’s anything that needs my attention. During the day I’m in contact with our players via chat and email, doing my best to give them the assistance they require. As a support representative I know I’m also representing the company externally. Sometimes I hold training sessions with new CS members, where I go through real scenarios so that they can observe the whole process. This is the favourite part of my job, since it allows me to get to know my colleagues in a different way, and having someone new also helps me get a different point of view.

What are your fondest memories at Videoslots? I would say that my favourite moment was my very first day. I came to the office feeling lost, with everyone just staring at me. I think we were about 10-15 people back then, but some of those eyes staring at me belong to people with whom I now have a very close relationship. I would also say that the company trip to Cyprus in 2017 was truly special. Even if the people in support will always be the ones I feel closest with, these trips have been a great opportunity to get to know people from other departments.

A suggestion to aspiring Customer Support Agents? iGaming is full of opportunities to improve your career! It gives you a perspective from the players’ point of view, which is essential to find out what makes customers happy, and what can be improved to keep them happy.

Videoslots

What made you stay at Videoslots for so long? My colleagues, definitely. Videoslots is where I’ve met the best people since I moved to Malta. I made friends much quicker than in any other company I’ve worked with so far, and it’s like I’ve known some of the people here longer than my childhood friends.

alta may be the smallest archipelago in Europe, but there’s a potential selfie backdrop round every corner. Our photogenic islands offer a contrast of colour, history and landscape. There’s so much more to capture beyond the trending doors of the medieval old capital Mdina and vibrant fishing boats in Marsaxlokk.

Steer away from the touristic cliches and curate a social media feed with more intimate sites and diverse landscapes. Here are our recommendations of the most underrated selfie spots across Malta and Gozo: IL- G ARDJOL A , SENGLE A (ISL A)

The port city of Senglea offers a breathtaking view of the Grand Harbour and Fort St Angelo. At the tip of the promenade just behind the football pitch, is a hidden stairway leading up to a beautiful belvedere at The Gardjola Gardens. Planned by Grandmaster De La Sengle in 1551, these gardens host a watchtower which overlooks these historic bastions and various symbols are sculptured denoting watchfulness: the eye, the ear and the crane bird.

73

SUNSE T, BAĦRI JA

Deep in the west of the island, is an unassuming rural village called Baħrija (moth) offering impeccable views, which stretch up to the south-west of Gozo and on clear nights and also Sicily. It is a good place to enjoy an evening stroll especially in time for sunset. The tangymauve skies that are unveiled at a 360° stretch over the countryside sets the perfect scene for a silhouette selfie.

SANTA M ARI JA CHAPEL , COMINO

The tiny undeveloped island, famous among tourists and selfie-takers for its crystal-clear turquoise waters has a quaint chapel just a footpath off the coast of the Blue Lagoon. If you’re into adventures in the wilderness, grab your flip-flops, sarong and selfie-stick and prowl for this quaint chapel. Legend says it was built in lieu of another chapel which was, on numerous occasions, ravaged by pirates.

GIRNA — FAW WAR A

This picturesque cobble-stone hut (girna) is possibly one of the laststanding countryside nooks of its kind. It overlooks distant sea views and untouched fields, surrounded by silence and natural beauty. The girna was used by farmers to store their tools, as shelter for livestock or as a short-term dwelling when work in the fields became intensive. The opening of these huts always faces east - welcoming sunrise. If you’re looking for a unique selfie that captures Malta’s past, put on your hiking boots, grab your rental car and enjoy the route to the limits of Siġġiewi.

BELVEDERE , TRIQ IŻ-ŻEW WIEQ IN QAL A (GOZO)

Breathtaking views can be admired from the Qala Belvedere, where you can observe the Gozo Ferry drifting across the channel between the two main islands. You can also capture a good picture from the small courtyard in front of the little church known as Saint Mary of the Rocks (Il-Madonna tal-Blat) which faces Comino. It is told that this church was built so that the islanders on Comino could follow Holy Mass from across the sea when it was too rough for a priest to cross to them.

VALLETTA WATERFRONT: THE HISTORIC DESTINATION WITH THE COLOURED DOORS

T

he Valletta Waterfront combines food, retail and entertainment within a maritime hub, which for the past years has proved to be a highly popular destination. The small chapel of the Flight to Egypt by the Holy Family further creates a unique ‘village’ ambience. For those in search of a relaxing time with good food and entertainment, the Valletta Waterfront’s many restaurants and bars present a variety of offerings catering to different tastes, with dining right at the water’s edge. The establishments’ indoor dining areas are situated inside the tastefully refurbished, historical stores, originally constructed by Grand Master Pinto in 1752. Today, ushering in a modern era, the iconic doors have been revived with an artistic impression of colour, representing the storage of goods from days past: blue for fish, green for produce, yellow for wheat and red for wine. An exquisite place at any time of the day - relax with a coffee in the morning watching the small boats bobbing along, occasionally the bigger cruise ships with their bustling activity; a bite to eat at

lunchtime; or a lovely meal of whatever takes your fancy at sundown, with magnificent views of the historic Grand Harbour.

ARRIVING TO THE VALLETTA WATERFRONT • Valletta circular bus (133)

Browse the shopping outlets for interesting gifts including local trinkets – from ceramics, mouth-blown glass, jewellery, to that book you’ve been meaning to buy and more.

Enjoy Maltese Nights on Thursday evenings: patrons can go back in time through the Maltese Islands’ history and experience traditional folk dancing, falconry displays, the terramaxka – a musical instrument which was popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and Maltese games, amongst other activities. Participation in all activities is free of charge.

• Electric cabs are available from just outside Valletta.

Meanwhile little guests can enjoy free activities including: balloon modelling, face painting, crafts, games, colouringins, meet & greets with all-time favourite characters, puppet shows, bouncy castles and more, every Saturday evening (19.30hrs onwards) and Sunday afternoons (12.30hrs onwards).

nnovation is a word used and abused. Every one of us seems to have his own definition of innovation. And all of us, in our business ventures, in our jobs, in our daily lives need to find unconventional solutions to the challenges around us – all of us are bound to innovate.

Summit aims to engage, inspire and get the audience to question the status quo while broadening their horizons with new, unconventional, creative ways of overcoming challenges, be it at organisational, local, international or personal levels across various industries.

What most of us do not get is that innovation is not that buzzword we use whenever something new crops up in our company. Innovation is a topic that has been deeply researched both academically and commercially.

Attendees will participate in a full day of keynotes, presentations, expert panels, workshops and networking opportunities that explore the best methods of adopting innovation.

It is in this context that on the 12th October 2018 Malta will be hosting the second edition of the Malta Innovation Summit. After a very successful first edition in October 2017, the Malta Innovation Summit returns with a bigger and better second edition taking place at the Intercontinental Arena Conference Centre in St. Julian’s. The summit brings together top international innovation stakeholders, thinkers and doers to discuss, learn and share best practices of innovation. It is a gathering for top executives, CEOs, educators, professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers, leaders, innovators who are constantly pushing innovation within their organisation and are eager to discover and learn new ways and methodologies of innovation from the innovation community. With a varied line up of expert international keynote speakers, expert panels and workshops, the Malta Innovation

The Malta Innovation Summit is not just a gathering for startups and disruptive technologies - it aims to promote action in innovation at large. Innovation at a national level, innovation in companies, both startups and established ones and innovation at a personal and cultural level. Apart from the summit itself, we are also spearheading the Malta Innovation Forum and an Innovation Challenge. Topics include: research, intrapreneurship, digital transformation, entrepreneurship, start-ups & scale-ups, co-creating with clients, funding innovation, innovation from blockchain, crowdsourcing of ideas, open innovation, impact innovation, ideation, creativity and design thinking. Take this opportunity to fly back to Malta to innovate, learn, network and experience this gem in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.

PUNCTUALITY AWARD FOR AIR MALTA IN RUSSIA

M

oscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport awarded Air Malta for its punctuality in is operations in the first half of 2018. The national airline came 3rd in the

category for foreign airlines with annual passengers of less than 100,000. During this period Sheremetyevo serviced 20 million passengers, 13% more than in the same period last year. Commenting on this success Silvio Falzon, Chief Operations Officer of Air Malta said, “Every year we operate 15,000 flights and every flight is a tightly knit operation during which we strive hard to ensure an on-time departure. From time to time we face delays due to several reasons including but not limited to weather, air traffic control slot timings, strikes and technical issues. During such occasions our staff do their utmost to minimise inconvenience to passengers both in Malta and throughout our network. This award gives us the courage and enthusiasm to continue working hard and improving our on time performance.” Sheremetyevo International Airport is the largest Russian airport in terms of passenger and freight traffic, take-off and landing operations, the area of the airport complex and the capacity of the cargo complex. The Sheremetyevo route network comprises over 200 destinations.

Indeed, the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. The consumption of one’s own alcoholic beverages inflight goes against Air Malta policy.

Smoking is prohibited from when you leave the terminal building until you arrive to the terminal building. USE OF PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES ON BOARD TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

Any devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile-phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities (e.g. Bluetooth and Wi-fi) are switched off. Alternatively, if the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, takeoff and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.

These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.

L APTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS

ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?

Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation. CAN I USE HEADPHONES? Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.

Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.

I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN … … portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.

If you require more information, please refer to the table below which includes a list of Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) which can be used onboard Air Malta flights by phase of flight. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of our cabin crew if you have any further questions.
