At the beginning of each year, the communications team at the Chamber EDC puts together a preliminary editorial calendar to plan the feature stories for each edition of the Connection. This process not only organizes the team but also generates some great ideas, including this month’s cover feature; the impact of the military on Bismarck-Mandan. Since we’re not home to a large military installation like the Air Force bases in Minot or Grand Forks, it can sometimes be easy to assume the military has less impact on our community.

However, I think that this month’s cover feature will help change that.

Bismarck-Mandan has TWO military installations-- one at both Fraine Barracks located near the Liberty Memorial Bridge and another at the National Guard Armory near Exit 161 on I94. While these are outward signs of the military’s presence, the people who serve at these installations have the most impact on our communities. Whether active duty or reserve, Bismarck-Mandan is home to thousands of people currently serving with our branches of military. What’s more is that they’re doing so while also participating in our community as business owners, dedicated staff, or community leaders. This month’s Connection will spotlight not only the military’s presence in our community via their facilities, but their volunteerism in the business world.

After you read these stories, I’m confident you’ll clearly see that military impact as you’re out and about in Bismarck-Mandan this summer. Speaking of which, summer is (finally) here!

We have a great lineup of Chamber EDC events for you to take advantage of over the coming months. The Chamber EDC Outdoor Golf Scramble will kick off our summer events on June 5 at Hawktree. On July 22 hundreds of kids across Bismarck-Mandan will participate in Lemonade Day and learn to flex their entrepreneurial muscles. In August, we’re planning our very first, family-friendly Chamber EDC Networking event and, to round things out in September, Brats with the Brave and Celebrate Bismarck-Mandan will help us share our appreciation for those who serve and support our community. And… don’t forget about our monthly Membership Mixers and Lunches on the Patio, which are all FREE for Chamber EDC Members. We have a LOT of activities planned and we’re looking forward to seeing you all out and about!

On top of that, our next few months also includes the search for a new Chamber EDC President & CEO.

In late April, current President & CEO Brian Ritter announced his plans to resign next month for a great new opportunity as Head of Market Affairs for Sanford Health. While we’ll certainly miss Brian and wish him the very best as he advances his career, our attention now turns to finding his successor. To lead this effort, we have appointed a Search Committee consisting of Chamber EDC Executive Committee representatives, Board Members and Members At-Large. This group has already met to update the position’s description, develop a timeline, and post the position nationally. Our intent is to move quickly to minimize any disruption to the organization’s operation, but also deliberately to ensure that we find the right candidate. If you have any questions or concerns as this process unfolds, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly.

As you can see, the summer is shaping up to be a busy one, but we’ll be sure to savor the warm weather as much as we can. As always, thank you so much for your continued support and we’ll look forward to seeing you around!

MILITARY AND BUSINESS CONNECTIONS

When a member of the military is deployed, Rob Keller gives the analogy of a three-legged stool. The three legs are the service member, the family, and the employer. All three legs of the stool must be supported, or the stool falls over.

“If I’m deployed and I’m worried about my family (or job), I can’t do anything from Iraq or Afghanistan,” said Keller, Public Affairs Director for North Dakota Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). “Then, I worry. I go out on patrol, and I’m not focused on the mission. If I’m worried that my job will be gone when I come back, then I think about that and I’m not on point.”

Keller enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1973. He worked for the North Dakota National Guard for 21 years before retiring as a Master Sergeant in 2008.

The North Dakota National Guard had a $104 million economic impact on the Bismarck-Mandan area in the 2022 fiscal year. The National Guard has 957 members in the Bismarck-Mandan area, and those service men and women have 1,547 dependents.

Employer Support for Guard and Reserve serves as a mediator for businesses and their military employees. The mission of ESGR is to advocate mutually beneficial initiatives and to resolve potential conflicts between employers and their service members.

ESGR provides ombudsmen to serve as neutral parties resolving disputes between civilian employers and their employees serving in the Guard and Reserve. ESGR can provide legal information so that employers don’t violate the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). They can also promote best practices among employers with military employees.

Keller said that North Dakota employers take care of their military employees exceptionally well.

“North Dakota is such a patriotic state,” Keller said. “You have families who are serving the military for the third or fourth generation... We know that if you hire someone from the military, you will have a valuable employee.”

For several decades, the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC has given out the Golden Eagle Award to celebrate members who support the military. Connection Magazine reached out to several Chamber EDC members to find out how they support their military employees.

GATE CITY BANK

Out of 2,777 nominations, Gate City Bank was one of 15 companies to win the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award in 2022. It is the highest honor given by the U.S. government to employers for exceptional support of National Guard and Reserve members.

LPL Financial Advisor Bleau Hoge is the one who nominated his employer for the Freedom Award. Hoge is a former Sergeant in the North Dakota National Guard.

“I enlisted (in the military) to pay for college, and it was a great tool to do so,” Hoge said. “I graduated school with zero debt.”

Originally, Hoge planned to enlist in the Marines just like his father. But when the Marine recruiter failed to show up at a meeting with Hoge, he decided to look into the National Guard instead.

Hoge served in the 816th Military Police Company. He has a brother who is also in the North Dakota National Guard.

“Military Police sounded really cool, because you get a gun and a badge,” Hoge said. “Instead, I found a lot of what you do in law enforcement is paperwork. Granted I do a lot of paperwork now (as a financial advisor), but I’m also not a very confrontational person.”

Hoge has been activated several times with the National Guard. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked at multiple COVID testing sites throughout the state. He was activated during protests in Fargo following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. He was activated for multiple weeks in Washington D.C. along with 24,000 troops nationwide for the last presidential inauguration.

Any time Hoge takes time off his job — whether for training or an activation — he has noticed how well Gate City Bank takes care of him. Hoge said other soldiers were getting calls from their employers asking when they would be back to their day jobs. When Hoge got calls from his employer, they were checking on his well-being.

“When I was away, I had team members ask me or my wife if we needed anything,” Hoge said. “’Do you need someone to watch the dogs? Shovel the driveway?’ The biggest thing was that my supervisor or manager would reach out to me.”

When Hoge was a team leader in his National Guard unit, he had one team member who constantly had issues with his employer.

“They were always very disappointed when he had to leave,” Hoge said. “They didn’t support him the way Gate City supported me. When I had to go to Washington D.C., I had 48-hours notice. I told my supervisor, and he said, ‘That’s completely fine. We know you have to go. We’ll take care of everything here.’ That’s great when you know you don’t have to worry about anything. You know your team members will pick up the slack.”

Gate City Bank provides multiple benefits for military employees. Military employees continue to receive full pay during active duty and training. Their benefits are uninterrupted such as health, disability, and life insurance. They have two weeks of transition and relaxation time upon returning home.

“If you hire someone in the military, they are disciplined and have integrity — a lot of the values you hope to find in an employee,” Hoge said. “(In addition) communications classes helped me get out of my shell to talk in front of other people. That helps in sales. I gained a lot of confidence from being in the military.”

Hoge met his future wife in the 816th Military Police Company. Sergeant Phoenix Hoge retired from the North Dakota National Guard the same year as Bleau Hoge when they wanted to start a family. Their daughter turns 1-yearold this month.

“I’ve never worked for another company that takes care of its military team members the way Gate City does,” Hoge said. “This organization has been beyond a blessing in paid military leave, time off to get rest upon returning from active duty, and overall support.”

SANFORD HEALTH

Sanford Health is another Bismarck-Mandan employer that has won the Employer Support Freedom Award from the U.S. Secretary of Defense.

Dr. Todd Schaffer, President and CEO of Sanford Health Bismarck, is well aware of how Sanford Health supports their military employees. Dr. Todd Schaffer is also known as Colonel Todd Schaffer in the North Dakota National Guard.

Schaffer has served in the military for over 30 years. He enlisted toward the end of the first Gulf War in 1992.

“When I graduated from high school, seeing the patriotic fervor at that time compelled me to enlist,” Schaffer said. “It brought to the surface the commitment to want to serve my nation.”

When Schaffer graduated from high school in Carrington, N.D., he and 10 other high school friends joined the 141st Engineer Battalion. Schaffer enlisted as a heavy equipment operator.

“A lot of people said, ‘It’s my time to serve,’” Schaffer said. “The Gulf War was ramping up. People said, ‘I want to do my part to serve my country.’ The opportunity to serve our country was the driving force behind it.”

Although Schaffer was never deployed in the first Gulf War, he got his chance to serve in the second Gulf War. Schaffer was deployed four times in the Global War on Terror. In 2004 and 2006, he served as a battalion surgeon in Iraq. In 2010 and 2014, he served in Afghanistan.

Schaffer said one the biggest ways his military career has benefited his civilian career is through leadership skills.

“From company command to brigade command taught me how to lead teams whether they are small, medium, or large,” Schaffer said. “You develop a leadership style that is unique to you and serves you well in different situations.”

Schaffer said the military gives lots of leadership training. The Army does a good job of teaching you leadership skills and then putting you into situations to use those skills.

“(On the civilian side) first, I led a small team of medical providers,” Schaffer said. “That led to 400 providers. That led to 3,800 employees as President and CEO of Sanford Health Bismarck.”

Schaffer serves as State Surgeon for the North Dakota Army National Guard. The State Surgeon is responsible for the overall medical readiness of the North Dakota National Guard. In 2021, he graduated from U.S. Army War College. One of Schaffer’s predecessors served in two of the same roles that he did. Dr. Craig Lambrecht was a mentor to Schaffer. Colonel Lambrecht served as both President of Sanford Health Bismarck and State Surgeon for the North Dakota Army National Guard.

Schaffer said Sanford Health works hard to care for not only military employees, but also military patients. The Sanford healthcare system has a person dedicated to military affairs who focuses on military employees and patients.

Schaffer keeps a personal list of all the military employees they have identified in the Bismarck region, and he delivers gifts on Veterans Day.

“We are very proud of our service to veterans,” Schaffer said. “They have served their country. It’s our turn to make sure we serve them.”

2 VETS MOVING CO.

When Brady Wolf, CEO of 2 Vets Moving Co., decided to join the military after high school, he had no plan B. Wolf was too young to join the Navy SEALs or other special forces, so he joined the U.S. Army Rangers.

“18-year-old me said, ‘What can I do at 18-years-old that is the most bad*ss thing I can get into?’” Wolf said. “I was invincible back then. Every 18-year-old kid thinks he’s top of the world. I’ve always been an adrenaline junkie.”

Wolf graduated from Mandan High School in 2008. Ten days later he was training at Ft. Benning, Ga.

The Army Rangers are deployable to anywhere in the world within 72 hours.

“We would get a call, ‘Pack your bags, we’re going to Afghanistan tomorrow,” Wolf said.

Wolf was deployed numerous times as an Army Ranger, but he can’t talk about his deployments. All of his missions are classified for 25 years. According to Wolf the Army Rangers have a saying, “You will never be able to take credit for anything we do.”

Wolf described the work of an Army Ranger as being the “door kickers.” On a mission, they might fly in on a helicopter at nighttime, land, hike six hours up a mountain, and then execute their mission at an undisclosed location. Wolf said the hard work ethic of the military benefits his civilian career now that he’s a small business owner. Wolf has structured his small business similar to the Army with a military-like chain of command. 2 Vets Moving Co. employs a lot of military family members, because they fit in well with the company culture.

“It’s just work ethic,” Wolf said. “What I did is very labor intensive. It’s the mentality and work ethic.”

CLOVERDALE FOODS

Scott Staudinger, V.P. for Government Affairs and Human Resources at Cloverdale Foods, served in the military for 20 years in both the U.S. Army and the North Dakota National Guard. He has had an eventful 20 years.

Staudinger was stationed in West Germany for three years. On the day before his birthday in 1989, he watched the fall of the Berlin Wall — and he brought home a few pieces as souvenirs. He experienced the reunification of East and West Germany after the city of Berlin had been separated for 50 years.

In 1990 Staudinger was deployed to Iraq in the first Gulf War. In 2003, he returned to Iraq in the second Gulf War with the 957th Multi-Role Bridge Company. That was the first time Staudinger had ever served with women in the same unit, and the Commanding Officer was a woman named Davina French.

“Taking a multi-gender unit into a combat zone where there are no battles lines was really challenging, and the U.S. Army was not prepared for that,” Staudinger said. “Our North Dakota female soldiers adapted and overcame. I was very proud of them.”

After 20 years of serving in the military, Staudinger retired from the North Dakota National Guard as a First Lieutenant in 2005.

“At a young age I learned a deep understanding and respect for the men and women who came before me and served this great nation,” Staudinger said. “I have numerous family members who have served, and I felt a civic responsibility to carry the flag of freedom and follow in their footsteps.”

Staudinger said military training provides the background to ask the right question and think strategically in making decisions. The military builds and motivates teams. This correlates to a civilian job and supports looking out for employee’s welfare, developing individual talent, recognizing successes, and creating a unified team.

Staudinger said current and former military members fit in well at Cloverdale Foods, especially because the manufacturing model is based on the military model.

“Why do I really look heavily at our military candidates?”

Staudinger said. “They fit in like a glove.”

Staudinger said throughout Cloverdale’s 108-year history they have supported veterans and their families — through World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the first Gulf War, and the Global War on Terror. “It has been an honor to protect and serve,” Staudinger said. “Not many people do it — less than 1 percent... Freedom isn’t free.”

THE PRINTERS, INC.

Tell us about yourself and your role within your business.

A: I have been in the printing industry for 35+ years. With all that experience I wear many hats. Every day is different, that is what I enjoy about the industry. One day I may find myself imposing a booklet for the press. The next I may be working on cutting, folding and binding that same project. I find myself involved in some way on almost every job that comes in. It may be answering the customer’s questions to invoicing the job.

MEMBER SINCE 1988

Briefly tell us the history behind The Printers, Inc. and how you got started.

A: The Printers, Inc. started as quick print shop back in the 80’s. It was a time when a copier was an expensive piece of equipment for small businesses. Our main work then was what the average office needed for copying. We have grown and changed over the years to the full service printing company that we are today.

How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted The Printers, Inc.?

A: It has brought new customers that are in need of our services. Every new business is in need of some type of printing service. It could be a banner for their opening or a direct mail piece to announce their business, etc. We can help in many different ways to promote and expand their business.

Have there been any monumental changes within your industry that you’ve had to deal with?

A: The printing industry has changed in many ways since I started. We have gone from setting type in lead to the computers imaging directly on the printing plate. The computer and Adobe software have made the most monumental change though. No longer do you need to send out for color separations of photos, shoot negatives of copy and mask them to fit the press. You can build an entire project digitally. The advancements of the color copier has also made it possible to have full color printing affordable on the small quantity jobs.

The digital age has also taken it’s market share. With copiers and computers in every business that has cut into what they need from us. Take invoices for instance, now you can print right out of your accounting software to your desktop printer.

What does the future The Printers, Inc. look like and the industry as a whole look like to you?

A: I believe that there will always be ink on paper in some way. We have to always be looking forward to where the market is going. People enjoy have something different about their product. They might look at using a coating to get different feel on the paper, maybe it is a special die cut to your mail piece. They want their piece to grab your attention. We work with them to get “that look”.

The Printers, Inc. became a Chamber EDC member in 1988, why do you continue to renew?

A: It takes everyone to be a community. The Chamber EDC is a great way to connect with other businesses in the community. They have for years kept the local businesses informed and connected. Their help with government affairs makes sure that the members have a voice at our local and state governments.

What should other Chamber EDC members know about The Printers, Inc. that may assist them?

A: The Printers, Inc. is a commercial printing company. We can do most anything when it comes to ink and paper. Be it for birthday invites to monthly publications or large format printing, we can help with all your projects. We have a full service mailing department for your direct mail needs. JOB SERVICE HOSTS JOB FAIR

Job Service North Dakota is hosting a Fair Chance Job Fair June 8, 2023, from 11:00am - 3:00pm at Job Service ND, 1601 E Century Ave, Bismarck.

This event is to assist and support individuals who have difficulty returning or getting into the workforce. This includes individuals who may have barriers such as, homelessness, lack of education, recently dislocated, New Americans, or a criminal background.

The Fair Chance Job Fair provides an opportunity to bring individuals in direct contact with employers that are aware of their status and willing to hire them. Employers may also benefit from the Work Opportunity Tax Credit up to $2400 per hire.

CHAMBER EDC LAUNCHES LINKEDIN MARKETING EFFORTS

The Chamber EDC launched a LinkedIn marketing initiative in April. The initiative came from a recommendation in the economic development strategic plan that was commissioned in 2022.

The campaign is designed to reach those businesses outside the state of North Dakota and provide a better picture of what it is like to do business in Bismarck Mandan. Content for posts will include information about available business assistance programs, introductions to Chamber EDC staff, and unique stats about Bismarck Mandan and various rankings earned.

This will be a continuous campaign with the goal to grow the followers of the Chamber EDC LinkedIn page and raise awareness about Bismarck Mandan from the decision makers within companies. Studies have shown that those decision maker’s social media platform of choice continues to be LinkedIn and the platform is typically where they get their news.

In October of 2022, the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC completed a strategic plan specific to our economic development efforts. As part of the implementation of that plan, the Chamber EDC developed two new websites focused on our business attraction and talent attraction efforts respectively.

The first site www.bismarckmandanedc.com is designed to be resource for businesses who are interested in relocating or expanding in Bismarck Mandan and will be used in the Chamber EDC’s business attraction marketing efforts.

The second website www.makeyourmarkbisman.com is a powerful tool for those new to Bismarck Mandan or interested in moving to the community. The website is designed to be a one-stop-shop resource guide for all things Bismarck Mandan. Whether an individual is looking to live, work, or play in Bismarck Mandan this website will be the resource to find the information. The workforce website was made possible by a grant through the ND Department of Commerce. The regional workforce impact program (RWIP) was created from federal dollars and provided to local communities to assist in impactful workforce initiatives.

GOLDMAN SACHS 10,000 SMALL BUSINESS KICKOFF

Goldman Sachs is now recruiting businesses across the state of North Dakota to participate in their 10,000 Small Businesses program. The 10,000 Small Businesses has helped entrepreneurs across the country grow their businesses for over a decade by offering a practical business training program, access to capital, and personalized support services. The 3-month program includes 10 sessions that assist in the growth of small businesses. Session topics include financial statements workshop, money and metrics, marketing and selling, and being bankable. The program is offered FREE of charge to the participants.

The application deadline for the program is June 29th and is available to business owners or co-owners that have been in operation for more than two years, have business revenues over $75,000 in the most recent fiscal year, and have more than two employees (including the owner).

BUSINESS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM OF THE MONTH

As part of the funding that the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC receives from Morton County, $25,000 is set aside per year for the MORTON COUNTY DEVELOPMENT FUND

This dollars from this fund are to be used for projects in the rural areas of Morton County and include the communities of Almont, Flasher, Glen Ullin, Hebron, and New Salem. The main criterion for the fund is that the project needs to retain or create jobs or demonstrate impact to tourism in rural Morton County.

ACCEPTING LEADERSHIP APPLICATIONS FOR 2023-2024

Leadership Bismarck-Mandan is now accepting applications for the Class of 2024. Up to 18 applicants will be accepted into the program. Participants delve into today’s most compelling issues.

Community experts create issue day sessions on topics relevant to the Bismarck-Mandan area, including: economic development, energy, agriculture, legislation, political involvement, human services, law enforcement, military, emergency services, arts, leisure, healthcare, and education.

Most issue days are 1/2 day. Highlights of the program include a full day at the Capitol during the legislative session, a full day retreat, and a graduation ceremony. Following the issue days, the class will divide into groups, select a community project they are passionate about and work to make that field project into reality.

RITTER TO RESIGN FROM BISMARCK MANDAN CHAMBER EDC

Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC President & CEO Brian Ritter will resign from his role effective July 14, 2023.

Ritter has been with the Chamber EDC and its predecessors, the BismarckMandan Chamber of Commerce and Bismarck-Mandan Development Association (BMDA), since 2003. Named President of the BMDA in 2013, he added duties as President of the Chamber of Commerce in 2017 before the two organizations merged to form the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC in 2019.

"Serving this organization for the past 20 years has been both challenging and rewarding, but more than anything else it's been a privilege," said Ritter. "As a Bismarck-Mandan native, I can't think of a greater opportunity to serve the community that I love so much."

Ritter will be taking a new role as Sanford Health's Head of Market Affairs on July 17, 2023. There he will help lead the health system's strategic planning efforts, community relations and board development in Bismarck-Mandan. The Chamber EDC's Board of Directors will now name a search committee to identify the organization's next President & CEO.

"We sincerely appreciate all of Brian's efforts and wish him the very best in his new role," said Chamber EDC Board Chair Wendy Van Duyne. "Through this transition, our team of staff and volunteers will continue with the goals and objectives Brian has initiated on behalf of the Chamber EDC. We have been fortunate to have his leadership both in our organization and in our community, and we look forward to his continued success."

In order to identify Ritter’s successor, the Chamber EDC has formed a Search Committee comprised of representatives from the Executive Committee, Board of Directors and Membership. Led by Board Chair Wendy Van Duyne, that Search Committee quickly organized and launched a nation-wide search in mid to late-May. Virtual interviews will begin in early June followed by in-person interviews with finalists later in the month and will continue until a successor is named.

Born and raised in Devils Lake, North Dakota, I quickly learned the ways of the state: hard work and hotdish. I attended North Dakota State University for Marketing and Finance and completed my Global Business requirements at Universidad del País Vasco in Bilbao, Spain. I spent three years as a Business Engagement Fellow at Dakota Medical Foundation then moved to Mandan in April of 2023 with my partner in crime Chris.

I am thrilled to be joining the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC as the Business Development and Marketing Coordinator. In this role I develop and distribute marketing pieces as part of our business attraction efforts, work directly with new and expanding businesses to seek growth opportunities and analyze impacts of economic development marketing efforts to ensure effective resource allocation.

This role combines my passions and skills all in efforts to share the story and continue the growth of the prospering Bismarck-Mandan area.

In my free time you’ll find me on a walk with friends, petting strangers’ dogs, taking an impromptu trip, out on a run, heading to the green house to find a new plant I’ll accidentally kill in a week, and falling asleep during any and every movie (but I’ll insist I get to pick it).

I was born and raised in Detroit Lakes, MN and after graduating high school, I continued my education at the University of North Dakota. I completed my degrees in Communication and Human Nutrition in 2020. I am a people person and am highly motivated by maintaining and nurturing relationships. UNIVERSITY OF MARY ADDS NEW SHOTGUN SPORTS TEAM STARTING FALL SEMESTER 2023

Today the University of Mary announced shotgun sports as its new, 20th Marauders sports program that both men and women can compete in starting this fall, 2023. The co-ed sport allows scholar-athletes to compete in a sport that is growing regionally and nationally among higher education institutions. The sport already includes intercollegiate programs throughout North Dakota and the Upper Midwest.

This is the first sport initiative launched by the University of Mary’s new Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Cooper Jones after only a few weeks at the helm of Marauders Athletics. Jones believes this new sport is a perfect fit for the athletic program’s ‘Greatness through Virtue’ mission and identity and will enhance the student-life experience.

The Marauders will be coached by longtime marksman and Capital City Sporting Clays owner, Mark Sandness, and will compete as part of the USA College Clay Target League.

Not only is Capital City Sporting Clays a premier sporting clays, skeet, and shotgun facility offering the finest fivestand ranges in the region, but it will be home to the new Marauders shotgun sports team where they will be challenged to the highest degree in marksmanship.

Sandness’ love for shooting started over 30 years ago. This passion for shooting and education inspired him to begin teaching the sport, while also having fun and, most importantly, being safe.

“I try to adjust my teaching method to meet the needs of each student,” explained Sandness. “I like to explain the ‘why’ to athletes. I started teaching over 20 years ago, and I have learned over this time that each athlete is unique. This is especially true in shotgun sports. The way I see a target is very different from the next person, and I love the challenge of helping that student succeed. I consider it an honor to teach these athletes the art of shooting and I am humbled by the opportunity to be their coach.”

One of the athletes Sandness will be coaching is University of Mary scholar-athlete Janine Warne, a freshman varsity softball player from Brookings, SD. She brought up the idea of adding a shotgun sports team at Mary to the Sportsmen’s Club on campus. Interest and excitement grew, so Warne and fellow sophomore classmate, Matthew Sammons, of Bismarck, got the university’s administration involved and the rest is history.

The goal is to have a roster of 20 shotgun sports athletes by the start of the season in September and then continue to grow the team from that foundation.

A: We experienced a near record-breaking snowfall amount this last winter. And property owners and managers were scrambling to remove the snow. As the winter continued, fewer parking spaces were available replaced by giant piles of snow that had to be loaded and hauled out (very expensive). As if blading and pushing the snow multiple times per week wasn’t expensive enough, they had to pay even more to find a place to dispose of it. And here is how it hits all of us: Higher rents and more operating expenses. As a tenant, most leases include these expenses in the CAM (or Common Area Maintenance) amount. Which historically have been in the $4.00 per square foot (annual) range. This year owners have experienced snow removal invoices of over $10-20,000. Or double that of an average year. Calculated out to each tenant’s pro-rata share, Landlord’s are seeing this expense go up $.50 to $1.00 PSF per year. If you are in a NNN lease, your CAM expense could increase around $1.00 PSF in 2023. And if you are not in a NNN lease, these are still expenses that will affect your rental rates. A: The Bismarck Cancer Center is excited to announce a new support service we are offering to our patients. We started the program in November of 2022. The “Love on a Leash” certified pet therapy dogs have been coming to the Bismarck Cancer Center to visit patients, caregivers, and staff. The benefits of a Pet Therapy program include reducing anxiety and depression, helping to lower stress, improving overall mood, and providing comfort. At the Bismarck Cancer Center, we strive to support the whole patient-mind, body, and spirit. Max, Zeke, Sierra, Eddie, and Wrigley are the dogs that visit periodically with their owners, and we have received positive feedback. With help from the pets, we are hoping to provide additional comfort to our patients receiving treatment at the Bismarck Cancer Center.

METLAND PASSES FAA INSPECTION AUTHORIZATION

Mandan Aero Center’s Lead Technician, Zachery Metland, has passed the FAA’s certification exam to receive his Inspection Authorization (IA) license. The IA license allows him to determine airworthiness by inspecting repairs or alterations for conformity to approved data and assure that the aircraft is safe to operate.

Zach has been working as an aircraft mechanic in the area for five years at sister company Bismarck Aero Center. Beforehand, he graduated from Northland Community Technical College with a degree in Aviation Maintenance Technology and obtained his FAA issued Airframe and Powerplant license. By passing the IA Exam, Zach will be able to expand on his talents and provide additional aircraft maintenance expertise at the Mandan Airport.

TSCHOSIK JOINS INTERSTATE ENGINEERING

Interstate Engineering is excited to announce that Ethan Tschosik has joined the Mandan office. As an Engineering Technician, he joins the team with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Geographic Information Systems. He is currently completing an Associate of Applied Science degree in Engineering Technology from Bismarck State College. Ethan brings energy and excitement as he joins the team.

SANFORD HEALTH WELCOMES TWO NEW PROVIDERS TO THE BISMARCK MEDICAL CENTER

Michelle TePastte, MD, and Amir Kichloo, MD, have joined Sanford Health in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Dr. TePastte received her medical degree from Wayne State University Medical School in Detroit, Michigan and did residency work at Michigan State University in Michigan. She also completed a fellowship in hospital medicine and holds certification from the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. Kichloo received his medical degree from Government Medical College in Srinager, India and did residency work at Nassau University Medical Center in New York. He also holds certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. TePastte and Dr. Kichloo will practice out of the Sanford Bismarck Medical Center.

LARDY NAMED ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AT BISMARCK HIGH SCHOOL

Bismarck Public Schools has hired Mark Lardy as an assistant principal for Bismarck High School.

Mr. Lardy began his educational career in Oakes, ND, as a math teacher and head wrestling coach. He joined Bismarck Public Schools in 2002, teaching math, coaching, and serving as activities director at Wachter Middle School. Mr. Lardy has worked at Bismarck High School for the past ten years, first as a math teacher, and most recently as Dean of Students. He has been the co-head wrestling coach at BHS since 2017.

GRIFFIN NAMED NEW CAPITAL CREDIT UNION CEO Capital Credit Union Board of Directors

Chairman Faye Miller announced Jon Griffin, chief lending officer, has been selected to serve as Capital Credit Union’s chief executive officer, effective May 17. Internal and external candidates were identified and interviewed by a board-formed Candidate Selection Committee, which was assisted by executive position recruiting service Shanley Search Partners, LLC of Spring, TX.

Griffin joined Capital Credit Union in 2011 as director of risk management and was promoted to vice president of risk management in 2014. In 2019, Griffin was promoted to chief operations and risk officer and in 2021, he was named the credit union’s chief lending officer.

Griffin succeeds CEO Vance Reinbold, who has led the credit union since 2018. Under his leadership, the credit union grew to more than 31,000 members with more than $700 million in assets.

Griffin graduated from the University of North Dakota in 2005 with bachelor’s degrees in accounting and finance. He also earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Mary in 2015. He and his wife, Kelly, live in Bismarck with their three children.

NEW DIRECTOR OF ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION NAMED FOR MANDAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Mandan Public Schools is pleased announce

Callie Schnell as the next Director of Alternative Education for the district. Schnell will replace Dr. Carly Retterath as she steps into her new role as Assistant Superintendent of MPS in July 2023.

Schnell is finishing up her 13th year with Mandan Public Schools as a Counselor at Mandan High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology and her Master of Science in School Counseling, both from the University of Mary. She also spent 10 years serving Mandan Middle School as a counselor.

Schnell will begin her new role in August 2023.

GUY NAMED AARP NORTH DAKOTA STATE PRESIDENT

Former Bismarck City Commissioner Nancy Guy was selected for a twoyear term as AARP North Dakota State President beginning in May 2023.

As State President, Guy serves as the principal volunteer spokesperson within the state, chairs the AARP ND Executive Council, integrates member insights into state efforts and represents the voice of North Dakotas AARP volunteers and members in the work of AARP.

The daughter of former North Dakota Governor Bill Guy and First Lady Jean Guy, she grew up in the public eye, where she says she learned the importance of civic service and the power of volunteering. Guy currently is active in the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition, Bismarck-Mandan League of Women Voters, Friends of the Bismarck Public Library, and the North Dakota Women’s Network.

Stacy Kern, MD, has joined Sanford Health in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Dr. Kern received her medical degree from University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, Minnesota and did residency work at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She also completed a fellowship in neonatology from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and holds certification from the American Board of Pediatrics in neo-natal-perinatal medicine and pediatrics.

Dr. Kern will practice out of the Sanford Bismarck Medical Center.
