If the cover of this month’s Connection didn’t grab your attention, I honestly don’t know what to say.

All of those delicious foods are made right here in Bismarck-Mandan and for a while now, and they deserve some attention. Fortunately, the July Connection has traditionally been the issue where we spotlight our community’s entrepreneurs. So it dawned on us; why not make it about food? It didn’t take our team too much longer to put together a list of area entrepreneurs who are making their own food products that we want to share with you. The result was another edition of the Connection that we’re really proud of and think you’ll enjoy.

Ok, I’m getting hungry, on to another topic.

As you likely know, we’re currently searching for a new Chamber EDC President & CEO. Current Chamber EDC President & CEO Brian Ritter’s last day in the office will be Friday, July 7 and, for the past several weeks, we’ve been actively engaged in a nation-wide search for his successor. To lead this effort, we have convened a dedicated Search Committee that includes members of the Chamber EDC Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and Membership who have helped us post the position across the country, narrow down the list of candidates and facilitate interviews. I’m happy to report that the process has gone very well and I’m hopeful that we’ll have a new leader very soon.

It's been a busy summer and that’s not the only thing occupying our time. One of the Chamber EDC’s five core functions is policy development. As the business community’s advocate at the local, state and federal levels of government, that work never stops. Most recently, we convened a meeting of the four political subdivisions impacted by the possible reinstatement of the Bismarck Renaissance Zone: the City of Bismarck, Burleigh County, Bismarck Parks & Recreation and Bismarck School District. At the state level, we’re already working on our 2025 Legislative Agenda and hosted a meeting of Bismarck-Mandan legislators to start that work. At the federal level, we’re working to schedule meetings with each member of our Congressional Delegation to discuss issues affecting the Bismarck-Mandan business community just as we have in years past. I’m incredibly grateful to our Government Affairs Committee Chair Marnie Walth, our Staff and Leadership for all of their hard work in making sure we’re active on all three fronts.

Now for something a little ‘lighter’ and still food-related, lunch.

For the past several summers, the Chamber EDC has hosted Lunch on the Patio. Three times each summer we host lunch right here at the Chamber EDC as a small token of our appreciation to all of our members. Each and every Chamber EDC Member is invited to come to our patio for a lunch of burgers and brats, to enjoy the great view and network with other members. We’ve seen the attendance at this event continue to grow and we couldn’t be happier. If you haven’t had a chance to join us, you’re personally invited to attend the next Lunch on the Patio on Wednesday, July 12 from 11:30am – 1:00pm. You won’t be disappointed.

It’s a very busy time at the Chamber EDC right now, so I want to end by thanking our dedicated and talented team for all of their hard work, and I thank YOU for your continued support of the important work that we do.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP: MADE IN BIS-MAN

Entrepreneurship is thriving on the prairie. From events like 1 Million Cups to Mandan’s Business Pitch Challenge, everything points to fertile entrepreneurial soil in Bismarck-Mandan.

This year’s Entrepreneur Issue focuses on products made in Bismarck-Mandan. Whether you are looking for Space Aliens BBQ sauce at the grocery store or Laughing Sun beer at the liquor store, you will find unique products created right in our community.

SPACE ALIENS

Founders: Mort Bank, Dave Glaser, Brad Bender

Founded: 1997

Employees: 150 among five businesses

Product: BBQ sauces and spices

How would you describe your business in 30 words or less?

We’re a fun place for families to go to with award-winning food.

Mort Bank has been in the restaurant business since he was 15-years-old. When Bank started working at McDonald’s in 1962, hamburgers cost $0.15. Fries cost $0.10. There were no drive-thrus, no Big Macs, no breakfasts. There were no female employees. Unless you were the wife or daughter of the owner, women weren’t allowed to work at McDonald’s. Young men had to look clean cut with a crew cut or short hair. Bank started working at McDonald’s for $0.90 per hour.

When Bank wanted to open a business after college, he had a sense that McDonald’s franchises were a good business model.

“I liked what I saw when I worked there,” Bank said. “McDonald’s had high standards and a very limited menu. Obviously, it became very successful.”

Bank opened his first two McDonald’s franchises in Minot and Nebraska in 1970. He opened his first Bismarck location in 1971.

“I’m glad it was Bismarck that we moved to,” Bank said. “I love Bismarck.”

Bank said he has always been fascinated by themed restaurants like Planet Hollywood or Hard Rock Café. He decorated his McDonald’s franchises with themes like sports memorabilia, western cowboys, and the McRock-n-Roll Cafe on Main Avenue in Bismarck.

Bank was a McDonald’s franchisee for more than 25 years. By the time he sold his restaurants back to McDonald’s in 1995, he had seven franchises across North Dakota.

“If I was going to leave McDonald’s and open my own restaurant, I wanted to do something different,” Bank said.

The first thing he did was trademark the Space Aliens name. When Bank sold his McDonald’s franchises, he brought a few key employees with him. Dave Glaser had been a supervisor. Brad Bender was a general manager. They eventually became partners in the business. Bank’s first choice for a location was to be in proximity to Kirkwood Mall, but he couldn’t find 1.5 acres needed for the building and parking. He found a parcel of land at the intersection of State Street and Century Avenue, but in the mid-1990s that was “the end of town.”

“The city said, ‘We project that corner to be the busiest intersection in town within 15 years,’” Bank said.

FEATURE | CONNECTION 4 4 Connection

Bank got a patent on a French fry holder with two dipping sauces. The menu would be based on Bank’s original recipes.

In the mid-1990s, Bank entered a barbecue cook-off in Kansas City. He entered the ribs and chicken contests, competing against chefs from Texas, Kansas City, Georgia, and the Carolinas — all places famous for their BBQ.

“They said, ‘This guy doesn’t have a chance. Do they even have barbecue in North Dakota?’” Bank said.

Even Bank admits North Dakota doesn’t have a strong barbecue cuisine. That didn’t stop Bank from winning Best Ribs in America. And best BBQ chicken.

Space Aliens opened in January 1997.

“The weather was terrible,” Bank said. “We had wall-towall customers for three to four months. Dave and I lost 35 pounds... There was a lot to be done. It turned out wonderful.”

Bank said 85 percent of new, original-concept restaurants go out of business within the first few years.

“That scared me,” Bank said. “Are people going to think I’m crazy or are people going to love it? People loved it.”

After surviving the first few years, Bank said one reason that restaurants fail is that the owners don’t reinvest their money into the restaurant.

“They don’t change their menu; they don’t change their décor,” Bank said. “We have added onto our building, made our bar bigger, made our game room bigger. Other restaurants get old and tired. You can tell they haven’t put in new booths, new décor. They start looking tired, and then they’re gone.”

After being in the restaurant business for over 60 years, Bank estimates he has had approximately 40,000 employees. Most of them are in the age range of 15- to 25-years-old.

“It’s like having that many kids,” Bank said. “You get to know their problems. I still remember some of their names. When you’ve had 40,000 kids, that’s quite an experience.”

After making his money as a franchisee, Bank has created franchises of his Space Aliens restaurant. Bank jokes that franchisees are “the biggest whiners,” because they own their own restaurants. At the same time, Bank said some of the best ideas originate from franchisees, such as the Big Mac and the Egg McMuffin at McDonald’s.

Considering how many original restaurants fail within the first few years, Bank considers it an accomplishment that Space Aliens has been open more than 25 years.

“I wanted to create something fun and different unlike anything else in the world,” Bank said, “and I guess I did.”

SIMPLE SUGAR

Proprietors: Mark and Rebecca Binstock

Founded: 2018

Employees: 3

Product: Cotton candy spun from beet sugar with North Dakota berries or flavors

How would you describe your business in 30 words or less?

We spin cotton candy that is focused on local flavors without any additional preservatives, additives, or artificial dyes. It is produced in an allergen-friendly, licensed commercial kitchen.

Rebecca and Mark Binstock had no experience in cotton candy. Rebecca is a lawyer. Mark is an engineer. They had no experience in cotton candy, except that Rebecca loves it. A lot.

“We would never go to the zoo without buying cotton candy for Rebecca and the kids,” Mark said.

When the Binstocks’ 9-year-old daughter developed food allergies, it was a stressful time. The first time she tasted eggs as a baby, she broke out in hives within seconds, and her tongue swelled. Now, she has 15 diagnosed food allergies, which makes birthday treats hard. For their daughter’s 4th birthday party, she requested cotton candy instead of a cake.

After purchasing their own cotton candy machine, the Binstocks began experimenting with North Dakota ingredients. They spin cotton candy using American Crystal Sugar which is made from sugar beets in North Dakota and Minnesota. They focus on uniquely-North Dakota flavors that they can harvest themselves — juneberries, chokecherries, rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries, and honeyberries.

“A lot of our summer is spent finding fruit and harvesting it,” Rebecca said.

No, the Binstock kids don’t help spin the cotton candy. That would be far too messy. But they do spend their summers helping their parents pick berries and harvest local produce.

“It’s all about flavor for us,” Rebecca said. “Each fruit requires a different recipe. Water content in fruit is different. I have learned where to harvest the chokecherries and where not to. There is an art to it.”

The Binstocks started their business by operating under the North Dakota Cottage Foods Act. It allowed them to produce cotton candy from their home.

“We learned a lot about the Cottage Foods Act,” Mark said. “That allows small businesses to get into the business and start selling their product. Once we got in, we understood the limitations of the Cottage Foods Act.”

They couldn’t sell their cotton candy wholesale. Even though they are passionate about producing their product in an allergen-friendly environment, they couldn’t advertise that on their labeling.

“We spend a lot of time focusing on what goes into our cotton candy so that parents don’t have to think about it,” Mark said.

Even though the Binstocks had just built a brand-new home, they decided to build a different house across the street. The first thing they designed in the blueprints was a commercial kitchen. The Binstocks worked with the City of Bismarck Planning and Zoning Department for over six months to make sure their commercial kitchen would meet city codes, before they ever started construction on the home.

FEATURE | CONNECTION 6 4 Connection

“Plan what you can,” Mark said. “There are some things we did that were very, very right. We knew we had to play by the rules. We had to find the rule book. Who regulates the space we wanted to sell product in? We had to make sure we weren’t going to build a kitchen that would fail inspection. Do your homework.”

At the same time, Rebecca said you can’t sit and plan forever. At some point, you must dive in.

“It can be really scary,” Rebecca said. “You’re worried and you’re terrified that you’re going to make mistakes. You have to accept that you will make mistakes. You’re going to fix it, and you have to move on. You just have to do it. If you have an idea and you think it has value, don’t sit back and be scared. I wish someone had told us a long time ago to just go with it. If it flops, you gain a ton of experience and you move on.”

BEARSCAT BAKEHOUSE

Proprietors: Kevin and Tina Cavanagh

Founded: 2006

The donut shop was rebranded as Bearscat Bakehouse in 2011.

Employees: 85 employees across locations in Bismarck, Mandan, Minot, and Oregon

Product: Freshly-baked donuts

How would you describe your business in 30 words or less?

We make a high-quality donut at a fair, family price.

Earlier in his career, Kevin Cavanagh managed everything from a grain elevator to a hardware store. But after his third major job change, he was sick of working for other people.

“We wanted to do something on our own, and we wanted to do something fun,” Cavanagh said. “I want to do something where somebody comes in and they’re smiling and want to have a good time.”

In 2006, Cavanagh bought an existing donut shop, and the fun began. In 2011, he created his own donut recipes and rebranded the store as Bearscat Bakehouse.

“Instead of ordering it from a factory, we wanted to have the freedom to make our donuts, decorate them and put goofy stuff on the inside or outside,” Cavanagh said, People already liked apple fritters. Why not try a pineapple fritter? Rum raisin was horrible. A mint donut tasted like toothpaste. On the other hand, a chocolate mint donut featuring Andes Mints was a much better success. This summer, Cavanagh has brought back several seasonal favorites. The Mango Tango donut has mango on the inside and Orange Tang powder on the outside. Another mango-filled donut includes Tajin spices with chili peppers, lime, and salt.

“Some of the craziest flavors have resulted in the biggest success,” Cavanagh said. “The Elvis is banana-filled with peanut butter icing, bacon on top, and chocolate drizzle. We still bring that one back quite a bit.”

Bearscat Bakehouse has expanded rapidly since 2011. There are now three locations across Bismarck-Mandan. A Minot shop opened in 2018. The drive-thru line was so long that Cavanagh saw at least one car buy a dozen donuts, drive to the back of the line, eat their donuts, and refill their box when they got to the window.

In 2019 and 2021 Cavanagh opened two locations in Oregon. The flavors are a bit different. Marionberry, a local berry, is popular there. Whereas, in North Dakota customers are more accepting of the bearscat, a donut that makes a cheeky reference to bear scat. The name bearscat is completely unrelated to bears or scat. It’s an old cowboy term for donuts that Cavanagh found in a novel by North Dakota western writer Louis L’amour.

On a slow day, Cavanagh estimates they bake 8,000 donuts across six locations. On National Donut Day, the first Friday in June, Cavanagh estimates they made 20,000 donuts.

“I remember going to the store with my dad and getting a dozen donuts on a Saturday,” Cavanagh said. “We don’t want to get super expensive. I want the kids to have an experience picking out donuts with their family.

FEATURE | CONNECTION 8 4 Connection

Cavanagh’s own kids don’t just pick out their own donuts with dad. They get to create their own businesses with dad. Cavanagh’s two older kids — Madison and Makenna — created, founded, and ultimately sold Luigi’s Ice Cream Truck. His two younger kids — Mariah and Zane — created, founded, and work with Fizzily, which specializes in gourmet popcorn and custom sodas.

“Right now, our big plan is to expand Fizzily. If we could find a place in south Bismarck, I would open another Fizzily tomorrow,” Cavanagh said. “Bismarck-Mandan is phenomenal, (some of) the best cities we’ve worked with. Bismarck-Mandan is so good.”

LAUGHING SUN BREWING

Proprietors: Mike Frohlich, Colton Shoults, Jared Shoults, James Eastin, and Matt French

Founded: 2012

Employees: 45

Product: Craft beer

How would you describe your business in 30 words or less?

Laughing Sun creates community through beer, barbecue, and live music.

Mike Frohlich has seen the ups and downs of an entrepreneurial venture. He went through multiple business partners at the beginning of his beer business before finding the right partners. He said the venture was undercapitalized for years. The restaurant side of the business was “bleeding out.”

“It takes persistence,” Frohlich said. “It took three years to get this business going. We almost went out of business at one point. You’ve got to keep driving. You’ve got to keep grinding.”

Frohlich began brewing beer at a restaurant in Dickinson in the 1990s. It wasn’t until 2012 — after a major career change — that he turned his hobby into a business.

“I fell in love with the chemistry of brewing,” Frohlich said. “Five degrees difference in mash temperature makes a completely different beer. I love the creative side of it as well. Nowadays, you can make beer taste like anything you want.”

Before Frohlich could open his business, he worked with the City of Bismarck to create the Class O liquor license that would allow a microbrewery to operate. After founding Laughing Sun Brewing in downtown Bismarck, Frohlich partnered with brothers Colton and Jared Shoults as well as James Eastin and moved to their current location on Front Avenue in 2018. The bigger location allowed them to expand live music and the food menu.

“We don’t just want customers,” Frohlich said. “We’re trying to build fans.”

Laughing Sun Brewing is looking to expand, and they have the option to buy their building in 2026. The larger space will allow expansion of their live music and events venue.

After more than a decade in the business, Frohlich no longer has to put in 70-hour work weeks.

“You had better have passion for it,” Frohlich said. “Get a good team around you. Make sure you treat your team well. I’ve never asked anybody to do something that I haven’t done myself. I’ve cleaned a lot of toilets in this business. If you can grind along with them, you’re going to have a better team.”

FEATURE | CONNECTION 10 4 Connection

Jake Kubik has made the intentional choice to keep his business small. Kubik and his wife started baking sourdough bread as a hobby. They got good at it, cofounded the Lincoln Farmers Market, and began selling at market. Last year, they began creating products like hummus and hot buttered rum batter in a commercial kitchen so that they could sell those items at local retails. Then, things got really busy.

“We had to make the decision to either expand and bring on an employee or table the hummus and focus on growing our own family,” Kubik said. “That was a hard decision to make and we’re very proud of that decision. The goal this year is to focus on producing solely out of our kitchen our sourdough and hummus products.”

Kubik focuses on sourcing local ingredients. His 3-year-old sourdough starter is fed with 100 percent North Dakota-grown hard red spring wheat. The chickpeas used in his hummus are from a farm north of Minot. Kubik is also passionate about the health benefits of fermentation and its impact on the human body and the microbiome in the gut.

“The education on fermentation is equally if not more important to us than actually making sourdough,” Kubik said. “We don’t just focus on selling a product to our customer, but what kind of product is our customer actually eating?”

Kubik is proud of his small business, which he has chosen to keep small.

“You don’t need a lot of capital to start every business,” Kubik said. “We started with less than $500 and grew organically as people started to purchase our product.”

COPPER DOG CAFE

Tell us about yourself and your role within your business.

A: We are Cathy Ehlis and Brittany Kennedy, the motherdaughter team from Mandan. We own and assist our management team in the operation of Copper Dog Cafe and the Mini Gym on Main Street in Mandan.

MEMBER SINCE 2021

Briefly tell us the history behind Copper Dog Cafe and how you got started.

A: As long time citizens of Mandan we wanted to bring a special business and atmosphere to Mandan, somewhere that could add value to our Main Street and also be a place where anyone can feel comfortable. We purchased the building in 2019 and created the concept of gourmet waffles and hand-crafted coffee as a way to bring something that no other community in North Dakota has. Our diverse menu has something for everyone. We have an outdoor patio, a kids play area that is always full of smiling kids and the Mini Gym, a youth gymnastics and fitness area for kids 0-6 for classes and also open play time on specific times and days.

Copper Dog Cafe have been Chamber EDC members since 2021. Cathy Ehlis & Brittany Kennedy

How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted Copper Dog Cafe?

A: While our customer base is very diverse, the young family has been our most popular. Bismarck and Mandan attracting more and more young families creates a larger customer base for us, and it’s obvious when you come into our store. We love having a fun atmosphere where you can hear kids playing, friends catching up and smell all the wonderful smells!

What trends are taking place in your industry?

A: There are a number of trends converting the landscape of the food industry, and keeping up can be difficult and leave your business behind quickly. Adapting to online and mobile ordering, creating a welcoming and community-focused atmosphere where people are comfortable visiting, and making the primary intentions of your business to be centered around customer experience is crucial to keeping up with the changes.

Have there been any monumental changes within your industry that you’ve had to deal with?

A: We’ve found that in order to be successful in the food industry, and even moreso in the cafe experience, you need to keep up with technology by offering multiple ways to order and interacting with customers on the social media platforms where they can find you. Not only that, but you need to constantly find new ways to drive both new and returning customers through menu changes and specialty offerings. We have had great reviews of our monthly waffle specials, coffee flights and different drink menus that change with the seasons.

What does the future Copper Dog Cafe look like and the industry as a whole look like to you?

A: The future is bright for Copper Dog. We’ve been extremely blessed to have a supportive community and we’re dedicated to supporting our community in return. On any given weekend you can find organizations, sports teams and clubs at Copper Dog promoting their events or raising funds for programs. We love to support these groups and want to members of our community create support for their passions beyond us writing a donation check or providing an auction item.

We are also constantly shifting processes, equipment and our layout to provide the best customer experience and be the most efficient we can be. The Copper Dog you experience today is a far more positive experience than it was when we opened in 2019 and our team is working very hard to make sure your experience in our cafe is better with each visit.

Copper Dog Cafe became a Chamber EDC member in 2021, why do you continue to renew?

A: Just as we love to be a member of our general community, we enjoy being a part of the innovative and game-changing business community. Through the Chamber EDC we are able to create relationships that help us make better decisions and appeal to a larger audience. We’re grateful for the incredible business community that we have in Bismarck and Mandan!

What should other Chamber EDC members know about Copper Dog Cafe that may assist them?

A: We cater too! Not only is Copper Dog Cafe an incredible location for visiting but we have the cutest food trailer and offer both on-site and delivery options for catering events large and small. From a 10 person lunch to a 150 person wedding, we can help you provide the most memorable meal to customers, guests and employees.

We’re so grateful for everyone who has allowed us to keep our doors open. It was a difficult time to open in 2019 and survive the following years but the community has been supportive and provided us the necessary feedback for us to get better each and every day. Thank you to all of our past and future waffle and coffee lovers!

ACCEPTING LEADERSHIP APPLICATIONS FOR 2023-2024

Leadership Bismarck-Mandan is now accepting applications for the Class of 2024. Up to 18 applicants will be accepted into the program. Participants delve into today’s most compelling issues.

Community experts create issue day sessions on topics relevant to the Bismarck-Mandan area, including: economic development, energy, agriculture, legislation, political involvement, human services, law enforcement, military, emergency services, arts, leisure, healthcare, and education.

Most issue days are a half day. Highlights of the program include a full day at the Capitol during the legislative session, a full day retreat, and a graduation ceremony. Following the issue days, the class will divide into groups, select a community project they are passionate about and work to make that field project into reality.

Applications are available online at www.bismarckmandan. com/Leadership. Any questions, contact Cathryn at 701223-5660. Applications are due Aug. 1, 2023. Program begins Sept. 20, 2023. Tuition is $650.

LARSON WINS LBMAA DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA AWARD

Amber Larson was awarded the Leadership Bismarck-Mandan Alumni Association Distinguished Alumna Award for 2023 at the Leadership Bismarck-Mandan graduation. Each year an award is presented to a past graduate of the Leadership Bismarck-Mandan program who has used leadership knowledge and skills to benefit Bismarck-Mandan. Larson graduated from Leadership Bismarck-Mandan in 2018.

Amber Larson is a great leader in Bismarck-Mandan. She is employed by Bartlett & West, and she serves on the Chamber EDC Board of Directors. Amber Larson and her husband, Jon, own Larson’s Tattooing in Mandan and have been great leaders to the other small business owners in the community. She served as Mandan City Commissioner for a four-year term — part of which was during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was not afraid to dig into the details, ask questions, and ultimately make the best decision for her community — even if that meant putting her own opinions to the side.

During Amber Larson’s term as a Mandan City Commissioner, she brought back the Youth Commission, which has now evolved into a Youth Engagement Initiative to give youth a voice in the community, help give them real-world experience to be leaders in their community and hopefully want to return to the community to raise their family one day. Her employer has said “Through her leadership within our company and the region, Amber exemplifies Bartlett & West’s purpose of serving others and leading our communities to a better tomorrow.”

HEARTVIEW FOUNDATION UNVEILS REFRESHED LOGO

Heartview, founded in 1964, is thrilled to unveil a refreshed logo just prior to the organization's 60th anniversary.

Heartview’s previous logo depicted a medallion or coin like those commonly used to mark sobriety milestones. Heartview patients are given one of these physical medallions upon completion of treatment services. The previous logo will continue to be used for the medallions and will remain on the exterior of Heartview’s building.

The Heartview lantern remains the centerpiece of the modernized logo, representing hope for a new life.

“The medallion remains an important part of Heartview’s history,” says Heartview Executive Director Kurt Snyder. “We hope the refreshed logo will reflect Heartview’s dedication to using evidence-based, innovative practices while treating our patients. Due to ever-evolving research in the addiction field, treatment at Heartview today is much different than it was when we began in 1964 and our more modern branding reflects that.”

The updated logo is the third logo the organization has used since its inception in 1964. The previous logo was utilized since the 1980’s.

Q: WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT WAYS TO DISPOSE OF A PROPERTY?

A: There are many ways to sell a commercial property which include Contract for Deed (C4D), Lease Option to Purchase, Purchase Option or Sale Lease Back.

A Contract for Deed is when the Seller provides the financing and earns interest from the Buyer until the mortgage is paid and the Buyer then acquires the title to the property. A Lease Option to Purchase is simply a lease with a clause that allows the Tenant/Buyer to purchase the property at the end of the lease term. A Purchase Option allows the Buyer to deposit an amount (option money) to “hold” the property for a pre-determined purchase price at a future date. If the Buyer exercises the option, the transaction commences and the option money is applied to the purchase price. If the Buyer does not exercise the option, the option money becomes the property of the Seller. And lastly, a Sale Lease Back (SLB), is when the Seller remains in the property as a tenant but turns their equity into cash. The investor now owns the property with tenant equity from the Seller. Each option has specific tax ramifications and we can advise you of your options. We’d welcome your call at (701) 222-0232 or email to george@risepropertybrokers. com.

Q: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHEMICAL AND MINERAL SUNSCREEN?

A: Chemical Sunscreen works by absorbing UV rays and turning them into heat, while Mineral Sunscreen creates a physical barrier that reflects UV rays away. Both Chemical Sunscreen and Mineral Sunscreen are deemed safe for use by the FDA. Depending on your skin both come with their own pros and cons. Chemical Sunscreen tends to be easier to apply, however you must apply 20-30 minutes before you go outside. Chemical Sunscreen is not the best option for sensitive skin. Chemical Sunscreen can cause reactions for sensitive skin and worsen melasma and rosacea.

Mineral Sunscreen can leave a white cast and be harder to apply. This problem can be eliminated by getting a high-quality or tinted Mineral SPF. Mineral Sunscreen pros far outweigh the cons. Mineral Sunscreen starts working immediately when applied, so no need to apply 20 minutes before sun exposure. True Mineral Sunscreen only uses Zinc or Titanium Dioxide, due to this it is known to be reef safe and environmentally friendly, unlike Chemical Sunscreen. While both sunscreens are deemed safe for use, Mineral may be best for consumers concerned about long term exposure to chemical ingredients.

Q: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF WORKING AT ROERS?

A: Most people think of benefits with a company as being health, dental, and vision insurance, 401K, etc. At Roers we offer competitive benefits such as those and more, but also some benefits of working at Roers are that is we are a family-owned company, and it truly feels like a family. We know the names of all our employees, we host family-oriented events throughout the year to get to know the families and to thank them for allowing their loved ones the time they spend each day at work.

While we accomplish large projects and goals, we aren’t so large that our mission and core values are lost or just sit on a shelf. We work hard to live those core values and model them for others, building a strong team and community. Another benefit is we are diverse in our work. Our divisions include development, construction, property management (commercial and residential) as well as real estate with offices in Fargo, Dickinson, Bismarck, and Minot. Q: DO I NEED TO SPEND TIME PREPARING AND REVIEWING WRITTEN CHANGE ORDERS TO MY CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT?

A: Yes! A change order is simply an amendment to an existing contract. Most change orders change the cost for a property owner and change the scope of work for the contractor. While verbal change orders may be binding based on the factual situation, without a written change order signed by both parties, either party may have a legal basis for refusing to pay for labor or materials or for refusing to perform a particular task. Given time constraints typically involved in construction, field conditions often result in verbal change orders between the parties. However, verbal change orders are fertile ground for future conflicts, and are far likelier to result in nonpayment and, potentially, litigation; both of which harm relationships, reputations, and bottom lines. While perhaps counterintuitive, taking time to carefully prepare and review written change orders that include a description of the changed scope of work, any cost increase or decrease, and an updated construction timeline ensures both the contractor and owner are on the same page. Documented change orders save both parties time by avoiding arguments and can save contractors from spending money on labor or materials that an owner later refuses to pay for due to a dispute.

Q: SHOULD I HIRE INTERNALLY OR OUTSOURCE MY MARKETING?

A: I’d encourage you to consider a few factors:

Expertise and Resources: Hiring an inhouse marketer can be great if you need one skill set and have a defined role. However, outsourcing allows you to partner with a diverse team of industry experts who can confidently guide you forward.

Cost and Flexibility: An in-house team can give long-term stability, but the need and benefits must outweigh the costs of salaries and training. Outsourcing offers flexibility by paying only for the services you need (without overhead costs and management) and can offer a much quicker turnaround.

Scalability and Adaptability: If your needs fluctuate or you require unique campaigns, outsourcing can be beneficial. Agencies can adjust strategies, allocate resources, bring in extra expertise, and complement your in-house efforts.

Remember, there’s no “one-size-fits-all” approach. Sometimes internal marketing is best, other times it's outsourcing, and in many cases, a mix of both can bring major success. Ultimately, the decision depends on your business's circumstances, goals, and budget.

Q: WHAT ENHANCEMENTS HAVE THE BISMARCK CANCER CENTER MADE TO ASSURE THEY PROVIDE STATE-OF-THE-ART RADIATION TREATMENT TO OUR REGION?

A: In the rapidly evolving field of radiation oncology, technological advancements have played an essential role in improving patient care and treatment outcomes. The Bismarck Cancer Center is excited to announce that our third treatment machine update is complete! In the summer of 2021, as part of the Center's expansion, BCC added an Elekta Versa HD, which features next-generation technology designed to enable radiotherapy delivery with the precision necessary for state-of-the-art treatment. Later that year, one of the existing machines was upgraded to match the latest Versa machine. With the most recent update, the Center can now accommodate more patients and perform more radiation treatments. Three matching machines offer advantages in capacity, efficiency, flexibility, and continuity of care.
